[OVERVIEW]
Despite having largely mediocre stats and a vulnerable typing, Talonflame remains a viable option thanks to its ability Gale Wings, which gives its Flying-type moves, such as Brave Bird and Acrobatics, priority. Talonflame also has an above-average Speed stat to use its other moves quickly, which include Swords Dance, Will-O-Wisp, Roost to stay healthy, and Taunt to stop entry hazards as well as status moves and setup. It does, however, struggle with Stealth Rock, which takes away 50% of its health every time it comes in. With a lack of offensive coverage and a subpar Attack stat, Talonflame can easily be dealt with by common Pokemon like Heatran, Zapdos, Rotom-W, Tyranitar, and Thundurus.

Moves
========
Acrobatics is strong and does not wear Talonflame down with recoil like Brave Bird does. This lack of recoil, Roost, and Will-O-Wisp let Talonflame use Swords Dance to both sweep teams and break through defensive cores. Will-O-Wisp plus extra bulk makes it easier for Talonflame to set up Swords Dance compared to the offensive Sword Dance set. Roost and Will-O-Wisp also provide defensive utility.
Set Details
========
248 HP EVs minimize the damage Talonflame takes from Stealth Rock. 8 Defense EVs allow Talonflame to always live a Thunder Punch from Mega Metagross at full HP. Alternatively, you can invest 60 Attack EVs into Speed, allowing Talonflame to outspeed Pokemon up to Jolly Excadrill. Gale Wings gives Acrobatics and Roost priority. Talonflame runs no item to double the damage from Acrobatics, and this also reduces damage from Knock Off from the likes of Bisharp and Weavile.
Usage Tips
========
Talonflame's typing leaves it vulnerable to Stealth Rock, so don't send it into Stealth Rock if possible. If you must switch it in anyway, send it in on foes that can't threaten it like Mega Scizor, Skarmory, and Ferrothorn and immediately use Roost. Use Will-O-Wisp to cripple physical attackers like Tyranitar, Weavile, Mega Metagross, and Landorus-T, wear down checks and counters like Rotom-W, Zapdos, and Mega Tyranitar, and wear down more defensive threats like Skarmory and Ferrothorn so that they're forced to recover up more often. Once checks and counters are weakened or eliminated, use Swords Dance and priority Acrobatics to sweep or clean up teams.
Team Options
========
Talonflame must have a teammate that can remove Stealth Rock for it. Starmie can use Rapid Spin to remove entry hazards, switch into foes like Heatran, and spread Toxic to Water-types that can threaten Talonflame like Rotom-W and Slowbro. Starmie appreciates Talonflame's ability to spread Will-O-Wisp on Pursuit users like Tyranitar and handle Grass-types like Serperior and Amoonguss. Excadrill also has access to Rapid Spin, is able to take Electric-type attacks for Talonflame, and appreciates Talonflame resisting attacks from Fire-types like Mega Charizard Y and Volcarona as well as Grass-types like Tangrowth and Serperior. Latios and Latias can both provide Defog support while also taking on Water- and Electric-types like Rotom-W, Slowbro, Thundurus, and Zapdos. Latios and Latias also appreciate Talonflame burning common Dark-types like Bisharp and Tyranitar. Grass-types like Amoonguss, Tangrowth, and Serperior are all good partners, as they can deal with Water-types that threaten Talonflame. Mega Diancie is able to offensively check Electric-types like Zapdos and Thundurus and prevent entry hazards thanks to Magic Bounce. It also appreciates Talonflame's ability to take on Grass-types like Serperior and Amoonguss as well as Steel-types like Skarmory and Ferrothorn. Clefable can act as a status absorber, provide Knock Off and Thunder Wave support to cripple the likes of Heatran, and help with Electric-types like Rotom-W.

Moves
========
Brave Bird is Talonflame's strongest Flying-type STAB move. Will-O-Wisp is used to cripple Tyranitar, Mega Metagross, Bisharp, Landorus-T, and other physical attackers. Its residual damage is also useful against foes like Thundurus, Rotom-W, Skarmory, and Ferrothorn. Roost is used to keep Talonflame healthy so it can consistently come onto the field. Swords Dance helps it break through defensive teams as well as sweep. Taunt is a viable option over Swords Dance, as it can stop recovery from the likes of Chansey, entry hazards from Pokemon like Skarmory and Ferrothorn, and setup from foes like Clefable.
Set Details
========
Gale Wings gives Talonflame priority on Brave Bird, which allows it to revenge kill and sweep teams late-game, as well as on Roost, allowing it to stall out faster foes or avoid super effective damage from Electric-type moves like Volt Switch. 248 HP EVs allow Talonflame to take the least amount of damage from Stealth Rock, 8 Defense EVs allow it to always survive a Thunder Punch from Meta Metagross, and 252 Special Defense EVs with a Careful nature allow it to take on special hits from the likes of Mega Charizard Y, Volcarona, Serperior, and Clefable a lot more easily. Talonflame can also invest 60 Special Defense EVs into Speed, allowing it to outspeed Jolly Excadrill. Additionally, a more physically bulky spread can be run to better take on physical attackers such as Mega Scizor and Excadrill that lack Rock Slide.
Usage Tips
========
Talonflame should avoid coming onto the battlefield if Stealth Rock is up. If it must switch into Stealth Rock, make sure it comes in on Pokemon that cannot deal too much damage to it like Leftovers Clefable, Ferrothorn, Skarmory, Volcarona, and Mega Charizard Y, which all can't KO Talonflame from half HP. Make sure to use Roost right after. Use Will-O-Wisp as Pokemon that check Talonflame like Thundurus, Tyranitar, Rotom-W, and Zapdos switch in to slowly whittle them down. Take advantage of this set's bulkier spread and use Swords Dance on Pokemon that cannot outdamage Roost and Leftovers, like Mega Charizard Y, Volcarona, Clefable, Amoonguss, and Ferrothorn. Make sure Talonflame's checks are eliminated or in range of Brave Bird before you use Swords Dance.
Team Options
========
Pokemon with Rapid Spin or Defog are good partners for Talonflame given its weakness to Stealth Rock. Excadrill can use Rapid Spin and soak up Electric-type moves that threaten Talonflame. Latios and Latias can help Talonflame with its common weaknesses in Electric and Water while also removing Stealth Rock with Defog. Latios and Latias also appreciate Talonflame's ability to burn problematic Dark-types like Tyranitar and Bisharp. Starmie can help deal with the likes of Heatran, spread Toxic on Water-types like Slowbro and Rotom-W, and remove entry hazards with Rapid Spin. Starmie also appreciates Talonflame burning common Dark-types. Grass-types like Ferrothorn, Tangrowth, Amoonguss, and Serperior can help deal with Water-types like Slowbro and Quagsire, and Rock-types like Mega Diancie and Choice Scarf Tyranitar resist Electric-type hits from the likes of Magnezone and Rotom-W that threaten Talonflame. Clefable can act as a status absorber, take on Electric-types like Rotom-W, and provide Knock Off and Thunder Wave support to cripple the likes of Heatran.

Brave Bird is Talonflame's strongest Flying-type STAB move. Swords Dance allows Talonflame to break through defensive cores and clean up or sweep teams late-game. Roost is used to keep Talonflame healthy. Flare Blitz gives coverage against Steel-types like Mega Scizor, Magnezone, Excadrill, Skarmory, and Ferrothorn.
Set Details

Maximum Speed EVs allow Talonflame to outspeed base 110s, which include Latios, Latias, Mega Metagross, Mega Diancie, and Gengar. Gale Wings lets Talonflame revenge kill or clean up teams with Brave Bird as well as avoid super effective damage from Electric-type attacks via priority Roost.
Usage Tips
========
Be sure to remove Stealth Rock before sending in Talonflame. Weaken checks like Heatran, Thundurus, Rotom-W, and Tyranitar before setting up Swords Dance. Use Swords Dance on foes that cannot threaten Talonflame like Ferrothorn, Serperior, Clefable, and Choice item users locked into a move that cannot threaten it, like Magnezone locked into Flash Cannon or Hidden Power Fire. Take advantage of Gale Wings to revenge kill as well as strike before faster foes like Mega Lopunny, Tornadus-T, Serperior, and Weavile.
Team Options
========
This set is best used on a more offensive team archetype like hyper offense. Talonflame requires teammates that can remove entry hazards; Excadrill can use Rapid Spin as well as absorb Electric-type attacks for Talonflame. Starmie also has access to Rapid Spin, and it checks Talonflame checks like Heatran and Hippowdon. Latios can provide Defog support while also handling Water- and Electric-type attacks. Latias shares Latios's advantages and can also provide Healing Wish support for Talonflame. Mega Pinsir can weaken Talonflame's checks and counters, as they share similar switch-ins, like Rotom-W, Thundurus, Zapdos, and Mega Diancie. Manaphy can take on Talonflame checks like Heatran, Hippowdon, and Tyranitar while also appreciating Talonflame's ability to take on Grass-types like Ferrothorn.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Offensive sets like Choice Band and three attacks with Sharp Beak can be run but are subpar at best. Bulk Up can also be run over Swords Dance to increase Talonflame's defensive presence.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Rock-types**: Mega Diancie resists Talonflame's attacks and is immune to Will-O-Wisp thanks to Magic Bounce. It can also OHKO Talonflame with Diamond Storm. Tyranitar resists Talonflame's STAB moves and can threaten it back with Stone Edge, but Will-O-Wisp on the switch severely cripples it.
**Electric-types**: Thundurus, Rotom-W, Zapdos, and Magnezone can all threaten Talonflame with Volt Switch or Thunderbolt. If Talonflame is not at full HP, though, it can use Roost to make these moves not super effective.
**Bulky Water-types**: Physically defensive Water-types like Slowbro, Mega Slowbro, Alomomola, and Quagsire can take Talonflame's attacks easily while threatening it back with a super effective STAB Scald. Bulky Water-types are also likely to have Toxic, which puts Talonflame on a timer.
**Ground-types**: Garchomp can tank attacks from Talonflame and punish it with Rough Skin and Rocky Helmet or use Toxic against it. Hippowdon can take hits from Talonflame and threaten it back with a Rock Slide. Both of these Ground-types, however, do not appreciate Taunt or Will-O-Wisp.
**Heatran**: Heatran resists Talonflame's STAB moves while also being immune to Will-O-Wisp. It can then set up Stealth Rock, which Talonflame does not appreciate, or cripple it with Toxic. However, if Talonflame has Taunt, Heatran cannot beat it.
