Project SV OU - Lure That Threat - Week 41

Week 22
:SV/cresselia:

Cresselia @ Covert Cloak
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Poison
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Stored Power
- Moonblast
- Moonlight
Cresselia is a Pokemon known for its relation with the moon. Lunar Dance, Moonblast and even Moonlight, one of the key recovery moves of Cresselia, resembles the moon to its finest. Specifically since it is resembling the Crescent Moon with its physique, only a small portion of its power could be seen at a first glance. As the turns progress, we are exposed more and more to the ability of Cresselia to impose itself as a huge menace to our team. It keeps its mind calm against even the harshest arousal of threats, raising it's special attack stats and special defense stats to great extends. A great recovery move in Moonlight helps it heal up any damage done to it. This combination helps Cresselia very much to survive any hit and set up without fearing a faint. With the title of 'set up sweeper' tied to its naturally gained bulk, it also has access to two strong offensively threatening moves in Stored Power and Moonblast. It can even enhance the list of Pokemon it can set up on or attack, with the help of terastalization. Nonethless to say, rather than revolving around the meta by itself, it has been giving off the impressions that the meta is what that revolves around it. It is now time, to say to the goddess of the moon herself, that we would not like her threatening our teams anymore.
The deadline for submissions is 27 June!

This is the only thing I could find that was fast enough to trap and taunt it.
Landorus-Therian @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Block
- Crunch
- Taunt
- Earthquake
The moment cress gets blocked it is basically dead because you can repeatedly taunt it while wearing it down with crunch and if you tera they have absolutely no way of hurting you.
0 SpA Cresselia Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Tera Steel Landorus-Therian: 32-38 (8.3 - 9.9%) -- possibly the worst move ever
If they don't tera they will obviously take a lot from crunch.
4 Atk Tera Steel Landorus-Therian Crunch vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Cresselia: 146-174 (32.8 - 39.1%) -- 99.8% chance to 3HKO
But even if they do you can definitely ko them before they do any major damage to you.
4 Atk Tera Steel Landorus-Therian Crunch vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tera Poison Cresselia: 73-87 (16.4 - 19.5%) -- possible 6HKO

Space Hos (Enamorus) @ Leftovers
Ability: Contrary
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 64 HP / 252 SpA / 192 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Substitute / Earth Power
- Imprison
- Moonblast

enamorus has proven to be a deadly special attacker/setup sweeper this generation utilizing its strong stats and diverse special move pool. Cresselia’s natural special bulk as well as ability combined with tera lends itself pretty well to set up against enams most common moves, earth power and moonblast. As such cress would happily take the set up opportunity and switch in against Enamorus, unluckily for Cress a hefty imprison is coming it’s way, imprison locks out CM and moonblast from Cresslias options allowing for Enamorus to set up multiple CM’s and subs against Cress’s weak stored power since it is unable to boost.

Enamorus can even win in the opposite of this scenario. If Enam is forced to switch in on a Cress setup attempt it’s speed evs will allow it to always outspeed and deny any further CM/Moonblast attempts, and even if Enam is hit with a Moonblast upon switching in it will only take at max 25% (excluding leftovers)

tldr: outspeed -> imprison -> tera -> sub -> CM -> gg

oh but fancy i here you say what if my cress decided to tera and wall your Moonblast and EP

+6 252+ SpA Enamorus Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Tera Poison Cresselia: 299-352 (67.3 - 79.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

0 SpA Cresselia Moonblast vs. 64 HP / 0 SpD Enamorus: 65-77 (21.3 - 25.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Cresselia Stored Power (20 BP) vs. 64 HP / 0 SpD Enamorus: 21-25 (6.8 - 8.1%) -- possibly the worst move ever

0 SpA Cresselia Moonblast vs. 64 HP / 0 SpD Tera Steel Enamorus: 32-38 (10.4 - 12.4%) -- possibly the worst move ever

Clodsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP/4 Def/252 SpD
Careful Nature
Tera-Type: Dark
- Earthquake
- Zen Headbutt
- Toxic
- Recover

Clodsire returneth!

You'd think Unaware would protect Clodsire from set-up sweepers such as Cresselia, but unfortunately, Cress has the one tool that can break past Unaware in Stored Power, which gets more... well, power, the more boosts the user has accumulated. Not to mention that Clod gets hit super-effectively, which only makes trying to tank the hit even harder.

This time we return to the standard Clod loadout, with a couple minor adjustments. The first is a switch in Tera-Type from Water to Dark. This completely shuts down Stored Power, forcing Cress to resort to Moonblast to try and beat Clod... and fail miserably at that.

0 SpA Cresselia Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Tera Dark Clodsire: 78-94 (16.8 - 20.2%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery

(Keep in mind that that's from a super-effective hit, now)

The second adjustment is the use of Zen Headbutt over Rocks. This gives Cress an ultimatum; either maintain its vulnerability to Toxic, which'll wear it down over time and make it eventually lose the 1v1 vs anyone, or protect itself and the rest of the team in exchange for getting smacked by a super-effective move that outdamages Moonblast, allowing Clod to win the 1v1 anyway.

0 Atk Tera Dark Clodsire Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tera Poison Cresselia: 84-100 (18.9 - 22.5%) -- possible 5HKO

hawlucha.gif

Hawlucha @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Unburden
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 40 HP / 104 Atk / 252 SpD / 112 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Acrobatics
- Fire Punch/Defog/Taunt

The standard Hawlucha set doesn't have enough power to take out Cresselia, even after a Swords Dance, and is vulnerable to being 2HKOd in return. That being said, nobody is stupid enough to underestimate what this bird can do late game. The Cresselia user knows that it would be unwise to let Hawlucha set up, and they have a perfectly good 95 power super effective move to deal massive damage to it. Furthermore, most Hawlucha activate their Unburden ability using White Herb Close Combat. Against Cresselia, this is effectively a wasted turn as, both before and after Tera, it's a resisted hit. Hawlucha is not a sitting duck in front of Cresselia, which incentivises the wall to KO it sooner rather than later. That will be its downfall.

If Cresselia is swapping in, Hawlucha would likely be using Swords Dance, which isn't enough to be threatening without a base 110 power acrobatics (and as established, to use CC and use up the white herb would be a waste of a turn). Cresselia would press Moonblast here, and Hawlucha is EV'd to tank two of them after Stealth Rocks.

0 SpA Cresselia Moonblast vs. 40 HP / 252 SpD Hawlucha: 112-134 (36.4 - 43.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Hawlucha should press Swords Dance on this same turn, and combined with the Weakness Policy, it would reach +6 attack in the span of two turns, along with getting a full power acrobatics and doubling its speed (all without dropping below half health, assuming rocks aren't on the field). From here, Acrobatics OHKOs Cresselia and likely every other pokemon on the enemy team.

+6 104 Atk Hawlucha Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Cresselia: 451-532 (101.5 - 119.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

This is the ideal scenario, but Hawlucha is able to adapt if things don't go as well. For example, if Hawlucha is not at +2 when Cresselia comes in, for whatever reason, this would only get it to +4 after the Weakness Policy + Swords Dance combo. +4 attack, even with the full power Acrobatics, is not enough to take out Cresselia. This is why Hawlucha is EV'd to be able to take a second Moonblast, but if the user wants to keep it relatively healthy, the power boost from Tera Flying will pick up the KO on Cresselia, even at +4.

As for the rest of the set, Jolly + 112 speed EVs outspeeds the base 100s before Unburden. I didn't see a point in trying to hit higher benchmarks because a Hawlucha without Unburden also has a base 55 power acrobatics, which means it'll generally lose to some of the faster pokemon, such as Iron Moth and Enamorus, anyway.

Close Combat and Acrobatics are our powerful STAB moves, and the last move is up to you. I'd recommend Fire Punch to smack Gholdengo, which has a chance to KO after rocks (at +6)
+6 104 Atk Hawlucha Fire Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Gholdengo: 334-394 (88.3 - 104.2%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Alternatively you can run defog if your team needs hazard support, especially since this is a specially bulky Hawlucha, and can probably get off the move in a rough spot. If your team needs a stallbreaker, or if you're afraid of Cresselia pressing Calm Mind instead of attacking you, Taunt is the way to go. You can even slot in roost, but I doubt you'd get the chance to use it.

TLDR:

Weakness Policy Hawlucha takes advantage of Cresselia to set your team up for a sweep in just 2 turns. Excluding Unaware mons, I don't think anything in OU can take two hits from this thing (And the ones that can are probably too defensive to actually KO Hawlucha in return). Overall, a very strong wincon.

Slowking-Galar @ Choice Specs
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Trick
- Psyshock
- Slack Off
- Flamethrower

Very simple idea, Cress gets a free switch on the usual Glowking set so we abuse this by tricking it a choice and it essentially becomes an un-mon, the rest of the moveset lets it beat choiced locked cress always with recovery and psyshock that hits the unbuffed def.

+1 0 SpA Choice Specs Cresselia Stored Power (60 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Slowking-Galar: 105-124 (26.6 - 31.4%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
+1 0 SpA Choice Specs Cresselia Stored Power (60 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Tera Steel Slowking-Galar: 52-62 (13.1 - 15.7%) -- possible 7HKO

252+ SpA Slowking-Galar Psyshock vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Cresselia: 59-69 (13.2 - 15.5%) -- possible 7HKO

Regular Slowking might be a better lure since it resists psychic but specs is better on the mon with more Spa.

Was going to post Iron Treads again, but being a Steel type faster than Cresselia, its not good as a lure. So, we put the other elephant:

:great_tusk:

Great Tusk @ Booster Energy
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 248 HP / 4 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Bulk Up
- Knock Off
- Close Combat
- Zen Headbutt

Usually, Cresselia will see a Speed Booster Energy Tusk and assume Bulk Up (which Tusk will use on the switch) + CC, EQ and Ice Spinner. Cresselia easily walls such a set and even can afford using CM at least once.

However, this Tusk will use Knock Off + Tera Dark instead:

+1 4 Atk Protosynthesis Tera Dark Great Tusk Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Cresselia: 474-558 (106.7 - 125.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Without Tera, it still does a lot:

+1 4 Atk Protosynthesis Great Tusk Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Cresselia: 316-372 (71.1 - 83.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Of course, Cresselia might predict the Knock Off, transforming the calc into either this:

+1 4 Atk Protosynthesis Tera Dark Great Tusk Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tera Poison Cresselia: 237-279 (53.3 - 62.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Or this:

+1 4 Atk Protosynthesis Great Tusk Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tera Poison Cresselia: 158-186 (35.5 - 41.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
But if Cresselia does that, it won,t be able to kill Tusk in 2 hits anyway:

0 SpA Tera Poison Cresselia Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Great Tusk: 180-212 (41.4 - 48.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Meanwhile, after seeing Tera Poison, Tusk will reveal the second secret weapon, Zen Headbutt:

+1 4 Atk Protosynthesis Great Tusk Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tera Poison Cresselia: 260-308 (58.5 - 69.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

35,5 + 58,5 = 94 is the minimum damage Tusk will do without Tera with Knock Off + Zen Headbutt. If Tusk goes Tera, it will always KO in 2 hits (unless miss) while always (unless crit) avoiding the 2HKO from Moonblast. This Great Tusk succesfully lures and eliminates one of the biggest standard Great Tusk counters. Tera helps, but its not even needed to almost always defeat Cresselia.

Protosynthesis shouldn't be active, it ruins all your calcs.

EVs: 172 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD / 80 Spe

What's the best way to counter stored power? Power trip. Corvi here is noreally easy setup fodder for the moon Mon, but power trip easily turns the tables. Whether you run agility or.body press is up to you, but don't run the speed investment with body press. Speaking of the investment let's you outspeed meow and cinderace after an agility.

Amoonguss @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Spore
- Sludge Bomb
- Clear Smog
- Grass Knot

In this week's edition of Lure That Threat: We are now delving inside the deep, green forests of the Unova region. Just as magnificent as how the sunrays scatter under sweet scenting berry trees, the enchanting lullaby of tranquility is terrifying. As many dangers lurk by your side in just matter of seconds, it is hard to not rethink the idea of visiting one. A forest of this kind, marks the birthplace of many varities of Pokémon. Our Today's aim is to meet a very certain kind of species, namely, Amoonguss. One of this kind was first found in the Unova region, and recently have been found in the wilds of Paldea region. It is known to be a Pokémon that volunteers it's role on bulky offensive and balance teams. It threatens to use sleep inducing Spore at your Pokémon while unhesitatingly spitting Sludge bombs at them. Grass knot has been in trend for this Pokémon as it can take advantage of the weight of it's opponents to their own disadvantage. It does not grant any chances for you to set up on it, with the help of clear smog. Terastalization enhances the amount of threats it can check, by granting it entirely new weaknesses and resistances. The chip from rocky helmet is very overwhelming to some styles, and regenerator in its own has never needed a specific introduction. To shrink everything, it provides you a physically bulky sleeper who cannot possibly be completely useless at any cost. It's time for us to Lure it down.
The final deadline for submissions will be July 3!

decidueye.gif

Decidueye @ Covert Cloak
Ability: Long Reach
Tera Type: Ghost/Fighting
EVs: 212 HP / 200 Atk / 96 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Spirit Shackle
- Leaf Blade/Low Kick
- Roost/Shadow Sneak/Low Kick

Pretty straightforward strategy we have here. When the Amoongus swaps in, it doesn't matter if we've used Swords Dance or Spirit Shackle. We've already won. The Amoongus won't feel threatened because Decidueye is not a very powerful attacker, especially since it's generally physical, and Amoongus is a physical wall here. If we set up, it can just use clear smog to wipe away our boosts. Then it spams Sludge Bomb until it poisons and we'll eventually go down. Or so it would think.

Spirit Shackle traps the Amoongus, immediately sealing its fate. No more recovery with regenerator. Now the only way for Amoongus to survive is to kill Decidueye. This isn't normally a problem considering a STAB Sludge Bomb from offences higher than Talonflame does more damage than unboosted Spirit Shackles. But then Decidueye will start setting up. The Amoongus will press Clear Smog to wipe away those boosts, laughing at the turn the enemy just decided to waste. But then... Decidueye keeps its boosts. The Covert Cloak eliminates any chance Amoongus has of stopping Decidueye from setting up. It also removes the chance Amoongus has of poisoning with Sludge Bomb. And being a grass type, grass knot is weak and Spore is ineffective. All Amoongus can do is spam Sludge Bomb, hoping for a crit. Not that it would help.

0 SpA Amoonguss Sludge Bomb vs. 212 HP / 0 SpD Decidueye: 84-100 (24 - 28.5%) -- 97.1% chance to 4HKO

Not nearly enough damage. And as soon as Amoongus brings Decidueye into yellow health, it reveals Roost, forcing Amoongus to start over. After 3 Swords Dance boosts (Or two plus Tera), Decidueye finally has the damage output it needs to OHKO Amoongus, even bypassing the Rocky Helmet thanks to Long Reach.

+6 200+ Atk Decidueye Spirit Shackle vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Amoonguss: 433-510 (100.2 - 118%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Now you have a ~75% health Decidueye at +6 attack ready to face down the rest of the enemy team. To explain the rest of the set, the speed investment is to outrun Adamant max speed Kingambit, which can be OHKOd after a bit of chip damage (Possibly via hazards). You'd need to be wary of Sucker Punch, but we'll get into that in a bit. The rest of the EVs go into health to maximise bulk. As for the moves, this is where it comes down to preference.

Decidueye can set up to +6 in front of Amoongus, but it'll be in red health by the end and easily revenge killed by any priority move. This is why I think Roost is the most viable 4th move on it., alongside the dual-STAB of Spirit Shackle and Leaf Blade. However, your other options are as follows:

Low Kick over either Leaf Blade or Roost provides Decidueye with the almost entirely unresisted Ghost Fighting coverage. Aside from Hisuian Zorua/Zoroark, nothing wants to take these moves, especially at +6. Decidueye will be able to smack other counters such as Kingambit and even Roaring Moon. Tera Fighting can be used, in this case, for defensive utility against dark types alongside boosting Low Kick to sky high levels.

Shadow Sneak can replace Roost on the original set (In this case, run Tera Ghost) to help Decidueye fix its speed problem. A +6 Tera Ghost boosted Shadow Sneak hits pretty hard, almost 2HKOing Kingambit (but more importantly, causing Sucker Punch to fail. This would help with the prediction games). This does, however, hurt Decidueye's offensive abilities, which is especially important considering the lack of Roost leaves Decidueye at low health after dealing with Amoongus.

TLDR: We turn Amoongus into setup fodder for this underused, but very customisable, bird.
