STAB STABmons

As the best player in stabmons, it is time we review a few things for tier.

First, there is no reason for astral barrage to be banned. Stabmons is a tier that will tell you straight to your face every type in pokemon deserves a 120 bp stab move except ghost type. To explain to you how stupid this ban is, it was banned when ceaseless edge ting lu was legal and on every team. Ghost types suck in stabmons, completely carried by gholdengo alone as the only viable offensive special ghost type. Even with astral barrage ghost types struggle with toxapex and tyranitar. And no ghost isn't the best offensive type in the game, dark is and has been since gen 6. In stabmons it is a bit closer with a lot of very high level types such as fairy, flying, water, dark, ground, rock truly this is a tier where almost every type is great. Except special ghosts and normal types.

Secondly, unban extreme speed. Normal types are unusable garbage. A whole type utterly deleted from a tier based on prejudice. Normal type trades higher base power for its abysmal coverage, yet stabmons utterly nukes this tradeoff for normal types. Even with extreme speed, normal types are still not above the other typings such as water dark and electric with absurdly strong priority moves with fantastic typings.

I don't think the tier gains anything by having Belly Drum E-Speed Snorlax or Guts SD Ursaring as an option in the tier. Their power would make E-killer Arceus look like a wet pool noodle! You'd basically have to ban every halfway decent Normal Type to have E-Speed exist in the tier.

Similar story for Astral Barrage. Ghost is already strong in standard with Shadow Ball, and Astral Barrage would be like giving those a free +1.
Snorlax might get looked at. Who cares. Snorlax has 0 play in the current meta. There aren’t any half decent normal types in the tier. That’s a problem.

It is absolutely not a problem. Tiering decisions aren't made because some elements are underperforming, especially if it would hurt the tier as a whole. By that logic we should allow Arceus-Bug and Rock into OU or Monotype because there are no good pokemon of those types. But we don't, because they'd obviously run over everything else. Heck, if you're worried about there not being enough normal types you should advocate for a Mellota unban, as at least it's only one pokemon instead of an entire move which breaks multiple Pokemon.

extreme speed is on a level higher then stuff like jet punch, sucker and tclap and its not close. its 1/3 stronger then jet punch, stronger then the other two and doesnt require ur opponent to attack, not to mention that as a consequence of being a normal type its always backed up by swords dance + consistent recovery. it would break many a pokemon and help to pretty much ruin any team without like a skarm or similar. not even going to mention sd pixilate espeed sylveon cause #gatekeep

astral barrage is similar tho i will say not as broken imo, its just a next level strong move off an absurdly good offensive typing with no drawback. the only real move you can draw parallel to is glacial lance which has an arguably worse typing and far less good users, with astral unbanned suddenly ghold is 2 shotting av pex among many other calcs, and all the other ghosts get a severe buff, and the best check to ghosts was just removed in ting lu. saying special ghosts are bad is actually insnae when ghold is a top 3 mon and pecha, basc f and skele are pretty solid, and pretending other types have it better is very weird when you can easily argue that lando is the only good physical flying, latios the only good special psychic, ival the only good physical fairy and so on and so on, the lack of special ghosts isnt because they are bad, its because ghold is outclasses them which isnt a sign of a flawed meta in itself.

I feel like for the Salac Gholdengo HO, Bolt could be replaced with Zapdos

Zapdos @ Leftovers

Nature: Modest
Ability: Pressure

EVs: 252 HP / 252 Sp Atk / 4 Sp Def.

- Volt Switch
- Electro Drift
- Aeroblast
- Roost

If there’s anything I can improve on the set, let me know please!
Change Volt Switch to U-turn and Lefties for Heavy-Duty Boots, please. U-turn so that it can safely pivot out from ground types and boots so it doesn’t get hurt by SR.

Hey everyone, the STABmons council has been monitoring the format as a lot of games are happening with OMPL. In order to make the format more competitive as a whole, tours players feedback is being taken into account for future tiering actions.

:sm/basculegion: :sm/thundurus-therian:

Following a council vote, Basculegion-M and Thundurus-Therian have been banned!

/SammyCe123ClemKineticQTxdRudi.exeResult
Basculegion-MBANBANBANBANBANBANBAN (6-0-0)
Thundurus-TSUSPECTBANBANSUSPECTBANBAN
BAN (4-2-0)

Basculegion has proven itself to be a problematic element following the recent bans. If checking the Pokemon defensively was never really on the table due to its absurd raw damage output, multiple Pokemon that could at least check it offensively have been recently banned, and we've seen a rise in Basc usage in the latest STAB tournament games.
Despite the recent actions on Surging Strikes, Basculegion still has access to a variety of moves, most notably Poltergeist and Spirit Shackle: very powerful Ghost STABs, arguably the best offensive typing in the game, allowing it to melt Water-resists. Those moves being non-contact means they're not punished by Beak Blast or contact Abilities or items, making em even more difficult to deal with. Furthermore, Basculegion loves its newfound access to Jet Punch, making it harder to outspeed and KO from threats who would otherwise threaten it.

Following the recent Ting-Lu & Raging Bolt bans, it comes to no surprise to see Thundurus-Therian take the metagame by a storm. Flying + Electric coverage has always been great, and Thundurus doesn't even need to run coverage options to be threatening to quite literally everything. Similarly to Basculegion, its access to Thunderclap makes it difficult to revenge kill, especially considering how easily it can grab Nasty Plot boosts by virtue of its typing & bulk. While Thundurus-T is not the most unreasonable Pokemon to deal with in-game, STAB council believes it warps teambuliding like little else, justifying its ban.

Tagging dhelmise to implement, thanks!

I have tried to write up something about the Champions Megas about three times now and keep on losing my place. So I'll keep it brief.

:starmie-mega:
60/100/105/130/105/120
Ability: Huge Power

Mega Starmie is bulkier, faster MegaCham. It gets excellent priority in Jet Punch and good coverage between STABs, Ice Spinner, Thunderbolt, and the raw power of Self-Destruct. It also has Rapid Spin, Bulk Up, and Recover giving it utility and flexibility in sets. If this was legal at all it wouldn't last long.

:dragonite-mega:
91/124/115/145/125/100
Ability: Multiscale

Base Dragonite is banned, so this isn't usable even if it existed. However, in theory, it seems good. Physical sets are largely outclassed by base Dragonite, which can run Boots and is stronger, if slower. Special sets would be incredible... if Oblivion Wing existed. As it is, with existing moves, MegaNite seems like a decent user of CSoul, or simply Roost 3 Attacks.

:hawlucha-mega:
78/137/100/74/93/118
Ability: No Guard

STAB Mega Hawlucha exists to Dynamic Punch. It's the hax aspect of MPidg dialed up by about 300%. Defensive counterplay not vulnerable to confusion hax does exist, notably Gholdengo and Pecharunt, so I'd be interested to see how much of a pain this thing turned out to be.

:chesnaught-mega:
88/137/172/74/115/44

Chesnaught is fat. It can counter a number of high tier physical attackers, including Zamazenta, Rillaboom, Tyranitar, Great Tusk, and more. Spikes gives it good utility. Maybe not for every team but certainly worth using.

:drampa-mega:

:delphox-mega:
75/69/72/159/125/134
Ability: Levitate

The two things that draw the eye with Delphox-Mega are its Speed and its Special Attack. Not much that's legal outpaces 134 Speed without a boost, even when considering other Megas. However even if fast and fairly strong, Delphox is weak to several types of common priority. If Torch Song was still legal I would expect better things, but I fear Delphox will prove a somewhat niche Mega.

:meowstic-f-mega::meowstic-m-mega:
stats/are/worse/than/mega/Alakazam
Ability: Same as Mega Zam

Temu Mega Zam. Only conceivable niche is on a team with base Zam. And I still question why you would use Mega Meowstic over, say, Delphox.

:scovillain-mega:
65/138/85/138/85/75
Ability: Spicy Spray

The thing I like about this thing is you don't have to Mega it. Use base Scovillain, do your stuff under sun, then Mega when you need to burn something. Probably worse than just running Scovillain with Burning Bulwark, but you save a moveslot and get to click a different move that turn.

I know that's not everything but the others bore me.

If I may, can I talk about the other Z-A megas? I’d like to give my thoughts about them and how they could impact the meta.

Edit: Also, how do you implement sprite onto a post?
Edit edit: How do you tag someone?

I can't imagine anyone will complain about a post about the new megas. So long as you stay on the topic of STABmons a little theorymonning is probably fine. The thing to avoid is going excessively off-topic, which can admittedly be hard to judge (nb: I have no authority in this thread or forum, listen to the mods before you listen to me).

As for putting sprites in
:starmie-mega:
Code:

EDIT: sv refers to Scarlet and Violet. If you change it to a different generation's shortcut, say rb, you get :rb/starmie:

tag someone by putting @ then their username. It will not work if it's edited into a post. like this! Giagantic smells

Thanks (for giving me permission to talk about the topic, how to implement sprites, and tagging someone)!

Quick tier list for new Megas:

S+++
Drampa

Not S+++
Everything else
Following drampa's grandpa observance on the ZA megas, I will be listing all the others (with permission).

:clefable-mega:
95/80/93/135/110/70
Ability: Magic Bounce

Mega Clefable could be an interesting threat in the meta, possessing a Fairy/Flying typing, a respectable special attack stat., and a great ability. Not the best speed stat, but it could work on TR teams.

:victreebel-mega:
80/125/85/135/95/70
Ability: Innards Out

Victreebell could be a good suicide lead, trading for a setup sweeper. It only really gains Leaf Blade, Ivy Cudgel, and Malignant Chain (which is a lot actually) with similar attacking stats to Mega Clefable, being able to run a mixed set if possible.

:meganium-mega:
80/92/115/143/115/80
Ability: Mega Sol

Mega Sol is a good ability, giving a permanent Sunny Day, which gives you one turn Solar Beams and a free Fire type move. Not much else to say about it other than that, though.

:feraligatr-mega:
85/160/125/89/93/78
Ability: Dragonize

Poor Feraligatr gains literally next to nothing it terms of moves, besides maybe Wave Crash. Double-Edge is the only decent move boosted by Dragonize. Feraligatr has some things going for it, though, like a massive attack stat and decent bulk. Oh yeah, it has dragon dance too.

:skarmory-mega:
65/140/110/40/100/110
Ability: Stalwart

Stalwart is going to be useless in singles lol. However, it’s going to be a beast offensively with Dragon Ascent, Double Iron Bash, and a pretty decent speed stat.

:chimecho-mega:
75/50/110/135/120/65
Ability: Levitate

Chimecho… um… I have no idea what to say about it. Great defensively and as a TR attacker, but that’s probably about it.

:froslass-mega:
70/80/70/140/100/120
Ability:Snow Warning
A possible threat in the meta, with its great Special Attack, Speed, and tools like Snow Warning, Blizzard, Moongeist Beam, and Aurora Veil to gain good bulk.

:Emboar-mega:
110/148/75/110/110/75
Ability: Mold Breaker

Ogerpon-Hearthflame should watch out, or not. Jokes aside, Mega Emboar could be decent. It gets Mold Breaker, Pyro Ball, Collision Course, with pretty decent stats. It’s bulk is rather underwhelming, however.

:excadrill-mega:
110/165/100/65/65/103
Ability: Piercing Drill

Ah yes, Excadrill. The poster child of Sand teams (along with Ttar) since it’s been on Sand teams since it was first introduced. It doesn’t get a great sand-beneficial ability, but it does have menacing stats, hitting hard and an ability that allows it to hit through protect with STAB moves like Sunsteel Strike, Drill Run, High Horsepower, Iron Head, Headlong Rush, etc. Even without protect, it has Precipe Blades.

:chandelure-mega: :golurk-mega:
60/75/110/175/110/90 (Chandelure)
Ability: Infiltrator
85/159/105/70/105/55 (Golurk)
Ability: Unseen Fist

Chandelure has a massive Special Attack, Moongeist Beam, decent speed, and good bulk. Mega Golurk, however, I like it but not a lot. I don’t like it. It’s slow, it lost No Guard, Rage Fist is restricted, I just don’t like it.

:greninja-mega:
75/125/77/133/81/142
Ability: Protean

Mega Greninja feels the exact same as its non mega form, except with boosted stats. It has somewhat decent attacking stats, a high speed, and it’s normal frailty. It could (key work being could) be strong, like the next pokemon I’m going to mention.

:floette-mega:
74/85/87/155/148/102
Ability: Fairy Aura

As far as I know, Fairy Aura has never existed in a STABmons metagame. It doesn’t gain anything that great, but it still hits super hard with Light of Ruin and Moonblast. Could be one of the best mons in the metagame imo.

:crabominable-mega:
97/157/122/62/107/33
Ability: Iron Fist

If you’ve seen Wolfe’s video where he and Alpharad build a team around this mon, you would know how much they glaze it. Part of the stuff they do say though is pretty true. It does work well inside TR and it has decent bulk. I’m not sure if it will be great here though.

:glimmora-mega:
83/90/105/150/96/101
Ability: Adaptability

This thing is going to be a monster. Malignant Chain is already good, but Glimmora’s monsterous Special Attack and its ability take it to a whole new level. It has a good speed stat and will probably become a nuke to anything slower than it. Not to mention that it has good coverage moves too.

:raichu-mega x:
60/135/95/90/95/110
Ability: Electric Surge

IMG_1148.jpeg

:raichu-mega y:
60/100/55/160/80/130
Ability: No Guard

Raichu Y is going to be insane in this format. Stab-wise, it doesn’t gain many good options, but with its move pool and stats, I think that Rai Y will be amazing in this meta. I don’t think that it will last being legal for long.

:eelektross-mega:
85/80/145/90/135/80
Ability: Eelevitate (Levitate and Beast Boost in one ability)

Eelektross has never really been that great. With this mega evolution, it could actually prove to be viable. Not a top threat, but still decently good.

:dragalge-mega:
65/85/105/132/165/44
Ability: Regenerator

I’m scared of this thing. I’m truly scared of this thing because it’s going to become a staple on stall teams, with Flip Turn, Mortal Spin, Dragon Tail, and whatever other move you think of that could be good on it. Toxapex is already a big threat in this metagame, getting even better with another stall member to toy with your opponents. Be prepared.

:falinks-mega:
65/135/135/70/65/100
Ability: Defiant

I like Mega Falinks. Since when was Defiant ever a bad ability? It gains Thunderous Kick, a pretty good move, and is the only one to have No Retreat. It may not be great, but hey, it might have some niche, right? Also a possible counter to the next mon I will mention.

:scrafty-mega:
65/130/135/55/135/68
Ability: Intimidate

Get countered by Falinks L-Bozo… I mean uh… it serves as a pivoting Intimidate user, something that Incineroar could never be in this format. It also has good bulk, barring 65/135/135, which is pretty respectable.

:staraptor-mega: :malamar-mega:
85/140/100/60/90/110 (Staraptor)
86/102/88/98/120/88 (Malamar)
Ability: Contrary (both)

Man these two get a lot of different moves to be affected by Contrary. Staraptor gets Close Combat and Superpower and Malamar gets Superpower and Psycho Boost (I don’t think it gets Close Combat.) Malamar will definitely be more diverse, being able to run mixed sets, and Staraptor can output massive loads of damage. I look forward to seeing how these two affect the meta.

:gallade-mega:
New Ability: Justified

I know Mega Gallade isn’t new, but I had to include it since it got a new ability. It still sucks and gets outdamaged by its non-mega counterpart.

:drampa-mega:
78/85/110/160/116/36
Ability: Beserk

@drampa’s grandpa didn’t give a full analysis, just that they thought it was perfect. I could see why. Beserk is a really cool ability, further amplifying its already high Special Attack. It’s rather slow, but its other stats help to moderate that.

:pyroar-mega:
86/88/92/129/86/126
Ability: Fire Mane (increases damage of fire moves by 50%)

I don’t have much to say. It has a pretty good speed stat, but that’s probably about it. Also I did it last because I forgot about it lol.

:scolipede-mega:
60/140/149/75/99/62
Ability: Shell Armor

Bug Poison isn’t a great typing per say, but it doesn’t get Mortal Spin, so it could have a use as a spin user.

:barbaracle-mega:
72/140/130/64/106/88
Ability: Tough Claws

This thing is going to be disgusting to face. Shell Smash? On a Tough Claws Pokemon?
Now you’re just asking for trouble. It gets Stone Axe, making it even more annoying.

Will include a VR later on a different post

Will be edited to include everyone later, I had to go somewhere and didn’t want to lose my progress on writing this.

Just to give you a heads up, Megas don't grant you access to STAB if it wasn't your typing prior. A Clefable holding Clefablite will only learn all legal Fairy moves, not all legal Fairy and Flying moves.

Oh. Well I didn’t play past gen STABmons so I didn’t know that’s how it worked. I’ll make sure to change Clefable, Meganium, and Feraligatr. Good to know for other type changing megas! Thank you

View attachment 841624

Will be edited to include a VR later, I had to go somewhere and didn’t want to lose my progress on writing this.
are you suggesting that mega gallade got a new ability in regulation m-b?

:scolipede-mega:

Bug Poison isn’t a great typing per say, but it doesn’t get Mortal Spin, so it could have a use as a spin user.

:barbaracle-mega:
72/140/130/64/106/88
Ability: Tough Claws

This thing is going to be disgusting to face. Shell Smash? On a Tough Claws Pokemon?
Now you’re just asking for trouble. It gets Stone Axe, making it even more annoying.

Will include a VR later on a different post

post OMPL forum post I lost my game like 10 minutes ago and I just wanna share my thoughts on the tier
I'll try not to complain too much but BOY is this tier not fun; it's in a much better place than it was last year but this is still bullshit on bullshit and building a viable team is a fucking nightmare
I'll post teams at the end of this post feel free to scroll down & ignore my yapping to use teams that are inevitably going to be outdated if council decides to unban Ting-Lu

:gholdengo:
Currently S- on the viability ranking, it was inevitable to see Ghold get even better after Lu got banned and I really think this guy should be looked at would Ting-Lu not get unbanned
It's virtually the same mon as in standard play but stronger, with no tinglu to counter it, and with toxapex to serve as free entry when its not clicking flip turn
I've used a variety of sets, from scarf to colbur plot to cloak (+twave or plot depending on the team) and even used custap + dbond on a specific team. While Ghold doesnt get a lot of new toys that would make it even slightly different than it is in OU, it gets marginally stronger and can fit on all sorts of teams, making it really splashable and impossible to not take into account when building.

:toxapex:
Yeahhhh I think this guy kinda sucks by virtue of being one of the only good defensive Pokemon in the format. Almost anything can super easily take advantage of Pex, mainly by running Sub, but it's also really bad at removing hazards as Steel types can use it as a point of entry and Pex ends up clicking Flip Turn more than anything. Offensive AV sets are okay at catching stuff off guard but they end up being significantly worse at taking hits, especially from boosted mons like NP Ghold.
I think Ting-Lu being unbanned would allow Pex to explore more options as it's kind of overwhelmed by everything preying on it.

:zamazenta:
I'm just gonna copypaste what I sent in council chat about this guy I absolutely HATE this guy in the builder it's SO restrictive.
This guy is honestly insanely strong atm because common checks get overwhelmed pretty easily, and would-be checks like Beak Blast defensive mons get set up on (sub Bulk Up is pretty nasty at that, especially if Zama runs Pads or Punching Glove); Zama takes advantage of Toxapex like little else, forcing it to either run Special Attack investment, making it worse at taking hits & checking other dumb mons like Ghold, or run Haze, which is suboptimal in a metagame like STABmons where immediate checks seem to be much more important.
To which someone answered:
Even just considering pex + lando-t, it needs to dedicate essentially 2 moves and its item to get past them, which leaves it checked by so much else.
answer to the above comment:
Zamazenta commonly runs Sub BU Drain Crunch, most of the time with leftovers but we've seen 3a variants with Pads, Cover Cloak and even Punching Glove - it doesn't need 2 moves just for Lando and Pex as Sub BU with Drain Punch and Punching Glove beats both, the only opportunity cost being its item which is still the 2nd best pick behind Lefties
sure it can't do everything at once but what it does with its most common set forces either specific structures, suboptimal checks like sylveon (which sucks ass in no tinglu meta) or your own zama speed creeping itself

:gliscor:
Might just be a personal case of "new toy" syndrome as I've used this guy an insane amount over the last few weeks/days and it's actually really, really good at mowing through unprepared teams. "But Clem" you might say, "how can one be unprepared for Gliscor when Lando is everywhere" and that would be a great question if:
1- Teams commonly answer Lando by overwhelming it OR with their own Lando
2- Gliscor didn't fill a completely different role by virtue of its better comparative bulk, pseudo status immunity & access to better immediate recovery with Poison Heal
Gliscor takes advantage of a LOT of mons, it can freely switch into Pex, Lando, Ttar once Orb is activated, Drill, the list goes on. It's also pretty hard to deal with because of Beak Blast being such a stupid move, and I genuinely think it's a much better defensive Ground type than Lando in that regard, as it's way less often forced to click Shore Up (most Gliscors I've used in tests weren't even Shore Up, as Protect allows you to get out of 2HKO range even from strong special attackers with a good amount of investment in SpDef)

:samurott-hisui:
In a world where Ceaseless is restricted & most Ground types are used to set-up Rocks for their teams, the Spikes Machine that is Samurott-H is actually pretty insane. SD sets can super easily punch through defensive teams while also keeping utility into Offense by clicking Ceaseless or +2 priority moves. I've used this guy a LOT lot throughout this tournament and I think it's one of the most consistent elements of this metagame due to how easily it pressures removal options. +2 BlackGlasses Ceaseless cleaves through Pex, while Aqua Cutter / Razor Shell are super strong into Tusk, Treads and even Sylveon.

:iron-treads:
I clearly overrated this mon after last year's OMPL, even in when Thund-T was allowed it's still very underwhelming; I tried using bulky sets for CB Thund-I as some of my mates were paranoid about this guy and it sucks, it just sucks.
Offensive is pretty good tho.

:hatterene:
Not much to say here I still love that guy.

anyway here's what I built with no explanation, click on sprites for pastes and figure out stuff by yourself

anyways
I really hope this is my last time playing this god forsaken format unless it gets the Big Reset:tm: everyone has been waiting for
The current tiering policy actively makes STABmons worse at being tiered because of how power crept each generation is, especially this one
OM Leaders do not seem to care about the format unless someone is actively yapping/complaining about it, it's only being played and thus tiered during tournaments making fixing the tier a slow, annoying process
I really think things should change or that STABmons as a whole should be reworked, idk, I'm giving up

Following a council vote, Ting-Lu is now unbanned from STABmons!

:sm/ting-lu:

While it was previously banned for being too centralizing, many argued that it would help bring some stability to the metagame. It provides a lot of role compression, being able to check a wide variety of mons while providing strong defensive utility. This should hopefully give many teams a breath of fresh air, and enable a wider range of teams to be viable in light of a new defensive staple. While there are still worries about it being too good as a defensive piece, especially in tandem with Toxapex, there are still many options to deal with the core.
New ressources will be posted in the near future!

Council votes will be edited in tomorrow morning, tagging dhelmise for implementation!
