[Overview]

Swellow has always been one of the fastest Pokemon around, using its remarkable base 125 Speed to jet around the opposition. Guts makes Swellow a very strong Pokemon, bold enough to take on the opposition even when all hope is gone! People who are new to NU often ask "Why does every team have a Rock-type," and the answer is simple: Swellow. Swellow long ago cemented itself as a top-tier offensive threat that must be prepared for. It has an enormous influence on the metagame, as any team without a Rock-type will be destroyed. However, despite being so defining, it has not been as common as of late due to the rise of other powerful Normal-types, such as Zangoose, Braviary, and Cinccino. The usage of other Normal- and Flying-types has made Swellow anti-metagame—that is— a Pokemon that functions very well in the tier without being as popular as it should be. Swellow is an excellent answer to the aforementioned threats, revenge killing all of them. However, not everything is great for this swell bird, as it has little coverage to speak of and is always on a timer due to its Toxic Orb, which when combined with its Stealth Rock weakness makes it difficult to take advantage of Swellow's strengths.

move 2: Brave Bird
move 3: U-turn
move 4: Quick Attack / Protect
item: Toxic Orb
ability: Guts
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This is the only set that Swellow should ever run, as it takes advantage of all of Swellow's perks. Guts turns Swellow into an offensive powerhouse, steamrolling through everything in its path. Facade is truly monstrous and is the move that you will use most of the time, as it reaches a remarkable 210 Base Power after STAB, OHKOing threats such as Cinccino, Fraxure, and Gardevoir. Brave Bird should be used sparingly due to the heavy amount of recoil, but is a necessity to KO Pokemon that are weak to Flying-type attacks such as Serperior, Amoonguss, and Gurdurr. U-turn is a handy move to have, as it allows you to weaken the opposition with light blows—and hopefully hazard support—until they are weak enough for Swellow to defeat them with Facade. The choice between Quick Attack and Protect is a tough one; Quick Attack is generally preferable as priority will be more useful throughout the entire match, whilst Protect is primarily used as a way to activate Toxic Orb for free. Quick Attack can also be used to dodge Sucker Punch from Pokemon such as Absol, allowing you to win one on one with proper prediction.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Maximum Attack and Speed EVs are standard for physical sweepers, while a Jolly nature is used to outspeed threats such as Zebstrika and Cinccino that lack a Choice Scarf. Adamant should never be considered, as the drop in Speed is not worth the increase in strength. A Flame Orb is also an option if Swellow is going to stay in for more than a few turns, but Swellow is a hit-and-run Pokemon and generally won't stay in the battle for very long.

Swellow needs Stealth Rock off the field to function at its full potential, so running a Rapid Spin user is a necessity. Armaldo is without a doubt the best possible partner for Swellow, as it removes opposing Rock-types for Swellow while also keeping Stealth Rock off the field. If for some reason Armaldo is not an option, packing a Pokemon that can prohibit Stealth Rock from being used in the first place, whether it be a Mold Breaker Pokemon—such as Rampardos—or multi-hitting Pokemon that can OHKO through Sturdy, such as Marowak or Torterra. All three work very well with Swellow, OHKOing many Rock-type leads such as Golem, one of the most popular user of Stealth Rock in the tier, while providing their own entry hazards. Swellow also appreciates Spikes support, as it forces many switches and can take advantage of the residual damage to gain even more KOs with Facade. Zangoose makes a great sweeping partner for Swellow, as it can remove Rock-types from the match with ease, yet struggles with fast Pokemon like Cinccino, which Swellow swiftly OHKOes. Ludicolo also works wonders with Swellow, as it decimates nearly every possible Swellow check with its powerful STAB Hydro Pump. In reality, any of the many common Pokemon that can defeat the ever common Rock-types will work great with Swellow. Sawk has its devastating Close Combat, while Mantine, Samurott, and Simipour have a useful Water-type STAB. Sawsbuck also works well with Swellow as it can defeat Rock-types with Horn Leech and use Alomomola as setup bait, allowing it to sweep in a pinch. Gurdurr also appreciates Swellow support as it struggles against powerful special attackers, many of which Swellow can easily handle. In return, Gurdurr has a powerful Fighting-type STAB to defeat most of Swellow's common counters. Absol works well as it has a powerful Superpower to hit Rock-types as well as STAB Dark-type attacks to hit Misdreavus, a huge problem for Swellow. Calm Mind Serperior also defeats most of Swellow's counters and appreciates weakened special walls. Ground-types such as Golem and Golurk work well as they can hit Rock-types super effectively and beat Electric-types, many of which carry a Choice Scarf and can OHKO Swellow. Magnet Pull Probopass also works exceptionally well, as it can trap and defeat opposing Probopass, Klang, and Bastiodon, while also providing Stealth Rock for Swellow. It is worth noting that running Armaldo along with Probopass is not recommended, as they share many weaknesses and have similar roles on the team, so a different way to keep hazards off the field will need to be found.

[Other Options]

Realistically, you shouldn't be using anything that isn't a part of the main set. However, if you are not a gutsy user then a set that uses Scrappy along with Choice Band is viable to hit Ghost-types. The lack of a boosted Facade is somewhat disheartening, as Swellow must rely on the much weaker Return as a Normal-type STAB. Endeavor is somewhat usable, but with Toxic Orb recoil it will be difficult to time it right; waiting too long will mean the demise of Swellow. If you want to potentially 4HKO Regirock with a super effective move you can use Steel Wing, which hits Rock-types harder than any other move Swellow has, although it still does laughable damage to most of them. Pursuit is among the more viable options, as hitting a Haunter as it tries to escape can bring great joy; however, it is very difficult to fit onto the main set, as the standard moves are quite necessary. A SubRoost set would allow Swellow to scout and maintain its health. In fact, Roost is a handy move as Swellow is always on a timer, and with Flame Orb can be used to recover HP in a pinch.

[Checks and Counters]

Due to Swellow's lack of any real coverage options, anything that resists its STAB combination is a counter. The many Rock-types in the tier are able to destroy Swellow, limiting its usefulness until they are defeated. Probopass, Golem, and Regirock are among the most common Rock-types and are all capable of walling Swellow to oblivion. But that's not all! Bastiodon, Carracosta, Gigalith, and Armaldo also don't care about Swellow and can retaliate with STAB super effective attacks. Klang is a great answer to Swellow, as it resists every move it can viably use and can set up with Shift Gear. It is one of the best answers to Swellow that an offensive team can ask for, as Swellow makes a Klang user very happy. Alomomola can take on Swellow thanks to its sheer bulk, using Wish and Protect to rack up Toxic Orb damage on Swellow. Misdreavus cannot do anything back to Swellow, but can force it to kill itself with a combination of Stealth Rock, Brave Bird, and Toxic Orb damage. Nearly all of the common Choice Scarf Pokemon in NU are capable of revenge killing Swellow. The most common Choice Scarf Pokemon, Electric-types, are also able to hit Swellow super effectively. Rotom-S, Electabuzz, and Zebstrika can all KO with Volt Switch or Thunderbolt, while other Choice Scarf Pokemon such as Braviary can OHKO with Brave Bird. Ghost-types such as Golurk and Drifblim can force Swellow to use Brave Bird, meaning that Swellow will practically kill itself in order to combat them due to Brave Bird's recoil being based on the damage to their enormous HP stats. Powerful priority wrecks Swellow, as it is incredibly frail and relies on its Speed to be successful. Priority from the likes of Absol, Skuntank, or Samurott is capable of defeating Swellow, although the first two must look out for Quick Attack, which can dodge Sucker Punch. Piloswine is a great switch-in as it can tank a hit and OHKO with Ice Shard. Most importantly, one of the easiest ways to defeat Swellow is to keep Stealth Rock on the field. Between Stealth Rock damage, Toxic Orb damage, and Brave Bird recoil, Swellow's wings will swiftly be clipped.

Magnet pull probopass wants a mention as it is an excellent partner for swellow, smashing steels and getting up SR as well as being able to get swellow in safely with a slow volt switch and having good synergy. If in doubt, go ask NLI.

MMF

Give me the strength to part this sea
Mention CM Serperior as a good teammate since it can set up on Golem and company either preventing them from getting up SR or taking them down to Sturdy letting Swellow kill them. Also mention Golem and Golurk as solid teammates since both beat most electric types(mainly Rotom-S and Zebstrika) while also setting up SR and smashing Swellow checks with EQ respectively.

After that

Swellow

[Overview]

Swellow has always been one of the fastest Pokemon around, using its remarkable base 125 Speed to jet around the opposition. Guts makes Swellow a very strong Pokemon, bold enough to take on the opposition even when all hope is gone! People who are new to NU often ask "Why does every team have a Rock-type, (comma)" and the answer is simple, : (colon instead of comma) Swellow. Swellow influences the metagame so much It has an enormous influence on the metagame, as any team without one of Swellow's counters will be destroyed. Swellow has long since long ago cemented itself as a top-tier offensive threat that must be prepared for. (put this sentence before the previous one) However, despite being so defining, (comma) it has not been as common as of late, (unnecessary comma) due to the rise of other powerful Normal-types such as Zangoose, Braviary, and Cinccino. The usage of other Normal-types ("types" only has to go at the end of the list when you're mentioning multiple types) and Flying-types have made Swellow anti-meta, that is, (comma) a Pokemon that functions very well in the tier without being as popular as it should be. Swellow is an excellent answer too (misspelling) the aforementioned threats, revenge killing all of them. Everything is not great for Swellow this swell bird (getting a little repetitive) though, as it has no little (lol, it does have some coverage) coverage to speak of and is always on a timer due to Toxic Orb, which when combined with its Stealth Rock weakness, (think that comma is unnecessary, but not sure) makes it difficult to take advantage of Swellow's strengths.

[SET COMMENTS]

This is the only set that Swellow should ever run, as it takes advantage of all of Swellow's perks at once. Guts turns Swellow into an offensive monster powerhouse (somewhat repetitive with "monstrous" Facade mentioned right after this), steamrolling through everything in its path. Facade is truly monstrous, as with Guts even base 85 Attack is high! Facade and (unnecessary when you mention the power of it again immediately after) is the move that you will use most of the time, (unnecessary comma) as it reaches a remarkable 210 Base Power after STAB, OHKOing threats such as Cinccino, Fraxure and Gardevoir outright. Brave Bird should be used sparingly due to the heavy amount of recoil, but is a necessity to KO Pokemon that are weak to Flying-type attacks such as Serperior, Amoonguss, and Gurdurr. U-turn is a handy move to have, as it allows you to weaken the opposition with light blows and hopefully entry hazards until they are weak enough for Swellow to defeat them with Facade. The choice between Quick Attack and Protect is a tough one, ; (semicolon instead of comma) Quick Attack is generally preferred since it has more usefulness priority will be more useful throughout the entire match, whilst Protect is only useful once primarily used as a way to activate Toxic Orb for free. Quick Attack can also be used to dodge Sucker Punches from Absol, allowing you to win 1v1 if you predict right with proper prediction (it looks better this way).

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EV spread is very simple, maximize your speed and power, use a Jolly nature since you don't want Zebstrika and Cinccino outspeeding you if they aren't holding a Choice Scarf. Maximum attack and speed EV investment is standard for physical sweepers, while a Jolly nature is used to make sure you outspeed threats such as Zebstrika and Cinccino (that aren't running Choice Scarf, of course). (sorry, that sentence was a bit messy and I didn't really know how I could fix it other than a full rewrite) Adamant should never seriously be considered, as the drop in Speed is not worth the increase in power strength ("power" and "powerful" are being used a bit too much). A Flame Orb is also an option if Swellow is going to stay in for more than a few turns, but Swellow is a hit and run Pokemon and generally won't stay in the battle for very long.

Swellow needs Stealth Rock off of the field in order to function to its full potential, because of this running a Pokemon with Rapid Spin is a necessity. If for some reason Armaldo is not an option, packing a Pokemon that can prohibit Stealth Rock from being used in the first place, whether it is be powerful hard-hitting Mold Breaker Pokemon such as Rampardos or powerful (repetition) multi-hitting Pokemon that can OHKO through Sturdy such as Marowak or Torterra. All three work very well with Swellow, OHKOing many Rock-type leads such as Golem, the most popular user of Stealth Rock in the tier, while providing their own entry hazards. Swellow also appreciates Spikes support, as it forces many switches and can take advantage of them as Facade gets even more KOes with a little residual damage. Zangoose makes a great sweeping partner for Swellow, as it can remove Rock-types from the match with ease yet struggles with fast Pokemon such as Cinccino, which Swellow swiftly OHKOes (misspelling, btw I fucking hate having to remember the difference between OHKOes and OHKOs). Ludicolo also works wonders with Swellow, as it decimates nearly every possible Swellow check with its powergul powerful STAB Hydro Pumps. In reality fact (never seen "In reality" before, not sure if it fits in the way you're trying to use it), anything that can defeat the ever common Rock-types will work great with Swellow, and many common Pokemon are capable of doing just that. Sawk has its powerful devastating Close Combat, Mantine its Hydro Pump, Samurott can use either Waterfall or Hydro Pump, and Simipour its Water-type STAB while Mantine, Samurott, and Simipour have a useful Water-type STAB. Sawsbuck also works well with Swellow since it can defeat the (unnecessary) Rock-types with Horn Leech as well as use Alomomola as set up bait, allowing it to sweep in a pinch. Gurdurr also appreciates Swellow support since it struggles against powerful Special Attackers, many of which are capable of being defeated by Swellow Swellow can easily handle (it seemed a little awkward reading it the other way). In return Gurdurr has a powerful Fighting-type STAB to defeat most of Swellow's common counters. Absol works well since it has a powerful Superpower to hit Rock-types as well as STAB Dark-type attacks to hit Misdreavus, a huge problem for Swellow. Calm Mind Serperior also defeats most of Swellow's counters and appreciates the weakening of Special Walls. Ground-types such as Golem and Golurk work great since they can hit Rock-types super effectively and beat Electric-types, many of which carry a Choice Scarf and can OHKO Swellow. Magnet Pull Probopass also works exceptionally well with Swellow (unnecessary, besides that you're saying "Swellow" too much), as it can trap and defeat opposing Probopass, Klang, and Bastiodon, as well as provide Stealth Rock for Swellow, . (period instead of a comma) it It is worth noting that running Armaldo a long along (it's one word) with Probopass is not recommended (give a reason why, such as adding too many similar weaknesses), so a different way to keep hazards off the field will need to be found.

[Other Options]

Realistically, you shouldn't be using anything that isn't a part of the main set. However, if you are not a gutsy user (LOLOLOLOLOLOL I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE) then a set that uses Scrappy a long along with Choice Band is viable to hit Ghost-types. The lack of a boosted Facade is noticeable somewhat disheartening, (unnecessary comma) as Swellow must rely on the much weaker Return as a Normal-type STAB. Endeavor is somewhat usable, but with Toxic Orb recoil it will be difficult to time it right, as ; waiting too (misspelling) long will mean the demise of Swellow. Pursuit is among the more viable options, as hitting a Haunter as it tries to escape can bring great joy, . however However, it is very difficult to fit onto the main set as all the standard moves are quite necessary. (that probably wasn't an important change, but it looks better to me. Do with it what you want.) Substitute and Roost are also usable, as they allow Swellow to scout or heal HP back. A SubRoost set would allow Swellow to scout and maintain its health. (I'm assuming that's what you meant, as running Substitute on the main set would cut Swellow's short lifespan even shorter) In fact, Roost is a handy move as Swellow is always on a timer, and with Flame Orb (I thought Toxic Orb was the main item. Does Roost just work better with Flame Orb?) can be used to recover HP in a pinch.</p.

[Checks and Counters]

Due to Swellow's lack of any real coverage options anything that resists its STAB combination is a counter. It definitely took me longer to go through this than I thought it would, lol! Hope these changes made sense and were beneficial. Let's keep this shit going so we can have NU up to date.)

No OO mention of CB Guts? If you switch into Toxic you can absolutely demolish stuff with Facade, and Brave Bird is cool when you're not statused. Could be great in combination with something like Sawk that Misdreavus can Burn easily. Sleep Talk is also a good option for this set, as it allows Swellow to switch into Amoonguss's Spore and cause it to faint from embarassment.

Also, Swellow deserves more QC checks than Gorebyss.

QC APPROVED 7/3

I actually do have one suggestion. You might want to add Substitute into OO, just to protect against priority and faster Pokemon. However, also mention that it lowers Swellow's lifespan by a lot, so ask people to think hard before using it.

Once that change is applied (and since Chaotica and Yonko got away with it)......

QC Approved 9/3

Can't copy the stamp, unfortunately. Oh well.

Swellow is an excellent answer to the aforementioned threats, revenge killing all of them (Scarf Cinccino and Scarf Braviary would probably beg to differ on that point a little bit, but I suppose those aren't that common or are decreasing in commonness in Braviary's case (also I didn't run the calc on Quick Attack vs. Cinccino); I also don't remember the damage output between Zangoose and Swellow's Quick Attacks against each other, but that might be relevant here). Everything is not great for this swell bird though, as it has little coverage to speak of and is always on a timer due to Toxic Orb;/., which when/When (depending on whether you want to start a new sentence or not) combined with its Stealth Rock weakness, these drawbacks can make makes it difficult to take advantage of Swellow's strengths.

This is the only set that Swellow should ever run, as it takes advantage of all of Swellow's perks at once. Guts turns Swellow into an offensive powerhouse, steamrolling through everything in its path. Facade is truly monstrous, (remove comma) and is the move that you will use most of the time, as it reaches a remarkable 210 Base Power after STAB, OHKOing threats such as Cinccino, Fraxure and Gardevoir outright. Brave Bird should be used sparingly due to the heavy amounts of recoil, but is a necessity to KO Pokemon that are weak to Flying-type attacks such as Serperior, Amoonguss, and Gurdurr. The choice between Quick Attack and Protect is a tough one; Quick Attack is generally preferred since priority will be more useful throughout the entire match, whilst Protect is primarily used as a way to activate Toxic Orb for free. Quick Attack can also be used to dodge Sucker Punches from Pokemon such as Absol (I'd add this modifier because there are other Sucker Punchers in the tier, such as Skuntank), allowing you to win 1v1 with proper prediction.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Maximum attack and speed EV investment is standard for physical sweepers, while a Jolly nature is used to make sure you outspeed threats such as Zebstrika and Cinccino (that aren't running Choice Scarf, of course).
Swellow needs Stealth Rock off of the field in order to function to its full potential, because of this so running a Pokemon with Rapid Spin is a necessity. Armaldo is without a doubt the best possible partner for Swellow, as it removes opposing Rock-types for Swellow while also keeping Stealth Rock off of the field. If for some reason Armaldo is not an option, packing a Pokemon that can prohibit Stealth Rock from being used in the first place, whether it be Mold Breaker Pokemon such as Rampardos or multi-hitting Pokemon that can OHKO through Sturdy such as Marowak or Torterra (Did you mean Cinccino maybe? Torterra doesn't have any multihit moves that I know of). All three work very well with Swellow, OHKOing many Rock-type leads such as Golem, the most popular user of Stealth Rock in the tier (maybe not anymore, with Golurk, Miltank, and Armaldo ahead of it, though I will readily admit these three don't always use Stealth Rock), while providing their own entry hazards. Swellow also appreciates Spikes support, as it forces many switches and can take advantage of them as Facade gets even more KOes with a little residual damage. Zangoose makes a great sweeping partner for Swellow, as it can remove Rock-types from the match with ease yet struggles with fast Pokemon such as Cinccino, which Swellow swiftly OHKOes. Ludicolo also works wonders with Swellow, as it decimates nearly every possible Swellow check with its powerful STAB Hydro Pumps. In reality, anything of the many common Pokemon that can defeat the ever common Rock-types will work great with Swellow, and many common Pokemon are capable of doing just that (I feel like this tightens the sentence). Sawk has its devastating Close Combat, while Mantine, Samurott, and Simipour have a useful Water-type STAB. Sawsbuck also works well with Swellow since it can defeat Rock-types with Horn Leech as well as and use Alomomola as set up bait (as well as means 'in addition to' in this context, so you could say 'as well as using Alomomola...' but I don't think that flows as well), allowing it to sweep in a pinch. Gurdurr also appreciates Swellow support since it struggles against powerful Special Attackers, many of which Swellow can easily handle. Magnet Pull Probopass also works exceptionally well, as it can trap and defeat opposing Probopass, Klang, and Bastiodon, as well as provide while also providing Stealth Rock for Swellow (just as above, as well as in this context means 'in addition to' so you could say 'as well as providing' if you want to).

The lack of a boosted Facade is somewhat disheartening as Swellow must rely on the much weaker Return as a Normal-type STAB. Endeavor is somewhat usable, but with Toxic Orb recoil it will be difficult to time it right; waiting too long will mean the demise of Swellow (in my view this seems like stating the obvious, but feel free to disagree). If you want to potentially 4HKO Regirock with a super effective move you can use Steel Wing, which hits Rock-types harder than any other move Swellow has, though it still does laughable damage to most of them. Pursuit is among the more viable options, as hitting a Haunter as it tries to escape can bring great joy, however, it is very difficult to fit onto the main set as the standard moves are quite necessary. A SubRoost set would allow Swellow to scout and maintain its health. In fact, Roost is a handy move as Swellow is always on a timer, and with Flame Orb can be used to recover HP in a pinch.

(I'm not sure this is exciting enough to merit an exclamation point) It is one of the best answers to Swellow that an offensive team can ask for, as Swellow makes a Klang user very happy. Alomomola can take on Swellow due to its sheer bulk, using Wish and Protect to rack up Toxic Orb damage on Swellow. Misdreavus cannot do anything back to Swellow, but can force it to kill itself with a combination of Stealth Rock, Brave Bird, and Toxic Orb damage. Nearly all of the common Choice Scarf Pokemon in NU are capable of revenge killing Swellow. The most common Choice Scarf Pokemon, Electric-types, are also able to hit Swellow super effectively (I might remove this sentence, since all it really says is that Electric is super effective against Flying). Rotom-S, Electabuzz, and Zebstrika can all KO with Volt Switch or Thunderbolt, while other Choice Scarf Pokemon such as Braviary can OHKO with Brave Bird, (this should be the beginning of a new sentence in my opinion since you are switching from the topic of scarfers to the topic of normal immunes) Ghost-types such as Golurk and Drifblim can force Swellow to use Brave Bird, meaning that Swellow will practically kill itself in order to combat them due to Brave Bird's recoil being based on the damage to their enormous HP stats. Piloswine is a great switch in as it can tank a hit and OHKO with Ice Shard! (I'm not sure Ice Shard is really that exciting) Most importantly, one of the easiest ways to defeat Swellow is to keep Stealth Rock on the field. Between that, Toxic Orb damage, and Brave Bird recoil Swellow's wings will definitely swiftly be clipped.

It has an enormous influence on the metagame, as any team without one of Swellow's counters will be destroyed. However, despite being so defining, it has not been as common as of late due to the rise of other powerful Normal-types such as Zangoose, Braviary, and Cinccino. The usage of other Normal- and Flying-types have made Swellow anti-meta, that is, a Pokemon that functions very well in the tier without being as popular as it should be. Swellow is an excellent answer to the aforementioned threats, revenge killing all of them. Everything is not great for this swell bird though, as it has little coverage to speak of and is always on a timer due to Toxic Orb; when combined with its Stealth Rock weakness make it difficult to take advantage of Swellow's strengths.

move 3: U-turn
move 4: Quick Attack / Protect

ability: Guts
nature: Jolly

[SET COMMENTS]

This is the only set that Swellow should ever run, as it takes advantage of all of Swellow's perks at once. Guts turns Swellow into an offensive powerhouse, steamrolling through everything in its path. Facade is truly monstrous and is the move that you will use most of the time, as it reaches a remarkable 210 Base Power after STAB, OHKOing threats such as Cinccino, Fraxure and Gardevoir outright. Brave Bird should be used sparingly due to the heavy amounts of recoil, but is a necessity to KO Pokemon that are weak to Flying-type attacks such as Serperior, Amoonguss, and Gurdurr. U-turn is a handy move to have, as it allows you to weaken the opposition with light blows and hopefully entry hazards until they are weak enough for Swellow to defeat them with Facade. The choice between Quick Attack and Protect is a tough one; Quick Attack is generally preferred since as priority will be more useful throughout the entire match, whilst Protect is primarily used as a way to activate Toxic Orb for free. Quick Attack can also be used to dodge Sucker Punches from Pokemon such as Absol, allowing you to win 1v1 with proper prediction.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Maximum aAttack and sSpeed EV investment is standard for physical sweepers, while a Jolly nature is used to make sure you outspeed threats such as Zebstrika and Cinccino (that aren't running Choice Scarf, of course). Adamant should never seriously be considered, as the drop in Speed is not worth the increase in strength. A Flame Orb is also an option if Swellow is going to stay in for more than a few turns, but Swellow is a hit and run Pokemon and generally won't stay in the battle for very long.

Swellow needs Stealth Rock off the field in order to function to its full potential, so running a Pokemon with Rapid Spin is a necessity. Armaldo is without a doubt the best possible partner for Swellow, as it removes opposing Rock-types for Swellow while also keeping Stealth Rock off the field. If for some reason Armaldo is not an option, packing a Pokemon that can prohibit Stealth Rock from being used in the first place, whether it be Mold Breaker Pokemon such as Rampardos or multi-hitting Pokemon that can OHKO through Sturdy such as Marowak or Torterra. All three work very well with Swellow, OHKOing many Rock-type leads such as Golem, one of the most popular user of Stealth Rock in the tier, while providing their own entry hazards. Swellow also appreciates Spikes support, as it forces many switches and can take advantage of them as Facade gets even more KOes with a little residual damage. Zangoose makes a great sweeping partner for Swellow, as it can remove Rock-types from the match with ease, (comma) yet struggles with fast Pokemon such as Cinccino, which Swellow swiftly OHKOes. Ludicolo also works wonders with Swellow, as it decimates nearly every possible Swellow check with its powerful STAB Hydro Pumps. In reality, any of the many common Pokemon that can defeat the ever common Rock-types will work great with Swellow. Sawk has its devastating Close Combat, while Mantine, Samurott, and Simipour have a useful Water-type STAB. Sawsbuck also works well with Swellow since , as it can defeat Rock-types with Horn Leech and use Alomomola as set up bait, allowing it to sweep in a pinch. Gurdurr also appreciates Swellow support since , as it struggles against powerful Special Attackers, many of which Swellow can easily handle. In return Gurdurr has a powerful Fighting-type STAB to defeat most of Swellow's common counters. Absol works well since , as it has a powerful Superpower to hit Rock-types as well as STAB Dark-type attacks to hit Misdreavus, a huge problem for Swellow. Calm Mind Serperior also defeats most of Swellow's counters and appreciates the weakening of Special Walls. Ground-types such as Golem and Golurk work great since , as they can hit Rock-types super effectively and beat Electric-types, many of which carry a Choice Scarf and can OHKO Swellow.

The lack of a boosted Facade is somewhat disheartening, (comma) as Swellow must rely on the much weaker Return as a Normal-type STAB. Endeavor is somewhat usable, but with Toxic Orb recoil it will be difficult to time it right; waiting too long will mean the demise of Swellow. If you want to potentially 4HKO Regirock with a super effective move you can use Steel Wing, which hits Rock-types harder than any other move Swellow has, though it still does laughable damage to most of them. Pursuit is among the more viable options, as hitting a Haunter as it tries to escape can bring great joy, however, it is very difficult to fit onto the main set, (comma) as the standard moves are quite necessary. A SubRoost set would allow Swellow to scout and maintain its health. In fact, Roost is a handy move as Swellow is always on a timer, and with Flame Orb can be used to recover HP in a pinch.

[Checks and Counters]

Due to Swellow's lack of any real coverage options, (comma) anything that resists its STAB combination is a counter. Klang is a great answer to Swellow, as it resists every move it can viably use and can set up on it with Shift Gear. It is one of the best answers to Swellow that an offensive team can ask for, as Swellow makes a Klang user very happy. Alomomola can take on Swellow due to its sheer bulk, using Wish and Protect to rack up Toxic Orb damage on Swellow. Zangoose makes a great sweeping partner for Swellow, as it can remove Rock-types from the match with ease, yet struggles with fast Pokemon such aslike Cinccino, which Swellow swiftly OHKOes. Sawsbuck also works well with Swellow as it can defeat Rock-types with Horn Leech and use Alomomola as set up bait, allowing it to sweep in a pinch. Calm Mind Serperior also defeats most of Swellow's counters and appreciates the weakening of specially defensiveed special walls.

Klang is a great answer to Swellow, as it resists every move it can viably use and can set up on it with Shift Gear. It is one of the best answers to Swellow that an offensive team can ask for, as Swellow makes a Klang user very happy. Alomomola can take on Swellow duethanks to its sheer bulk, using Wish and Protect to rack up Toxic Orb damage on Swellow.
