The Next Best Thing v2 - Latios

Voting is now closed and the winner is Vertex's set. This set will be added in the v2 archive featured in the second post of the thread whenever JoeyBoy is back (I didn't open a new thread because I will host this thread temporarily)

The next subject is the Smile Ghost Pokémon, Gengar!

Gengar (M) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Taunt

This is a really cool set that I've been using a bit on a Custap Skarmory team recently which Co5ta suggested while it was built. This guy works sort of like a standard gengar what with Shadow Ball and Focus Blast to kill his familiar enemies, but the last 2 slots shake things up a bit. Thunderbolt is a cool choice for a few reasons, the biggest one being that it can score a 2hko on Tentacruel without any SpDef evs [so the standard, 48.9% - 57.69%, while my sand and hazards can make the job easier, the hazards from custap skarm being especially beneficial in the rain to potentially preserve a 2hko]. Thunderbolt is also pretty cool because it allows Gengar to hit Skarmory a lot harder, if you ever need to, along with any other assorted Water/Flyings and I guess if you need to do a decent amount of damage to Scizors without risking a miss, then you have Tbolt. Finally there's Taunt, which is what makes this set so baller, it can shut down a ton of stuff on stall and makes excellent use of the Spikes, it stops any SpDef Hippowdon, Skarmory, Gastrodon, Blissey/Chansey from healing up on it and proceeding to wall your team, benefiting any of your Pokemon that are countered by those 3 and whatever else wants to recover on a Gengar. Overall this is a great set when used in conjunction with a Custap Skarmory, or really any Spiker, to break apart stall teams thanks to its powerful arsenal of attacks and ability to shut down defense's ability to recover, via Taunt.

Gengar @ Life Orb
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Destiny Bond
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Thunder
I've been using this Gengar set on a Rain team of mine and it works really well. Life Orb boosted Shadow Ball and Focus Blast hit extremely hard and have great coverage together. Thunder is really useful as it OHKOs the Water types that can normally take a Shadow Ball including Politoed, Keldeo, and Gyarados and does a nice 80.8 - 95% to 252 HP / 0 SpD Tentacruel, which is an OHKO about half the time with Stealth Rock up. The other interesting draw of this set is Destiny Bond. I'll use Destiny Bond against things like Ferrothorn if I don't want to risk the Focus Blast miss, that can give my team trouble and I don't want it setting up too many hazards. Usually Ferrothorn will Gyro Ball in fear of letting Gengar getting up a free Substitute, and the tradeoff is usually worth it. This Gengar works well in that it can hit both extremely hard and provide support for the rest of the team by Destiny Bonding a troublesome Pokemon.

Gengar (M) @ Black Sludge
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Substitute / Thunderbolt
- Will-o-Wisp

I still can't understand why Gengar WoW is not on smogon analysis, he is Alakazam best partner. His goal is to bait pokemon like ScarfKion / Scizor / Jirachi / Tyranitar on the switch (or behind a sub) and creeping them with a nice burn, making them a lot less threatening for your team and especially for Alakazam like I said before. Thunderbolt can be used over subsitute even tho i'm not a big fan of it, but killing Tentacruel / Skarmory is always a good deal on Hyper offensive teams I guess.

iPod post:

Gengar @ Expert Belt
Trait: Levitate
Nature: Timid
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Icy Wind
- Thunder / Hidden Power (Fire) / Will-o-Wisp

Gengar can effectively remove Garchomp / Lamdorus-T from play while hitting choice spinners really hard. In addition, FB hits a hell of a lot harder and finds itself, with hazard support, scoring more OHKOs than before. The reinforced Shadow Bsll hit Jellicent and Celebi that sometimes think it can shrug it off as well. Being able to reduce speed and hit Donphan is pretty neat in itself and the lure simply works. Please do try it!

I shall name this set: Swaggar
Gengar @ Black Sludge
Trait: Levitate
4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Swagger
- Foul Play
- Focus Blast / Shadow Ball

Drop a sub, hit the unsuspecting foe with a Swagger, spam Foul Play. Decided to run Focus Blast instead of Shadow Ball to still do damage to Blissey/Chansey, Heatran, and Ferrothorn but if you want to keep a STAB move, Shadow Ball can still be used.

That seems to be incredibly outclassed by Sableye and Liepard. They have Prankster and can set up Subs/Swagger before most Pokémon have a chance to do anything in return. Why would you use that set on Gengar over them?

Surprise factor isn't enough in itself to warrant a set. It must be effective even if the opponent knows it is coming, and that set is generally outclassed by Sableye or Liepard that can simply do it better.

Gengar @ Focus Sash | Levitate
Timid | 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe | 0 Atk
Counter | Destiny Bond | Shadow Ball | Focus Blast

Okay, so this set is pretty much not on-site, but needs to be on-site, or I am just sayign stupid stuff, but I assure you this set is a good spinblocker. Counter + Destiny Bond pretty much takes out 1-2 Pokemon almost all the time. Focus Sash helps achieve this goal, and Shadow Ball is there, so you can spinblock Starmie, and Focus Blast is coverage. You can run Taunt or Thunder over Focus Blast though, and Taunt is Taunt, so ye, and Thunder is if your Tentacruel crazy. Hidden Power Fire is cool for Forretress too. Obviously, you'll want Stealth Rock off for Counter to work, but be careful, since this set is becoming more common every minute, along with Choice Scarf. I run 4 Def so I have a chance to live a Psyshock (lol 81.25%). 0 Atk IVs is for reducing confusion damage, and a lesser extent, Foul Play damage. Timid is needed, since this set needs all the Speed it can get.

Nova

It allows Gengar to beat its usual counters by bringing them down with DBond, as well as hitting Tenta hard, and helping its teammates

Damn i discovered a great gengar set yesterday, i will post it after the voting is done or in the "underrated set" thread maybe, it's really worth it !

Voting for VN. btw
