IMO the only meaningful way of defining whether something is socialist is the broadest umbrella definition: If it's something that people who called themselves socialists tried to create or achieve in pursuing socialism, it's a kind of socialism (because there are many, many kinds).
Worker's revolution? Socialism.
Ending child labor? Socialism.
Authoritarian communist governments? Socialism.
Unions? Socialism.
Social Democratic governance in capitalist countries? Socialism.
Bread Lines? Socialism.
Anarcho Syndicalist thinking? Socialism.
New Deal? Socialism.
Single Payer Healthcare? Socialism.
Worker Safety Laws? Socialism.
Weekends? Socialism.
Worker owned businesses? Socialism.
Anarchists? Much of the thinking behind it was done by socialists.
That's why socialism is popping up so much in the anarchy thread.
