Well Freak of Nature here, with yet another RMT. This team was inspired by hours of boredom exploring the strategy dex. Latias was on the curve of being banned And I needed something to fill her role on an old team of mine. I stumbled into the BL section and started to read on Raikou. I realized how it could fill a Latias role but in a more offensive way. So a few weeks ago I decided to do a Raikou team. I decided to post this RMT because my team isn’t going anywhere, and it’s stuck around 1112 CRE, which isn’t good enough. I decided to do this RMT as a 4th generation retirement and to fix it up before the 5th generation changes things to much to make it useless. This may not be the best RMT, but I hope its enough. So without further ado, The Outcast:

Ankylosaur
Torterra @ Occa Berry
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 Atk, 220 SAtk, 36 S.Def
Nature: Naughty (+Atk. –S.Def)
- Stealth Rock
- Leaf Storm
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide

This set has always been one of my favorites. Not only is Torterra just beastly by looks, in the lead role he has some very special abilities. His strategy is simple, Stealth Rock when there is time, and kills off the lead. This set goes to Delko from the creative movesets thread. This thing has a chance to OHKO 7 out of 10 extremely common leads. When I was deciding on which lead I wanted, I didn’t want something normal. After getting bored of the Metagross lead, I wanted something that was very uncommon that was still very effective. Torterra fits this perfectly like no other does. This is one of my most effective leads I have ever user, because of its unpredictabiliy. While most would expect to see a pure physical set, this opts for the surprise of hitting hard with a stab Leaf Storm. Team support wise he does exceedingly well . Him and Flygon take thunderbolts and rock attacks directed toward Gyarados. In return Gyarados takes fire attacks. Metagross takes the ice attacks. In return he takes ground attacks for Metagross. After the leaf storm drop, starmie and friends may switch in. That gives Raikou an easy time taking the unboosted Ice Beam or surf, and sometimes a free calm mind. To show how he really works, these are damage calcs that Delko put together showing his effectiveness.

Changes: I am happy with Torterra, so no

What to do against opposing leads:

Heatran: Earthquake = 186.4% - 219.8% (with Shucka Berry = 93.2% - 109.9%)
Infernape: Earthquake = 144% - 170%
Metagross: Earthquake = 69.2% - 81.3%
Roserade: Earthquake = 97.7% - 115.3%
Jirachi: Earthquake = 88.1% - 103.6%
Azelf: Leaf Storm = 80.4% - 94.8%
Hippowdon: Leaf Storm = 85.7% - 101.4%
Smeargle: Leaf Storm = 114.3% - 134.5%
Swampert: Leaf Storm = 167.3% - 197%
Aerodactyl: Rock Slide = 74.8% - 88.7%
Dragonite: Rock Slide = 51.9% - 61.1%

What can those leads do in return:

Heatran: Fire Blast = 72.5% - 85.5%, Overheat = 84.6% - 99.7%
Infernape: Fake Out = 9.4% - 11.2% + Fire Blast: 61.9% - 73.4% (11,2 + 73,4 < 100 = NOT 2HKO)
Metagross: Meteor Mash = 52.9% - 62.5%
Roserade: Hidden Power (fire) = 27.5% - 32.6%
Jirachi: Fire Punch = 19.9% - 23.6%, Iron Head = 31.7% - 37.5%
Azelf: Fire Blast = 47.1% - 55.6%
Hippowdon: Earthquake = 17.2% - 20.2%
Swampert: Ice Beam* = 88.2% - 105.1%, Waterfall = 27.2% - 32.6%
Aerodactyl: Earthquake = 13.6% - 16%, Ice Fang = 71.3% - 84.6%
Dragonite: Fire Blast = 57.4% - 67.7% , Draco Meteor = 100% - 118.1%

Aquarius
Vaporeon @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 188 HP / 252 Def / 68 SpD
Nature: Bold
- Wish
- Surf
- Roar
- Protect

Good old wish support Vaporeon. I really love this girl and she finds her way on my team lots of times. Ev’s and such are all standard, except for roar. I saw it on a RMT a while ago, and tested it out. Turns out it is quite effective and a nasty surprise for anything setting up. Protect gives me a guaranteed way of healing myself but is also a huge help for scouting. I normally find myself in battle with an Infernape and I protect to scout the set. I can also manipulate it to drop his defense once or twice, making him venerable to whatever I bring in next. Even without any ev investment, I can OHKO whether rocks are out or not. Heatran is a solid 2HKO, but if the Fire Blast then Heatran explodes there is a chance I will faint, but more than likely I simply protect out of habit. My reasoning for him to be on my team is from old Raikou testing. I noticed that his defenses aren’t as brand as I first thought, and it was remarkably difficult to get him back in for a second sweep. This is the only way of recovering him until Black and White come out in America, so I resolved to Vaporeon. Raikou can come in on grass and electric attacks and set up. Vaporeon has the vital ice resistance that Flygon and Torterra need to survive. Grass attacks can be directed to just about anyone on my team, as everyone takes them neutrally or resist them. Any electric attaks can go to Flygon, Torterra, or especially, Raikou. Vaporeon’s weaknesses are so easily covered for this team its insane.

Changes: Vaporeon is my most expendable member, but it NEEDS an ice resistance, I am low enough on them as it is.

Sandstorm
Flygon @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spe
Nature: Jolly (+Spe. –S.Atk)
- Outrage
- U-Turn
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge/Fire Blast

Ah Flygon, a true pokemon. Flygon has always been a favorite of mine so it wasn’t hard for him to find a fit on my team. His role is the easy switch in and revenge killer. Ev’s are simple enough to where I don’t have to go into detail. Max atack to hit hard and max speed to tie with 100 base scarfers. Moves are all standard, but I cant decide whether to use Fire Blast or Stone Edge. Fire blast would definitely be nice to get Breloom before he subs up but Stone Edge would hit Gyarados decently should I come in when Gyarados Intimidated the previous pokemon. However Fire Blast has the advantage of hitting Skarmory for a big surprise. It also has a 2HKO on both Skarmory and Breloom without any investment. I generally go straight for an earthquake but that leaves me open for just about anything to come in on me. I generally don’t Outrage early on because They simply bring in a steel and kill me off. U-turn makes easy scouting for sets I don’t know. Flygon is my switch in for most things, with fire and rock resistance as well as a nifty electric immunity, he can come in easily very often. Any Dragon attacks thrown at him can be eaten up by metegross. Ice gets sent to either Vaporeon or Metagross. Flygon can take any ground attacks for Raikou, and Electric attack for Gyarados, making an easy switch for both members of my core.

Changes: Stone Edge or Fire Blast, that’s it

Iron Man
Metagross @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 240 HP / 80 Atk / 188 SpD
Nature: Adamant (+ Atk, -S.Atk)
- Meteor Mash
- Bullet Punch
- Earthquake
- Thunder Punch / Explosion

Metagross is this team’s steel wall, bulky hitter, and carries the ever useful priority. While this set may look very gimmicky, its from Vashta’s Team Rose Tyler. Thos set acts a wall and a check to lots of pokes in the metagame. The Ev’s guarantee timid Gengar’s Focus Blast is never a 2HKO without any prior damage. The attack Ev’s guarantee a OHKO with Thunder Punch. This Metagross is all I ever wanted. He’s bulky, hard hitting, and not locked into a choice band so he’s a lot more versatile. Bullet Punch is absolutely crucial because it is the only form of priority that I have. Earthquake does well against other steels and has very good coverage with the other moves. Meteor Mash hits just about anything that doesn’t resist for god damage. Thunder Punch and Shuca Berry make quick work of Gyarados, but I am not sure if that is as important and Explosion is. I currently cannot decide on which to use and it bothers me often. The reason I chose Metagross for this spot on my team is I needed a steel type, priority, and a bulky, bulky wall. Metagross fits all of these nicely and this set is quite a surprise for people who always expect what’s on the strategydex. The reasoning for the nature is obvious, simply for hitting harder. Team synergy wise this thing is a beast. Being a steel type, it boasts its many resistances. It takes the Ice from Torterra and flygon, the rock thrown at Gyarados, the grass from Vaporeon, and with Shuca berry it can take an earthquake for Raikou. This thing is a common switch in for just about anything. I am truly satisfied with this set, thank you Vashta.

Changes: Thunder Punch or Explosion

Leviathan
Gyarados @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 156 HP / 72 Atk / 96 Def / 184 Spe
Nature: Adamant (+ Atk, -S.Atk)
- Dragon Dance
- Taunt / Earthquake
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge

The physical side of my core. Bulky Gyarados is a reliable offensive physical wall that I have used many times. Everything on him is pretty standard. Dragon Dance for boosting up, Waterfall for stab, and Stone Edge for hitting the now more common Dragonites. I can’t decided on whether or not to go forunt or Earthquake however. While taunt lets me set up on Skarmory, Earthquake brings down Metagross and Magnezone. I am currently using taunt but earthquake is definitely an option. Intimidate is a huge part of Gyarados and I use it often. Many times I switch in Gyarados just to get down that intimidate for the frailer members of my team. If they fall I bring him back in for a second one. This is many times how I deal with lead Machamps. A big part of Gyarados on my team is it is the single best core member to be with Raikou. Gyarados can come in on earthquakes. If they EQ it means they are physical, so the intimate won’t suite them well. I find that when I carry taunt Swampert and Skarmory and get myself to +6 on them. Unless I play bad Gyardos always pull off a kill and more times than not, he gives Raikou a chance to pull off a Calm Mind. With team Synergy his real advantage is perfect syergy with Raikou, but he can take Earthquakes for Metagross and intimidate any physical attacker. He does an ok job at taking on Machamp but I am thinking about giving him a lot more physical defense for that purpose alone.

Changes: EG or Taunt, maybe more physical Evs

Raikou.png

ElectricIC_Big.png

Thunder Cloud
Raikou @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 S.Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Hp
Nature: Timid (+Spe, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Thunderbolt
- Shadow Ball
- Hidden Power-Ice

The member of my team, as well as the inner core, is Raikou. I don’t understand why he isn’t used as much. 115 base speed and special attack is amazing, as well as calm mind, only one weakness, and respectable defenses spells top notch OU member to me. It just doesn’t make sence why he isn’t up there. He has everything that any poke could need and more. He has never let me down on this team. What I truly love about this set is that it doesn’t even need a calm mind because its that hard hitting. The only thing it really has trouble with is Starmie, but that’s only when it has Hydro Pump. Thunder bolt and shadow ball are pretty obvious. I chose hp ice over grass because of Dragonite. I do miss getting the surprise ko on swampert. Calm Mind is the crux of the set, making him bulkier and harder hitting than ever. I really hope this RMT gets people using him because hes just that good. Synergy wise the whole team is built around him. Torterra, Gyarados, and Flygon can take the quakes so I am never worried about that. Raikou takes electric moves for Gyarados and Raikou comes in whenever a bulky water attempts to get Flygon.

That’s the team, I could realyy use any advice, because I am not happy with 1112 CRE.

Threats:

-Machamp-annyoing, but I can eventually take it down
-Dragonite-If it sets up, a problem
-Rotom – Difficult, I usually have to sacrifice Flygon to get it in Shadow balls KO range

Notable Problems

  • Lead Machamp
I see that you've mentioned Machamp in your own threats list, but I'm not sure to what extent you can actually deal with it. Ice Punch hits Torterra hard, and nothing on your team particularly likes taking a DynamicPunch, due to the confusion and power of Machamp.

  • Stall
It's hard for me to make any recommendation that wouldn't drastically change the team, but I would at least like to point out that stall teams are particularly troublesome to play against. This isn't too bad at your current rating, but as you advance up the ladder, stall becomes increasingly more prevalent. The common SkarmBliss combination effectively walls 5/6 of your team, with only Gyarados being able to take it on with Taunt. However, since stall teams are almost guaranteed to carry a bulky Rotom-A, Gyarados won't be able to sweep through them either.

Suggestions

  • Consider a Vaporeon replacement
This will likely be a very difficult change to implement, as Vaporeon's bulk and ability to heal other team members with Wish is often very useful. However, I feel that the weakness to Machamp and stall warrants the notion of a replacement. While this is likely going to seem like a very strange recommendation at first, I think that a CM Slowbro would fit well in its place:

Slowbro (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Own Tempo
Bold nature (+Def, -Atk)
EVs: 252 HP/176 Def/80 SpD
- Calm Mind
- Surf
- Psychic
- Rest

Slowbro possesses a considerable amount of bulk as well, but its main advantage lies in its ability to reliably counter Machamp. Due to its ability Own Tempo, it is immune to confusion, and is defensive enough that it can easily take Paybacks without suffering much damage. This set is also bulky enough to stat-up and sweep through some stall team members with the combination of Calm Mind and Rest. Status from the likes of Blissey won't bother it, as it can simply use Rest and continue setting up.

Good luck with your team!

Hello you Freak of Nature you, this team looks pretty legit actually, that lead be ballin'. The team dose very decently again most offense, but stall seems a bit problematic. It seems like, while all of your members check offensive threats, simple SkarmBliss is all the opponent needs to beat the whole team. Also, Rotom forms seem like a big problem, as they wall/beat/ act reasonably well against all members save Raikou, and even that isn't really certain. Obviously Rotom forms are run quite frequently with SkarmBliss so this is definitely an issue.

Metagross seems like he could be the first to be replaced here, if his duty is to check Gengar, Gyarados and Salamence like it was in Rose Tyler, well, Vaporeon / Banhammer has most of those sufficiently covered. I think that a good fix here would be to use a Calm Mind + 3 attacks Jirachi, running the set:

252 HP / 220 Def / 36 Spe
Timid, @ Leftovers
Calm Mind, Psychic, Thunderbolt, Wish

You can run some different EVs if you like, that isn't really the point. This set does very, very well against stall teams. If you think the dual wishers are redundant, feel free to run a fast SubCM set or Superachi or something, but I think the wish set functions best without much support. It also helps Gyarados set up by wishing him into a Heatran or something, and weakens Swampert and Celebi so that Raikou can have a better shot sweeping later. It also gives you a shaky manner of dealing with Machamp: if you switch into the Ice Punch, you can fire of a Psychic for a 2HKO while Dynamic Punch does something in the neighbourhood of 30%? Admittedly this can be tricky of confusion hax bests you but you can always Wish it off later, especially with Vaporeon helping you with that.

Beyond that, an excellent, creative and altogether solid team, I wish you the best of luck. Hope this helps.

I really dislike lead Torterra overall, esp since you lose to 7 out of those 12 leads (numbers lie, esp in this case)
Infernape: if you set up rocks, he gets rocks and kills you since he has sash and lives the eq, if you attack off the bat he gets up rocks and knocks you to like 10%, while you dont have rocks.
Metagross: same thing, but worse. he sets up rocks first turn. if you attack, he explodes and you dont get rocks. if you SR he 2HKO's since hes faster
Roserade and Smeargle: throw your stupid calcs out the window, they sleep powder/spore and you are nothing but setup bait.
Azelf: only situation you even come out even is they taunt on your leaf storm. If you attack on SR, they blow you up, if you SR on taunt, same thing.
Machamp and Dragonite just walk all over you.

The common leads work for a reason =/

IF you are dead set on keeping torterra, you could change EV set to Brave (+atk -speed) with 32 speed EV's. this lets you outspeed standard swampert and gives you +12 in special defense. unless theres something else in that speed bracket that you desperately want to outrun. (i am assuming you dont want to stay in to die vs machamp)

Agreeing how I don't like the Torrterra Lead. Also vs the now more common Heatran lead (which Delko did not plan for) your Torrterra lead takes 120.54% - 142.3% with your berry taken into account. This is because many Heatran now run Modest + LO + Overheat to KO Machamp. Some also run Specs which you struggle to beat as well.

To Fix this I suggest a Colbur Lead Azelf. I know its not exactly original but it gets SR up fast and can deal with Machamp which your team has issues with. Also Explosion gives you a weapon to use vs Blissey.

Obviously, as pointed out you have issues with stall. Therefore I am suggesting a small change to your Metagross moveset. Basicaly I am suggesting a Trick + Iron Ball set which lets you cripple things like Rotom and Skarmory. Even Blissey will find it harder to wall when its lost her leftovers. Metagross can also EXplode if need be as well. The best thing about this set is that it lets you break down stall depending on the member you trick. For exapme if you trick Rotom then Gyarados can sweep easier, if you trick Skarmory then Metagross can remove Skarmory thus hopefully preventing Hazards from wearing you down.

Here is the set

Metagross @ Iron Ball
Adamant
236 HP / 252 Atk / 20 Spe
Meteor Mash
Earthquake
Trick
Explosion

Have a Nice Day!

Alright I have looked over the Rates and have thought about them all. I now see some complications with the torterra lead especially with all of the new heatrans running about. I am using Iron ball metagross for stall. I really am not sure about slowpoke because I like a wisher. I will do some testing for slowbro however. Jirachi I won't use because it doesn't posses the bulk that metagross does, especially on the physical side. For Ginjaninja's Azelf lead I will look deeper into it and test it out

If you're thinking of replacing Vaporeon with Slowbro, you might appreciate trying out the Choice Specs set which functions surprisingly excellently in OU. Apart from wiping out Machamp, it usually picks up a KO through sheer surprise value and still fulfils some walling capacity.

Hi there!

Your team is cool, and supporting Raikou is a very nifty idea. That thing can be a beast with the proper support. I agree with the others that Torterra is really holding you back. You need more middle game support from your lead, even if you do somehow beat the opposing lead, and Torterra just doesn't provide it. There are lots of ways we could go to fix this, but let's try this one. Move Metagross to the lead slot and use the following set:

Metagross @ Lum Berry
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Nature: Adamant
~ Meteor Mash
~ Bullet Punch
~ Explosion
~ Stealth Rock

  • Beats Machamp leads
  • Has much better midgame utility than Torterra
  • Can actually beat a majority of leads with Bullet Punch
  • Gets up rocks more reliably
  • Isn't setup bait for any number of things and can Explode to deal with things that try to set up on it
Now I am going to go out on a limb and suggest a wallbreaker. First of all, Raikou really needs stall dealt with to even be useful, he needs something to remove Tyranitar given your set, and your team needs a legitimate switch-in to Heatran that doesn't require your Gyarados losing upwards of 50% of its HP. Consider Choice Band Dragonite as a replacement for Vaporeon for the following reasons:

  • Vaporeon doubles up on the Water-types on your team and slows down your momentum. Gyarados functions as your offensive bulky Water here, so you should replace Vaporeon.
  • Switches into Heatran very well with excellent bulk and resistances to all common moves bar coverage Hidden Power and Dragon Pulse
  • Can 2HKO or OHKO many Pokemon who otherwise would be troubling to Raikou and the rest of your team
  • Can run Waterfall over Earthquake to deal massive damage to Gengar and Rotom-A switching in to dodge Earthquake, something your team really appreciates (and still OHKOes Heatran)
  • Gives your team massive support with its immensely powerful ExtremeSpeed for revenge killing threats like opposing Dragonite or Gyarados that got through Flygon and the rest of your team
Try this set:

Dragonite @ Choice Band
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Nature: Adamant
~ Outrage
~ Waterfall
~ Fire Punch
~ ExtremeSpeed

Next, going to suggest replacing Stone Edge on Flygon with ThunderPunch. I make this suggestion because without Vaporeon, you have a much harder time checking and beating a setup Gyarados.

Lastly, stick with Taunt on Gyarados. Your team can cover AgiliGross adequately unless its cleaning up, and you could really use the insurance against Skarmory switch-ins who you do not want to Whirlwind you away.

Hope this helps, and good luck with your team!

Hello. The reason why your team is not as succesful as you want it to be is because you are not offering Raikou the support it needs. Now, I'm going to agree with the other raters that Torterra just doesn't cut it. Specs or LO Heatran leads OHKO regardless of Occa Berry and Roserade can threaten it with HP Ice / Leaf Storm or set-up Toxic Spikes which really limits Raikou's chances of sweeping. It does well against a few leads but it isn't really useful mid-game. Since an attacking lead Machamp is a pain for this team to beat, I second moving Metagross to the lead slot. It has lots of potential as a lead in this metagame and is overall an excellent addition to your team.

Stick with Taunt on Gyarados, it gives you a handy weapon against stall and let's you set-up on a bigger variety of Pokemon.

Raikou is the kind of Pokemon that requires a bit of support to work efficiently. Rising_Dusk's got the idea right. A wall-breaker will really help you out, since you need to weaken stall enough and lure in and KO Raikou's counters. I think a LO Heatran will work best over Torterra. Use the following moveset: Fire Blast / HP Grass / Earthpower / Explosion with a Naive / Hasty nature, Life Orb and 4 Atk / 252 SpAtk / 252 Spe. It lures in Blissey and Swampert that give Raikou a hard time and takes them out with Explosion and HP Grass respectively, effectively clearing the path for Raikou. Assuming you play right, Raikou should be able to break through more often than not, so give Heatran a try ;)
