The Everything NHL Thread

I think it'll be good for the Devils record to play in Lemaire's system with their ever decreasing roster of skilled players, since they seem to be following in Buffalo's system of 'don't re-sign anyone, ever, in any situation', but it's really too bad for Parise who is going to get bogged down in the trap even more than he was the last few seasons. He finally got to break out in year 2 of Sutter and now I worry for him, he's such a cocktease, potentially exciting, but in that system...

I just realized that with the cap decrease coming next season, Buffalo is actually sitting pretty with its roster. I wonder how much that played into the decisions Darcy Regier has been making, considering we just re-signed Matt Ellis for another year.

Buffalo is definitely backloaded with away games, especially that huge 7-game trip out west in January. We'll need to get points early in the season to have a cushion later on.

Canucks have a really brutal schedule in the 2010 part of the schedule, really feel for 'em - the Olympics are absolutely a going to make them their bitch. Good thing most of that division is so bad...

I am very annoyed WSH @ DET is so early in the season (Detroit's fourth game, I believe), as I will NOT be able to purchase a 7 dollar beer by about 2 weeks. This is likely for the best, but thanks a LOT Bettman!!

Not sure how many of you other than Carl and I check operationsports frequently, so I figured I'd link to an apparently exclusive vid of Be a GM mode in NHL 10 they got: http://www.operationsports.com/videoview.php?id=456

Highlights:

Fantasy draft returns! And there was much rejoicing.

You have rep of sorts with other teams which seems to go up and down based on good and bad offers. I assume the teams on the ice will be a factor here too, but nothing in the vid shows it.

You can upgrade your staff to do some ridiculous sounding things like find out about trade offers you're going to receive before they arrive!(?), upgrade your scouts so they actually go places other than Canada(you need to upgrade for this? You can tell the game is made in Canada...), among other things. Kinda neat though: "This is just a rumor but I've heard the New York Rangers(tm) are finalizing a deal with either Chicago or Montreal"

(it's double funny how theres comments about that (Gomez trade) and in the draft how Toronto won't accept the trade offered for Luke Schenn, lol)

The prospects game we were excited about being in BAP is a big factor in GM mode as well apparently, as you get to see the star prospects on the ice instead of just dealing with the numbers only interface we've gotten in previous years.

You can offer/receive offers from other GMs of players and picks at the draft, and similar things on trade deadline day to emulate real GM work which is exciting since the former has obviously been impossible in the past and in the later enemy GMs haven't seemed to factor in contract length at all so that'll be a fun change, especially if it carries over to BAP to make your AI GM less retarded.

Also you can get fired and have to switch teams in an interface that seems similar to BAP (since apparently you have an agent getting you contracts...), though it's definitely a bigger deal here, I imagine. Realism could potentially bite there...

I'm excited enough about the gameplay changes that I'm not sure I want to jump to the sidelines right away, but this'll be a fun diversion at some point!

I don't think we need to "draw interest" for our league since we pretty much already know who will be in it! The whole reason our leagues are so successful is that people actually care, I dont want to advertise to people who dont get that we are SERIOUS and will join thinking it will be a fun little thing to do!

i could start a "post to confirm your spot" type thing

Jackal
Teifu
Carl
gr33n
aldaron
Psycho
Articuno64
Vineon
WER
CaptainKishimoto

thats a good 10 to start, then zerowing, DM (please play!), moi??? nah he sucks even though he does play nhl'09 we have an open spot or two i guess!

Alright, I'll have Équipe Québec make a return to the Smogon League. I'll manage with whatever rules we end up having.

I know zerowing will want to play, and I think Justin mentioned he'd be up for giving it a shot this year if we need a twelfth, too. I actually wouldn't mind bumping up to 14 if we have the interest too, since having more players rostered wouldn't be the worst thing in the world and it'd be interesting to mix things up a bit...

Speaking of mixing things up - I know we've talked about it a lot and there seems to mostly be a consensus for doing it, but are we doing keepers? And if so are we doing it exclusively or simultaneously with a normal league? I'd be fine either way but I know we've chatted about it a bunch and haven't really gotten anywhere...

Should probably figure out any stat/roster slot changes now, too, since I know we usually debate about that.

Definitely using my EASHL captain veto (lol) on moi though, pretty sure people who draft Carter, Datsyuk, and Malkin at C and then don't play all damn season except to make a ridiculous trade he got talked into signing for that we had to veto don't get to play!

I use my EASHL player veto too. Trust me lol, we figured out it doesn't work.

On another note the GM factor sounds pretty fucking fun.

If we are playing NHL 10 together and we need a spot filled, I can do one of the following things (think of this as a self-scouting report):

Offense - Center. Specialties as a two-way player/forechecker. Good passing game, not so good shooting game. Would rather pass than shoot, even when I have the shot. 7/10

Defense - Right defense. My "default" position this year. Decent at stopping "cheesers", preventing plays from happening, checking. Cannon from the blue line. Have a tendency to hold on to the puck a little too much in my own zone. 8/10

Goalie - Needs the most work, but I'm better than many of the other options we have here. Good at stopping most cheese, though I still have trouble adapting to cross-crease one-timers. Mostly good at shutting down angles, although a sniper can take care of lapses. Confidence and performance suffer as more goals are scored on me. 6/10

As some of you guys have played with me you can confirm/deny some of these assessments if you think they're not right.

As for the draft, I would DEFINITELY be up for a keeper league. Perhaps using the following rules:

- First season, random draft (as normal).
- Subsequent seasons, draft order determined by season finish.
- Three player "keeper" limit.
- Draft picks may be traded.

This sounds perfect to me. I vote this. Are we going to need like a lottery or something for the bottom 3 teams to avoid tanking, though? Or since we're all friends can we just go by the honor system?

I think the honor system is a key and something we can probably rely on - if people obviously aren't trying or are losing on purpose it's no different than the type of streaming we don't allow - they're not likely to be the ones controlling the team they cheesed in the subsequent year, if you catch my drift. I'd really prefer more like 5 keepers (which is still only one at every position) but other than that it's definitely fine by me.

My problem with having 5 keepers is the (admittedly unlikely) scenario that someone manages to snag, say, Brodeur, Crosby, Ovechkin, Iginla, and Luongo. Even if the rest of their players are Islanders-caliber, they're gonna be winning a lot of games. I think having 3 would be a little better.
