Project Threats to OU Cores v2: Round 72: Mega Charizard X + Ash-Greninja

Status
Not open for further replies.
Highlights

Threat of the Round:

: Toxapex is probably the best blanket check to Ash-Greninja and Tornadus-T; it's naturally a very good choice against this core.

Additional Notes:

: Jolly Mega Mawile is really bad.
: Mantine has to be extremely wary of Stealth Rock, considering it has Defog, I don't think it's unusual for this core to overwhelm it.

Round 53 Core: Mega Alakazam + Greninja

Alakazam @ Alakazite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Recover
- Shadow Ball / Calm Mind

Greninja @ Fightinium Z
Ability: Protean
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Low Kick
- Gunk Shot
- Ice Beam
- Spikes

  • This core has been rising since SPL, and has shown its worth. The simple premise of this core is that Mega Alakazam and Greninja steadily wear down sturdy Steel-types together. Furthermore, Greninja also provides Spikes support.
  • Try to post only OU viable Pokémon and don't post sets specifically for this core, additionally your threat should not be complete deadweight against teams that do not feature the core of Mega Alakazam + Greninja. Everyone have a good day!

Reserving the ultimate pokemon: Mega-Sableye

Sableye @ Sablenite
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover
- Protect

252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Shadow Ball vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Sableye-Mega: 72-85 (23.7 - 28%) -- 89.6% chance to 4HKO
4 SpA Greninja Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Sableye-Mega: 66-78 (21.7 - 25.7%) -- 0.6% chance to 4HKO

0 Atk Sableye-Mega Knock Off vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Alakazam-Mega: 174-206 (69.3 - 82%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Sableye-Mega Knock Off vs. 0 HP / 0- Def (Ice type) Greninja: 94-112 (32.9 - 39.2%) -- 99.9% chance to 3HKO
M-Sableye counters every M-Alakazam without Dazzling Gleam. Against Greninja, he prevents hazards and without freeze, counters him.

Latias-Mega @ Latiasite
Timid Nature
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
- Thunder Wave
- Ice Beam
- Roost
- Thunderbolt/HP Ground/Defog

Once Greninja is confirmed Protean Lati is a solid check against both.
It can switch into Zams Psychic/Focus blast and even Shadow Ball when rocks arent up and throw off a T-Wave.
If its not Shadow Ball, Zam is walled.
Once crippled it can roost up while fishing for the para.

This Gren set cant really touch it, even a potential U-Turn from max attack has a low chance to 2HKO.
Its best chance to 1v1 it is to IB twice after rocks
Additionally, it can Defog Spikes if needed

While Lati may not beat Zam 1v1 all the time, it can switch into Zam+cripple it which leaves it more vulnerable to the rest of the team.
Regarding Gren, without U-Turn Lati isnt really threatened unless it gets statused or crit

Relevant calcs:
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Latias-Mega: 154-182 (42.3 - 50%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Latias-Mega: 57-68 (15.6 - 18.6%) -- possible 6HKO
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Psychic vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Latias-Mega: 65-77 (17.8 - 21.1%) -- possible 5HKO
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Shadow Ball vs. -1 252 HP / 0 SpD Latias-Mega: 230-272 (63.1 - 74.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

0 SpA Latias-Mega Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Alakazam-Mega: 84-99 (33.4 - 39.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Lati can switch into FB/Psychic+Shadow Ball when rocks are up, if rocks are up one needs to not get it in on a Shadow Ball.

0 SpA Protean Greninja Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Latias-Mega: 140-168 (38.4 - 46.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
0 SpA Protean Greninja Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Latias-Mega: 140-168 (38.4 - 46.1%) -- 16.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Protean Greninja Gunk Shot vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Latias-Mega: 135-160 (37 - 43.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 Atk Protean Greninja U-turn vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Latias-Mega: 158-188 (43.4 - 51.6%) -- 9.4% chance to 2HKO

vs. Water/ice 0 SpA Latias-Mega Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Greninja: 57-68 (20 - 23.8%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

Choice Scarf Kartana

Kartana @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Leaf Blade
- Sacred Sword
- Smart Strike
- Knock Off

Kart can only switch into a Non-Z Low Kick or Gunk Shot due to every other attack from this core having a chance to OHKO. However, switching into Gunk Shot isn't the best Idea, since It turns Gren into a Poison type, making Leaf Blade a 2HKO. Once safely in, Kart outspeeds and OHKOs both members with Leaf blade (as long as Gren isn't a Poison type).

Calcs V.S.
:

252 Atk Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Greninja: 145-171 (50.8 - 60%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (Poison Gren)
252 Atk Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Greninja: 582-686 (204.2 - 240.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO (Ground and Water/Dark Gren)
252 Atk Kartana Smart Strike vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Greninja: 456-536 (160 - 188%) -- guaranteed OHKO (Ice and Fighting Gren)
4 SpA Greninja Ice Beam vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Kartana: 240-283 (92.3 - 108.8%) -- 50% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Protean Greninja Low Kick (20 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Kartana: 44-54 (16.9 - 20.7%) -- possible 5HKO
252 Atk Protean Greninja All-Out Pummeling (160 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Kartana: 336-396 (129.2 - 152.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Calcs V.S.
:

252 Atk Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Alakazam-Mega: 267-315 (106.3 - 125.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Kartana: 786-926 (302.3 - 356.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Shadow Ball vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Kartana: 262-309 (100.7 - 118.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Psychic vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Kartana: 221-261 (85 - 100.3%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

Landorus-Therian @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Stone Edge
- Defog

Scarf Lando ofc has a million spreads but I’m just gonna use max Atk and max Spe to ensure rolls are in my favor. Anyway, you outspeed and OHKO both after Rocks. (You KO Greninja 75% of the time without Rocks but whatever.) You can also Defog Greninja’s hazards away. You even live Zam’s Psychic after Rocks so if it does Trace your Intimidate, you’ll still be good.

Greninja (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Protean
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Gunk Shot
- Ice Beam
- U-turn
- Spikes

Scarf Protean Gren outspeeds and OHKOs both members of the core with U-turn, but it can't switch into either, so it functions as a bit of a revenge killer that neither member of the core can switch into at all. Be weary of locking yourself into Spikes because Mega Alakazam tracing protean can wreak havoc on the offensive teams that Greninja tends to be featured on.

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 248 HP / 104 Def / 156 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Heavy Slam
- Flamethrower
- Leech Seed
- Protect

Even with dual Fighting coverage, this core needs a SpA boost/SpD drop or freeze hax to be anything but laughed at by good ol' Steela - and even then, she's still a solid check - while Heavy Slam 1-2HKOs back. ... And yes, I know I post Steela a lot, but it's not my fault she shits on half the meta. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 156 SpD Celesteela: 140-165 (35.2 - 41.5%) -- 80.6% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 156 SpD Celesteela: 209-246 (52.6 - 61.9%) -- 98.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Alakazam-Mega: 186-219 (73.8 - 86.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Protean Greninja All-Out Pummeling (160 BP) vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Celesteela: 169-201 (42.5 - 50.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Protean Greninja Low Kick (120 BP) vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Celesteela: 127-151 (31.9 - 38%) -- 0.6% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Greninja (Fighting/Poison/Ground): 201-237 (70.5 - 83.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Celesteela Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Greninja (Ice): 402-474 (141 - 166.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Step 2: Mega Evolve and Attack
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit

252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Psychic vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gyarados: 184-217 (55.5 - 65.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

4 SpA Protean Greninja Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gyarados: 100-118 (30.2 - 35.6%) -- 32.5% chance to 3HKO

+1 252 Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Crunch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Alakazam-Mega: 630-744 (250.9 - 296.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Greninja: 287-338 (100.7 - 118.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Highlights

Threat of the Round:

: By far the hardest Pokemon to deal with for this core.

Additional Notes:

: Mega Latias is just far too unreliable against the given core.

Round 54 Core: Kyurem + Magnezone

Kyurem @ Metronome
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 56 HP / 200 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Ice Beam
- Earth Power
- Roost

Magnezone @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 8 HP / 4 Def / 244 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Flash Cannon
- Volt Switch

  • Recently rising to the spotlight, Kyurem is a big threat in the current metagame. This core is rather simple, Magnezone traps Steel-types like Mega Scizor and Celesteela for Kyurem.
  • Try to post only OU viable Pokémon and don't post sets specifically for this core, additionally your threat should not be complete deadweight against teams that do not feature the core of Kyurem + Magnezone. Everyone have a good day!

EVs: 248 HP / 244 Def / 16 SpD
Impish Nature
- Swords Dance
- Bullet Punch
- Roost
- Superpower

Scizor's a pretty consistent answer to Kyurem thanks to Bullet Punch's priority and high PP meaning they can't just stall you out with Substitutes and Roost. Superpower chunks Magnezone, OHKOing it with some prior damage.

252 Atk Excadrill Earthquake vs. 8 HP / 4 Def Magnezone: 600-708 (212 - 250.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

244 SpA Magnezone Hidden Power Fire vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Excadrill: 186-220 (51.3 - 60.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Excadrill Iron Head vs. 56 HP / 0 Def Kyurem: 294-348 (72.5 - 85.9%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Outspeeds kyurem and ohkos. Tanks anything magnezone throws at it, as long as it's already mega evolved, and eq takes it out.

Magnezone on Switch-In
  • 244 SpA Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 141-166 (37.8 - 44.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
    • QD into Roost, Magnezone stops being an issue
  • 244 SpA Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. +1 248 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 94-112 (25.2 - 30%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
Kyurem on Switch-In
  • 200 SpA Kyurem Earth Power vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 91-108 (24.3 - 28.9%) -- 99.5% chance to 4HKO

    • At this point, Savage Spinout has a high chance to KO
  • +1 0 SpA Volcarona Savage Spin-Out (175 BP) vs. 56 HP / 0 SpD Kyurem: 399-471 (98.5 - 116.2%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO

    • Still Turn 3 of Metronome
      • If you QD instead
  • 200 SpA Metronome Kyurem Earth Power vs. +2 248 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 61-73 (16.3 - 19.5%) -- not a KO

Lopunny @ Lopunnite
Ability: Limber
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Return
- High Jump Kick
- Fake Out
- Ice Punch

Mega Loppuny destroys this core thanks to both of the members of it being weak to Fighting. Lopunny's speed also makes it so Magnezone is unable to revenge kill it. However, it can't switch in at all and it can be annoying to have to take an Ice Beam if Kyurem is behind a Substitute as Lopunny switches in.
252 Atk Lopunny-Mega High Jump Kick vs. 56 HP / 0 Def Kyurem: 480-566 (118.5 - 139.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Lopunny-Mega High Jump Kick vs. 8 HP / 4 Def Magnezone: 390-458 (137.8 - 161.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
200 SpA Kyurem Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Lopunny-Mega: 147-174 (54.2 - 64.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
244 SpA Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Lopunny-Mega: 151-178 (55.7 - 65.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Chansey @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Seismic Toss
- Toxic / Wish
- Stealth Rock / Heal bell
- Soft-Boiled
200 SpA Kyurem Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 91-108 (12.9 - 15.3%) -- possible 7HKO (With 0 repetition)
200 SpA Metronome Kyurem Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 218-260 (31 - 36.9%) -- not a KO (With more than 5 repetitions)

200 SpA Kyurem Earth Power vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 61-72 (8.6 - 10.2%) -- possibly the worst move ever (With 0 repetition)
200 SpA Metronome Kyurem Earth Power vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 146-172 (20.7 - 24.4%) -- not a KO (With more than 5 repetitions)

244 SpA Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 93-111 (13.2 - 15.7%) -- possible 7HKO
We can see that Chansey can stall both easily. Even if Chansey cannot win the duel of ppstall against Kyurem, he can pose SR, break the spam of an attack or heal another pokemon. In other words, Kyurem is passive against Chansey.

Greninja (M) @ Expert Belt
Ability: Protean
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Low Kick
- Gunk Shot
- Ice Beam
- Spikes

Expert Belt Greninja outspeeds and claps both members of the core with Low Kick, and it can even situationally switch into both members of this core. Not much else needs to be said, it's just got a great matchup against this core just like it does against every other core . :psysly:

Big fan of this in part because Bug Buzz goes through Substitute and Volc has reliable recovery. A lot of common checks get chunked heavily by Kyurem behind a Sub, especially if it's already got a Metronome boost. QD Volc sets up and can click Bug Buzz freely without even having to burn the Z-move.

Terrain Sweeper Hawlucha

Hawlucha @ Electric Seed
Ability: Unburden
EVs: 96 HP / 252 Atk / 36 SpD / 124 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Acrobatics
- Swords Dance
- High Jump Kick
- Roost

Hawlucha requires Terrain support to beat this core. Under a Terrain Hawlucha outspeeds and usually OHKOs both members of this core (Kyurem has the slightest chance to live). However, Lucha can't switch in directly, since Ice Beam and T-bolt are OHKOs.

Calcs V.S.
:

244 SpA Magnezone Flash Cannon vs. 96 HP / 36 SpD Hawlucha: 180-213 (56 - 66.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

244 SpA Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 96 HP / 36 SpD Hawlucha: 404-476 (125.8 - 148.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
