Torterra Discussion

So you want to take recoil damage from wood hammer and life orb damage at the same time? That is assuming you can actually tell when someone will have an ice attack, which you really can't what with everyone being so scared of Garchomp and Salamence. Those two survive because of their ability to swiftly nail things in one shot. Torterra doesn't have their attack or anywhere close to their speed, so the same stuff that's designed to stop Garchomp and Sala in their tracks will murder it.
First off, I wouldn't be using a Life Orb on this thing. It's purely physical attack-wise, and it would be negating its strong physical defense. What exactly stops 'Mence and Garchomp, anyway? I don't pay much attention to what goes on as far as the D/P metagame because I don't have it yet. Personally, I'd slap a CB on it or go with a seeding set.

I'm not saying it's OMGWTF Awesome, I'm saying that its weaknesses are exaggerated and not much enjoys its STAB attacks. In fact, the biggest problem I see with it is that 'Mence can switch in on it without much trouble, as it resists or is immune to its strongest attacks and Intimidate screws its offense.

Actually there was a moveset which occurs to me as somewhat feasible.

Torterra@Liechi Berry
-Rock Polish
-Sub
-Earthquake
-Seed Bomb/Wood Hammer

Its a grass reversaler! Actually Rock Polish is one of the redeeming things Torterra has as I'm pretty sure none of the other grasses have something similar.

On the bright side it can't be Sandstormed, bad side it can be Ice Sharded. But to be honest any one of this type of strat is dead to that.

Alternately theres also.

Torterra@Salac Berry
-Seed Bomb/Wood Hammer
-Earthquake/Stone Edge
-Swords Dance
-Substitute

Same concept again except Wood Hammer is less viable on this one but at least its more like to KO. Stone Edge over Earthquake is considerable seeing last thing you need is a Salamance ruining your sweep.

Fact is Torterra is the hardest hitting Growth user so it may be worth trying.

I like that a lot actually. Switch into Quakeslide and Sub, Rock Polish and Sub down two more times to sweep with Seed Bomb/EQ.
Woodhammer is a meh idea when you're under 25% life, of course. You might off yourself on a Blissey by accident.

Go with max speed/Jolly to get up to around 450 after the Rock Polish and that will leave you with 475 attack given 252 EVs.

---Firstly, I have no idea how to properly post a quote, so please roll with whatever ends up happening to this post.

My mind was running on basically the same lines as your's, (substitute, rock polish, earthquake, and woodhammer) However, any flying pokemon would completely destroy that move set. In my opinion it would be better to give it a rock attack instead of earthquake, but even then, all it really is, is a agility metagross with different weaknesses/defenses, and 26 less attack isn't it?

As a tank, it's use would really only go as far as, switching in on somthing that uses ground/rock moves, getting in an attack, and most-likely having to switch out due to the issue with its speed and weaknesses. Substitute could have some definate posibilities with the tank version- switch in, sub when your opponent switches, and get leech seed on his next pokemon. Light screen/earthquake, and seed bomb could make up the rest of its moveset

I still like the Rest/Sleep Talk/Wood Hammer/Stone Edge @ Life Orb set that I posted in an RMT some months back. Rest heals the recoil damage from both LO and Wood Hammer, and Sleep Talk lets it wall Tar even while it's asleep.

Honestly, why's everybody acting like its weaknesses are the end of the world? Torterra is one of the best new pokes this gen imo.

Torterra@Leftovers/Adamant
252 Def./156 att/100 HP
Leech seed
Earthquake
Stealth Rock
Curse

This is what i am using on my Pearl and it has worked out so far. Curse at the very least helps his Tanking abilities

The EVs are probably wrong but at least it can SR

Not to destroy your move set dreams, but Curse on Torterra would only work until any pokemon with an ice move decides to OHKO you. Also, you should devote EV's to somthing other than defense if you plan to use curse(which I would strongly advise against). I would say 252 Hp, 252 Sp. Defense, 6 whatever else you want.

Curse is there as filler since it Doesn't get the worlds best move pool. Curse was originally Wood Hammer anyways but I decided against it as it would KO him after a while. The EVs a terrible but it was 2 in the morning and I was cramming for a test so I couldn't think straight. Thanks for the suggestions though

Nice moveset, but the reason everyone is talking about its 4x weakness is because of its typing. Ice is going to play a pretty big role this gen. Garchomp, Togekiss, Salamence...Ice is a pretty good attacking type; it hits many things in OU (which is where this starter will most likely be), so having a 4x weak to Ice isn't that good unless you have to stats to "counter" it.

Light Screen could be used somwhat effectively on Torterra if it's combined with a decent move set.

Torterra @Leftovers
Overgrow
-Leech Seed
-Seed Bomb/Wood Hammer(with STAB, incredible damage{possibly OHKO} to any water pokemon)
-Substitute
-Light Screen(helps Torterra survive an ice attack, and helps all your other pokemon against special attacks)

Use light screen, if the opponent switches to a water pokemon that is likely to have an ice attack, you could Seed Bomb/Wood Hammer it, or more likely switch out. Light Screen could have some very nice results if used on the right team.
