Spotlight

I know we already have 2 but I'd like to do one on landorus since I had it in mind since last issue.

I personally only allow two spotlights at once for any given tier, any more than that feels somewhat ridiculous. Valmanway is already doing the Thundurus spotlight, so perhaps you could collaborate and make an article about all of the tree genies in OU? Or would that article get too fat?

Too large. My plan was to do an OU Spotlight each issue, so it was a shock when another one got accepted (by Valmanway too, since when was he part of The Smog staff ?_?). Since sequence doesn't appear to matter, by this then it would be acceptable for me to do two OU Spotlight's next issue (charizard and landorus). In any case, I would like to do two RU Spotlights this issue, Zoroark and Yanmega (since the two are largely considered suspect-worthy by the community). My request for issue 37's two OU spotlights still stands though.

I wouldn't say I'm staff exactly, I'm more comparable to a helping hand that pitches in for article approvals, as well as QC stuff here and there.

Anyways, I'm gonna have to side with Bummer on this one and delay the approval here for the reason of having 2 OU spotlights already in the works, but I have another reason. While you're great at spotlights (liked your recent Greninja spotlight, by the way! :D), I personally don't think the same person should do two spotlights for the same article, just because it's like, "What if someone else wants to have a go with a spotlight?", y'know? I can certainly approve Charizard or Landorus for next issue, but for now, I say we should really just wait for the next issue to come out before making OU spotlights for now.

Well considering it is completely known that I want to do a spotlight as a running series, the fact that it was accepted throws that away, which is why I tried to compensate for next issue. I'm definitely doing 1 OU Spotlight in 37, whether I do 2 or not is up to Bummer. I don't know how you can "approve" things for some reason either, why were you given this ability anyway?

Not sure if I follow. Tier Spotlights were already a regular installment in recent issues, so those articles will, regardless of author, be a common sight in future releases as well.

Most of the Smog Staff has other duties outside our maintenance work here, which makes it increasingly difficult to also have a good knowledge of the current metagame in various tiers, which is why we've approached other members to act as consultants to aid in the approval process. Valmanway is one of them, although he can submit article proposals like anyone else.

Valmanway has currently several articles on his slate, so he could also chose to postpone the Thundurus spotlight 'til next issue. I hate to see people fighting over the spots, but I stand by my opinion that only three spotlights for any given tier is the max for any issue. skylight Flora and Toast++ are free to interject.

No, you can do it for this issue, I've said I'd like to do two RU Spotlight's this issue.

My question is what is the pre-requisite or even the qualification that enables some people to consult for this process, and why they are just hand-picked from apparent metagame knowledge which I question in the first place (but that is besides the point of the selection process).

Honestly, I'm kind of surprised myself that I got this superpower. From what I can tell, you really just need to a) have good knowledge of the metagame of choice (me being OU, for example), and b) be an active contributor to The Smog. If you want a more in depth reason as to why I was chosen, skylight will probably have a more specific answer for you.

I'm going to go with Bummer on this since we don't want to get too one-sided with any issue. I also don't want a situation like the end of BW where we ran out of Pokemon to spotlight, iirc. I'm not sure that any of us really knew that you were planning them in series, either. Also, you have a backup plan.

As far as the people here, we really just picked a couple of people out of our base and asked if they'd do some QC for us. The qualifications are really just what valmanway said and, yes, it's rather arbitrary. We really only need 2-3 people available for a tier.

Also to just clarify on what Toast said, I also got suggestions from people that are pretty knowledgeable on some of the QC team too. Valmanway can approve articles, and that's all there is. If you have a concern with anyone's QCing however, feel free to bring it up to one of us, but I do doubt that is the case.

Anyway agreeing with keeping one to two in the issue.

Yeah I get all that, I pretty much just have two questions:

1) Can I do 2 RU Spotlights in 36, as there appears to be no interest in RU Spotlights by anyone else?
2) What prerequisite is there to be part of this "quality control" for articles?

As I'm 100% sure you're aware, ScraftyIsTheBest is already doing an RU Spotlight for Zoroark. But the thing is there's already an article submission for another RU Spotlight in approvals, and since the limit for Spotlights per tier is 3, that means you can only do 1 RU Spotlight for this issue, provided the second user gets their submission approved.

People sometimes overlook things. This comes off as a bit attitude-y and I hope that's not your intention.

I'm going to work this backwards.

2) To be part of the QC, you just have to have a good and current knowledge of what you're QCing and ideally a history with The Smog. The fact is that we only needed a few users for each section and in general we had a lot of users that fit that bill so it may seem arbitrary.

1) As Valmanway said, that might be a problem. We may be able to have you do 1 OU and 1 RU? This will certainly be an issue full of spotlights.. What do you think, Bummer?

Anyway, we do appreciate your interest but can I ask why you are insistent about doing 2?

Yeah the number of spotlights definitely seem to increase, but I won't support a limit crossing multiple tiers if the interest is there, not to mention that dispensing the tasks between the writers would be even more complicated than this instance.

As for our QC people, you're better off inquiring about that to the Smog Staff personally rather than bringing it up here. We didn't intentionally look over anyone, we merely wanted to find a decent amount of people to accomplish the task, and if others are interested to help then we could definitely consider extending the list.

Oops I had no idea about that other RU spotlight lol, I was completely sure there weren't any other. I kinda want to do 2 articles in general since 1 does seem like enough, but how about I do 1 RU spotlight and one general metagame article which I can take the time to think about?

Sounds good. Go for it, just remember to make a thread when you figure out the subject.

Yeah, I will. Thanks :3

Also, in regards to this:

Yes, because I would try and do something that someone else is already doing on purpose, because that would lead me where exactly? Having found out about it a day later and having to take it down?

I had no intentions of coming across as rude in any, and I apologize for my bad wording on the subject.
