Moves

Swords Dance boosts Combusken's Attack by two stages, allowing it to plow through walls such as Weezing and Regirock and clean late-game with its near-unresisted STAB combination. Flare Blitz is Combusken's strongest STAB move, dealing significant damage to targets like Spiritomb and Clefairy. Sky Uppercut targets those that resist Flare Blitz such as Regirock and Omastar, enabling Combusken to OHKO both with a Swords Dance-boosted All-Out Pummeling. Low Kick is a more consistent option thanks to its perfect accuracy and can deal much more damage to targets such as Aggron, Regirock, and Mudsdale. This allows Combusken to break through these Pokemon after a Swords Dance boost and slight residual damage beforehand. Do note, however, that it is less consistent against lightweight Pokemon like Omastar and Lanturn without Fightinium Z. Using Protect allows Combusken to safely get an extra turn of Speed Boost while also scouting for moves and Choice-locked Pokemon like Primeape and burning turns of Trick Room and weather. Thunder Punch can be utilized to target Qwilfish and Swanna, which otherwise have an easy time switching in. This gives up Protect's ability to outspeed foes in a pinch but can be used to lure in and KO two of Combusken's best checks. Substitute can be used in place of Protect to provide Combusken with a shield from status moves while easing prediction. However, a lack of Protect means that Combusken struggles when directly facing faster Pokemon like Kangaskhan and Pinsir, which can OHKO Combusken if it's lacking Eviolite. Fire Punch is a safer Fire-type STAB option over Flare Blitz that has no recoil, which allows it to be used multiple times without wearing down Combusken. Unfortunately, the drawback in power is highly significant, leaving Combusken unable to OHKO physically bulky Pokemon such as Weezing with a Swords Dance-boosted Inferno Overdrive.

Set Details
========

Maximum Attack and Speed investment allows Combusken to hit as hard and as quickly as possible. Using a Jolly nature allows Combusken to outspeed the likes of Jynx, Scyther, and Haunter after a Speed boost, whereas an Adamant nature can be used instead to increase Combusken's firepower and secure important KOs. This is especially significant on Firium Z variants, as this ensures that a Swords Dance-boosted Inferno Overdrive always OHKOes Weezing and defensive Mesprit. Speed Boost allows Combusken to thrive against offensive teams that have a difficult time taking on boosted attacks and are often outsped due to the snowballing effect that Speed Boosts creates. Firium Z converts Flare Blitz into Inferno Overdrive, an insanely powerful nuke when boosted with Swords Dance. Inferno Overdrive can also comfortably OHKO Skuntank and Oricorio-E after Stealth Rock damage without any Swords Dance boosts. This additionally lacks Flare Blitz's high recoil. Alternatively, Fightinium Z turns Sky Uppercut and Low Kick into All-Out Pummeling, doing significant damage to Pokemon that resist Flare Blitz like Lanturn and Carracosta. Combusken can trade off a Z-Crystal for an Eviolite, which enhances its bulk and eases the tension of setting up while also allowing Combusken to stomach priority moves that are weaker against it like Sucker Punch and Mach Punch.

Usage Tips
========

Combusken excels the most late-game due to its decent power and speed after Swords Dance and Speed Boost. However, it can be effective both as an early-game wallbreaker and as a revenge killer, utilizing Protect to gain a free Speed Boost and using its potent STAB moves to punch through walls. Protect can also provide utility, being able to burn turns of Trick Room and weather or scout for Choice-locked Pokemon such as Scyther. Combusken can be used earlier on against frailer offensive teams, which struggle to take boosted hits. It performs well later in a match versus bulky teams, where Combusken can power through teams where checks like Altaria are weakened. Being relatively frail, especially when lacking Eviolite, means that Combusken should only be brought in through pivoting moves like Volt Switch and U-turn, moves that heal it such as Healing Wish and Z-Parting Shot, into weak resisted attacks like Froslass's Ice Beam, or into moves that have no effect whatsoever, such as Gourgeist-XL's Will-O-Wisp. Double switching can also grant Combusken favorable matchups against threats like Bellossom and Shiftry, giving it a valuable chance to use Swords Dance. Use Swords Dance for when physically bulky threats such as Audino and Clefairy are still relatively healthy, as this grants Combusken the ability to KO them through their high Defense. Combusken can much more easily break through the likes of Weezing, Mesprit, and Lanturn when using the Z-Crystal respective to the Pokemon Combusken intends to break through. Combusken can use opportune matchups as setup time, as the prospect of its powerful STAB moves often forces switches. Examples of Pokemon that can't do much to Combusken include Audino, Gourgeist-XL, and Clefairy lacking Thunder Wave, though the Pokemon listed can potentially carry Toxic, which limits the number of turns Combusken can sweep. It's often a good idea to not reveal Swords Dance until absolutely necessary, as this can be used to bait in specially bulky Pokemon like Hitmonchan and Eelektross to take a hit, expecting a specially offensive set. If lacking the appropriate coverage, have Pokemon such as Qwilfish and Altaria weakened or removed before attempting to sweep, as this facilitates Combusken's ability to set up with Swords Dance and utilize Speed Boost.

Team Options
========

Grass- and Electric-types like Lilligant, Abomasnow, and Manectric can threaten bulky Ground- and Water-types like Mudsdale and Pyukumuku with their respective super effective STAB moves. The likes of Togedemaru, Eelektross, and Rotom-F can additionally provide momentum for Combusken with U-turn or Volt Switch. Wallbreakers such as Drampa, Mesprit, and Aggron can severely weaken bulky threats, which Combusken greatly enjoys in order to secure KOs. In return, Combusken can combat the Ice-, Dark- and Grass-types that threaten these Pokemon, like Alolan Sandslash, Absol, and Lurantis. Slower pivots such as Type: Null and Eelektross can bring Combusken in safely, with the latter being able to switch into Ground-type attacks directed at Combusken. Other defensive pivots like Silvally-Water and Lanturn can lure in Grass-types such as Bellossom and Lurantis. If using Eviolite variants of Combusken, Z-Parting Shot and Z-Memento from Alolan Persian and Skuntank can be used to lower the foe's offensive stats and fully heal Combusken, enabling easier setup. Entry hazard support from the likes of Regirock, Qwilfish, and Froslass can aid Combusken by whittling at its checks. Mesprit and Clefairy provide additional support through Healing Wish, giving Combusken a second chance at sweeping if it is used earlier in a match. Inversely, Pokemon that can remove entry hazards such as Hitmonchan and Swanna can keep entry hazards off Combusken's side, increasing the number of times it can use Flare Blitz and easing the tension of setup. Silvally-Dragon can additionally generate momentum with Parting Shot and bait in specially defensive Pokemon like Audino and Probopass. Additionally, these Pokemon naturally threaten Psychic-types such as Mesprit and Musharna. Defensive walls such as Gourgeist-XL and Weezing can sponge priority moves directed at Combusken like Aqua Jet and Mach Punch. Weezing can also set up Toxic Spikes to inflict residual damage on bulky Pokemon. Both of these examples can burn users of such priority moves like Kabutops and Hitmonchan with Will-O-Wisp.

  • Swords Dance boosts Combusken's Attack by two stages, allowing it to plow through walls and clean late-game with its near-unresisted STAB combination.
  • Flare Blitz is Combusken's strongest STAB move, dealing significant damage to targets that don't resist it. Note that this deals high recoil outside of Inferno Overdrive, however.
  • Sky Uppercut targets those that resist Flare Blitz such as Lanturn and Drampa, capable of OHKOing both with a Swords Dance boosted All-Out Pummeling. (mention regirock and omastar here.)
  • Using Protect allows Combusken to safely get an extra turn of Speed Boost, while also scouting for moves.
  • Low Kick is more consistent option thanks to its perfect accuracy, but dealing less damage outside of All-Out Pummeling versus targets like Lanturn and Carracosta makes this a less reliable option most of the time. (explain that the move deals more damage to heavier foes like non-chople berry aggron, regirock, and mudsdale, meaning that you don't need to be at +2 or use your z-move against the former and that you have a pretty high chance to break through the latter two at +2 if they get chipped just a little bit, which is more than likely going to be the case if you consider hazards + them being relied on to switch into other pokemon.)
  • Thunder Punch can be used to target Qwilfish and Swanna, which otherwise have an easy time switching in. However, this trades off Protect's ability to outspeed foes in a pinch.
  • Mention Substitute, Fire Punch, and Rock Slide here.

  • Maximum Attack and Speed investment allows Combusken to hit as hard and as quickly as possible.
  • Using a Jolly nature allows Combusken to outspeed Pokemon that Adamant sets can't after a Speed boost, such as Jynx, Scyther, and Swanna. (specify that it's non-scarf scyther bc that set is relatively common.)
  • An Adamant nature can be used instead to increase Combusken's firepower and secure important KOs; for instance, this ensures that a Swords Dance boosted Inferno Overdrive always OHKOs Weezing and Defensive Mesprit.
  • Speed Boost is mandatory on Combusken as to boost its Speed by one stage at the end of every turn in which it's active. This allows Combusken to thrive against offensive teams, which have a difficult time taking on boosted attacks.
  • Firium Z converts Flare Blitz into Inferno Overdrive, an insanely powerful nuke when boosted with Swords Dance, dealing heavy damage to the majority of neutral targets. This additionally negates Flare Blitz's high self-recoil.
  • Using Fightinium Z turns Sky Uppercut and Low Kick into All-Out Pummeling, doing significant damage to Pokemon that resist Flare Blitz like Lanturn, Carracosta, and Kingler.
Usage Tips
========
  • Combusken excels the most late-game due to its sheer power and high speed after boosts. However, it can be effective both early-game as a wallbreaker and as a revenge killer, utilizing Protect to gain a free Speed Boost and using its potent STAB moves to punch through walls.
  • Being very frail means that Combusken should only be brought in through pivoting moves like Volt Switch and U-Turn, into weak resisted attacks, or into moves that have no effect whatsoever, such as Spiritomb's Will-O-Wisp. (put something here about getting combusken in against pokemon like non-choice scarf aurorus through double switches, as this gives it the perfect chance to use swords dance.)
  • Combusken can use opportune matchups as setup time, as the prospect of its powerful STAB moves often forces switches. Examples of Pokemon that can't do much to Combusken include Audino, Clefairy, and Gourgeist-XL. (needs to watch out for toxic against the former two.)
  • Having checks to Combusken such as Qwilfish and Altaria weakened or removed facilities (facilitates.) Combusken's ability to sweep with Swords Dance and Speed Boost, as there's little else in the way of resisting its powerful attacks.
  • When exactly should Combusken aim to use Swords Dance?
  • I kind of want to see a point about how you shouldn't immediately reveal if it's Swords Dance, as this allows you to exploit certain switch-ins like Hitmonchan that expect it to be specially offensive.
Team Options
========
  • Grass- and Electric-types like Alolan Exeggutor, Abomasnow, and Manectric threaten bulky Water- and Ground-types like Mudsdale and Pyukumuku with their respective super-effective STAB moves. The likes of Togedemaru, Alolan Raichu (doesn't commonly run volt switch and shouldn't be put over the other two.) and Eelektross can additionally form a VoltTurn core in order to provide momentum for Combusken.
  • Slower pivots such as Lanturn and Defensive Mesprit can bring Combusken in safely and also stomach powerful Water- and Psychic- type attacks directed at Combusken. Other defensive pivots like Silvally-Water and Lanturn can lure in Grass-types such as Bellossom and Lurantis.
  • Entry hazard support from the likes of Regirock, Qwilfish, and Omastar can aid Combusken by whittling at its checks. Mesprit and Clefairy provide additional support through Healing Wish, giving Combusken a second chance at sweeping if it was used earlier in a match. (not sure how i feel about hw clefairy being mentioned, but leave it for now.)
  • Inversely, Pokemon that can remove entry hazards such as Hitmonchan and Kabutops can keep Stealth Rock off of Combusken's side, increasing the number of times it can use Flare Blitz and easing the tension of setup. (maybe mention silv-dragon here, offensive remover that also pivots and makes use of pshot to ease setup and bait in stuff that combusken can set up on like clefairy. if you do mention it, also say that the spinners come with the advantage of not removing any hazards that combusken's team sets.)
  • Defensive walls such as Gourgeist-XL and Weezing can sponge priority moves that threaten to hit Combusken first like Aqua Jet and Mach Punch. Both of these examples can additionally burn users of such moves like Qwilfish and Hitmonchan. (qwilfish can taunt both of these pokemon and render them useless.)
1/3, good work.

Moves
========
  • Swords Dance boosts Combusken's Attack by two stages, allowing it to plow through walls and clean late-game with its near-unresisted STAB combination. (walls like? what does it break that it doesn't at +0. helps it beat a lot of the more standard fire-type checks like regirock, lanturn, etc.)
  • Flare Blitz is Combusken's strongest STAB move, dealing significant damage to targets that don't resist it. Note that this deals high recoil outside of Inferno Overdrive, however. (remove the last part about recoil people should already know this. allows it to break what and what. examples are nice)
  • Sky Uppercut targets those that resist Flare Blitz such as Regirock and Omastar, capable of OHKOing both with a Swords Dance boosted All-Out Pummeling.
  • Low Kick is a more consistent option thanks to its perfect accuracy, and can deal much more damage to targets such as Aggron, Regirock, and Mudsdale. This allows Combusken to break through these Pokemon after a Swords Dance boost and slight residual damage beforehand. Do note, however, that this is a less consistent option against light-weight Pokemon like Omastar and Lanturn without All-Out Pummeling. (good)
  • Using Protect allows Combusken to safely get an extra turn of Speed Boost, while also scouting for moves. (especially useful for choice locked pokemon)
  • Thunder Punch can be used to target Qwilfish and Swanna, which otherwise have an easy time switching in, but this trades off Protect's ability to outspeed foes in a pinch. (i'd 100% slash this with protect)
  • Substitute can be used in place of Protect to provide Combusken with a shield from status moves while easing prediction. (however this means you cannot scout or get a free speed boost against a faster pokemon. this would then allow something like kangaskhan to kill you with double edge, if lacking eviolite)
  • Fire Punch is a safer STAB option that has no recoil, which allows it to be used multiple times without wearing down Combusken. Unfortunately, the drawback in power is highly significant. (weak z move too. can you provide pokemon that it cannot break that it usually does with flare blitz)
  • Lastly, Rock Slide can be utilized in order to do significant damage to both Altaria and Swanna, but this offers very minimal use elsewhere, and suffers similarly to Thunder Punch in terms of finding room for this move. (nope. rock slide SUCKS)

  • Using a Jolly nature allows Combusken to outspeed Pokemon that Adamant sets can't after a Speed boost, including Jynx, Scyther, and Swanna, provided none of these are using Choice Scarf. (you can however set up on jynx locked into ice beam)
  • An Adamant nature can be used instead to increase Combusken's firepower and secure important KOs; for instance, this ensures that a Swords Dance boosted Inferno Overdrive always OHKOs Weezing and Defensive Mesprit. (does this change what it can ohko with its fight z move? worth a check to be honest)
  • Speed Boost is mandatory on Combusken as to boost its Speed by one stage at the end of every turn in which it's active. This allows Combusken to thrive against offensive teams, which have a difficult time taking on boosted attacks. (this is how it snowballs teams late-game)
  • Combusken can trade off a Z-Crystal for an Eviolite, which enhances its bulk and eases the tension of setting up, while also allowing Combusken to stomach weaker priority moves like Sucker Punch. (mach too. i don't like sucker punch being called weak, gives off the wrong idea. it's a strong priority move that's only "weak" because you resist it. i'd clarify that)
  • Firium Z converts Flare Blitz into Inferno Overdrive, an insanely powerful nuke when boosted with Swords Dance, dealing heavy damage to the majority of neutral targets. This additionally negates Flare Blitz's high self-recoil. (mention if it nets any ohkos that flare blitz doesnt here, maybe different to previously mentioned examples)
  • Using Fightinium Z turns Sky Uppercut and Low Kick into All-Out Pummeling, doing significant damage to Pokemon that resist Flare Blitz like Lanturn, Carracosta, and Kingler.
Usage Tips
========
  • Combusken excels the most late-game due to its sheer power (nah it's actually pretty weak before a boost. gives off the wrong impression) and high speed after boosts. However, it can be effective both early-game as a wallbreaker and as a revenge killer, utilizing Protect to gain a free Speed Boost and using its potent STAB moves to punch through walls. (this depends on the archetype you are facing. against more offensive teams it'll see usage earlier on, but against bulkier teams you'd want to save it for later once specific walls have been weakened)
  • Being relatively frail (especially when using z move. eviolite has an okay amount of bulk though) means that Combusken should only be brought in through pivoting moves like Volt Switch and U-turn, into weak resisted attacks, or into moves that have no effect whatsoever, such as Spiritomb's Will-O-Wisp (can also be brought in by either healing wish or memento too!) (spiritomb is a super risky option because psychic + sucker punch will always kill you, so you lose the 1v1). Double switching can also grant Combusken favorable matchups against threats like Choice-locked Aurorus and Shiftry, giving Combusken a valuable chance to use Swords Dance. (has to play the 50/50 vs aurorus, as it doesn't want to take a choice specs blizzard, unless eviolite)
  • Use Swords Dance for when physically bulky threats such as Weezing, Mesprit, and Kingler are still relatively healthy, as this grants Combusken the ability to KO through their high Defense. (with the appropriate z move. you lose to mesprit without firium z and kingler without fight z)
  • Combusken can use opportune matchups as setup time, as the prospect of its powerful STAB moves often forces switches. Examples of Pokemon that can't do much to Combusken include Audino, Clefairy, and Gourgeist-XL, though the former two can carry Toxic which limits the number of turns Combusken can sweep. (hmm. clefairy is a rather sketchy one. thunder wave basically renders you borderline useless. i'd probably pick another pokemon)
  • It's often a good idea to not reveal Swords Dance until absolutely necessary, as this can be used to bait in specially bulky Pokemon like Hitmonchan and Eelektross to take a hit, expecting a specially offensive set.
  • Having checks to Combusken such as Qwilfish and Altaria weakened or removed facilitates Combusken's ability to sweep with Swords Dance and Speed Boost, as there's little else in the way of resisting its powerful attacks. (i'd just slightly rephrase to something along the lines of "if lacking coverage to said mons, they should either be severely weakened or koed before you attempt to set up with combusken)
  • protect can be used to scout shit and also burn stuff like weather and trick room turns

Team Options
========
  • Grass- and Electric-types like Alolan Exeggutor, Abomasnow, and Manectric threaten bulky Water- and Ground-types like Mudsdale and Pyukumuku with their respective super-effective STAB moves. The likes of Togedemaru, Eelektross, and Rotom-F can additionally form a VoltTurn core in order to provide momentum for Combusken. (combusken does..)
  • Slower pivots such as Lanturn and Defensive Mesprit can bring Combusken in safely and also stomach powerful Water- and Psychic-type attacks directed at Combusken (i mean, defensive mesprit borderline loses to most offensive psychic types). Other defensive pivots like Silvally-Water and Lanturn :blobglare: can lure in Grass-types such as Bellossom and Lurantis.
  • Entry hazard support from the likes of Regirock, Qwilfish, and Omastar (i wouldn't mention hazard setting omastar at the moment) can aid Combusken by whittling at its checks. Mesprit and Clefairy provide additional support through Healing Wish (healing wish clefairy :blobnom: we out here with 3018 tech), giving Combusken a second chance at sweeping if it was used earlier in a match. (mention (z) parting shot, memento, etc. if you're going to mention healing wish)
  • Inversely, Pokemon that can remove entry hazards such as Hitmonchan and Kabutops can keep Stealth Rock off of Combusken's side, increasing the number of times it can use Flare Blitz and easing the tension of setup. Silvally-Dragon can additionally generate momentum with Parting Shot and bait Steel- and Fairy-types like Aggron and Clefairy. (again clef is slightly shaky)
  • Defensive walls such as Gourgeist-XL and Weezing can sponge priority moves that threaten to hit Combusken first like Aqua Jet and Mach Punch. Both of these examples can burn users of such moves like Kabutops and Hitmonchan with Will-O-Wisp. (weezing provides toxic spikes support too)
  • mention wallbreakers that can soften teams for combusken. aggron is a good start
Aight. QC 2/3. Get this written up bud.

Grass- and Electric-types like Lilligant, Abomasnow, and Manectric threaten bulky Water- and Ground-types like Mudsdale and Pyukumuku with their respective super effective STAB moves.(Might wanna rephrase this, since Electric mons dont threaten Ground mons) The likes of Togedemaru, Eelektross, and Rotom-F can additionally form a VoltTurn(Don't mention volturn, since Combusken isn't part of that core. Just say that they can pivot into Combusken and whatnot.) core in order to provide momentum for Combusken. Wallbreakers such as Drampa, Mesprit, and Kingler can severely weaken bulky threats, which Combusken greatly enjoys in order to secure KOs. In return, Combusken can combat the Ice-, Dark- and Grass types that threaten these Pokemon, like Alolan Sandslash, Absol, and Lurantis. Mesprit and Clefairy provide additional support through Healing Wish, giving Combusken a second chance at sweeping if it was used earlier in a match. Z-Parting Shot and Z-Memento from Alolan Persian and Skuntank lowers the foe's offensive stats in addition to healing Combusken, allowing for easier setup. (Both also help with Psychic-types)(Also the downside being that uses up the Z move)Inversely, Pokemon that can remove entry hazards such as Hitmonchan and Swanna can keep Stealth Rock(Just say hazards) off of Combusken's side, increasing the number of times it can use Flare Blitz and easing the tension of setup. Silvally-Dragon can additionally generate momentum with Parting Shot and bait in specially defensive Pokemon like Audino and Probopass.
Looks good, QC 3/3! And Yogi said I was lazy, pfff.

Swords Dance boosts Combusken's Attack by two stages, allowing it to plow through walls such as Weezing and Regirock,(RC) and clean late-game with its near-unresisted STAB combination. Flare Blitz is Combusken's strongest STAB move, dealing significant damage to targets like Spiritomb and Clefairy. Sky Uppercut targets those that resist Flare Blitz such as Regirock and Omastar, capable of OHKOing both with a Swords Dance-boosted(AH) All-Out Pummeling. Low Kick is a more consistent option thanks to its perfect accuracy,(RC) and can deal much more damage to targets such as Aggron, Regirock, and Mudsdale. This allows Combusken to break through these Pokemon after a Swords Dance boost and slight residual damage beforehand. Do note, however, that this is a less consistent option against light-weight Pokemon like Omastar and Lanturn without All-Out Pummeling. Using Protect allows Combusken to safely get an extra turn of Speed Boost, while also scouting for moves and Choice-locked Pokemon like Primeape, and burning turns of Trick Room and weather. Thunder Punch can be utilized to target Qwilfish and Swanna, which otherwise have an easy time switching in. This trades off Protect's ability to outspeed foes in a pinch, but can be used to lure and KO two of its best checks. Substitute can be used in place of Protect to provide Combusken with a shield from status moves while easing prediction. However, a lack of Protect means that Combusken struggles when directly facing faster Pokemon like Kangaskhan and Pinsir, which can OHKO Combusken if lacking Eviolite. Fire Punch is a safer Fire STAB option over Flare Blitz that has no recoil, which allows it to be used multiple times without wearing down Combusken. Unfortunately, the drawback in power is highly significant, including being unable to OHKO physically bulky Pokemon such as Weezing with a Swords Dance-boosted(AH) Inferno Overdrive.

Maximum Attack and Speed investment allows Combusken to hit as hard and as quickly as possible. Using a Jolly nature allows Combusken to outspeed Pokemon that Adamant sets can't after a Speed boost, including Jynx, Scyther, and Haunter, provided none of these are using Choice Scarf. An Adamant nature can be used instead to increase Combusken's firepower and secure important KOs; this is especially significant on Firium Z variants, as this ensures that a Swords Dance-boosted(AH) Inferno Overdrive always OHKOs Weezing and Defensive Mesprit. Speed Boost is mandatory on Combusken as to boost its Speed by one stage at the end of every turn in which it's active. This allows Combusken to thrive against offensive teams,(RC) which have a difficult time taking on boosted attacks,(RC) and are often outsped due to the snowballing effect that Speed boosts have Boost creates. This additionally negates Flare Blitz's high self-recoil. Using Fightinium Z turns Sky Uppercut and Low Kick into All-Out Pummeling, doing significant damage to Pokemon that resist Flare Blitz like Lanturn and Carracosta. Combusken can trade off a Z-Crystal for an Eviolite, which enhances its bulk and eases the tension of setting up, while also allowing Combusken to stomach priority moves that are weaker against it like Sucker Punch and Mach Punch.

Usage Tips
========

Combusken excels the most late-game due to its decent power and speed after Swords Dance and Speed Boost. However, it can be effective both early-game as a wallbreaker and as a revenge killer, utilizing Protect to gain a free Speed Boost and using its potent STAB moves to punch through walls. Protect can also provide utility, being able to burn turns of Trick Room, weather, or scout for Choice-locked Pokemon such as Scyther. Combusken can be used earlier on against frailer offensive teams, which struggle to take boosted hits. It performs well later in a match versus bulky teams, where Combusken can power though through teams where checks like Altaria are weakened. Being relatively frail, especially sets lacking Eviolite, means that Combusken should only be brought in through pivoting moves like Volt Switch and U-turn, moves that heal Combusken such as Healing Wish and Z-Parting Shot, into weak resisted attacks like Froslass's Ice Beam, or into moves that have no effect whatsoever, such as Gourgeist-XL's Will-O-Wisp. Double switching can also grant Combusken favorable matchups against threats like Bellossom and Shiftry, giving Combusken a valuable chance to use Swords Dance. Use Swords Dance for when physically bulky threats such as Audino and Clefairy are still relatively healthy, as this grants Combusken the ability to KO through their high Defense. If lacking the appropriate coverage, have Pokemon such as Qwilfish and Altaria weakened or removed before attempting to sweep, as this facilitates Combusken's ability to set up with Swords Dance and utilize Speed Boost, as there's little else in the way of resisting its powerful attacks.

Grass- and Electric-types like Lilligant, Abomasnow, and Manectric can threaten bulky Ground- and Water-types like Mudsdale and Pyukumuku with their respective super effective STAB moves. The likes of Togedemaru, Eelektross, and Rotom-F can additionally provide momentum for Combusken with U-Turn and Volt Switch. Wallbreakers such as Drampa, Mesprit, and Aggron can severely weaken bulky threats, which Combusken greatly enjoys in order to secure KOs. In return, Combusken can combat the Ice-, Dark- and Grass- types Grass-types that threaten these Pokemon, like Alolan Sandslash, Absol, and Lurantis. Slower pivots such as Type: Null and Eelektross can bring Combusken in safely, with the latter being able to switch into Ground- type Ground-type attacks directed at Combusken. Other defensive pivots like Silvally-Water and Lanturn can lure in Grass- types Grass-types such as Bellossom and Lurantis. If using Eviolite variants of Combusken, Z-Parting Shot and Z-Memento from Alolan Persian and Skuntank can be used to lower the foe's offensive stats and fully heal Combusken, allowing for easier setup. Entry hazard support from the likes of Regirock, Qwilfish, and Froslass can aid Combusken by whittling at its checks. Mesprit and Clefairy provide additional support through Healing Wish, giving Combusken a second chance at sweeping if it was used earlier in a match. Inversely, Pokemon that can remove entry hazards such as Hitmonchan and Swanna can keep entry hazards off of Combusken's side, increasing the number of times it can use Flare Blitz and easing the tension of setup.
