There is nothing to be done. Still, Hypno didn't make it this far in this very competitive jungle by just laying down and not resisting.

As you walk away from the scene, not even taking a single berry since they weren't your goal to begin with, Morpeko eyes you warily until you disappear between bushes and begins to rummage through its stockpile before taking out several berries. It turns to Hypno and tries to tend to it. What will happen to them next? Who knows.

According to your treasure map, the ancient shrine should not be that far away now. Though, as you make your way between trees, you sense a subtle change in the atmosphere. The jungle is quiet. It feels like several pair of eyes follow your every movement, careful not to let you know where their owners are. The whole area feels like it's holding its breath, waiting for your next move. Quite frankly, it makes your hair stand on edge, but if the local wildlife is afraid of you, that means it won't suddenly attack you. Probably.

No other incident is of note until you reach what appears to be an odd clearing. There, the rumored temple reveals itself in its full glory. It looks kind of like a pyramid, and while the stone is modest, it has obviously been polished thoroughly. All in all, it has withstood the test of time quite well!
Excited, you reach for the entrance, and are greeted by a single room. Four walls make a square, with glyphs you can't quite comprehend. However, your attention is drawn to a bona fide treasure chest in the exact center of the square room. There it is! The treasure you endured it all for! You close in on the chest, all senses in alert in case there are hidden traps, but no poisoned dart comes your way, no vicious trapdoor opens, no huge boulder is released. Huh.

The chest itself has the distinct sheen of old gold, and there is a lock, but nothing a few good modern tools can't handle.
Curiously, on the top is written, in somewhat recognizable language:
'O thou looking for riches, best the serpentine guardians and thou shall be granted your wish'
You look right, and look left, and look above, and even look under the chest, just to be sure. None of this 'serpentine guardians' seem to appear, so... I guess finders' keepers? You enthustiastically grab the chest, eager to take it home...
...and it doesn't budge.
At all.
Not even an inch, or I guess centimeter since you're from the civilized world and not the jungle itself.

Now that's gonna be a problem: you need to transport the chest at least back to the pilgrim camp, but it seems wayyyy too heavy for your and your Pokémon to simply carry it all the way there...

nightblitz42 can't stop here! How will you transport the chest?

"If we can't lift it, maybe the three of us can push or pull it instead?"
:decidueye: "It'll be tough work..."
:malamar: "Hope so -- I came here for a challenge."

Malamar will use Reflect to create a smooth, low-friction barrier between the ground and the chest.
Decidueye will use Grass Knot to create a rope out of grass and tie it around the chest. The three of us will pull it along.
Malamar will continue to use Reflect to create a path as we pull the chest along.

With the preparations complete, you begin to pull on the chest. The rope, while vegetal, is still solid enough to not break, and the chest comes off its base.
As you slowly start to drag it to the door, you hear a rumble.
The square on which the chest was resting just a moment ago is now... sinking into the ground? Suddenly, a hidden trapdoor opens on two walls, each one letting a Pokémon out! It seems like you've found the serpentine guardians after all!
Your Pokémon feel inspired!

Steelix looks like it wants to leave the chest to help Eelektross, but a complex series of hisses and clicks from the latter seem to persuade it to stay coiled where it is, though it does not seem particularly happy to do so.

Steelix is still flailing around, and Arceus knows a giant steel snake flailing about can get terrifying, especially in an enclosed space. However, it seems to be doing so less enthusiatically than before. The wall openings have closed, too. No other Pokémon should be able to come throught here, at least not for a while. It feels like this is the last obstacle standing before you and your treasure.
It's quite the big obstacle, granted.

:decidueye: "This is all I can do... I leave the rest to you, my compatriots."
:malamar: "It doesn't have to be this way, Joseph! Switch out, I'll take your place!"
:decidueye: "It's too late for that... Listen closely... I want you to use the money from selling the treasure, to... to build a children's hospital..."
"Hell no."
:decidueye: "Curses......"

The Steelix in front of you pauses briefly at the mention of a children's hsopital, but rears back anyway. It looks like you didn't convince it to abandon the trasure!

Steelix may be on its last legs (or lack thereof), but it's turned red! It's now moving much faster, though being giant and slow to begin with makes it a bit easier to track. Still, with power and speed, it is more formidable than ever!
You can notice the scratches on the steely surface, though. It's wounded, and it likely won't be able to keep up much more. Just one last puch, and...

:decidueye:"Oh, that got a reaction. Do these two understand speech?"
:malamar: "Maybe they can be bargained with, then."
"That'd be a relief -- I've gotten in waaay over my head here. I'm just trying to cover this month's electric and gas, I don't need a ten-ton chest of treasure. As for recompense, I'm sure we can do something to make your home a little more comfortable (for gosh sake, apparently you live in a literal hole in the ground)."
:malamar: "Boss, I don't think we need to compensate them if we beat them up for the treasure."
"Is that what this is about? I thought we were fighting for self-defense... Everything is happening so fast..."

With one last, defiant roar, the beast collapses at last. When the dust settles, you look around, anxious to see if reinforcements were on their way. But there's nothing. The temple is eerily still. It's almost underwhelming.
But hey! The treasure's here, at last! Shaking off your fears, you quickly heal your Pokémon and get back to the Reflect-Grass Knot method. At least it works, even if it's slow.
The walk back to the camp is quiet, too. No other Pokémon jump at you from the bushes. You can't even feel eyes like before you went into the temple. It's like the whole fauna is carefully avoiding you. Are you cursed? Or is it because you fell the guardians? Eh, no point in worrying about that. At one point, you think you caught a glimpse of a Morpeko looking at you before running away between the dense vegetation, but it happened so fast you're not really sure.

At last, after what feels like hours of laborious pulling, you get back to the pilgrim camp. You're thirsty, you're hungry, you've decided to avoid working out for a lifetime or two, but most importantly: you're excited. Finally, it's almost time to check the content in the chest!
One of the pilgrims has a few crude tools for lockpicking. Not the best, but you don't really feel like carrying the chest halfway through the continent anyway. You get to work.
The lock is well made, and quite sturdy, but eventually it comes off.
You look at your Pokémon. Your Pokémon look at you. You can feel anticipation filling the air.
You gulp.
It is time.
Slowly, you open the heavy chest.
...The lid resists, and you can feel some of your life force being siphoned! Maybe you really were cursed! Maybe the chest itself was a trap!
After a while though, the sensation stops. You manage to relax, as warmth returns to your arm, and quickly reassure your Pokémon that all is well.
The lid doesn't resist anymore, and you can open it quite easily now.
The chest is open.
Before your eyes, its contents reveal themselves, finally.
It contains...
