The viability of Draining attacks

Medicham with Drain Punch is the biggest waste of time. Regaining HP is the last thing he's concerned about; he's better off using stronger moves, like Brick Break, HJK, or Reversal...

Focus Sash can only be used once...

That's funny, because it definitely worked on PBR for me.

Then again a lot of weird stuff works on PBR and at the same time doesn't on the DS. I don't think it matters too much anyways because most of the time I ended up switching out Medicham at full HP and subbing it back in later so Focus Sash still worked. Which may be why I am under the impression it works that way...

Thank you for this enlightening comment that utterly ignores the point of the strategy in my last post.

Drain Punch on Hariyama? Hariyama is very bulky and can make good use of it. Giga Drain on almost anything that gets STAB (Roserade and Celebi come to mind). Regigigas gets Drain Punch as its sole form of recovery, but then again Regigigas sucks.

Why decrease HP? The set is just as effective when you have 31 IVs in HP, except you might not need the focus sash on the first hit (meaning that you can save it for later)

Because the less hitpoints a poke has, the less damage you have to inflict to reach 100% again and get to use Focus Sash. For example, if you use (ATK boosted) Medicham to score a KO on something like a 0 HP EV Snorlax...

31 HP IVs 0 EVs gives Snorlax 461 HP
0 HP IVs gives Medicham 230 HP.

So because half the damage inflicted is turned into health, 0 HP IVs on Medicham would just BARELY allow you to restore 100% of its health and validate Focus Sash. Obviously that's a really specific example and the whole strategy assumes you'll be up against high HP enemies, but you get the point.

Actually it does = startegy becaus eits allowed by the game to create different ways to do one thing multiple times. Also Focus Sash only goes if you go down to 1 HP. if you're at anything above 1% than if you get back to 100% Focus Sash will work again

But he's talking about activating sash, getting back to 100%, losing 99%, activating sash, getting back to 100%, etc. So it is illegal.

if sash worked that way, we'd all be running shedinja @ focus sash. Inverted clefable! (ie killable only by passive damage as opposed to killable only by direct damage :naughty: )

I daresay PBR is less screwed up than Shoddy.
One is made by Nintendo, the other is a facsimile.

And perhaps Shedinja is just a special case?
Has it even been tested in D/P?

<--- vileplume can learn drain punch AND giga drain. it has base 80 and 100 attack respectively, and swords dance.
