- Team Cold Front -

Hello Smogon! I’m a new member here, but have been lurking for a while. I’m somewhat new to competitive battling, as I have been on Shoddy for about a week now. I have been playing Pokemon since Crystal, so I’m no newbie to the game.

I decided for my first competitive team to make a Hail team for two main reasons. 1) I have always liked Ice types and weather teams. 2) Glaceon is my favorite Pokemon and she works the best in Hail.

Building the Team:

As I said earlier, I love Glaceon, so I decided to build a team around her. Glaceon has the strongest Blizzard in the game, and in Hail it’s 100% accurate and her evasion is increased. So Hail it is!

If I’m going to be using a Hail team, I’ll need a reliable way to start the storm. Abomasnow starts the infinite Hail at the beginning of battle, so he will make a great lead. I also like him because of his Sub-Seeding abilities.

After looking into a bunch of other Hail teams I came across Stallrein. Otherwise known as Walrein, he can stall out in the Hail for up to 32 turns, and makes a great wall. If I have seed set up he'll last even longer than that. Toxic helps to stall out opponents as well. He will be a great addition to my Hail team.

Now that I have 3 Ice types, I see a huge Fighting weakness right away. Rotom-F can resist Fighting, abuse 100% accuracy Blizzards, and punish bulky waters that try to wall me with Tbolt. A perfect fit.

I still have a few weaknesses shared by my Pokemon that I need to check, as well as the lack of a physical attacker. Oh, hey Swampert! Swampert resists Rock and Fire and has a great physical move pool to work with. He has great defenses to boot!

With only one spot left, I think I need a Cleric incase things get ugly. I choose Celebi for it’s Natural Cure to absorb statuses, and Grass Knot to take down the likes of Tyranitar and Bulky Waters that would give me trouble.

Celebi only added more of a Fire weakness to my team and the whole point of her was Heal Bell which I never used. I decided to drop Celebi for Tentacruel for his resistance to Fire, Steel, and Fighting which my team hates. Also functions as a Spinner and TSpiker.

Specifics:

Hail Summoner

460m.png

Abomasnow @ Leftovers
Snow Warning
EV’s: 252 HP/4 Def/252 SAtk
Quiet Nature (+SAtk –Spd)
-Blizzard
-Leech Seed
-Substitute
-Protect

Aaah, Abomasnow. My trusty hail starter and Sub-Seeder. Blizzard is obvious 100% acc STAB, and Protect is to stall out with Substitute. Protect can be used to scout incoming attacks aswell. I’m considering adding another attack to him in place of Protect though. I’m not sure yet. I made him slow on purpose to ensure my Hail will be the weather put into effect. 0 IV in speed.

Blizzard Queen
471m.png

Glaceon @ Leftovers
Snow Cloak
EV’s: 200 HP/252 SAtk/56 SDef
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
-Blizzard
-HP Fighting
-Wish
-Protect

Glaceon’s Blizzards are just plain scary, and can do some good damage even to Pokemon who resist it. HP Fighting gives good coverage alongside Ice. Wish and Protect allow me to heal up while opponent still takes damage from Hail. Evasion + 20% really helps out making Stone Edge hard to hit. I’m not sure on the Lefties, but other than that I love this set.

Solid Ice Wall

365m.png

Walrein @ Leftovers
Ice Body
EV’s: 220 HP/240 Def/48 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
-Surf
-Substitute
-Protect
-Toxic

The mighty Stallrein with near infinite subs. Obviously create Sub, Protect to gain back HP via Lefties and Ice Body, then Sub again if needed or use a STAB Surf. I dropped Hail for Toxic because I found I never needed it thanks to Abomasnow. Toxic is now here to add to the stall that he can do.

Ghostly Fridge

479ice.png

Frostom @ Choice Specs
Levitate
EV’s: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
-Blizzard
-Thunderbolt
-Shadow Ball
-Trick

Frostom as I like to call it is my Ice Pokemon fighting resist. He also can’t be hit by Ground or Normal attacks, so he is good for blocking a Rapid Spin once Swampert sets up rocks. Blizzard/TBolt functions just like Bolt/Beam but more powerful and no worries about accuracy. STAB Shadow Ball ensures I can hit just about everything for at least neutral damage. Trick is for when I come across a wall I can give it Specs to ruin it's fun.

Icy Rocker

260m.png

Swampert @ Leftovers
Torrent
EV’s: 252 HP/56 Atk/200 Def
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
-Waterfall
-Earthquake
-Stealth Rock
-Roar

Swampert is my counter for Fire and Rock types that threaten my Ice Pokemon. Swampert can also handle Tyranitar and Hippowdon with ease that can give Hail teams trouble. STAB Waterfall and Quake have awesome coverage. He can set up Stealth Rock and then Roar to cause more residual damage by switch in alongside Hail, and ruin someone trying to raise their stats. EV's make him bulky and ensure he survives a long time.

Toxic Spinner

073m.png

Tentacruel @ Leftovers
Liquid Ooze
EV’s: 252 HP/120 Def/136 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
-Surf
-Knock Off
-Toxic Spikes
-Rapid Spin

Newest addition to my team. Added in place of Celebi because Celebi wasn't doing much for me. Tenta gives me another Fire counter as well as resistances to Fighting and Steel that my team hates. STAB Surf for the Fire types I switch into. Knock Off to get rid of Leftovers that nullify Hail damage. Toxic Spikes to add to the stall strategy I have going, and Rapid Spin to clear my feild of them. Liquid Ooze ruins a Seeders day. Tentacruel is the perfect addition to my team because I switch in Frostom when I see a TBolt coming. Nice and bulky to survive a while. Tenta and Frostom work well together because they cover each other and Frostom stops them from spinning my Toxic spikes.

So that’s my team, any help or suggestions you guys have I’d love to hear it, but one thing I will not change is my Glaceon. It is the heart of the team and my favorite. Some say she isn’t good enough, but she is the MVP in most of my matches. So anyways thanks for looking!

Hey, welcome to Smogon, where uu is forever in disarray.

Anyway, I dont really have time for a full rate, but 2 things i noiticed, and both are related.

You MUST keep Swampert alive. Without him, your entire team is walled to death by Blissey. Also, DDTar absolutely runs through this team without Swampert present, all while changing the weather out of your favor. Oh, and definately drop Hail on Stallrein for Toxic.

Once again, welcome, and good luck.

I would get Toxic over Hail and HP: Fire or Psychic over Leach Seed or Heal Bell on Celebi.

Toxic helps you crack non Aromatherapy walls and provides much more use than Hail, which unless you're facing Tyranitar, will be up the entire game anyways. You need to be conservative with Abomasnow. HP:Fire will help take care of Scizor, which can be dangerous to half your team, and Leach Seed isn't really doing much as Celebi isn't a main staller of the team. You can also use Psychic in HP:Fire's place if you like, or replace Heal Bell if you find statuses aren't a big deal or Leach Seed is too good to pass up.

since you have walrien who stalls out heavy physical attacks, maybe use blissey or a specal wall variant of celebi? you can still run celeric wih blissey.
also, you have 4 weak to fire with one resistance. that is something to think about for sure.

Miidnight and Class: Thanks for your suggestions. I dropped Hail for Toxic and Leech Seed for HP: Fire on Celebi. I'm going to try these changes out.

el fizz: My Fire weakness does worry me, but I'm unsure on which Poke to use or which one to replace.

EDIT: For some reason I can't use HP: Fire on my Celebi, so for now I made it Psychic.

i would switch hp ground to shadow ball. 70 base power isnt enough when not super effective. I would also switch celebi to breloom/machamp/heracross/infernape/lucario. Breloom, heracross and machamp beat blissey and absorb stats like celebi. Infernape and lucario are great cleaners to finish the game. all five also beat t-tar. Imo i would run breloom, with spore/leech seed/fp/sub. You could run the sd set though. You have a great team for just starting, so keep strong and good luck!

EDIT: Infernape is frail, but it would help a little with the fire weakness. A poliwrath (i know lol) could help. Focus punch beats blissey and it helps a lot with your fire weakness. Give it a try, as it can also use blizzard! (dont use blizzard)

why not try a flash fire pokemon to deal with your hail team? heatran is bothe the best flash fire pokemon and really useful even not on a hail team. the trouble would be where to put it... but im not sure you really need celebi

Thanks guys. I am trying Shadow Ball in place of HP Ground on Frostom. When it comes to Celebi, I realized I NEVER use Heal Bell which was my main reason to use her in the first place. So I'll drop her but for what I'm not sure.

I know I need a Fire resist, but Breloom does sound good. I faced one today that made me want to rip my hair out. I'm also looking into Heatran, but I despise the thing so I might not use it.

heatran would definitely work well on this team, considering opposing heatran will have a field day with your team.

I decided to try out Tentacruel in place of Celebi. It should do great, considering it covers everything I needed it too and adds to the stall of my team. I don't know how I missed Tenta before.

So I'm going to test this put, still looking for help on the team though. Is this the best Tenta set?

This might or might not work, and is entirely theorymon, but I think Hariyama could help your team out. He is sturdy and with Thick Fat he resists Fire attacks. He also resists Rock and doesn't afraid of DDTar since he resists Dark, Rock, and Fire (most DDTar run Fire Punch). There's lots of things you can do with him as well, depending on what your team needs. He can RestTalk to absorb status, tank hits on both sides with his massive HP, etc. Give him Close Combat or Bulk Up and he should make a good Blissey switch in.

Another good thing about Heatran is that he gives you a great Steel resist so Scizor doesn't Bullet Punch your team to death.

Hey! I just played you! Anyways, going on what I said earlier, you don't need a 4th user of blizzard. So dump Frostom and use rotom-w or something like that to cover your fire weakness. You could probably just drop rotom completely for zapdos as well. It counters scizor and it can get rid of bulky waters walling your blizzards.

Sorry dont have time for full rate.
You should put a physical attacker on your team in place of tentecruel because blissey walls you. Also this will take the pressure off swampert scince he is your only hope against ttar who rips your team.

Yea, Heatran is good on this team, but I hate him. Well what do you suggest I drop for Heatran/Hariyama?
If anything drop Tentacruel.

If you really, really wanted to be incredibly annoying, you could replace with a lvl 1 Endeavor/Protect/Encore/T-wave Clefable with a Focus Sash. Endeavor +hail damage = kill on most things. T-wave and Encore harass ice or ghost types, and protect helps you live longer to Endeavor more things.

It's a gimmick, but believe me, I've seen enough Abomasnow+Stallrein+Mamo/Glaceon/Weavile+Clefable+Clefairy+Cleffa to really hate hail teams.

I don't want the gimmicky ones. >.<

My fire weakness isn't as bad now with Tenta and Swampert. I only have 3 Blizzard users, but Rotom-W does seem like a decent idea. Zapdos is an idea, but I really need a Physical attacker more than anything.

I might be able to to make Abomasnow a Physichal attacker.

I'm testing various things right now.

Hariyama is looking good because he can resist Fire, Rock, Fighting, and is good against Steel which are my 4 main weaknesses. He's Physical and can stop T-Tar and Blissey.

So I'll test Hariyama in place of Tenta. Oh how I love Tenta now though. :/ I love everyone on this team.

Just for the record: 16 Wins/ 6 Losses :D

Hello brother! I myself specialised in Ice Pokemon for years! Lorelei taught us to become as hard as ice in battle, thus learn the most basic lesson for usage of Ice-type Pokemon; don't base them on stall. Why bother stall with such a poor defensive type anyway?

~Abomasnow has for most-useful movesets; take your pic, as all add very vital physical force to your team.

1)
460.png
@Choice Scarf

174Atk/84SpA/252Spe
Hasty nature
~Blizzard
~Wood Hammer
~Earthquake
~Rock Slide

Mixed attacker and a suprise-killer for alot of common leads. 84SpA ensure a 2HKO on Skarmory with Blizzard, while 174Atk power up the rest of your moves. Rock Slide is also very usable for flinching.

2)
460.png
@Life Orb
252Atk/6Def/252SpA
Jolly nature
~Swords Dance
~Wood Hammer
~Ice Shard
~Earthquake

A set-up lead that actually works! Ice Shard makes up for the low speed and picks off most things, these that aren't will fall to Wood Hammer of Earthquake. Jolly enables you to outurn Adamant Breloom to avoid a costly Mach Punch, as well as Adamant Tyranitar.

3)
460.png
@
Choice Band
252Atk/6Def/252Spe
Adamant nature
~Ice Shard
~Wood Hammer
~Ice Punch
~Earthquake

Hits hard right off the bat with 311Atk combined with a Choice Band.

4)
460.png
@
Leftovers
252HP/252Atk/6Spe
Adamant nature
~Substitute
~Focus Punch
~Avalanche
~Wood Hammer

A bulkier alternative to deal damage with. 6Spe EVs Outurn Impish Swampert; 252HP give maximum Leftovers recovery and maximum effectiveness ofor every Substitute used.

~Glaceon <3...Foxy <3...either replace Protect for Fake Tears or go ScarfFox:
Spr_4p_471.png
@Choice Scarf

6Def/252SpA/252Spe
Timid nature
~Blizzard
~HP Fighting
~Shadow Ball
~Ice Beam

If you stick with the Fake Tears set, Glaceon needs 48Spe EVs to beat Skarmory one-on-one, so take that in account.

~Why are people not using Blizzard on Walrein?
Spr_4d_365.png
@Leftovers
220HP/252Def/38SpA
Bold nature, Ice Body trait
~Protect
~Blizzard
~Substitute
~Surf

~Rotom-A can't do much to Infernape, who will only deal more damage to your team with Fire Blast after reciving Choice Specs, not ot mention beeing virtually useless aganst SpecsLuke. Use this to eliminate various Fighters insted:
Spr_4d_124.png
@Choice Scarf

252SpA/6SpD/252Spe
Timid nature, Forewarn trait
~Lovely Kiss
~Blizzard
~Focus Blast
~Psychic

~240HP/52Atk/218Def for Swampert, Avalanche over Roar-having many Ice moves on your team doesn't make it's coverage any less nessecary.

~Timid, 204HP/156SpA/150Spe on Tentacruel; also drop Knock Off for Blizzard.
---
Welcome brother! Ice forever!

Wow ColdEye thanks! On Abomasnow lately I have been considering giving him a more Physical moveset, but the only thing that worries me is speed. If you make Abomasnow fast enough to take out Breloom and the likes, then if you are facing another weather starter Pokemon their weather will override Hail. The slower Pokemon starts the weather, and Abomasnow is my only way to start Hail. Without Hail I have to deal with Blizzards terrible accuracy.

On Glaceon, I have tried the Tears Set before, and I really prefer this set. Protect ensures Glaceon will get the Wish. This set allows my Glaceon to survive a long time, and Glaceon can usually take out a few pokemon late game. I'm not sure I want to Scarf it because then I don't have a recovery option. Plus Blizzard + Ice Beam would be pontless unless Blizzard ran out of PP.

The only reason Walrein doesn't run Blizzard is because most of my other Pokemon do, and he is meant to stall. I'd rather have STAB Surf for taking out Fire types. Toxic actually works insanely well.

I'm not sure on Jynx. I'll test her, but Lovely Kiss with a Scarf means I'll have to switch her right away and if SR is out that won't be fun. The only thing is she dosen't directly benefit from Hail enough to add another Ice type to my team. Sure she gets 100% acc Blizzards but so does Frostom and he is my fighting resist.

I like your Swampert idea, and I have been wanting to try Avalanche for a while. I'll test this out.

Tentacruel is a good defensive pokemon for me so he can survive to Rapid Spin and then lay my own TSpikes. Knock Off removes Leftovers so that they are punished by hail.

Thanks for all the input. :D
Ice Forever!

I personally preffer offensive teams, maybe I'm trying to bring some offense into your team; if I may ask, is this a shoddy team or an actual one?

At worst you'll just switch Abomasnow in again-you should be by far more concerned about KOing Tyranitar before doing the same to you. Abomasnow's STAB Wood Hammer can get you past most bulky Waters, even such as Suicune and Slowbro who run CM., as well as the already-mentioned Tyranitar; Hippopowdon has significantly lower SpD than Def, you Blizzard would hit it alot harder thought.

You said, unless Blizzard runs out of PP, which will happen alot.

You already have Toxic Spikes, and Walrein actually has fairly high SpA, not to mention Ice and Water pairing very well, it's a pity to waste that.

The Scarf set is a hit (or sleep) and run set; it;s very important to run after sleeping a key Pokemon, as otherwise the likes of Tyranitar, Weavile and Absol could Pursuit it. Jynx also revenge-kills Infernape (a great threat for Hail teams) and +1Spe Salamence, unless it's running a Naive/Jolly nature. Jynx also doesn't add Fighting weakness due to beeing part-Psychic.

Ice+Ground has brilliant coverage, and an Ice attack is nessecary to hit Grass-types which resists Waterfall and EQ. Avalanche is preffered to Ice Punch, as Swampert is rather slow and will go last most of the time anyway.

A fast Rapid Spin is very useful, trust me, and Blizzard with the EVs mentiones give you to chance to outurn and kill any non-Scarf, neutral-natured Salamence (which is most of them).

Ice forever...wait, is there forever in snowland?

This is a Shoddy Team, so no worries about making new Pokemon. I'm going to go try out a faster more offensive Abomasnow, and see how it works.

I really like Toxic on Walrein, but I'll try out Blizzard in place of it.

Do you think I should drop Waterfall or just Roar for Avalanche. I think I need Waterfall for pesky Fire types.

Thanks! I'm going to test these out today, had no time yesterday, I'll let you know how it does.

Ice Forever! (Even in Snowland!)
