For years, we've had this back and forth. A tale as old as time. Countless discussions in the UU Discord. Countless r/stunfisk posts. Countless throwaway talks in the UU Room on PS!, all leading up to this moment. Now, we'll put it to rest. Respond to this form to give an answer to the long-standing debate;

Which Pokemon is the UU GOAT?

I've been playing since ORAS and since that time Cobalion has always been a solid pick. It never was the best of the best (even tho you could say it peaked in SS meta) but it was able to cemantle itself threw so many metagames and generations that I can not think about another GOAT than this Pokémon in UU.
 
I think objectively it has to be Cobalion (which is a shame because that mon is super ugly). Picked it as my #1, with Nidoqueen at #2 for many, many generations of UU viability and sometimes excellence, and Scizor at #3 for a shorter UU resume in terms of generations but absolutely killing it every time it ends up in UU. I was very surprised to not see Tentacruel among the choices, though - for me it stands out for many UU presences all the way back to RBY, and while it hasn't always been the best in UU, it almost always does something useful and unique in it, whether that be Wrapping, SD sweeping, spinning away hazards, or resisting many combinations of offensive types that few other Pokemon can, namely Water + Fighting, Water + Fairy, and Steel + Fire, among many others.

Since Gen 6, Bat has been a consistent fast and bulky pivot, and with taunt, toxic, super fang, roost, defog, u-turn, and brave bird. This thing always had a ton of utility in checking fighting, fairy, and grass types, and tons of utility moves including good hazard control with defog or taunt.

I think it started to suffer more with 4MSS once Gen 8 arrived as more powerful mons dropped, but it still was a decent hazard answer and could run some stallbreaker sets.

#1 choice is definitely Cobalion though let's not play here

At least for Gen 9..

Name one role on a team it cannot fill. You'll one day be crushed by choice band Tornadus-Therian.

Chip means nothing when the regen keeps it topped up.

One of the few mons in Gen 9 that have multiple workable sets and it doesn't even need to be running max speed. Just enough to outpace Orgepon-Cornerstone is a great start.

Hello I Would Like To Comment On The Proposal Raised Regarding Cobalion And Would Like To Use These Fine Points Raised By The Above Users To Reference My Passion Of How Bad This Boy Is In The Underused.

As I Have Made Clear, I Believe Cobalion Is Not A Good Pokemon. It Is Simply Garbage Straight From Trash Can. I Do Not Believe The Current A Rank Reflects The True Nature Of This Beast And Believe A Drop Down To A- Or Even B+ Would Be Better.

The Only Thing I Will Admit To The Truth Is That Cobalion Has An Acceptable To Above Average Defensive Typing. The Coveted Steel Type Is a Fine Characteristic In The Tier Which Many Pokemon Would Envy To Attain In Their Self.

However, One Must Ask Themselves Why Exactly This Boy Would Be Used Above The Competition. As A Defensive Steel Type, It Does Not Check Much Else That It's Better Steel Comrades In The Tier Do. What Advantages Does This Truly Have? You Can Make A Passable Pivot Out Of This Trash With Rocky Helmet And Punish A Couple Of Non Trashes Such As Scizor... But Outside It Then It Finds The Presence On The Team Redundant. In My Experience In High ELO Play Laddering, I Would Only Envisage This Being Usable On Offence/Bulky Offence Teams As A Stealth Rocks Abuser And Not Much Else. It Is Simply Outclassed For Most Of Its Existence By Much Less Sewage.

Firstly, It Hits Like A Mash Potato And No Team Is Seriously Going To Be Hurt By This. Swords Dance May Upgrade The Noodle Attack To Passable Levels But The Problem Is So Many Teams Are Prepared For Bigger Beasts Such As It's Donkey Cohort Terrakion And Scizor, That Cobalion Has No Hope In Breaking Past These. It Has No Recovery To Expand It's Defensive Niche So It Will Nearly Always Die Without Doing Much Of Considering In The Battle. Terrakion And Krookodile Are Simple Better Offensive Stealth Rock Setters... Terrakion Can Muscle Past Strong Walls A Lot Better And Krookodile In My Esteemed Opinion Has More Utility With Intimidate, Pursuit Trapping Broken Beasts Such As Latias, And Being Immune To The Volt Switch...

Please... Drop This Almost Useless Boy Where It Belongs Or Just Let It Drop To RarelyUsed Where It Very More Belongs...
 
Torn-T literally is the lando-t of this tier, it just is so easy to fit and just does so much that while cobalion is consistently fantastic, Torn-T has also been every time it has dipped down here.
 
tornadus-therian absolutely! It fits in any team in the tier. pivot+regen and his movepool allows to do anything in the tier
 
Cobalion without a doubt.


Has been UU since its inception. That remained relevant and competent for 4 consecutive gens, consistently surviving the power creep while doing the same roles very reliably. Pivoting, setting up rocks, checking extremely important mons throughout plenty different metagames. Cant help but respect it, it is just a very complete and useful mon. Probably at its worst nowadays, but hardly useless.

Id say this mon perfectly defines UU to me.


2nd is definitely Slowking. IMO, the history of UU as a whole is tied to this mon very tightly. This mon isnt number 1 mainly cause it hasnt been as consistent as Cobalion in my eyes, but lets see: Gen 2 relevant, Gen 3 very relevant, Gen 4 it was NU but very useful by UU standards. Gen 5 also RU but very useful as well, similar venue in Gen 6. Gen 7 is where it vanished mainly cause Slowbro is UU, but gen8 and gen9 brought it back to relevancy thanks to teleport / chilly reception. Excellent defensive glue that has found its uses as a pivot or wincon very consistently.


3rd is probably both Nidos, I think Nidoking and Nidoqueen should share the same place, they have gone through similar roads, just that the bulkier profile of Nidoqueen has been more preferable throughout the gens. Sheer force revived these mons, making them very scary breakers with pretty attractive defensive and offensive profiles.


4th is probably Scizor in my eyes. Dont think anything has had such an oppressive grip in the tier as Scizor did during Gen 7 UU. Absolutely vicious. Has remained relevant on the 3 gens with biggest power creep (now OU but it will very likely return before the gen ends). Just for its reign of terror Id say it is one of the mons to (dis)grace UU ever


5th is Crobat 100%. Tornadus-Therian has no voice in this discussion, it is a mindless pivot but it is only UU cause of the insane power creep. Crobat has been doing the bulky pivot role for generations. At its best in current ORAS UU imo, solid in gen 5, definitely at its worst on Gen 7 but Id say bullying the omnipresent amoonguss has its weight, then heavy duty boots made it plenty relevant on good teams in gen 8. Good mon and very useful altogether.
