Yes, yes I am, but New York is calling my name if they don't get Heatley by the end of the day
Though, Martin Havlat is still intriguing for somebody
I'm loving the Wild's offseason so far! We start with a first round pick that is 5'10" and weighs 180 pounds. I feel cheated by the reasoning our GM gave us for him, claiming the smaller defensemen that move the puck are the premier DMen of the NHL. Now we saw some decent contracts for DMen who move the puck today, but they just aren't going to be the best players on the ice ever. I know at pick 16 you can't ask for much, but the draft pick smelled of trying to appease the fans crying about "no Minnesotans on the Wild!!!!" When I think of top DMen (whether offensively defensively or both) in the league I immediately think of names like: Lidstrom, Niedermeyer, Pronger, Chara, Phaneuf, Bouwmeester, Green, etc. (I know I missed a lot of names, but you catch my drift). What do they all have in common? They all are 6'++ and generally weigh 195+ pounds. Smaller DMen do have roles in the NHL obviously, but to claim we took a prospect with a chance to be a top tier player baffles me when he doesn't even have the size of any of the top NHL DMen.
I might just be bitter because I go to the University of Minnesota and watched Schroeder play well and thought he could fit the offensive system our new GM is promising. He then convienently gets drafted by the Canucks (not much love for them from Wild fans). Recent UofM players have played well in college, but they have all made the leap and then some into the NHL recently (best example: Blake Wheeler - he had one great college year and the rest he was really just average. Another example is Phil Kessel). At least it is easier to name smaller forwards that can play well and be considered top NHL forwards.
edit: yep, signed with the Rangers
edit edit: and now the Wild are running out of offensive options to sign with our promised "offensive revolution." I think I'm going to have to buy the NHL TV package to watch every team but the Wild next year
