Here is an open letter we sent to the Stars organization:
My husband and I are from Arlington and have been Dallas Stars fans since you arrived here 15 years ago. Like most Texans, the Stars were my introduction to NHL hockey, and I was immediately hooked on the energy and excitement of the game as well as the dynamic personalities of the players. I've always been a proud fan of the team and organization but the events this week have completely changed my feelings and I'm ashamed and embarrassed at how the team has handled the Sean Avery situation.
Though I don't condone his actions, as a woman I was in no way offended by his comments. I do, however, find it difficult to watch this organization hide behind statements such as Tom Hicks' "We hold our team to a high standard and will continue to do so." This is from the same team that has made the scantily clad "Ice Girls" the main attraction for most of the males that attend your games. The comments I hear from them about these young ladies is far more vulgar than Avery's comment. And if that's not bad enough, I can't even go to the Dallas Stars Web site without running into the Ice Girls yet again, and as a bonus I get to see ads for a dating service with more scantily clad young ladies wearing nothing but undergarments.
So, I guess holding this organization to a higher standard includes objectifying women as long as they go along with it. I also find it disgusting to watch this team throw their teammate under the bus in an effort to take the blame off of themselves for their own poor performance this season. Even if Sean was a distraction and is disliked as it appears he was, this team could benefit from learning to use the words "no comment" a little more often. The comments made by players this week about Sean were classless and have made me lose all respect for them not only as hockey players but as men. What kind of person watches a teammate reach out for help and not only fails to offer support but continues to kick him while he's down ... that's classless. I understand a lot has happened that we're not privy to but don't insult my intelligence by blaming Sean for everything that's wrong with this team. If the team has been left with a black eye it's because of comments made by players such as Modano and Turco. I used to respect these guys but now I think they are "vile" and feel stupid for falling for their "classy" act for so long.
The watered-down brand of hockey that you guys have sold us the past few years is unacceptable. When the Stars first came here, we went to almost every home game but the past few years I wouldn't go even when I was offered free tickets, which was quite often. We've gone to a few games this year, the most recent 11/30 against Edmonton and it was finally getting fun again, even with a losing record. I told my husband how much fun Sunday was and we agreed that we should buy season tickets. That plan changed Tuesday when I heard the Stars bashing their teammate the way they did. Though Sean may not have had chemistry with the team, he was exciting to watch and made Dallas Stars hockey fun again. He works hard and gives 100 percent on the ice. He even had the backs of the same players that are now taking every opportunity to take a shot at him. Seriously, I'm tired of hearing them whine. If they have a problem with Sean, man up and take it up with Sean and keep it out of the media. We work hard and can't justify wasting our money on a group of players we no longer respect.
In closing, I would like to offer one more word of advice. Please stop reminding us of how classy you are. I can't remember the last time someone I regarded as classy had to tell me they were.
