Trainer Support v2
original by Portable Fridge

Trainer Support is a Pet Mod where submitters submit Trainers to the format. Each team consists of one trainer and six Pokemon. Trainers give a passive effect to the whole team, acting as a 2nd ability for all party members. Trainers can be from any official Pokemon media. Trainer Support is based on Gen 9 OU with Tera legal. Keep this in mind for submissions.
Submission Rules

  • Three submissions per player
  • Trainers can not benefit specific Pokemon.
  • Trainers are not Pokemon. They are abilities that the entire team has active.
  • Trainer abilities should be thematic to the trainer and have the connection explained.
  • Trainer variants (HGSS Misty and RBY Misty) are not allowed. You can't submit a different version of the same character. There are enough characters in Pokemon that we don't need repeats.
Name: [Insert the trainer's name]
Effect: [What does the trainer do?]
Description: [Why is the effect thematic for the trainer? What competitive purpose does the trainer provide for the meta?]

Name: Hop
Effect: Your Pokemon take and deal 1.3x damage with super effective moves.
Description: Did you already know about type advantages? Hop provides a big damage increase for mons with high type coverage, but makes their weaknesses more apparent.

Voting
  • You vote for your favorite 5 trainers.
  • Order doesn't matter.
  • Only one self-vote is allowed.
    • You can not self-vote as your only vote.
  • The three most voted trainers will be added to the meta.
  • If we don't get enough submissions, they might change.

roxanne.png

Name: Roxanne
Effect: All of your Pokemon's Rock-type moves have 1.3x accuracy and 1.1x power.
Description: Stone Edge and Rock Slide to your heart's content. Flavor-wise, Roxanne uses Rock-types and Rock-type moves tend to be inaccurate, allowing for Rock-types to be more effective at their job. There aren't that many great Rock-types in OU so this benefits Rock coverage more than actual Rock-types.

shauntal.png

Name: Shauntal
Effect: All of your Pokemon deal 1.2x damage to statused Pokemon.
Description: Shauntal is a Ghost-type trainer and Hex is a Ghost-type move. Shauntal allows status spam teams to deal more damage, making them even more potent. Toxic Spikes gaming.

candice.png

Name: Candice
Effect: All of your Pokemon take 0.75x damage from attacks if they are going to use an attack yet (Sucker Punch condition).
Description: Candice gives Avalanche as a TM, so her ability is flavored around it. Slow bulky attackers really appreciate this as they can underspeed fast mons and tank hits.

erika.png

Name: Erika
Effect: All Grass-type Pokemon heal 1/16 HP at the end of each turn.
Description: Grass Gym-Leader, Grassy Terrain effect. Trying to make Grass types more viable.

miriam.png

Name: Miriam
Effect: Moves crit on targets that are poisoned/badly poisoned.
Justification: Her ace is a Toxapex, known Merciless user. Merciless wasn't particularly good on Toxapex, but now the rest of the team can also benefit from it.

guzma.png

Name: Guzma
Effect: Bug moves have 1.2x power. User's pokemon switch out when HP falls below 50%.
Justification: Known Bug and Golisopod user. Also ran away from home. Volt-turn teams will appreciate somewhat, and could be interesting trying to work around or make use of the Emergency Exit.

cynthia-gen4.png

Name: Cynthia
Effect: Users Supereffective moves deal 1.2x damage
Justification: Cynthia’s teams have lots of coverage moves due to how Gen 4s ai worked (mostly random move picks) allowing her mons to be effective in many situations. This ability would be most useful on an offensive team that would regularly struggle with bulkier archetypes

guzma.png

Name: Guzma
Effect: Users bug types deal 1.3x damage on their first turn on the field (whenever fimp would register)
Justification: I looove volt turn

Name: Sabrina
sabrina-gen1.png

Effect:
Psychic Pokémon ignore Psychic immunity of Dark Pokémon and bypass a target's accuracy check; it's basically Miracle Eye. However, for balance purposes, targeted Dark Pokémon will receive 50% less damage from Psychic moves.

Description:
Sabrina is known for seeing into the future. Back in gen 2, Future Sight used to hit Dark Pokémon. With this trainer effect, you can revisit this approach and make Psy Spam more appealing, especially in a Dark dominated SV OU metagame. Fwiw, Sabrina's signature Pokémon Alakazam was one of the very, very few Pokémon able to naturally learn Miracle Eye in gen 4 where the move was introduced for the first time. Outside of Psy Spam, it's possible to combine Future Sight with a Fighting or Dark type attacker to better exert offensive pressure.

Name: Elesa
Effect: Electric Pokemon switch out the first time they use a damaging move. Once per battle, but on a Per pokemon basis.
Justification: Elesa uses Volt Switch as her TM move, so that's really about it. Makes the few good Electric-types have some unique interactions, though I think Raging Bolt using Thunderclap as a free switch is basically all of it.

malva.png

Name: Malva
Effect: User's Fire type Pokemon take damage as if they're a pure Dark Type
Description: This ability is based on the fact that as well as being the Fire-Type Elite 4 Member of Kalos, she was also part of the villainous Team Flare. This ability can help (certain Pokemon like Blaziken and Ceruledge benefit from being defensively taken as dark types) as well as hinder (you're now weak to bug types, as an example).

larry.png

Name: Larry
Effect: User's Normal and Flying type moves have their damage multiplied by 1.2x.
Description: Larry pulls double duty as Normal type gym leader and Flying type Elite 4 Member. His ability could help Espeeders like Dragonite and others.

flint.png

Name: Flint
Effect: User's Fire type attacks get a 1.2x boost if not done by a Fire type.
Description: Flint is supposed to be the Fire Type Gym Leader of the Sinnoh Elite 4. However, in Diamond and Pearl, he was notorious for only having 2 Fire-types, the rest of his mons having Fire-type coverage moves. Good for mons with a decent Fire-type coverage option.

I just wanna say I think this concept is super cool and I'm really looking forward to playing it.

1744231739271.png

Name
: Steven
Effect: All Pokemon on your team are immune to being buffeted by sand damage. Sand is also increased by two additional turns.
Description: Steven Stone is the fossil guy. While there's no fossil Pokemon in SV, you can embody the toughness of Steven's teams in the games who are all rock type or steel type. Steven is also kinda my guy. I think that this is a good addition to the tier as something you can't just slap onto teams, but something you have to build a team around. It's good, but niche, and I think that's good as it encourages you to build certain archetypes around your trainer, rather than just building a good team and picking a trainer that helps the most.

1744232838430.png

Name: Karen
Effect: Status moves have their accuracy increased by 1.2x
Description: Karen's set's typically have many status moves like stun spore, poison powder, that sort of stuff. This is kinda a quality of life buff to status inflicting across the board. Missing 90% wisps and toxic is annoying, and I think this fits with her playstyle in the games. 75% moves become 90% so you have a new "90%" accuracy benchmark.

I couldn't come up with a good Barry. Keeping the vetoed version here for the archives. Contemplating making headbutt and zen headbutt 50% stronger (105bp and 120bp respectively) but the only two mons that really care about that are Iron Boulder and Cinderace. Basically nothing else uses it so. Meh. It also is a really decent buff to both Boulder and Cinderace and neither really needs it.
1744232331223.png

Name: Barry
Effect: No longer take recoil damage from your own attacks (you still take crash damage from missed HJK and stuff)
Description: If you played DPP, Barry runs into you full speed like 10 times throughout the game and clearly has built up a tolerance to pain. This is embodied in his Pokemon.

1744235294735.png

Name: Cheryl
Effect: Healing from moves is multiplied by 1.2. (Anything affected by Triage)
Description: Cheryl's signature Blissey boosts healing effects to make up for the Softboiled PP it lost.

1744235266838.png

Name: Lance
Effect: Moves that require a recharge turn no longer require one if they land a KO.
Description: All of his Pokemon have Hyper Beam in gens 1 and 2, making him the best option to bring back its original effect.

1744235277402.png

Name: Anabel
Effect: Pokemon gain a stat multiplier status upon KOing a foe. There are different versions of the status depending on the Pokemon's highest stat between Atk, SpA, Def, and SpD at the time of the KO. The highest stat is multiplied by 1.3, and the other three stats are multiplied by 0.9. Pokemon can only have one of these statuses at a time.
Description: Anabel has an effect based on Ultra Beasts due to her position on the UB Task Force. It also fits due to her Frontier Brain team being a bit more offensive than the others.

Oh, boy, a new pet mod...of course, this one will have....
The famous....

Name: Ghetsis
Effect: Plasma Liberation - Every time one of your Pokémon faints, the opposing Pokémon switches out. Your opponent chooses which Pokémon to switch out to.
Description: Ghetsis wishes to liberate all Pokémon, so his ability works as if the enemy team is being liberated from their will!
The serviceable....

Name: Flannery
Effect: Burning Passion - All friendly Special Moves with 120 or less power gain +30 power, but lower the user's Special Attack by 2 stages upon use.
Description: Flannery gives out the TM for Overheat, so her ability makes most Special moves work just like it!
....and the downright obscure!

Name: Ruin Maniac Dusty
Effect: Dusted Discovery - For friendly Pokémon only, turns the move Sandstorm into Ancient Treasure. Ancient Treasure is a Ground-type Protect clone (+6 Priority) that additionally sets up Sandstorm.
Description: The Ruin Maniacs of Hoenn all use Sandshrew and Sandslash, so his ability is similar to Sand Veil, the only ability a Sandshrew could have at the time, in a way that doesn't invoke Evasion clause!

Vetoes
I'm extending submissions till tomorrow. You have until then to fix any of the stuff I vetoed.

Name: Sabrina
sabrina-gen1.png

Effect:
Psychic Pokémon ignore Psychic immunity of Dark Pokémon and bypass a target's accuracy check; it's basically Miracle Eye.

Sabrina: This is too strong. Nullifying an entire type immunity even if it is locked to only Psychic-types is extremely powerful. In this state, it would be vetoed. Make the effect weaker (such as hitting Dark-types for not very effective damage) or provide a downside of some kind.

larry.png

Name: Larry
Effect: User's Normal and Flying type moves have their damage multiplied by 1.2x. Does not stack if Pokemon is a Normal type Adaptability User or has Aerilate.
Description: Larry pulls double duty as Normal type gym leader and Flying type Elite 4 Member. His ability could help Espeeders like Dragonite and others.

flint.png

Name: Flint
Effect: User's Fire type attacks get STAB if not done by a Fire type.
Larry: While not a veto, specifying that it doesn't work on Normal Adaptability mons and Aerilate mons seems unnecessary. There are no Aerilate mons in the format and the best Normal-type Adaptability user is NU (Porygon-Z). I would recommend removing these downsides as they are unnecessary.
Flint: Flint would be vetoed. While it doesn't boost Fire-types themselves, providing an additional STAB move on any mon with Fire coverage is too much. Lower the boost or make it weaker in some other way.

Barry: Barry is going to be vetoed. Being able to spam 120 moves with no downside is an incredibly powerful effect. Hisuian Arcanine went from what would be a NU to PU level mon into a UU mon because of its access to Head Smash/Flare Blitz and Rock Head.

1744235294735.png

Name: Cheryl
Effect: Healing moves restore 20% more HP than they ordinarily would. (Anything affected by Triage)
Description: Cheryl's signature Blissey boosts healing effects to make up for the Softboiled PP it lost.

1744235277402.png

Name: Anabel
Effect: Pokemon gain a buff similar to Protosynthesis upon KOing a foe (1.3x to highest stat, 1.5x for Speed)
Description: Anabel has a weaker version of Beast Boost due to her position on the UB Task Force. It also fits due to her Frontier Brain team being a bit more offensive than the others. (If this seems too strong compared to other subs, the buff can be smaller. Copying proto just makes it easier to understand)
Cheryl: 70% healing on any mon with a healing move. Vetoed on the case of being too strong. Lower to a 10% increase or increase the boost and make it only affect draining moves.
Anabel: A Protosynthesis boost is too much of a boost. This will be vetoed as of right now. Nerf the boost to something weaker or provide a downside.
I'll be keeping an eye on Lance, but strong Normal stab has never been that great outside of Normal-types (which our best one is Ursaluna in UUBL).

Bug Catcher Charlie
Name: Bug Catcher Charlie (From FireRed and LeafGreen's Viridian Forest)
Effect: Did you know that Pokémon evolve? - If an unevolved friendly Bug-type Pokémon would be defeated, it instead evolves to its next stage and comes back to life at 50% health. If it has more than one evolution option, such as for Wurmple or Scyther, it will choose one at arandom. Only works once per Bug-type Pokémon.
Description: "Bug-type Pokémon evolve quickly. They're fun to use!"
Bug Catcher Charlie: The best unevolved Bug-type is Scyther, which resides in NU. The best Pokemon that could see use from this is not even slightly usable in the meta. Most people would rather run the evolved form since unevolved Bug-types tend to be terrible. Vetoed for having no place in the meta and sounding very difficult to code.

ooh boy i'm a smidge anxious
fisherman-gen3.png

Name: Fisherman Wade
Effect: Your non-Water Type Pokemon gain 1.2x times speed when under Rain. (It was hard to choose between 1.3x or 1.2x)
Description: Fisherman Wade has.. 6 Magikarp. Magikarp has Swift Swim. That's why his effect is similar to Swift Swim, but weaker, by a significant amount.
Competitive Evaluation: Allows just a bit more variety when it comes to Rain teams. Doesn't buff Water types for mostly balancing reasons, but Overqwil isn't affected, so that's good!

1744311820771.png

Name: Lorekeeper Zinnia
Effect: Flying-type Pokemon take 3/4 damage from Super Effective attacks. This effect ends if weather is active.
Description: Zinnia is the new trainer introduced in ORAS for the Delta Episode, connecting her deeply to Mega Rayquaza. The effect of Delta Stream is too strong, so here is a version that still helps Flying-types out a bit.
Competitive Evaluation: Enjoy having your Flying-type weaknesses reduced, there are several solid Flying types, and a handful that would be a lot better if they were just a bit tankier.

1744312173057.png

Name: Arcade Star Dahlia
Effect: Moves/abilities that apply field effects (weather or terrain) last for 8 turns instead of 5 turns, without requiring the relevant held items (the held items have no additional effect.)
Description: Do you remember the Battle Arcade? One of the events of the Battle Frontier, each battle had a chance to apply a random effect from a roulette onto you, your opponent, or the field. Sadly the RNG element of it seemed a bit too much, but one of the things about the battle arcade is that whenever one of these effects came up, it lasted for the entire fight. Now, in the modern meta that would be a bit much, so increasing the maximum number instead feels like a sensible approach. Taking the weathers that were already on the roulette, and adding terrains (which likely would have been there if done in a modern game) and you have the options we set out here.
Competitive Evaluation: Enjoy your weather or terrain teams having that much more of a kick to them.

167px-VSIono.png

Name: Iono
Effect: Pokemon become charged on entry, increasing the power of their next Electric-type attack.
Description: Similar to her signature Pokemon, Bellibolt's, signature ability.
Competitive Evalution: Volt Switch spam galore! Can also also used for wall breaking, or giving a Scarfer a little extra power for revenge killing.

240px-Brilliant_Diamond_Shining_Pearl_Crasher_Wake.png
Name: Crasher Wake
Effect: Water type moves used by the team are multiplied by 1.3 in power if used against a target with 50% of their maximum HP or less.
Description: Crasher Wake gives out the TM Brine, which doubles in power if target is 50% HP or less. This applies this same principle just weaker to all water type moves on a whole. This is really potent on Rain structures in particular but any team centered around offensive Water types would love this.

1744337501401.png

Name: Wulfric
Effect: Ice-type Pokémon of both sides that didn’t used a move yet, or is switching-in, will receive 30% less damage from neutral hits.
Description: Wulfric is described as tough as an iceberg, and he boasted that Ice-type Pokémon are incredibly hard yet extremely fragile at the same time. His effect can be used to reflect that, allowing the user’s slow Ice-type Pokémon to tank hits on switch-ins and make slow Ice Pokémon in general with few resistances suddenly gain a lot of pseudo-resists, at cost of the opponent also benefitting it and can even backfire if the player have all their own Ice Pokémon fainted but the opponent’s does not.

(Partially inspired by Keisberg’s Eternal Ice, an Ability I am proud of creating.)

Second veto phase because I did it too early. I'll make sure to slow it down for next time. I'll close submissions tomorrow so get your fixes and last minute submissions in.

1744312173057.png

Name: Arcade Star Dahlia
Effect: Moves/abilities that apply field effects (weather, terrain, Trick Room, etc) last for 8 turns instead of 5 turns, without requiring the relevant held items (the held items have no additional effect.)
Description: Do you remember the Battle Arcade? One of the events of the Battle Frontier, each battle had a chance to apply a random effect from a roulette onto you, your opponent, or the field. Sadly the RNG element of it seemed a bit too much, but one of the things about the battle arcade is that whenever one of these effects came up, it lasted for the entire fight, even for things like Trick Room. Now, in the modern meta that would be a bit much, so increasing the maximum number instead feels like a sensible approach.
Competitive Evaluation: Enjoy your weather or terrain teams, or maybe Trick Room will be that much more viable.

1744315324157.png

Name: Aether President Lusamine
Effect: All Pokemon have the effect of the ability Beast Boost. The Pokemon cannot already have the ability Beast Boost or Moxie, nor the abilities Quark Drive/Protosynthesis. (In an Ubers/AG meta, this effect also does not apply to Koraidon/Midraidon/Spectrier/Glastrier/Calyrex-Ice/Calyrex-Shadow.)
Description: Beast Boost is a great ability. And Lusamine has spent her career searching for Ultra Beasts. So it makes sense to give that power to Pokemon used by her.
Competitive Evaluation: Hey, a free +1 is a free +1. Balanced out so you cannot have a Pokemon getting double boosts, or Proto boost + Beast Boosts.
Dahlia: Passive Trick Room extender. Make it not affect TR or this will be vetoed.
Lusamine: Broken for the same reasons Anabel was before her nerf. Needs fixing or vetoed.

Iono: This is far too strong of an effect. Every Pokemon getting a 1.5x boost to their first Electric move each switch in is far too strong. M4A has the ability Tempestuous which only provides charge on one Pokemon when replacing a fainted ally and it is really strong. This is definitely vetoed in this version.

Name: Ruin Maniac Dusty
Effect: Dusted Discovery - During a Sandstorm, all enemy attacks with 80% or less accuracy lose 10% of their accuracy. Attacks with 81% or more Accuracy are unaffected, even when accounting accuracy drops or evasion increases.
Description: The Ruin Maniacs of Hoenn all use Sandshrew and Sandslash, so his ability is similar to Sand Veil, the only ability a Sandshrew could have at the time, in a way that doesn't invoke Evasion clause!
Ruin Maniac: Random accuracy drop effect. Vetoed because random accuracy drop shenanigans are not interesting.

iono.png

Iono
Effect: When an allied Pokemon is hit by a move, they gain the Charge effect. This only works once per Pokemon.
Description: I don't think I really need to explain the flavor here, but Iono's signature Pokemon is Bellibolt, which as the Electromophosis ability. However, I think this iteration is a lot more balanced, and also works well with Gen 9's Tera type theme, and is a lot more directly referenced to the ability that inspired it, than just getting it for free. This effect can bring a lot of power to the team, but you only get it once per mon, and can be easily lost if you're forced to switch. This theoretically only gives one more use than M4A's Tempestuous, but unlike Mega Jolteon, you have to take a hit first to get it, rather than the opposite of getting a free (post-death) switch to come in with.

Also unlike Mega Jolteon, this effect is spread throughout the entire team, rather than repeatedly using it on one mon. Which means that in order to get full value, all Pokemon in your team would need to have an Electric move. Much more well-rounded teams can use this effect to most fully support the key abusers, or you can focus on maximizing Iono's value at the cost of limiting your coverage a bit. That being said, it's not just Electric type Pokemon that can use this. Iono's own Mismagius Charge Beam is a good example (though obviously not a meta one). Strong Ice-type attackers with even moderate or weak Electric coverage can use Iono to tremendous effect. Electric is already a strong coverage type, especially for any Pokemon whose real STAB beats Ground, so getting a one-time pseudo-STAB and power boost on the Electric move is very useful for trainers who are capable of managing their team and switch-ins well. Iono would likely find the most use on hard offense styles, but well thought out balance teams could use this quite effectively as well.

erika.png

Erika
Effect: Boosts the healing of all draining moves, as well as Strength Sap, Leech Seed, Ingrain, and Aqua Ring by 30%. (Big Root effect).
Description: Thought this was a bit more interesting mechanically than just flat healing. Big Root is a fun item in concept, but it's underpowered mostly because... well, it takes the item slot. Damage boosts would also serve as a heal boost for draining moves which makes them better, and leftovers provides more than boosting the three passive regen options. But with Erika, you can have the best of both worlds! Additionally, while the effect is very grass themed, there are a lot of good and viable draining moves that are not grass type, and so the user can actually have a pretty good diversity of types to abuse this with. It's also not a general Grass-type theme for Erika, either - in PTCGP she is a healer for Grass Pokemon, and in the games most of her teams have several different options affected by this, with Mega Drain, Giga Drain, Ingrain, and Leech Seed all appearing one or multiple times across the generations, and often multiple times on different pokemon on the same team.
