Congratulations to our four winners and thanks to everyone who made a submission, you all did an amazing work.

Let’s move on to a new Victim of the Week. For this week we will be featuring the Grass Guardian of Alola: Tapu Bulu.

tapubulu.gif

Tapu Bulu @ Life Orb
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 32 HP / 252 Atk / 224 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Horn Leech
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge

If it was left aside at first and considered to be a bad version of Rillaboom, Tapu Bulu found its niche in OU. It doesn’t have the deadly Grassy Glide + Grassy Terrain combo, but still has some advantages over Rillaboom. Being able to threaten Flying types with Stone Edge while easily healing itself with Horn Leech makes Tapu Bulu way more threatening against bulky teams. Its defensive typing also brings more utility than Rillaboom’s one, allowing it to act as an Urshifu-R, Zeraora and Landorus-T check. With Swords Dance, this thing becomes a deadly breaker able to bruteforce through a lot of walls and open a path for one of its offensive teammates like Kartana. Have fun finding checks and counters to this powerful guardian!

Submission phase will end on next Friday, good luck!

:SM/Buzzwole:
Buzzwole @ Leftovers/Rocky Helmet
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 144 Def / 112 Spe
Impish Nature
- Drain Punch
- Ice Punch
- Roost
- Toxic
Resists all of bulu's moves and can threaten it with ice punch can also stay healthy with roost. So i submit buzzwole as a counter
Here are the calcs:0 Atk Buzzwole Ice Punch vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu: 128-152 (37.3 - 44.3%) -- 26.2% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery and Grassy Terrain recovery
252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Horn Leech vs. 252 HP / 144+ Def Buzzwole in Grassy Terrain: 54-64 (12.9 - 15.3%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 144+ Def Buzzwole: 44-52 (10.5 - 12.4%) -- possibly the worst move ever

Reserving Amoonguss

:bw/(Amoonguss):
Amoonguss @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA / 12 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Spore
- Foul Play
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb / Clear Smog

Amoonguss stands as a solid Counter to Bulu, as it takes nothing from Horn Leech or Close Combat, and eats a +2 Stone Edge quite well to retaliate with an easy Sludge Bomb KO. Regenerator ensures that the sus mushroom isn't chipped into SE range beforehand, and you can abuse Bulu's switch to land a Spore on whatever comes in afterwards.
(Shoutout to SLDR for the EV spread by the way)

Tangrowth @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Giga Drain
- Knock Off
- Focus Blast
- Sleep Powder/Stun Spore/Sludge Bomb
Submitting tangrowth as a defensive check to Tapu bulu. Tangrowth can come in on Tapu bulu as it sds and punish it’s attacks from it’s rocky helmet. Tangrowth can also knock off Tapu bulu’s life orb which can result in a major power decrease in it’s attacks. Tangrowth also has the option to go with a 4 attacks set using sludge bomb which can beat bulu 1v1 but it doesn’t need sludge bomb to still switch in on bulu and act as a check to it.

252+ Atk Life Orb Tapu Bulu Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 116-136 (28.7 - 33.6%) -- 97.6% chance to 4HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery(unboosted calc with life orb)
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Tapu Bulu Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 230-272 (56.9 - 67.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery(boosted calc with life orb)
+2 252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 177-209 (43.8 - 51.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery(No life orb boosted calc when or if tang grabs a knock off)
252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 89-105 (22 - 25.9%) -- possible 5HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery(un boosted calc without life orb)
0 SpA Tangrowth Sludge Bomb vs. 32 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Bulu: 292-348 (101 - 120.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO(sludge bomb calc)

Aegislash
:ss/aegislash:
Aegislash @ Leftovers
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def/ 8 SpAtk
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Toxic
- King's Shield
- Shadow Ball

1. Aegislash vs Bulu

  • Resists all possible Bulu attacks (Close combat, horn leech, wood hammer, stone edge)
  • Very high defense
  • Grassy terrain helps Aegislash heal vs Bulu
  • Bulu can get toxiced by aegislash or take a ton of damage from a steel type move
  • Aegislash forces Bulu out most of the time
  • Kings sheild allows for even more recovery with leftovers + grassy terrain and it can lower Bulu’s attack if it tries to hit it.
  • All sets switch into Tapu Bulu.
  • Viable VR option (B tier, nommed to B+ a couple of times)
  • It can take advantage of the switch with an example being something like a specs shadow ball.
Conclusion: :Tapu Bulu: has a very hard time getting past :Aegislash:. It can take full advantage since it simply comes in, and grassy terrain heals Aegislash from any chip making it even worse to deal with.

2. Check or counter?

IT IS A COUNTER. Bulu comes absolutely obsolete when there’s an Aegislash and it really destroys all Bulu teams.

Slowking-Galar @ Assault Vest

Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 12 Def / 124 SpA / 120 SpD

Calm Nature
- Future Sight

- Sludge Bomb
- Ice Beam
- Flamethrower

Galarian Slowking is a solid check to Tapu Bulu, as it can pivot into Close Combat and Horn Leech. It has to be careful of directly switching into Stone Edge or taking a boosted Horn Leech, but it can pivot out to regain its health with Regenerator. Sludge Bomb is able to obviously OHKO or it is able to set up a Future Sight on a predicted switch.

120 SpA Slowking-Galar Sludge Bomb vs. 32 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Bulu: 492-580 (170.2 - 200.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 12 Def Slowking-Galar: 185-218 (46.9 - 55.3%) -- 16.8% chance to 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 12 Def Slowking-Galar: 368-434 (93.4 - 110.1%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Tapu Bulu Horn Leech vs. 252 HP / 12 Def Slowking-Galar in Grassy Terrain: 269-318 (68.2 - 80.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

Zapdos-Galar is an offensive check to Tapu Bulu. It outspeeds 'bulu and OHKOs with Brave Bird. Fortunately, Tapu Bulu does not have any physical fairy STAB to whack 'Dos with. Therefore, a healthy Zapdos-Galar can switch in, only taking significant damage from an unboosted, unSTABed Stone Edge. Any Zapdos-G set works, so I've listed the Choice sets.

252+ Atk Life Orb Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zapdos-Galar: 170-201 (52.9 - 62.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Galarian weezing while a niche pokemon is one of the best checks to tapu bulu, resisting Horn Leech and Close Combat while not being afraid of a +2 Stone Edge thanks to its high defense, while burning it with Will-O-Wisp, and staying healthy with pain split, taunt allows it to be annoying for bulkier teams to switch around it, here are some calcs to back it up:

+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Weezing-Galar: 198-233 (59.2 - 69.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery and Grassy Terrain recovery

+2 252+ Atk Life Orb burned Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Weezing-Galar: 99-116 (29.6 - 34.7%) -- 0.5% chance to 4HKO after Black Sludge recovery and Grassy Terrain recovery

0 SpA Weezing-Galar Dazzling Gleam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Tapu Bulu: 78-93 (27.7 - 33%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery and burn damage

This set takes survives Tapu Bulu's attacks without compromising its offensive presence. It outspeeds the given 'Bulu set as well. It is very straightforward as most Nidoking are. Submitting it as a check.

252+ Atk Life Orb Tapu Bulu Horn Leech vs. 76 HP / 32 Def Nidoking in Grassy Terrain: 273-321 (84.7 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

Tornadus-T serves as a check against Tapu Bulu while you can reliably switch into every move from Tapu Bulu's arsenal you must watchout from Stone Edge which can easily remove Tornadus-T. Tornadus-T can switch into Horn Leech and Close Combat and can force it out while gambling to hit Hurricane with the risk of Stone Edge also hitting, alternatively you can cripple Tapu Bulu with Toxic placing it on a timer making it get worn down constantly. While forcing out Tapu Bulu it can remove hazards with Defog which also removes Grassy Terrain, and if the case hazards aren't up you can decide to remove terrains on teammates the benefit from it that could check Tornadus-T, give yourself momentum with U-Turn, or harass the opposing side with Knock Off or Toxic making it annoying to switch into.

Volcarona @ Heavy-Duty Boots

Ability: Flame Body

Timid Nature

IVs: 0 Atk

:volcarona: CHECK

stone edge is a death sentence for volcarona so it's by no means a counter, but its sheer presence gives headache to the bulu user who must be careful around its flame body shenaniganry. basically, volcarona creates a 50/50 where bulu either clicks stone edge or is always forced out, with a 30% chance to be crippled if it chose the wrong attack. it clicks sd, horn leech or cc and bulu has to switch and, for the latter two, pray not to get burnt. it clicks stone edge, bulu has to pray it lands. the fact that bulu will never sweep your team AND has to be careful about what it does makes bulkarona a very decent check to it and, by virtue of its bulk, typing and longevity, also to grassmag in general.

the insanity that is this ev spread allows many things. I won't make a wall of calcs here but I'll explain the only thing relevant for tapu bulu, which is the 56 SpA.
56 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 24 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Bulu: 276-326 (96.1 - 113.5%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
This means that Volcarona can ohko tapu bulu after a round of life orb + grassy terrain (i.e. after it killed something or after you switched in on a resisted move) and by extension after stealth rock + grassy terrain. the evs needed to always ohko bulu from full are a whopping 104 but that's too much for my taste. If you want to feel extra safe, go ahead.

:ss/Kartana:
Kartana @ Choice Band
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Leaf Blade
- Smart Strike
- Knock Off
- Sacred Sword

Kartana is a check. Switching in on Close Combat is obviously a death sentence, but Kartana can switch in on Bulu's other attacks just fine, even if it's at +2. From there, Kartana can 1HKO it with Smart Strike. Kartana can also attempt to knock off Bulu's Life Orb, but this can easily result in an unnecessary sack.

:kartana:
252 Atk Choice Band Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 32 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu in Grassy Terrain: 163-192 (56.4 - 66.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

252 Atk Choice Band Kartana Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 32 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu: 90-106 (31.1 - 36.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
252 Atk Choice Band Kartana Knock Off vs. 32 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu: 60-71 (20.7 - 24.5%) -- possible 6HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

This set of zapdos allows you to tank a stone edge at +2 from a tapu bulu and kill it in return with hurricane. The speed allows to overtake it.
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Tapu Bulu Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 232+ Def Charti Berry Zapdos: 253-299 (66 - 78%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

It is therefore a check.

Victini can come in on a +2 Horn Leech or Close Combat and live, and has a chance to survive an un boosted Stone Edge. It can then just OHKO with V-Create, or U-Turn on a predicted switch. Therefore, Victini is a Check to Tapu Bulu.

I am submitting this as a check to offensive bulu and is a excellent revenge killer of Bulu and it can even switch if you predict the close combat or horn leech but of course it does fear stone edge.
