The Forgotten Turtle - Blastoise Discussion

yo im a blastoise user the best moveset ill have to say is :

Blastoise@ leftovers
1.Aqua Ring
2.Rain dance/protect
3.Ice beam
4.Surf

this is a move set that has gotten me many wins from my Blastoise.this set never fails me.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT QUOTE THE FIRST POST. I beg you, edit your post and get rid of the filler garbage.

On your set you'll probably be 2HKO'd before Blastoise can take advantage of Aqua Ring/Rain Dance (Plus Rain Dance is asking for an opponent to use Thunder), because Blastoise does not get swift swim to benefit from Rain and does not have excellent HP to benefit from Aqua Ring, so it's useless.

To be honest, your and Hypnotists' movesets seem a little bit too stall-esque. I think it was Surgo that mentioned a week or so ago that most Pokemon won't last more than 3 rounds in play before they're either KO'd or need to switch- Blastoise is no exception.

On the Toxi-coat set that Hypnotist made, Toxic is sort of redundant, even when paired with Protect- here is the most likely scenario:

Turn 1:
You toxic opponent.
Opponent attacks Blastoise for whatever damage.
(Turn order can and probably will be reversed, most OUs outspeed Blastoise)
You recover HP from Leftovers

Turn 2:
You (predictably) use protect.
Opponent does whatever, possibly even switches.

Turn 3:
You have to either predict a physical or special attack, and use Counter/Mirror Coat accordingly. If you're somehow magically not KO'd, you either OHKO back, or get KO'd and have done essentially nothing but uselessly poisoned an opponent.

It's depressing, I know, but stalling is becoming a last-gen trend.

Yeah, you're probably right. And for that very reason I edited my post to put surf in. And yeah, if Blissey switches in, I'm probably going to be walled and stuff by Blissey. Meh, lol, like I said, I really am not feeling creative at the moment. I'm sure I can come up with something better later, though, you guys have pretty much mentioned the best sets. Lol.

Sorry for not noticing you put in Surf, I never checked back there. Surf would definitely be a good replacement for Toxic, because you can take advantage of Torrent after Countering/Mirror Coating.

Yeah, unfortunately the best sets have pretty much been mentioned already. Blastoise could be a lot better if he had more moves to take advantage of (especially on the Special side), but oh well.

Meh, I wouldn't check back either. Lol. Surf being a replacement for Toxic, I guess, lol. Man, Blastoise brings me memories. xD I remember one of the first teams I made revolved around Shedinja (Umbreon, Mean Look Baton Pass, Blastoise, Haze, Mirror Coat, Rapid Spin, and a Breloom with Sunny Day. xD) I was such a noob back then. But meh, w/e lol. I actually think I did manage to beat some teams. I eventually ended up making a team that had 1 OU (Skarmory), 2 UUs (Mantine, and Yanma or was it NU?), 1 NU (Roselia, I love it so much I'm going to use Roserade now) and 2 BLs (Jynx and Dugtrio). It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, I actually kind of like those types of teams rather than going all OU on people. Lol, even if OU teams are better, it's still fun to own OUs with NUs and stuff. x)

i like the "mixtoise" set you posted Yoshi King. i really don't want to use my B-Toise as a tank or pure utility, but this set reminds me of the good old days... haha. is a neutral nature the way to go though?

Thanks! I'm glad someone thought it looks good. If you can predict well+hit for super-effective damage, it really does pay off.

Personally I think a neutral nature is the way to go- there's just no other alternative:

A minus attack nature will limit Earthquake's damage pretty significantly even on a SE attack. This is especially crucial for Neutral or NVE damage if you mispredict- if you have a neutral nature you should still do moderate damage

A minus defense nature won't allow Blastoise to take physical hits of say, a Gyarados that gets off a Dragon Dance. Blastoise is able to take one hit (sans a critical hit) which allows it to either Haze or Roar. (I'm actually beginning to wonder if haze actually IS useful. Basically if you Haze and can't counter-KO, they'll just set up again. But if you Roar, the versatility of Mixstoise should allow you to still hit for at least neutral damage if you for some reason don't want to switch. Maybe I should switch out Haze for Roar?)

A minus Sp. attack nature is just stupid- Blastoise relies on Surf and Ice beam, and the physical replacements are just not worth it (Avalance and Waterfall/Aqua tail). This played a part in deciding whether I was going to go all-out physical or all out special- basically with only one attack type (special/physical) you're going to get walled by Blissey/Uxie/Cress(Special) or Snorlax/Gliscor/whatever (Physical). With Mixtoise you always have an option. Of course, you need to settle for the mediocre attack stats, but with Roar you can drag out something that can potentially counter.

A minus Sp. defense nature hurts a lot since most grass/electric attacks are still special-based and will be hitting Blastoise the most hard. It sort of works in tandem with the Defense stat.

A minus speed nature will mean Blastoise won't be able to outspeed anything in the base 70's to mid-80's range, which can really be of help.
