[OVERVIEW]
Thievul's main niche stems from its ability, Stakeout. With proper positioning, it can force switches in order to capitalize on the 2x boost Stakeout gives. A decent STAB move in Dark Pulse works well with solid coverage for Dark-resistant Pokemon such as Scrafty, allowing Thievul to nail, and usually OHKO, most Dark-resistant Pokemon with a Stakeout-boosted coverage move. It also takes advantage of the tier's defensive Ghost-types like Doublade and Jellicent, potentially forcing the opponent into undesirable positions where Thievul can ensure a KO. However, Thievul's Speed, while decent for a wallbreaker, often leaves it forced out by a myriad of faster threats like Scyther, Archeops, and Whimsicott. Its pure-Dark typing leaves it with little switch-in opportunities due to weaknesses to common Bug-, Fighting-, and Fairy-type moves, and its poor overall bulk gives it no favors. Thievul is also heavily reliant on prediction and a Stakeout boost to succeed, as its Special Attack is middling and Dark Pulse has mediocre Base Power. Even with the Stakeout boost, Pokemon such as Gigalith and Ferroseed can take hits meant for their partners. Finally, Thievul can be blanked by special walls such as Articuno and Aromatisse, which take little from all of Thievul's common moves.

[SET]
name: Stakeout
move 1: Dark Pulse
move 2: Grass Knot
move 3: Psychic / Play Rough
move 4: U-turn
item: Choice Specs
ability: Stakeout
nature: Modest / Mild
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Grass Knot hits opposing Rock-types such as Regirock and Gigalith, OHKOing both with a Stakeout boost after minimal chip damage. Psychic hits Fighting-types like Poliwrath looking to take a Dark Pulse, and it is a decent midground option for Fairy-types like Silvally-Fairy and Ribombee, OHKOing the latter. Play Rough hits Scrafty and will guarantee an OHKO with Stakeout after a layer of Spikes. If Play Rough is run, Mild is another option to ensure the aforementioned OHKO on Scrafty; however, either way, being locked into Play Rough often forces Thievul out, even if it predicts correctly. U-turn allows Thievul to pivot out on switch-ins such as Audino. Thievul should be paired with Pokemon that can take advantage of special walls like Aromatisse. Fighting-types such as Sawk and Gallade are great at forcing out many special walls, as well as wearing down shared switch-ins such as Aromatisse. Faster Pokemon like Scyther often force Thievul out, so Pokemon that can switch into them like Aggron and Sandaconda are heavily appreciated. Aggron and Sandaconda further provide Stealth Rock. Other pivots such as Wishiwashi and Ninjask can also bring Thievul in safely, the former due to being slow and the latter because Thievul forces out its switch-ins. Scrafty answers like Whimsicott and Quagsire are near mandatory, as Thievul will not always predict properly when a Scrafty is on the opposing team, and it appreciates not having to worry much about enabling a setup sweep if it does predict incorrectly.

[OVERVIEW]
Thievul's main niche stems from its ability, Stakeout. With proper positioning, it can force switches in order to capitalize on the 2x boost Stakeout gives. A decent STAB (should probably clarify that you mean dark pulse by saying "STAB move in Dark Pulse" or smth, "STAB" on its own doesn't make sense here.) combined with solid coverage for Dark-type resists such as Ribombee and Scrafty allows it to hit most Dark-type resists with a Stakeout boosted coverage move, which will usually OHKO. It also takes advantage of the tier's defensive Ghost-types like Cofagrigus and Jellicent, which can force the opponent into undesirable positions where Thievul can grab a KO. However, Thievul's speed, while decent for a wallbreaker, often leaves it forced out by a myriad of faster threats like Charizard, Archeops, and Ninjask (the first two are fine, but ninjask is hyperfast and imo an unfair example.). Its pure Dark-typing leaves it with little switch-in opportunities due to being weak to common Bug-, Fighting-, and Fairy-type moves. Thievul is also heavily reliant on prediction to succeed, as even with the Stakeout boost, Pokemon such as Gigalith and Ferroseed can take hits meant for their partners. Finally, Thievul can be blanketed by special walls such as Audino and Aromatisse due to being neutral or resistant to all of Thievul's common coverage moves.

[SET]
name: Stakeout (name this set "Choice Specs".)

move 2: Grass Knot
move 3: Burning Jealousy / Play Rough
move 4: U-turn / Parting Shot

nature: Timid / Hasty
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Grass Knot hits opposing Rock-types such as Regirock and Gigalith, notably OHKOing the latter with a Stakeout boost after minimal chip damage. Burning Jealousy hits Ribombee, Whimsicott, and makes forcing switches against Ferroseed easier, while Play Rough hits Scrafty and will guarantee an OHKO with Stakeout after a layer of Spikes. If Play Rough is run, Hasty is recommended to ensure the atformentioned OHKO on Scrafty is achieved. Both U-turn and Parting Shot allow Thievul to pivot out on switch-ins such as Hitmontop and Coalossol, with each having their advantage over the other; U-turn can hurt Thievul due to hitting Iron Barbs and Rocky Helmet, while Parting Shot is blocked by Clear Body users such as Regirock and supplies Galarian Articuno with a +3 SpA boost due to Competitive. (the stuff about regi is good, but i feel like your thievul-guno scenario would very rarely actually play out bc of how risky it is for both sides. guno really shouldn't be switching into thievul, and if thievul has to stay in on guno, it's probably gonna use dpulse or some coverage move on a hard read.) (niche af mon, but i think it's worth bringing carbink up when you talk about clear body and pshot. carbink even stonewalls thievul bc of its fairy typing + low weight making gknot weak.) Thievul should be paired with Pokemon that can take advantage of special walls like Audino. Fighting-types such as Sawk and Gallade are great at forcing out many special walls, while wearing down shared switch-ins such as Aromatisse. Thievul is often forced out by faster Pokemon like Scyther and Espeon (rip), so Pokemon that can switch into them like Palossand and Togedemaru are heavily appreicated. In return, Palossand provides entry hazards support while Togedemaru gives Thievul a slow pivot in with U-turn.

it's very reliant on getting a stakeout boost to actually b threatening, as its special attack is pretty average and so is dark pulse's bp. this could b added to the speed point, as that's smth tht limits how many mons it forces out

move 2: Grass Knot
move 3: Burning Jealousy / Play Rough i think psychic is better than burning jealousy; u still ohko whimsi and ribombee when they try to switch in while also sometimes being safer to click than burning jealousy or grass knot. also hits bulky fairies and mono-fighting types harder
move 4: U-turn / Parting Shot

[SET COMMENTS]
Grass Knot hits opposing Rock-types such as Regirock and Gigalith, notably OHKOing the latter with a Stakeout boost after minimal chip damage. (this makes it seem like it doesnt ohko regirock, which is false. i get why ohkoing gigalith in particular is important cuz it actually switches into u but i'd reword this) Burning Jealousy hits Ribombee, Whimsicott, and makes forcing switches against Ferroseed easier, while Play Rough hits Scrafty and will guarantee an OHKO with Stakeout after a layer of Spikes. If Play Rough is run, Hasty is recommended to ensure the aforementioned OHKO on Scrafty is achieved. (do u rly need to ohko? putting it in range of a boosted dark pulse so it cant switch into u a second time seems like it's enough, plus killing scrafty and being locked into non-stab play rough on a mon with like 0 attack does not seem particularly fun) Both U-turn and Parting Shot allow Thievul to pivot out on switch-ins such as Hitmontop and Coalossol, (not a switchin) with each having their advantage (these are disadvantages though) over the other; U-turn can hurt Thievul due to hitting Iron Barbs and Rocky Helmet, while Parting Shot is blocked by Clear Body users such as Regirock and Carbink. Thievul should be paired with Pokemon that can take advantage of special walls like Audino. (i'd prefer it if u mentioned smth like aromatisse) Fighting-types such as Sawk and Gallade are great at forcing out many special walls while wearing down shared switch-ins such as Aromatisse. Thievul is often forced out by faster Pokemon like Scyther, so Pokemon that can switch into them like Palossand and Togedemaru (both of those are very shaky scyther switchins, with palossand straight up losing to it)(think u could also mention answers to mons like scrafty cuz chances are u wont get evry 50/50 right) are heavily appreciated. In return, Palossand provides entry hazards support while Togedemaru gives Thievul a slow pivot in with U-turn.

i think u should talk abt pivots more. i'd never ever use thievul w/o smth to bring it in vs a jellicent or sandaconda or whatever else

This was finished on Discord. Changes were removing Parting Shot and all mentions, replacing Timid / Hasty with Modest / Mild, and cleaning up the examples.
