Metagame Tera Override

Late to the Party

I know we're about to be two months removed from this OM, but I thought it's better late than never to make a post about my Talonflame Sun team that was not only featured in Jimothy Cool's Tera Override video, but I also managed to hit top 10 for the very first time in any OM I played with this team during the early stages of the format.

Top 10 on 10/5/2025
image (1).png

It took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to get to that point(as you can see with the 66.4% GXE), but I managed to pull through, and although I did fall out of the top 10 and failed to reattain it. I couldn't be more proud of making it work, especially since I gaslit myself into thinking Talonflame was actually getting a sun boost for far longer than I should.
Q: How does Stellar Tera work?
A:
The intended mechanics is that it gives you the original mechanics of the moves, items, and abilities. Currently, the implementation is such that Stellar works like any other type.

Team: Talon Flame Wing Sun

:Talonflame:-:Walking Wake:-:Lilligant-Hisui:-:Great Tusk:-:Hatterene:-:Ninetales:

As you can tell from the name, the goal of this team was to use Tera Fire Talonflame :Talonflame: to have Gale Wings grant sun-boosted priority fire moves. I got the idea after taking inspiration from Kittenlaser's OU sun team, with Talonflame fulfilling a role akin to Comfey, This was in hopes of turning Talonflame into a powerful nuke who was difficult to revenge kill. At first, I tried running physical Talonflame since its attack was higher, but none of the options worked out. Tera Fire Tera Blast doesn't work with Gale Wings, Temper Flare is too weak, and Flare Blitz has anti-synergy due to recoil damage. So I tried it as a special attacker since it had far stronger fire options to work with, and the multipliers from Sun, Tera, and Specs would circumvent only having 74 SpA. However, since I wasn't able to receive the Sun Boost for Talonflame, the strat shifted from nuking with it to late-game cleaning as the team would try to wallbreak and chip threats so that they would be put into Talonflame's range.

Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Overheat
- Solar Beam
- Air Slash
- Flamethrower

Despite not having the sun boost, Talonflame did match up quite well against a lot of the common attackers and sweepers in the early stages of the format. It was also able to OHKO or 2HKO a lot of prominent threats once with Tera Fire Flamethrower or Overheat.
This included OHKO's with Tera Fire Flamethrower on threats such as Hawlucha:Hawlucha:(pre-ban) and Bombirdier:Bombirdier:or 2HKOs on the likes of Heatran:Heatran: and Kyurem:Kyurem:.

With Solar Beam as coverage, you're also able to 2HKO most Molas:Alomomola:, Prims:Primarina: and Gargs:Garganacl:. Although this does take a dedicated read, which can backfire.

Had Stellar Type worked as intended, it would have had a far better time clicking its fire moves against them and other switch-ins such as Raging Bolt:Raging Bolt: and Slowking-G:Slowking-Galar: who all often walled Flame while also putting heavy pressure onto the rest of the team with super-effective damage, strong chip, or turning off Sun(looking at you g-king). To give an example, here are some calcs I got that put it into perspective.

Without Sun Boost:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Talonflame Overheat vs. 252 HP / 248+ SpD Slowking-Galar: 163-193 (41.3 - 48.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Talonflame Overheat vs. 252 HP / 204+ SpD Garganacl: 97-114 (24 - 28.2%) -- possible 5HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Talonflame Overheat vs. 252 HP / 8 SpD Primarina: 105-124 (28.8 - 34%) -- 99.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Choice Specs Talonflame Overheat vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Raging Bolt: 132-156 (33.7 - 39.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Talonflame Overheat vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Alomomola: 137-162 (25.6 - 30.3%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

With Sun Boost:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Talonflame Overheat vs. 252 HP / 248+ SpD Slowking-Galar in Sun: 246-289 (62.4 - 73.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Talonflame Overheat vs. 252 HP / 204+ SpD Garganacl in Sun: 145-171 (35.8 - 42.3%) -- 93.1% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Choice Specs Talonflame Overheat vs. 252 HP / 8 SpD Primarina in Sun: 158-186 (43.4 - 51%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Choice Specs Talonflame Overheat vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Raging Bolt in Sun: 199-234 (50.8 - 59.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Talonflame Overheat vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Alomomola in Sun: 206-243 (38.5 - 45.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

With Sun Boost & Tera:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Tera Fire Talonflame Overheat vs. 252 HP / 248+ SpD Slowking-Galar in Sun: 328-386 (83.2 - 97.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Tera Fire Talonflame Overheat vs. 252 HP / 204+ SpD Garganacl in Sun: 194-229 (48 - 56.6%) -- 35.5% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Choice Specs Tera Fire Talonflame Overheat vs. 252 HP / 8 SpD Primarina in Sun: 211-249 (57.9 - 68.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Choice Specs Tera Fire Talonflame Overheat vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Raging Bolt in Sun: 266-313 (68 - 80%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

- Flip Turn

Initially, I ran Kittenlaser's AV Wake set before switching to an offensive Life Orb set as I was lacking a much-needed wallbreaker that would help set up a Talonflame sweep. This ended up being a great decision as it greatly changed my match-up into the bulky waters, as I could only rely on H-Lilligant to beat them. The offensive EV spread meant I was able use Tera Electric Weather Ball as a potent coverage option before the move was banned.

It allowed me guaranteed 2HKO's against non-vested:Assault Vest: waters like: Prim:Primarina:, Azu:Azumarill:, and Mola:Alomomola:. Although I would eventually swap Wake's tera type to Grass so I could catch Tera Ground Liquid Voice Primarina and still threaten the waters.

Since Weather Ball's ban, I have been shopping for other Mon's to take Wake's place, namely Raging Bolt:Raging Bolt:, since it benefits from sun and it threatens many of Talonflame's resists.

H-Lilligant was the Mon I would experiment with the most and would even take it off my team on a few occasions. Eventually, I settled on the basic sun sweeper set, as I was sorely in need of a physical attacker. I also went with Focus Sash:Focus Sash: over LO:Life Orb:, as many threats could reverse-sweep me if Talon was taken out early, or if I took damage that I couldn't heal. Tera Ice was used to deal big damage to dragon types and just boost Taxel damage. I would end up swapping H-Lilligant's tera to ghost after I fell out of the top 10 and terrain teams started to become very prominent on the Tera Override ladder. Before I had took a break from the meta, I remember I was still shopping for a Lilligant-H replacement due to the amount of immunities going around that were often Ice:Thundurus-Therian: or Fighting:Goodra-Hisui:, despite that, I think I will give it another chance come Tera Override's return.

For Tusk, I kept the defensive set since the speed boost in sun allows me to spin on mons that are normally faster than Tusk. With that in mind I decided to play around with Assault Vest to allow it to survive special attacks it normally wouldn't have and get a Rapid Spin off. I also toyed around with Boots + tera grass Stealth Rock to get grass-type damage vs Bulky Waters, Garg:Garganacl:, and other Great Tusk:Great tusk:, but I found myself bouncing rocks back with Hatt more often than setting my own. As a result, I went back to Knock Off + Vest. I can't give a good enough reason why I kept Tera Grass, but after falling out of the top 10, I did end up going back to boots + rocks, and I changed my Tera type to electric. This would allow me to still deal 25% damage to waters while also hurting the flyers of the meta. I plan to experiment with Tusk's set a lot more when the chance arises.

To help keep hazards off the field for Talonflame and Lilligant, I elected to use the classic eject button Hatterene in sun. Can't really go wrong with this mon in sun, so there isn't too much to say about it. Although Hatterene's tera was something I mulled over quite a bit due to bouncing Steel Type rocks, which didn't due too much for me, however, I really enjoyed being able to deal with Glimm:Glimmora: and preventing Mortal Spins.

Sticking with Tera Steel also ended up being quite helpful, as a normal resist against the Pop Bomb Mausholds :Maushold: and Espeed Dnites :Dragonite:on Tera Normal Terrain.

Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 248 HP / 20 Def / 240 Spe

- Fire Blast
- Will-O-Wisp
- Encore
- Healing Wish
And last but not least, I decided to keep Kittenlaser's Ninetales to be my sun setter, as Ninetales offered several benefits to my team. Firstly, it being decently fast not only meant I could reliably burn or encore slower mons, but I also could ensure that I would get my own Tera Type Sun over someone who was using Torkoal:Torkoal: on lead, as my Drought would activate first. This would've been very crucial had the Tera Stellar override cleanse actually worked.

After learning it didn't cleanse, I changed its tera type to Fairy so that I could weaken Primarina's Fairy Stab:Primarina:. Since I wasn't getting the sun boost, I decided to go for Fire Blast as the extra power over Flamethrower was nice when I decided to attack with Ninetales. Base Ninetales also being slower than Alolatales:Ninetales-Alola:allowed me to prevent their snow from coming up on lead. On top of that its naturally good Spdef and fire typing meant I could switch in to stop veil without worry.

Most importantly, I could almost always confirm at least one Healing Wish during a battle since it and Hatterene both had the move. This, as you can imagine, was great synergy with Gale Wings Talonflame. Later down the line, I would change its tera to normal so I could weaken Normal-type moves, although I think I see myself trying Tera Ghost the next time this OM is challengable.

That's hilarious. Which part were you at? I didn't really watch the video, besides being embarrassed at the portion where he watched my battle and saw some of my questionable plays:worrywhirl:

At least I got the win so it ended well for me
