I know I'm late but how was FIFA Women's Cup for everyone?

I've been getting into following athletics for about a year or two now, and I can safely say my favorite part of any sport is seeing the members of a team motivate each other and work hard towards helping compensate for each other's weaknesses in an effort to be the best they can be. We see athletes on TV all the time, but unless you're specifically looking for it, most people aren't going to see behind the scenes where teammates can become almost like a second family for many of them.

I get that this thread (and by extension the Women's Cup) are in the past and that this thread hasn't gotten any attention really, but in an effort to make conversation I'll say that I enjoyed following the actual sport of football again. I played growing up for nine years, and while I was never really any good, I do have fond memories of specific moments.

Lionel Messi got awarded a record-breaking 8th Ballon Dor as expected despite a less than stellar season with PSG thanks to his World Cup performance in Katar that culminated in winning the World Cup. I'm ngl, i would have kinda prefered to see Haaland or one of the other Man City top stars such as DeBruyne getting awarded, but Messi was always going to win. However, this is certainly his last Ballon Dor and the true end of the absurd dominating era of Lionel Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo and it's really hard to imagine to see another player dominating a football/soccer era the same way as these two guys or Pele in 1960s did. At least i don't see anybody from the current generation achieving this kind of domination.

Less then stellar season at PSG is a bit harsh in 41 games he had 21 goals and 20 assists, that's pretty damn good to me.

i never post here but this topic got me interested. i agree that numbers are indeed pretty good altho ligue 1 is a terrible league that has only one relevant club (psg market value is 1.07bn while second monaco has a squad worth 344m just for reference). haaland scored 52 in 53 games in all competitions, breaking a bunch of goalscoring records in the most competitive league and becoming topscorer in the champions league as well. the question is how much more can haaland do to win it? not to mention messi and psg missed their only relevant goal the champions league title yet again after some awful performances where messi was invisible and argentina got so many penalties on their way to the WC win that i would be ashamed if i were argentinian. in general the WC is valued way too highly, martinez as the best goalkeeper is such a ridiculous decision as well.

Prem League updates 4 months after last post.
For anybody who's interested.
Arsenal kinda bottled
Liverpool beats my team they win title
Legit I think a lot of people are expecting spurs are just gonna let them beat us
But then it comes to a point where manager might get sacked (which will prob happen if we lose Europa (we're not losing to the Norwegian team I forget there name)) and everybody's thinking that we should get relegated or something like that.

United States native poster here again. Does anyone else feel like the major North American sports leagues in particular have become increasingly stale lately, or is that just me? The NBA’s struggles to retain viewers have been documented to the moon and back at this point, but aside from our country’s one and a half month phase a while back where all of America decided we were going to become hockey fans out of nowhere only to get hilariously humbled by Canada’s fans but that’s beside the point, I don’t think any of the other big leagues here have evolved or innovated that much either. The NFL and to an extent the MLB have had some parity issues over the past decade or two, and the NHL’s Atlantic Division seems to have decided they want to commit war crimes on the entire league during the 2020s specifically. Never thought I’d say this out loud, but I think the post-Warriors-dynasty NBA might actually be the most balanced out of those four right now in terms of parity between teams.

Smaller leagues, college athletics depending on the sport, and stuff like Major League Soccer have helped the sports landscape in our country somewhat, I would argue, and I also want to give a shout-out to the recent renaissance of women’s basketball in particular thanks to the insane levels of talent and innovation coming out of that sport specifically over the past few years. My fellow Americans can bash on the WNBA all they want, but I’m very slowly starting to realize that I might actually enjoy watching them more than the “real NBA” next season, and I also don’t think I’ll be nearly as interested in the NFL, NHL, and MLB as I tried to be during 2024-25 even though I do want to respect the talent that many baseball players inherently have while the season is current. I just feel like almost all of these leagues and all of these teams are suffering from a lot of the same problems- the rise of sports betting, the lack of innovation and new strategies, and these products starting to feel incredibly same-y to watch overall just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and cycling back to where this post began, I have to know- is it just me that feels that way? And are international sports any better of a product to enjoy right now? Because I would love to know if I’m missing out on absolute cinema.
