The Everything NHL Thread

So since Sidney Crosby has been growing on me lately I've been trying to figure out why I hate the pens so much, and oh, I remember now!

I'd been given false hope with the good officiating in the last round and a half or so, I respect the idea of calling fewer penalties but man there was some obvious shit the refs opted not to call on the Pens (on of which led directly into a breakaway), sometimes I worry it is just me but no, both Pierre's funny ass and Edzo agreed on all of them and even Darren Pang and... Milbury's stupid ass, I think? were making fun of the no-call that led to Malkin's terrible breakaway. Here we go again...

EDIT: I really like Crosby whacking Maltby with his stick after the game ended, by the way. "qq he was making fun of me after the game ended", apparently. Still a baby. I knew there were reasons I didn't like him!

EDIT2: Interesting (to me) link on the Finals officiating linked from the Caps's owner's blog: http://nhl.fanhouse.com/2009/05/29/the-referee-report-stanley-cup-final-officials-announced/

All the more reason to want Red Wings to win. Fuck Crosby. I want Hossa's redemption.
I agree, Hossa needs his cup.

On a sidenote...I FINISHED MY FIRST BAP season offline with the Maple Leafs/Marlies. Ended up with some 93 points in 36 AHL games on 77 goals and 16 assists and 94 points in 49 NHL games with 79 goals and 15 assists. Interestingly enough I finished the season in the AHL??? and also won the Calder Cup and the Rocket's trophy in the NHL. Anyways, had a few offers for my sophomore season: Atlanta, New York Islanders, Toronto Maple Leafs and the team that doesnt belong in this list, Detroit. Needless to say, Ken Holland offered me the most money and a 3 year contract so here I am.

Fun facts, obviously starting off line 1 in the AHL. I have one game played with 4 goals and 1 assist for a league leading 5 points. This isnt just it though, check out this Red Wings roster.

On Defense for the wings we have:
Niklas Lidstrom
Brian Rafalski
Brad Stuart
Niklas Kronwall....okay so still the same top 4 impressive D core right? Right.
ALSO
Scott Niedermayer
Jay Bouwmeester...always knew he wanted out of Florida

On Forward:
Daniel Cleary
Pavel Datsyuk
Kris Draper
SERGEI FEDEROV!
Darren Helm (no surprise)
MARIAN HOSSA!
chad kilger who the fuck?
george laraque say what?
Kirk Maltby
Mikael Samuelsson
KEITH TKACHUK?
Henrik Zetterberg

NOW...lets take a sigh of relief at the wings still having Osgood but LETS ALSO laugh our asses off because he is the ONLY GOALIE ON THE ROSTER

I'm more excited about the NHL draft than the playoffs at the moment. Apparently the Islanders are pretty torn about the first overall pick (why the hell is Tavares's skating screwing him that badly), and if they take Hedman, there are talks that the Lightning are willing to trade it to the Leafs.

I might like a dynasty league, especially considering I would keep the same players regardless :p.

But isnt the draft the most fun part of the year?

And Malkin's "automatic" suspension is rescinded.

Come on Red Wings, show that even with the NHL meddling, you guys can still take it.

the refs mostly joined the winning team in game 2 but this article made me laugh a lot

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/05/31/malkin_no_suspension/

I enjoy this mostly because i haven't enjoyed an article on this site in what feels like years. I think we all knew this suspension wasn't going to happen, but it is pretty /eyeroll since, as the article points out, it is pretty much exactly why the rule exists to begin with, and is only being enforced because Malkin isn't 800 pounds.

Fortunately for future series this will hopefully be a learning experience for Ovechkin as he will now have carte blanche to gib the fuck out of Crosby the next time the Caps are losing to him since he, as a "skill player", is above suspensions.

What a fucking joke. Talk about playing favorites.

From NHL.com: Rule 47.22 states: "A player who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five minutes or at any time in overtime shall be suspended for one game, pending a review of the incident. The director of hockey operations will review every such incident and may rescind the suspension based on a number of criteria. The criteria for the review shall include, but not be limited to, the score, previous incidents, etc..."

Et cetera? Are you kidding me???

i wonder, if zetterberg jumps malkin at the end of game 2, does zetterberg get suspended...

Zetterberg's not that stupid so it's a moot point but I'd probably lean towards no as well. This is less of a Penguins conspiracy and more of a "good players" conspiracy. The fact that Malkin plays for Pittsburgh is more or less coincidental.

i was looking at it in a way where pittsburgh is the team down 2-0 and its looking to be a short series, made shorter if malkin isnt there

so if zetterberg does it, does the nhl suspend him to try to make the series closer, regardless if its pittsburgh or carolina or whoever on the losing end.

I see. Well, based on the Scott Walker punch, my answer still remains the same.. no, they probably wouldn't suspend Zetterberg.

Carl is right, I was a bit haste in my judgment. The NHL definitely isn't playing any favorites in these playoffs; rather, they've apparently completely burned the rulebook and then pissed on the ashes.

What a fucking joke.

I'd say they definately played favorites in some series.

Again, I'll harp on the calgary vs chicago series- a bad call against leopold in game 5 literally turned that game around, giving chicago the momentum to wrap things up nicely. Not to mention a penalty ratio of about 8:1 in about 4 of the games in that series- chicago demonstrated the next round that they certainly are not the disciplined team that people claimed they were (and hence did not get as many penalties).

I harp on that series because obviously I followed it closely.

The fact that rules dont exist in the NHL just leads me to not want to watch it anymore. I dont care if you are skilled or not, you do not get to have free reign. So basically what we can take of this is that if Pavel Datsyuk wants to McSorely Hal Gill then that is totally fine.

But if someone like matt cooke McSorelys someone like crosby, that's career ending.

The fact that Bertuzzi is still allowed in the NHL (Him being a model player pretty much after aside) is further demonstration that the NHL is fucked right up.

Look at that this way though:

Todd Bertuzzi had a 97 point season and some other high point seasons. While he wasnt an Ovechkin he was considered a world class power forward. Steve Moore, played for Harvard and then had okay seasons in the AHL and poor NHL performance and was likely a grinder type player.

So in the same sense that Datsyuk can stick Gill, why not Bertuzzi to Moore?

On a somewhat different note, why would Matt Cooke McSorely his teammate?

I just picked two names out of a hat, I don't even give a shit about the penguins roster because I loathe them.

Either way, it's disgusting that being a higher scorer means you can get away with that shit.
