Project Threats to OU Cores v2: Round 72: Mega Charizard X + Ash-Greninja

Greninja:
Z dig with ice beam bops these 2 if u can watch out for sucker at the right time

Koko:
If its shuca and or get in safe, it can hp ice chomp while it can beat down mawile with tbolt without worryin about sucker as it resists it.
Koko can't switch in on either, even with shuca, and it can't deal with this maw. Only Specs Koko offensively checks these if it gets in safe.

Shuca
252 SpA Tapu Koko Thunderbolt vs. 180 HP / 0 SpD Mawile-Mega in Electric Terrain: 186-220 (65 - 76.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Tapu Koko Hidden Power Ice vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 244-288 (68.1 - 80.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

164+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Play Rough vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 297-349 (105.6 - 124.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Shuca Berry Tapu Koko: 373-441 (132.7 - 156.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Specs
252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Koko Thunderbolt vs. 180 HP / 0 SpD Mawile-Mega in Electric Terrain: 279-328 (97.5 - 114.6%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Koko Hidden Power Ice vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 360-428 (100.5 - 119.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Tapu Bulu @ Fightinium Z
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Swords Dance
- Horn Leech
- Superpower
- Synthesis / Protect

Zfight Bulu is uncommon but still viable, being able to pick a KO against the likes of Ferro w/o Atk and Def drops. Bulu counters this Chomp and can setup on it and then KO with some Horn Leeches. M-Maw is a tricky matchup, as Bulu can beat only unboosted M-Maw on a free switch. Bulu outpaces M-Maw, survives one Play Rough, sets up with SD and has a big chance to OHKO M-Maw with +2 Z-Superpower. +2 M-Maw just fucks Bulu, though.

Calcs'll be later

I probs put specs over shuca, so my bad there. altho z electric can be a p big annoyance if chomp takes even a bit of chip and u have hp ice. ill make sure to edit my post to reflect this. ty for pointing it out.

Koko:
If specs, can 1hko mawile or chomp with the right coverage move while mawile cant revenge with sucker punch very ez thanks to koko resisting it. Altho z electric with hp ice can annoy the both of them as well, especially if chomp has taken chip.

mod edit: please stop double posting every time

Swampert @ Swampertite
Ability: Damp
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch
- Stealth Rock

Mega Swampert easily outspeeds both Garchomp and Mega Mawile in rain, and can easily threaten both with Ice Punch or Earthquake respectively.

Celesteela @ Wacan Berry
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 248 HP / 104 Def / 156 SpD
Impish Nature
- Leech Seed
- Protect
- Heavy Slam
- Earthquake

Celesteela has dropped in usage due to the fact Heatran runs rampant on a lot of teams. However, it's still able to check a large amount of Pokemon in the OU tier with ease.

Celesteela resists/is immune to both of Garchomp's STAB moves and resists Play Rough. The rest is up to our best friends: calcs.

Oh yea it's not deadweight against teams without MMawile + Chomp

+2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Thunder Punch vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Wacan Berry Celesteela: 248-292 (62.4 - 73.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Tapu Koko Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 156 SpD Wacan Berry Celesteela in Electric Terrain: 153-180 (38.5 - 45.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 156 SpD Wacan Berry Celesteela: 187-222 (47.1 - 55.9%) -- 78.5% chance to 2HKO

0 Atk Celesteela Earthquake vs. 40 HP / 0 Def Mawile-Mega: 120-142 (47.8 - 56.5%) -- 84.4% chance to 2HKO
0 Atk Celesteela Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 276-328 (71.5 - 84.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Celesteela Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 168-198 (59.7 - 70.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Celesteela Earthquake vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Magnezone: 260-308 (92.1 - 109.2%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

It's able to lure Electric-types and damage them with EQ, as well as denting the Steel-type trappers: Heatran and Magnezone.

Good teammates include strong special Psychic or Fairy-type Pokemon, such as Tapu Lele. They're able to weaken Pokemon such as Heatran and Mega Mawile to the point where Earthquake OHKOes it. Pokemon which also appreciate these Steel-types weakened are good teammates, such as other Steel-type Pokemon, Water-types that struggle with the mentioned Electric-types and Psychic and Fairy-type attackers.

Highlights

Threat of the Week: Greninja

: The core is incredibly weak to Greninja, and there's not really a way to play around it with it.

Not Archived

: Wacan Berry is completely unviable, but Celesteela is pretty annoying.

Round 31 Core: Magearna + Mega Alakazam

Magearna @ Fairium Z
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shift Gear
- Calm Mind
- Fleur Cannon
- Focus Blast

Alakazam @ Alakazite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Recover
- Shadow Ball

  • Magearna's offensive sets have gotten a lot more traction recently, this set specifically threatens pretty much anything that's not called Toxapex. However, this is where Mega Alakazam comes in, as it can take advantage of Toxapex. Also, Magearna weakens Steel-types for Mega Alakazam.
  • Try to post only OU viable Pokémon and don't post sets specifically for this core, additionally your threat should not be complete deadweight against teams that do not feature the core of Magearna + Mega Alakazam. Everyone have a good day!

This Song of the Week is "Jacin", which is a track that was released on Jacin Trill's most recent album.

Victini @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Victory Star
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- V-create
- Bolt Strike
- U-turn
- Trick / Final Gambit

Scarf Vic just outpaces both M-Zam and unboosted Gear and OHKOes them with V-Create. Vic dislikes take Shadow Ball from M-Zam but freely comes on Gear due to Vic's typing.

Calcs'll be later

Magearna @ Assault Vest
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 248 HP / 224 SpD / 36 Spe
Sassy Nature
- Fleur Cannon
- Iron Head
- Volt Switch
- Focus Blast
Magearna hard checks both of these Pokémon and can 2HKO both.
Edit: For some reason I was dumb and thought that Magearna was Tapu Lele but Magearna can still counter SG Magearna even if it doesn’t 2HKO it.

Celesteela: Sure, it can get chipped but it can leech and even slam if it gets in safely. Both only have blast, which is blast, so ur playin a dangerous game with it by relying on it.

Mega Mawile: This thing can sucker zam, take a +1 blast if EVd correct, and if its the AOA, can fire fang gear. u again gotta hit blasts which sucks. and mawile punishes blasts with sucker 50 50s.

Chansey @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 244 HP / 252 Def / 12 SpD
Bold Nature
- Seismic Toss
- Toxic
- Stealth Rock
- Soft-Boiled

Any time you're missing physical attackers or Psyshock, you become walled by this fat blob, and those two are no exception. Chansey eats Zam's Focus Miss for breakfeast and Magearna needs to be at +6 to have a shot at OHKOing it, at which point it would have been seismic tossed to death.

+6 252 SpA Magearna Focus Blast vs. 244 HP / 12 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 662-780 (94.3 - 111.1%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 244 HP / 12 SpD Eviolite Chansey: 208-246 (29.6 - 35%) -- 15% chance to 3HKO

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 248 HP / 196 SpD / 64 Spe
Careful Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Iron Head
- U-turn / Body Slam

Both Magearna and Mega Alakazam have their STAB resisted by Jirachi, and while Focus Blast hits it for neutral damage and Shadow Ball hits it for super effective damage, Jirachi possess the bulk to take hits from both of these Pokemon, as well as able to use its ability Serene Grace to paralyze with Body Slam and flinch it with Jirachi afterwards. Alternatively, U-turn is an option to pivot out into something else on the team that can check it more easily. Having Wish + Protect is also a great stall method, as Focus Blast has only 8 PP, and a rather large chance to miss. Here's a bunch of numbers to further explain it:
+2 252 SpA Magearna Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 196+ SpD Jirachi: 198-233 (49.1 - 57.8%) -- 59% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Shadow Ball vs. 248 HP / 196+ SpD Jirachi: 166-196 (41.1 - 48.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Jirachi Iron Head vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Magearna: 76-91 (25.2 - 30.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

We laugh at Mega Alakazam's physical defense so I'm not gonna show those. (Iron Head and U-turn is a 2HKO and Body Slam is a 3HKO)

Volcarona

Volcarona @ Firium Z/Bugnium Z
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Fire Blast
- Bug Buzz
- Hidden Power [Ground]

Basic Volcarona just blows this core away if it gets an opportunity to set up as it slaughters both Magearna and Mega Zam respectively with its STABs. Volcarona also can use a crippled Magearna as set up fodder if its SpA has dropped from using regular Fleur Cannon.

Also to Jordy, I think you should only archive the sets of mons and not the mon in general just so that people stop posting unviable sets like Passho Bulkarona and Wacan Steela. I have nothing against being creative and posting unique and underexplored sets but there's a difference between thinking outside the box creative and lol this set counters like one specific set that's not used that much anyway creative.

BackAtYouBro thanks for the suggestion, I'll start doing this from this round and onwards.

Excadrill @ Steelium Z
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Rapid Spin
- Swords Dance

Excadrill can revenge kill +2 Magearna under sand, and outspeeds Mega Alakazam as well, though, if it traces Sand Rush, it could prove to be a problem.

Threat of the Week:

: Hard checks both Pokemon very reliably, though it can be worn down quite fast.

Not Archived

None, nice job.

Round 32 Core: Tangrowth + Toxapex

Tangrowth @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpD / 8 Spe
Sassy Nature
- Giga Drain / Leaf Storm
- Knock Off
- Hidden Power Ice
- Earthquake / Sludge Bomb

Toxapex @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Scald
- Haze
- Recover
- Toxic / Toxic Spikes / Knock Off

  • Tangrowth + :blobpex: is the most powerful Regenerator core in the tier. They have amazing type synergy together, and switch into most of each others checks relatively comfortably.
  • Try to post only OU viable Pokémon and don't post sets specifically for this core, additionally your threat should not be complete deadweight against teams that do not feature the core of Tangrowth + Toxapex. Everyone have a good day!

This is heat.
"Slap Chop"

Protean Gren: if z dig or psychic, this thing is gonna beat both pex and tang if it gets the 50 50.

Torn T: if taunt z move (common on rain), it can handle this corr p nicely.

Latios-Mega (M) @ Latiosite
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Psychic
- Draco Meteor / Ice Beam
- Earthquake
- Recover

Latios has a relatively easy time switching into both Tangrowth and Toxapex. Probably the only thing it has to be wary of is getting poisoned by Tangrowth's Sludge Bomb, but other than that, Latios resists just about everything from the two 'mons and doesn't mind Toxic Spikes.

Reuniclus @ Psychium Z
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 212 Def / 44 Spe
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Acid Armor
- Psychic / Psyshock
- Recover

Reuni takes advantage of this core's passivity and sets up on it. Tang can't do anything to Reuni and is just used as a setup fodder, while Pex, since it isn't Payapa Berry, is OHKOed by +1 Z-Psychic or Z-Psyshock.

Pinsir @ Pinsirite
Ability: Hyper Cutter
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Frustration
- Earthquake
- Quick Attack

You come in on Tangrowth pretty safely, and can OHKO both members of the core with a +2 Frustration.

Volcarona @ Psychium Z
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Bug Buzz / Hidden Power Ground
- Psychic
- Quiver Dance

Psychium Volc dropped off a bit after this core fell in popularity, but now that the core's back, so is Volc. Tang dies to a +1 Fire Blast and Pex dies to a +1 Z-Psychic (or two +1 regular Psychics if the opponent successfully scouts the Z-Move).

Charizard Mega X.png
Charizard-Mega-X @ Charizardite X
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Roost
- Dragon Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Earthquake

This mon threatens this core, especially when it gets up a Dragon Dance beforehand - It's able to OHKO without a boost Tangrowth with a power Stab Flare Blitz and after +1 Toxapex has trouble to switchin directly into a Zard X, since you can Dragon Dance again on the predicted Pex switchin.

Calcs:
+1 252 Atk Charizard-Mega-X Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Toxapex: 226-268 (74.5 - 88.4%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
+1 252 Atk Tough Claws Charizard-Mega-X Flare Blitz vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Toxapex: 132-156 (43.5 - 51.4%) -- 63.7% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
252 Atk Charizard-Mega-X Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Toxapex: 152-180 (50.1 - 59.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery

Landorus-Therian @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Fly
- Gravity / Smack Down
- Stealth Rock / Swords Dance

Lando deals massive damage to Tangrowth and Toxapex with its STABs.

252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Toxapex: 270-318 (89.1 - 104.9%) -- 25% chance to OHKO after Black Sludge recovery (guaranteed OHKO after SR)
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 28 Def Tangrowth: 548-648 (135.6 - 160.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
