Superbad is a comedy about two teenage friends and their search for alcohol, parties and most of all, sexual conquest. The movie begins with two friends nearing the end of their high school careers, Hatch up a scheme to provide alcohol for a wild graduation party and the hilarity starts there.
Make no mistake this movie is funny as hell but also twice as crude. Although this movie will no doubt be compared to the american pie series, I think it would be unfair to lump in a story featuring a guy making sweet love to baked goods to the infinitely more clever jokes featured here. The humor in superbad is more along the lines of movies like supertroopers with horny teenagers replacing adult characters. Although this is well below high brow it still is wildly funny which is all that counts.
All the cast gives a pretty solid performance, although you wont see any oscar clips in this film. The actors did well to keep the comedy flowing smoothly throughout meaning when you get this on DVD you wont be hitting the skip button to get to the jokes like i find myself doing with some films because this film does what a comedy is supposed to do and that is just keep the jokes flowing.
Superbad is a step above the traditional teen comedy meaning its actually funny and doesn't need to be a 2 hour long chunk of "jokes replaced with the most disgusting thing the "writers" could think of that is not funny like other films of its genre. I can't say i had high expectations of it but i was greatly surprised and much more entertained than i would if i followed my first choice and saw "WAR". sure, stunts and movie kung fu are cool but they don't hold a candle to comedy gold.
Notes: This movie is rated R for a reason, And if you're overly sensitive you might feel a bit squeamish, but if could handle american pie, you shouldnt have a problem with this one.
Dont wait for the DVD, this movie is worth 10 bucks if you can get in to see it.
Overall 8/10- Good, but not legendary.
