What is STAAABmons?
STAAABmons is a mashup of STABmons and Almost Any Ability (AAA), which means that Pokemon have access to (almost) any ability as well as every unrestricted move they share a type with. With expanded access to utility moves, helpful abilities, and powerful STAB options, nearly every Pokemon can find a niche in this fast-paced metagame!

Bans and Restrictions

Species Clause: A player cannot have two Pokemon with the same National Pokédex number on a team.
OHKO Clause: A Pokemon may not have the moves Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill, or Sheer Cold in its moveset.
Evasion Clause: A Pokemon may not have either Double Team or Minimize in its moveset.
Sleep Moves Clause: Bans all moves that induce sleep.
Endless Battle Clause: Players cannot intentionally prevent an opponent from being able to end the game without forfeiting.
Single Ability Clause: Two Pokemon on the same team may not share an ability.
Terastal Clause: Prevents Pokémon from Terastallizing.

I'm so happy this format has returned from its slumber! Early Generation 9 took its toll on the metagame, and it's nice to STAAAB return to an enjoyable state. Here's an RMT and my thoughts on the metagame and various factors within it.

CRISIS ON INFINITE CRISES

Honestly, this is the team I'm most proud of so far. I was incredibly hesitant to include a team with two *very* niche Pokemon into our samples, but this team has a lot of excellent synergy and showcases many of the unique situations that can only happen in STAAABmons.
Final Crisis (Gengar) @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
Tera Type: Ghost

Gengar has always been a strong contender in STAAAB, and it's only been further buffed by the addition of Malignant Chain. Last generation, Gengar's most potent sets were choice locked, often with a simple power-boosting ability, but occasionally using immunities like Dazzling and Storm Drain to shore up a weakness in the team. The most powerful set was SFLO Nasty Plot, which was immensely risky but provided some truly absurd numbers, notably scoring a 2HKO on specially defensive Chansey. I wanted to build this team around that same absurd damage output with a special new tool: Infernal Parade reaches a whopping 156 Base Power against statused foes, and with some proper team support Gengar could easily steamroll some fatter teams. I chose Substitute over Nasty Plot because I simply didn't think Gengar could get off a Nasty Plot, and later realized that Substitute capitalized on the threat Gengar posed much more effectively. This set can do some truly absurd things even without a +2 boost, and was great at pressuring special walls like Hisuian Goodra and Ting-Lu, often able to clean up after hitting a single Focus Blast.

I built the rest of the team with our special little boy in mind. First, I needed something to punish scarfers seeking to slap Gengar with a slight breeze and crumple it. A Ground immunity and Knock Off resist were nice bonuses, so I settled on Galarian Weezing.
Crisis on Earth 2 (Weezing-Galar) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Earth Eater
Tera Type: Poison
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe

This Pokemon also saw use last gen, with a very similar set, because of its fantastic typing. With the addition of Mortal Spin, Weezing could now remove hazards and provide two forms of status to further support Gengar's Infernal Parade. Between its excellent set of resistances and immunities as well as the threat of Burn and Poison, Weezing forces a surprising amount of switches, giving it ample opportunity to use Moonlight to get back to full. Weezing is the only form of hazard removal on this team, which is acceptable. Spikes aren't super common here (most Ground types have better things to run), and Rocks are fairly manageable thanks to the frequent opportunities to use Moonlight. Overall, a pretty good Pokemon and I'll probably fight to raise it in the VR during the next update.
Infinite Earths (Rotom-Wash) @ Leftovers

Rotom-Wash was an interesting team member, probably the weakest link and most replaceable. Chosen for the fantastic type synergy with the rest of the defensive core, while also providing consistent and extremely useful status in Nuzzle and Scald. Unaware feels like an odd choice but it performed the best; Weezing can only handle Pokemon actively setting up into it, whereas Rotom can come in on quite a bit of threats and either take a hit or outspeed them.
Identity Crisis (Probopass) @ Assault Vest

Yeah. I dropped this set into the staaab channel in ommcord as a joke/threat, but I kept thinking about it and realized it could actually have potential. Weezing, Rotom, and Probopass form a tight and adaptable defensive hazard/status core that comprehensively covers each others' weaknesses and shortcomings. Probopass is here as a solid defensive pivot with excellent role compression, able to make progress on nearly anything between Stone Axe and Salt Cure chip. This stupid rock is far better than it has any right to be, and with the proper team support it excells for some reason.
Dark Crisis (Ting-Lu) @ Covert Cloak
Ability: Water Absorb
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 HP / 96 Def / 160 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe

Ting-Lu's great here. A lot of abilities I could have ran, but Water Absorb proved the most useful. Solid wall and pivot with excellent synergy with the rest of the team. Didn't put too much thought into this one, it's just the glue that fits best with the other Pokemon.
Zero Hour (Ogerpon) (F) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Magic Guard
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature

- Head Smash
This team is rather vulnerable to hazards, which are thankfully sparse outside of rocks. Ogerpon gets quite a bit of use out of Magic Guard, which also enables high base power moves comparable to the Sharpness set. I ran an Adamant nature, as the 110 speed tier is less crowded this generation and Ogerpon still reaches a respectable 319 speed, while also giving these moves the extra boost to get some nice 2HKOs.

Some other thoughts on the metagame:
:ogerpon: This mon is crazy. Offensive sets are the gold standard for versatile attacker in the tier. Easily tailored to the specific offensive needs of your team while shoring up key weaknesses. Great win condition. I swear there's a defensive set possible thanks to the fantastic support movepool it has access to, but why do that when you can use Sharpness?
:great tusk: Greatest Tusk, only slightly less load-bearing than Corviknight. Unlike Corviknight, it has fantastic offensive presence while also having the potential to be a win condition thanks to Rapid Spin + Bulk Up sweeps. Scrappy is the best ability and Covert Cloak is the best item, but these can easily be varied to be a better glue for the team.
:zamazenta: Scariest speed tier in the format, somewhat versatile. Banded Sword of Ruin is good if predictable, while Purifying Salt Ironpress is an excellent win condition, even if it's shut down by Haze.
:mamoswine: Extremely versatile, packing excellent power while also able to use Chilly Reception for momentum. Had a lot of fun with Choice Band sets, but it looks like Loaded Dice + Icicle Spear/Hazard/Chilly/Filler is a strong pivot as well.
:toxapex::goodra-hisui::primarina::empoleon: RegenVest is good, as usual, and these four stand out as the best. While Toxapex and Goodra stand out for their excellent bulk and utility movepools, Primarina and Empoleon are great choices if they fit your team a little better. Empoleon is more or less Diet Goodra (with access to a pivot move), while Primarina's unique typing and much stronger offensive presence can fill a valuable niche on a team.
:gengar::greninja::iron moth::thundurus: Fast and dangerous. They can all be played around and dealt with, but apply a lot of pressure to teams without a solid check to them. While setup sets (Nasty Plot or Torch Song) are extra strong, these Pokemon are also strong enough by themselves to justify running Choice Specs or even an all-out attacker set. Make sure you have something that can outspeed these guys, or else your team WILL crumble.
:corviknight::pecharunt::skarmory::great tusk: The four premiere physical walls, each has something great to offer. Corviknight, as always, is on a majority of teams, able to easily tank hits, pivot, and now spread status with Beak Blast. Pecharunt's excellent typing and set variety makes it unpredictable and extra-useful, and it's able to effectively bluff other sets to keep your opponent playing carefully. Skarmory serves a fairly different role to Corviknight, acting as a hard stop able to set hazards, phase, or set up with IronPress.

MID-TOURNAMENT METAGAME UPDATE

Effective immediately, Thundurus and Ceruledge are banned from STAAABmons!
:thundurus: An extremely potent STAB combination with access to fantastic ability synergy, Thundurus was able to blow through all of its checks with sufficient chip and team support. Sets such as SFLO, No Guard, Primordial Sea, and Adaptability were all extremely powerful and could get around walls like Goodra-H, Ting-Lu, and any specially defensive Pokemon running Volt Absorb to catch it off guard.
:ceruledge: Ceruledge also had an extremely potent STAB combination with access to fantastic ability synergy, and could also blow through all of its checks with sufficient chip and team support. Ghost + Fire has fantastic coverage, and in a format where immunity abilities aren't as common, it was able to blow through many cores with a strong hit and end games off of a single round of setup.
Both of these Pokemon were problematic and caused restrictions on teambuilding, we're excited to see where the metagame takes us after this change.

i also find zama to be a little annoying since ctorque bulk up sub invalidates many of its answers but thats also partly a ctorque issue in the bypass helmet/beak blast + parafishing (ig im sorta seeing the ctorque ban in stab asw)

overall pretty fun tier
