Set Description
=========
With a Choice Band equipped, Urshifu-R turns into one of the best physical wallbreakers in the tier, always 2HKOing would-be checks such as physically defensive Clefable and Corviknight after Stealth Rock with Surging Strikes. The fact that it is a multi-hit move helps Urshifu-R break past occasional Substitute from Pokemon like Volcarona, while the guaranteed critical hit lets it bypass Defense boosts from Pokemon like Iron Defense Skarmory and Cosmic Power Mew. Unseen Fist prevents Protect Pokemon, such as Garchomp, Melmetal, and Heatran, from scouting it's moves. Between its two STAB moves, Urshifu-R can hit most of the metagame at least neutrally. For the few that these moves bounce off of, such as Toxapex, Dragonite, and Slowbro, it can easily pivot away from them with U-turn, dealing chip damage and generating momentum. It also provides an easy middle ground in situations where one would otherwise have to make an uncomfortable prediction. Aqua Jet is a strong priority move that can help its team deal with threatening sweepers, such as Volcarona, and other faster threats that are weak to it, such as Blacephalon and Sand Rush Excadrill, which can be especially useful on the offensive teams that Urshifu-R often finds itself on. Ice Punch functions as an excellent lure against what is typically one of its cleanest counters in Dragonite and also allows it to cleanly OHKO Dragapult and Garchomp. Choice Band generally increases the raw power of Urshifu-R significantly; for instance, Choice Band allows it to 2HKO Corviknight after Stealth Rock damage and always 2HKO physically defensive Clefable. Thunder Punch is an alternative that helps deal with bulky Water-types like Toxapex and Tapu Fini. A Jolly nature lets it outspeed important metagame staples such as Landorus-T, Rotom-W, and non-Choice Scarf Tapu Lele. An Adamant nature is a less common option for when even more power is desired. It affords Urshifu-R a chance to OHKO Volcanion and defensive Tornadus-T and guarantee a OHKO on Rotom-W.
Choice Band Urshifu-R typically requires using more prediction than the Protective Pads set, although you can often just repeatedly use U-turn to create momentum. Effects that punish contact moves, such as Rocky Helmet on Pokemon like Clefable and Buzzwole and Flame Body on Heatran or Volcarona, can be devastating to Choice Band Urshifu-R, particularly when it uses Surging Strikes. Especially on offensive teams, it can be used as a temporary check to Pokemon like Weavile and Heatran, but its mediocre bulk only allows it to check the aforementioned threats once or twice. Additionally, losing its Choice Band to a Weavile's Knock Off can be a major hindrance in its task of breaking through the opposing team. If it is running Thunder Punch, it is generally used as either a middle ground against teams relying on defensive cores, such as Tapu Fini and Corviknight, or as a one-time lure on a bulky Water-type, such as Toxapex or Tapu Fini, due to the danger of staying in while locked into it.
Team Options
========
Typically, Choice Band Urshifu-R best fits on offensive teams that value its power over the longevity and stability offered by Protective Pads or the Speed offered by Choice Scarf. Offensive teams also often benefit from the ability to use Urshifu-R as a temporary check to Heatran and Weavile, which can be difficult to consistently answer on such teams. Entry hazards like Stealth Rock are very important for Urshifu-R, as they help immensely in wearing down its checks, such as Tapu Fini and Buzzwole, as it switches out with U-turn. Some of Choice Band Urshifu-R's most potent pairings are with powerful wallbreakers, like Tapu Lele, Melmetal, and Nidoking, that can abuse its checks such as Clefable and Tapu Fini. Similarly, Nasty Plot Galarian Slowking is a great partner due to being able to punish Toxapex as well as Fairy-type checks. Rain support from Pelipper can make Urshifu-R's Surging Strikes even more potent. Under rain, it can OHKO physically defensive Clefable and Corviknight, as well as 2HKO Tapu Fini with Surging Strikes after Stealth Rock. Future Sight support from the likes of Slowbro, Assault Vest Galarian Slowking, and Tapu Lele can help Urshifu-R break through Toxapex and Buzzwole.
