Team Ethics

I think it's fine as long as you ask permission, or at least don't try to claim it as your own. If you're using a published team you should at least adapt it to fit the current metagame though.

I generally like to make my own teams because I don't care about laddering, but I will often try a RMT for a spin. If it's on the RMT then the poster wants you to try out the team for a ton of battles and then tell them how well it worked, and what could be improved. For other teams if you battle a team and take a set it is really no big deal. A lot of stall teams use many of the same sets since they are the most effective. Besides as some one earlier posted, 2 people can have almost identical pokemon and still play the game completely differently.

It's ethical to always give props to the person who created the team if you are complimented on it.

I like making my own teams, they are comfy and easy to wear!

/end obvious lie.

I usually make my own teams because I can, and I like to include gimmics usually (like Seviper in NU!) However, I admit, I've stolen a team or two in the past. In fact, although I hardly ever are on the normal server of Shoddy nowadays (prefering CAP), whenever I go to play normal OU, I have been using CCAT #1 (the team with Heracross). Granted, I was one of the bigger contributors to that (in my mind), so it doesn't really count, but still.

And back in DP, weren't most stall teams essentially copies of ObiStall? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they generally were.

I'm ok with it, as long as the creator of that team gave permission. But don't steal a team where copyright is on >) (Reason why I got problems with somebody <.<;)

I actually feel its detrimental to NOT use other people's teams.

It's more satisfying to win with your own team and team building is a lot of fun by itself, but using other people's teams can give you insight and experience you may not get otherwise. Sometimes you'll come across a team you would have never come up with yourself. Not because it was particularly creative but people tend to build teams based on their personality and play style. If you break out of that it can lead to some interesting battles, also you can find the weaknesses in the team and by trying to improve on it you better your own team building skills. Plus if you got it from an RMT thread you can help that person out with your input.

Pretty much this is also my exact thought. It always feels better for me to use my own team which i EV trained and Breed myself than using someone Else's team. It makes the hard work worth it when you see the results.

Do they have some sort of patent?

This thread should've been locked after this post, lol.

There's no rule against using someone's team, there's no "patent" on a team you create. People are free to take any team they wish, and no one can do anything about it.
