Team Fortress 2 - The Official Discussion Thread

I didn't even manage to figure out what a Polycount Pack IS until yesterday...

if you decide to buy it (do), start out with soldier, since it's a very easy class to pick up and play, even if you aren't a master of rocketjumping.

It's also the class you play in our relatively new loltraining mode. :justin:

Other people have answered it but I'm not really satisfied with them.

i've been looking at this game in stores and stuff, and i've convinced myself not to buy it atleast three times. i play games like cod and bad co2, and none of the gameplay videos that i watch of this game seem to convince me that it's worth getting. anyway, the questions i wanted to ask were: are there any classes that are better than others? are there higher tiered weapons?

While there aren't straight up always better classes in TF2, some classes are in a majority of situations better than others. Medic/Soldier is almost always more useful to have than Engies, Pyros, and Spies even in equal class distributions, for example. Scouts rape in small games (read: comp) but die in large games. On top of that, classes don't get to their skill ceiling equally. Pyro doesn't improve much other than fancy use of the airblast, while good Scouts are able to go around the map killing everyone. Engie has practically no skills to learn at all (maybe the update changed that, I'll have to check).

Higher tiered weapons do exist, fact of life with almost every game. Scattergun beats out the Shotgun, Shotgun beats out the SMG, the pistol is an inaccurate piece of shit that serves as a "your barrel is empty" replacement. However, Valve tries to balance this out by giving a decent combination of weapons with player class. The Minigun (giant machine gun) is given to the slowest (but most HP) class in the game, so he can be beaten 2v1 (he's slow so he can't run away or look for a more favorable match). The Sniper can OHKO half the cast in a single headshot, but he has low amounts of health and his secondary weapon is the SMG or a jar of piss (don't ask).

Also, about what class to start with: Pyro is the easiest to do well with. Soldier is easy to do half-decently with, but he improves as you play and is almost always useful.

thanks, Super. that's exactly the kind of answer i was looking for. i know the game is extremely different from cod, as Minwu said. but the specific insight from a player that you provided is the info i needed.

and thanks to everyone else who replied, all input helps.

The results of the poly weapons contest has been announced, although the content hasn't shipped yet.

http://www.polycount.com/2010/07/15/the-team-fortress-2-polycount-pack-winners/

Several exciting new things, although another round of soldier weapons, we're getting a new spy knife, and I'll love to have the sniper set, and here is hoping the pyro flamethrower raises the skill level.

What i want to know is why the medic, one of the most vital classes, hasn't had a single community weapon. Especially shocking seeing as it was the first class updated, thus the longest without any new weapons.

Well this content pack was meant more for some really outstanding packs that look good and go well together. Not a stunt Valve pulled just to get more free items.

Although it would be nice to see a new medic item, really that last big change seen from his was the readjustment of the blut and giving him an auto +3 HP per second.

Oh and a novelty taunt kill, that cemented the ubersaw as the only melee the medic will ever need.

Also I really hope they don't follow this stupid trend of adding the bleed mechanic to every weapon. The spy seems to get neutered every day. With his two main target's both getting very good spy counter weapons.

I fail to see how the bleed is a big deal for the spy. Both of the bleed weapons so far have the downside of not being able to flat-out oneshot a spy with a crit, due to the Shiv's lowered damage and the Southern Hospitality's lack of crits. Besides, if the Spy is getting thwacked, he's probably dead already. The bleed just makes it slightly harder for him to get way, but not impossible. Also, why is the Spy fucking around with getting hit by Engineers and Snipers, his two main targets? If he's not destroying them outright before getting hit with whatever new bleed toy they pick up, he's doing it wrong anyway.

I had a fairly awesome time as Spy on Coldfront yesterday, mainly because there's 3 paths that a spy can take to get into position. Basically, I'd just alternate between Demoman, Pyro, and Engineer disguises, then roll up on medics, wrangler engies (WRANGER MAKES YOU HUGE SPY BAIT, JUST SAYIN), heavies, snipers, pretty much anything I could get my knife on. Ended up getting 2 or 3 kills per life with no trouble at all. It was pretty sweet.

I totally agree with SDS. If you aren't killing the 2 most spy bait classes in the game and you are getting hit by bleed weapons, then you totally deserve to die.

Btw, I've started playing again... If you look below you can see the server I mostly play on. I'm mostly careering medicing again but I raised my K:D to 2.0 before I started, come and play a game or two with me. My steam account name has changed since last summer. It is matt3774

PS: New Engi shotgun is pretty freaking cool, everything else is ok

After the nerf I stopped using the Shiv since I never really needed it except on DR spies, and there's Jarate anyway. Even playing on servers with random crits disabled the Southern Hospitality isn't that enticing. I want to be able to poke into the front lines every now and then to use my Revenge Crits without worrying about being ignited.

SHello. I know nothing of this game but what users do you know that spend the maximum amount of time per two weeks on this game? Shadowninjs is above 600 hours and clocked 70 hours in a fortnight the last time I've checked

To be fair, Snipers are probably the only class you can easily backstab, unless they're using the Razorback, whereas then just shoot them a few times. Engineers... if there are two around, forget even attempting a backstab. Just have some Demoman go in and clean it up for you.

Ended up getting 34 points in one life as a Spy the other day.

So guys a highlander tournament, I think smogon could have a decent chance if we mushed up a good team.

I'd be willing to play pyro or even engineer.

I've also been collecting like crazy all these extra unlockables for the poly update. Here's hoping valve makes some weapon combinations like they did for all the other community weapons.

I got this game for free(friend dose not want orange box on for the PC) but unfortunately my video card broke:(. So as I need a new one could you please tell me which ones you use?

australians have no chance because of our lag so I'm out....sarge too probably but I can't speak for him. wish I could play though

If you're just looking for a cheap card that can run TF2, you could try t+et an old 8800 off eBay for $60 or however much they're selling for these days. TF2 is a three-year-old game, so a three-year-old video card should be adequate to handle it.

If you want something higher-end for newer games, the 5770 is probably the most economical modern card on the market, you can probably snag one for under $150.

Thanks for the help but I got one that can play TF2 at this shop thats closing done, so it was £30. Now to practice :)

I just picked up this game again. It's been at least 6 months. I play on Axl's TF2 server, if anyone else has heard of it. The only thing that bugs me about this game is the rock/paper/scissor attitude it develops. So usually I go with medic or demo, as they are the classes that I feel have the most freedom from the rock/paper/scissor gameplay.

Pick me up :o I think I can sub well enough for anything but Sniper. Playing for Smogon would be really cool, and I know one or two great DMers itching for a team in case there's a shortage of those classes...
