Heya! Back with another RMT, I barely missed out on getting Kyurem reqs due to waiting till the last minute. I made reqs once before during the Gliscor test back in DLC1, but that was by yoinking a sheist broken Sneasler team made by kd458. I really wanted to try building something that'd be my own team, and see just how well my teambuilding skills had improved since then. Started out by making a simple grassy terrain core, which involved into something quite fun!
2. Teambuilding Process
+
This started out as a grassy terrain squad, with a very common core already. Rilla + Bolt cover each other quite well, with bolt greatly enjoying the recovery + ground neutrality from Grassy Terrain. Attacking both sides of the offensive spectrum while both giving the team very good priority options, it was a great way to start.
Great Tusk is a pretty simple addition, a good spinner with great offensive power and utility. Lefties + Grassy Terrain gives it pseudo-reliable recovery which is quite nice alongside an offensive Ice Spinner + Headlong Rush set.
Now here's where we get spicy, this starting core is quite weak to both ice and fairy types, with stuff like Kyurem, Iron Valiant, Weavile and Enamorus being very tough to deal with. Iron Crown is a neat pokemon because it can defensively check all of these, while also acting as an option that can outspeed + deal with all of them with a CM set, it also gives us a natural speed control option, outside of priority.
Garg is a mon I hadn't used in a while, but filled a hole I particularly needed to fix. Ghost types were especially strong into this, particularly Dragapult and Skeledirge. Garganacl greatly appreciates the rise of HDB Hex Dragapult, as it eats it alive and spreads salt cures for days, while also acting as a general SpDef Wall and win condition, who also greatly appreciates Grassy Terrain.
Dragonite was a great final fit, fills a bunch of defensive holes the team had, while also giving it an additional priority option in ESpeed. Mainly wanted this for a fighting, second ground switchin and a way to break down frail sweepers alongside Rilla and the situational Raging Bolt.
3. Team + Description
The Fool (Rillaboom) @ Choice Band
Ability: Grassy Surge
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 4 HP / 172 Atk / 80 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Grassy Glide
- U-turn
- Wood Hammer
- Knock Off
An extremely standard Rillaboom set, nothing super unique about it. Grassy Glide with Gterrain acts as a very strong priority in option, in combination with Tera Grass, OHKOing pretty much every frail Pokemon that doesn't resist. Wood Hammer is a similar deal, acting as a mega nuke option, while Knock is a great crippling tool against any unfavorable switchins like Corviknight, Skarmory and more. U-Turn simply acts as a pivoting option, to allow teammates to come in to appreciate the Grassy Terrain that Rilla provides.
The Chariot (Raging Bolt) @ Leftovers
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 88 SpA / 168 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 20 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Thunderclap
- Dragon Pulse
- Taunt
Messed around with a few different bolt sets, but ended up with this one. Leftovers + Gterrain recovery offers incredible recovery alongside CM, allowing you to wall most special attackers, and threaten KO's with a priority Thunderclap. Taunt is an interesting option to deal with bulky switchins to Bolt, like Clodsire, Ting-Lu and slow Gliscor, which otherwise check us quite well. Speed EV's are enough to outspeed Kingambit and pokemon that'd creep for Jolly, all while also outspeeding no Speed EV Gliscor. This set struggles a little bit with Fairy types that don't need to attack, like Hatterene and Setup+Encore Iron Valiant, but the team has other options against these mons.
Judgement (Great Tusk) @ Leftovers
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Ice Spinner
- Knock Off
- Headlong Rush
Great Tusk is sporting a fairly traditional set, I juggled between HDB and Leftovers, as Boots is usually my item of choice on Tusks, however I ended up finding the added recovery of leftovers a lot more useful in combination with terrain. We're running a simple max attack max speed jolly set that is able to hit Gliscor hard with Ice Spinner, while still being able to spin around. Headlong Rush > EQ simply for additional damage, but also so you don't get reduced damage in GTerrain. Tera Steel is opted to make us immune to toxic, all while removing our Grass and Fairy weakness, while also resisting dragon and ice, which is why I opted for it over Tera Poison.
The Emperor (Iron Crown) @ Booster Energy
Ability: Quark Drive
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 84 HP / 172 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 20 Atk
- Tachyon Cutter
- Calm Mind
- Psyshock
- Tera Blast
Iron Crown is a super nifty mon that I really wanted to try out, it has a few good attributes for a CM sweeper, mainly:
- 4x resistance to psychic moves, which allows to win CM wars against opposing psychics, due to resisting Stored Power and Psyshock quite heavily.
- Double Hit Tachyon makes for a great anti-lead against Glimmora and Ribombee, threatening them with a round 1 KO before being able to set hazards
- Is a great lure for steel types, which all fold to +1 Tera Blast Ground
Crown acts as a fantastic check to Iron Valiant, usually forcing it out quite well while burning it's Booster Boost, unless it ends up being SD+CC. Tera Ground + Tera Blast allows us to beat pretty much every steel type bar Corviknight and Skarmory 1v1, while also luring an Electro Shot from Archaludon to give us a free setup opportunity:
+1 172 SpA Tera Ground Iron Crown Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Excadrill: 500-590 (138.5 - 163.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 172 SpA Tera Ground Iron Crown Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 204 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Archaludon: 336-396 (90.3 - 106.4%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO
+1 172 SpA Tera Ground Iron Crown Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Kingambit: 404-476 (118.4 - 139.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 172 SpA Tera Ground Iron Crown Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Kingambit: 404-476 (100 - 117.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 172 SpA Tera Ground Iron Crown Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gholdengo: 380-450 (120.6 - 142.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 172 SpA Tera Ground Iron Crown Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Gholdengo: 380-450 (100.5 - 119%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 172 SpA Tera Ground Iron Crown Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 204 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Archaludon: 336-396 (90.3 - 106.4%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO
+1 172 SpA Tera Ground Iron Crown Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Kingambit: 404-476 (118.4 - 139.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 172 SpA Tera Ground Iron Crown Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Kingambit: 404-476 (100 - 117.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 172 SpA Tera Ground Iron Crown Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gholdengo: 380-450 (120.6 - 142.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 172 SpA Tera Ground Iron Crown Tera Blast (80 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Gholdengo: 380-450 (100.5 - 119%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Psyshock is quite nice as it allows us to beat special setup Pokemon, such as Raging Bolt, Latias, Volcarona (usually requires Tera), Primarina and Clefable.
The defensive profile also allows us to check a Rillaboom locked into Grassy Glide, a Kyurem that's using a Dragon/Ice move, Slowking-G and Deoxys-Speed.
The Tower (Garganacl) @ Leftovers
Ability: Purifying Salt
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Curse
- Salt Cure
- Protect
- Recover
I initially ran Rocks on this Garg over Curse, but ended up having a lot of issuees with the likes of Gouging Fire, Roaring Moon and ID+BP Zamazenta. Curse allows us to check all of them, all while becoming a terrifying setup threat, essentially 6-0ing stall on it's own due to Unaware Pokemon being weak to Salt Cure. We're running a standard SpDef set to check Dragapult hard, while also checking HDB Kyurem, Salt Cure is simply just the easiest button to click in the world and you can usually click it even if the opponent is already salt cured to catch a switch. Tera Fairy is opted to tank Specs Dracos from mons like Pult, Walking Wake and Raging Bolt, all while tanking dragon moves from Gouging Fire and resisting Knocks from Roaring Moon.
Strength (Dragonite) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Extreme Speed
- Fire Punch
- Dragon Claw
An interesting EQless Dragonite, initially ran Encore > Dragon Claw, but I found myself not really having that many issues with Kingambit due to all the priority + Fire Punch. Dragon Claw was opted to have a better time into dragons like Kyurem, Dragonite, Walking Wake, Gouging Fire and Raging Bolt, while Extreme Speed is standard priority with Fire Punch hitting any steel that isn't Archaludon. I've considered running Tera Fire to have a better matchup into Kyurem, but up to now Tera Normal has been working well.
4. Team usage tips
Lead:
We're usually going to be leading Rillaboom to get Grassy Terrain up early, but here's a general guide for proper leads against most structures:
Lead Rillaboom and just start Gliding, you'll OHKO any samurott that isn't sash, and you won't let Deo-S get more than a layer of hazards up. The SpDef EV's actually allow us to tank one Life Orb boosted Psycho Boost:
252 SpA Life Orb Deoxys-Speed Psycho Boost vs. 4 HP / 80 SpD Rillaboom: 289-341 (84.5 - 99.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
HARD LEAD Crown, no balls, you threaten an immediate OHKO and can usually just get a free CM up. These structures are usually hyper offensive and will probably rely on Gholdengo to beat you out, you can potentially get a 6-0 going if you CM, Tera Ground and beat Gholdengo down.
In most other cases you just lead Rilla and usually double/pivot to like, Tusk or Garg depending on the situation, you can potentially go immediate Raging Bolt against Torkoal suns if they lack a Hatterene.
Recognize when to use Tera:
The main thing with Tera Ground Crown is that it's pretty easily revenge killed by the likes of Rillaboom and Barraskewda, Teraing off rip to get a kill on stuff like Archaludon or grounds might not be worth. There's also many cases where a Tera Garg might actually be necessary as well, so analyze that off preview and try to figure out the holes that your offensive breakers can abuse.
5. Threat List
,
The team is fairly ice weak, these two in particular are a pain to switch into. Against Meow you usually have to lead Garg and Tera turn 1, and then we somewhat wall it, however Flower Trick + Gterrain deals a whole lot of damage. You can usually switch Iron Crown into it if it isn't using Knock, because it'll lose Stab + No Knock Off boost. Weavile is harder to switch into, but is a bit more dealable, as Garg can salt cure it, and you can revenge kill it easier with Iron Crown.
Both Specs and Tera Ice HDB variants are tough, you really have to gauge what set it is, usually by scouting with Garg, and then you can threaten it out with Iron Crown, we're luckily faster than it even without our Booster Boost.
Mon pretty much 6-0's us if we don't have Tera Fairy Garg ready to Curse up, we have to play extremely carefully around the treat of it coming out with ID+BP.
