The Flaws of Baton Passing

The way I see it, Baton Passing is a very broken (in a good way) concept. All Pokemon have flaws, and the ability to fix those flaws and do more is just great. This lead me to make a Baton Passing team and I realized the strategy has a hell of a lot of holes in it. For example (or examples), roar, taunt, haze, priority moves, choice abusers, and just insanely fast and powerful Pokemon in general screw over Baton Passing teams. I have tried my best to patch up those flaws a bit, and this is the team I have come up with. It works insanely well, although I'll admit I haven't ran into any serious obstacles yet. So without any further ado, I give you my team!

Ninjask@PetayaBerry
Speed Boost
Jolly
252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Spe

- X-Scissor
- Substitute
- Swords Dance
- Baton Pass

Description: This little guy (bug) is possibly the only reason the words Baton Pass mean anything to me. With the ability to pass 3 stats, it has to be one of (if not) the best Baton Passing leads in the game.

Purpose: To be a Baton Passing lead and give me the ability to pass Speed, Attack, and Special Attack effectively.

EV's: The Speed EV's are to out speed some of the faster leads and some various scarf abusers. The HP EV's are for healthier subs, but to be honest it doesn’t matter because Ninjask wont survive anything anyway.

electivire.png

Electivire@LifeOrb
MotorDrive
Adamant
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

- Thunder Punch
- Ice Punch
- Cross Chop
- Earthquake

Description: When I read "hits 13 of the 17 types super effectively" I immediately knew that with a Swords Dance and some Speed boosts under his belt, that Electivire would be the ultimate physical asset for my team. He has taken out entire teams after a passed Swords Dance, and is my paralysis absorber because of motor drive.

Purpose: To be the physical sweeper every team needs. It is to be used mainly with Ninjask, as its not that great on its own.

EV's: Jolly over Adamant because I think Speed is almost always preferable over power on sweepers, and the EV's are standard. Life Orb picks up where Adamant left off. Expert Belt is an option, but since I run Jolly over Adamant, I prefer the extra power. Taunt does nothing, and since most Roar users are slow, Electivire will get an easy KO.

dragonite.png

Dragonite@YacheBerry
Inner Focus
Jolly
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

- Dragon Dance
- Fire Punch
- Earthquake
- Outrage

Description: The go to guy (dragon) if my Baton Passing strategy fails. He will almost always get a Dragon Dance off thanks to Yache Berry, and can take down entire teams thanks to the coverage its move set provides and STAB Outrage is absolutely deadly.

Purpose: My reasoning is this: If Garchomp uses Swords Dance, and Dragonite uses Dragon Dance, who is better prepared for the sweep? Anyway, its purpose is to be the physical sweeper that can be called upon if Baton Passing Fails.

EV's: Standard really. Yache for survivability, Jolly to make it faster after a Dragon Dance, and if someone roars it out (stealth rock is a problem...) I'll try to KO it with one of my moves and with Dragonite’s great attack, KO'ing something isn't hard at all.

Timid
4 HP / 252 Sp.Atk / 252 Spe

- Tri Attack
- Dark Pulse
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt

Description: The Special core of my team that will most definitely OHKO anything that doesn't resist it. It is to be used with Ninjask for Speed and a slight boost in Special Attack, and with a ridiculous 160 power special move, Choice Specs, a Special Attack boost (like it needs one) and a Speed boost, it will hit really hard (and that is the understatement of the century)

Purpose: To be used with Ninjask for the Special Sweep. It handles a lot of my teams weaknesses well, and is VERY fun to use.

EV's: Again, standard. Choice Scarf was an option, but since it is being used with Ninjask, it doesn’t need the scarf. Taunt doesn't affect it, and roaring this out is like signing a death wish (unless the opponent is faster which is seldom with today’s common Roar/Whirlwind abusers.

gengar.png

Gengar@FocusSash
Levitate
Timid
4 HP / 252 Sp.Atk / 252 Spe

- Destiny Bond
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt

Description: Standard Gengar, and my mandatory revenge killer. That being said, it has great Special Attack and Speed, and since Ghost and Fighting hits everything neutrally, it just makes an overall great Pokemon.

Purpose: To be used with or without a Stat boost makes it the Special Sweeper oriented go to guy (ghost). It serves many a purpose, from revenge killing to status inflicting to being a Special Sweeper.

EV's: For the umpteenth time, standard EV's. Life Orb for extra damage. Focus Sash is of no use since it will often have Calm Mind's passed to it, making it rare that a special attack will OHKO it.

celebi.png

Celebi@LiechiBerry
Natural Cure
Bold
132 HP / 252 Def / 128 Sp.Def

- Calm Mind
- Baton Pass
- Recover
- Thunder Wave

Description: This thing is absolutely great, and after 2 Calm Minds, it makes a sturdy defensive and special defensive wall. It's also my secondary Baton Passer and status inflictor/absorber.

Purpose: This thing does so much for my team! It walls, it inflicts paralysis, it does damage. and it Baton Passes.

EV's : Finally, a non standard set. No speed EV's because of Thunder Wave, so I put the EV's into Defensive purposes. Bold and 252 Def EV's make sure it will survive a physical hit, and Calm Mind takes care of any special threat. Recover is to heal after I have taken some damage, but mainly its just there to tick people off (jk). Taunt requires a switch and I can attempt to paralyze potential Roar users.

Well that’s that, so well, RMT!

U-Turn is useless on Ninjask for two reasons:

1) You won't pass the stat ups, nor any Substitute which Baton Pass does.
2) Well, Ninjask learn Baton Pass and X-Scissor, and both is superior to U-Turn.

It isn't even worth it for scouting purposes, as Baton Pass will do the exact same thing. X-Scissor will do more damage if that's what you're looking for.

Smeargle is very important to include in a Baton Pass team. Ingrain will prevent you from being phazed away, and Smeargle is the only Pokémon in-game who can learn Ingrain and Baton Pass. Mr. Mime is handy too, as it will block Roar and Perish Song due Soundproof. I also don't believe four sweepers is necessary. You should definitely focus on handling some threats besides building a chain. General bulky Pokémon with Baton Pass and useful support would fit really well I belive, but then again, I'm no expert on Baton Pass teams.

Keep in mind that you should prevent your BP Pokémon from being stopped completely by Taunt. You should ALWAYS run an attackmove, as a Pokémon with Taunt would ruin your chain completely if they're faster then you.

So how exactly will you handle Gyara? He will just Taunt and DD to outspeed your pokemon and start rampaging through your entire team (Celebi can't do anything if taunted).

This team doesn't like D-E at all if you didn't manage to get a couple of speed boosts somehow.

PorygonZ is just over the top for this team, especially if you're passing boosts to it and then you get locked on Tri Attack when a ghost switches in. You could probably use a Taunt user like Scizor or Gliscor who can pass Agility in case Ninjask gets smash'd by Stealth Rock.

This team is easily handled by Taunt and Stealth Rock. You should use Umbreon>Electivire, as he can pass Wishes, Taunt, and even pass Mean Looks, allowing Dragonite to set up on some grass type or something.

EDIT: I know it is standard, but Jolly is pointless on Dragonite, unless you plan on fighting a lot of Jolteon and Aerodactyl, tho outrunning that damned HP Ice Crobat is nice too!
