The Everything NHL Thread

Not meaningless, a lot of playoff positions up for grabs still. Especially between Penguins, Flyers and Canes for home ice advantage in the first round.

Ahaha, Canucks win the division. After the 'uncatchable' lead the flames had. Ha! I just won 50 bucks from a bet at the beginning of the year in which I put my money on the 'Nucks winning the division title. :D

Will be cool to actually see the matchups start to take shape. Chicago/Calgary could be good but the Flames have really struggled against the Blackhawks this year :/ Hopefully they turn it up for an exciting series! I always love the 4vs5 series' the best, those teams usually seem to be the most even and it's hard to pick a favourite.

Adam V2, it helps when the flames spot you a month of consistent losing :P

honestly Chicago is most likely going to roll right through the flames, I woulda rather played columbus and with home advantage.

For my sake, I hope Chicago rolls through the flames and the rest of the playoffs.

I wouldn't get my hopes up there buddy, the west has at least 2 teams that are total ringers (wings and sharks) and the east is looking to have some nasty surprises too!

I wouldnt be too sure either, the Sharks have choked pretty badly this year and I dont know if you have been watching the Wings but they havent looked good either. I think if Chicago can win round 1 they have a good chance at going to the conference finals at the very least.

As per the last decade or so of playoffs, it is completely fair for me to say that momentum gained from the first round can carry you pretty fucking far.

Yeah, but it depends on how you win. If you sweep and the rest of the teams play 7 you are probably ok, but if they play 6 or 5 you may be fucked, depending on how physical the games are.

or if you happen to be playing a rival and beat them in a dramatic seven games you could go to the finals like the flames did once upon a time... :P

So many variables, anyone that says momentum isn't a factor is wrong though it's not scientifically anything legitimate.

Yeah, I agree. It will be interesting to see how the shit plays out so I guess all we can do now is wait and speculate. Also, Hossa was out of the last game and will miss the remaining two so...

First playoff wall of text! Let's see how these series will play out...

Eastern Conference
1. Boston Bruins v. 8 Montreal Canadiens
I don't like the way either team is playing right now, but I think Les Habs are falling faster. Bruins in 5.

2. Washington Capitals v. 6. New York Rangers
Two very hot teams going head to head. Should be a fun series to watch, if only for Avery and Ovechkin. It'll be a hard-fought series but with Washington having the Rangers' number most of the season, I'm gonna have to go with Ovechkin and co. Capitals in 6.

3. New Jersey Devils v. 6. Carolina Hurricanes
Brodeur is looking more like Budaj as of late, and these Canes are red hot. The "upset" of the round. I smell a sweep. Hurricanes in 4.

4. Pittsburgh Penguins v. 5. Philadelphia Flyers
Numbers might change by tomorrow, but I don't think home-ice advntage will decide this series. The Pens are very hot coming into the playoffs, and that will be enough to carry them over the Flyers in a hard-fought series. Penguins in 6

Western Conference
1. San Jose Sharks v. 8. Anaheim Ducks
Sharks are a bit shaky as of late, but they still have the skill to hold off the surging Ducks. Sharks in 6.

2. Detroit Red Wings v. 7. Columbus Blue Jackets
The Red Wings have a habit of winning a lot during the regular season before lying down for the last couple of weeks and having an early playoff exit. This is one of those years. Couple that with the fact that Columbus is one of the hottest teams coming in, and you have early reservations at the golf course for Detroit's finest. Blue Jackets in 5.

3. Vancouver Canucks v. 6. St. Louis Blues
Vancouver's play has picked up a bit lately, but an on-fire Blues squad is going to put an end to Sundin's hope for a Cup. Blues in 6.

4. Chicago Blackhawks v. 5. Calgary Flames
Arguably the best feel-good story this season, the Blackhawks look to create a storybook finish, starting with a victory over the underachieving Flames. They've had the Flames number so far this season, and I doubt that will change much. Blackhawks in 5.

Oh of course. Thanks Flames!

I'm getting into a playoff pool, but obviously before you pick players you have to pick the teams that you think can go far. But so far I've only picked one team as I plan on picking players from the 4 teams I think will meet in their respective conferences, with a little lean towards whom I think will go to the Cup Final and such.

West: Chicago. But even then there could be so much confusion and such as the West is so tightly packed (and with 2 'ringers' as said before in San Jose and Detroit). I might just play the fanboy and stick with Vancouver, but then I'd be betting against those 2 powerhouses ... Gahh.

East: I'm kinda thinking Washington, Carolina, or Boston. I had New Jersey in my head about a month or so ago, but they've slowly slipped out with the rise of Eric Staal, Cam Ward and co. I don't really want to just go with the popular vote and go with the Penguins as everyone is going to be trying to draft them. BUT, if I get a high enough pick that I can get one of the 'big two' (Geno and Sid) I'll go ahead and ride the wagon. :P

When picking a first pick, should I go with the Goalie from the team that I think will win Stanley or should I go with a high-scoring player from said team (or team that I think will go to the cup final)?

PS: Woooh! Playoffs finally here!

Honestly I think Wild are going to hit rock bottom next year Lemaire was the reason for there success and I doubt Gaborik will be back next year.
