Triples
Remember the Triple Battle format from Gens 5 and 6? Want to see Regidrago nuke 3 of your opponents with Dragon Energy at once? Think Doubles doesn't have enough Pokemon on the field? In this metagame, 3 Pokémon are out on the field for each side simultaneously in a 6v6 battle. This leads to new strategies that branch further from Doubles.
Mechanics:
- 3 Pokemon are on the field at once.
- You can shift to bring a pokemon from the left or right side towards the center instead of clicking a move. This will keep their current boosts and other volatile effects and does not count as switching the Pokemon out.
- Pokemon moves have ranges you need to keep in mind. Moves like Earthquake or Rock Slide cannot attack nonadjacent pokemon on the field.
- Most abilities that affect allies or multiple pokemon only apply to Pokemon that are adjacent.
- Like in Doubles, spread moves deal 25% less damage when targeting multiple Pokemon on the field.
Banlist:
Pokemon: Annihilape, Arceus, Calyrex-Ice, Calyrex-Shadow, Darkrai, Dialga, Dialga-Origin, Eternatus, Flutter Mane, Giratina, Giratina-Origin, Groudon, Ho-Oh, Indeedee, Indeedee-F, Koraidon, Kyogre, Kyurem-Black, Kyurem-White, Lugia, Lunala, Magearna, Mewtwo, Miraidon, Necrozma-Dawn-Wings, Necrozma-Dusk-Mane, Palkia, Palkia-Origin, Rayquaza, Reshiram, Solgaleo, Terapagos, Urshifu, Urshifu-Rapid-Strike, Zacian, Zacian-Crowned, Zamazenta, Zamazenta-Crowned, Zekrom
Abilities: Moody, Shadow Tag
Items: Bright Powder, King's Rock, Razor Fang
Clauses: Standard Doubles, Evasion Abilities Clause
- Endless Battle Clause: Players cannot use any moveset on any Pokémon capable of intentionally causing an endless battle.
- Evasion Clause: Players cannot use the moves Double Team or Minimize.
- OHKO Clause: Players cannot use the moves Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill, or Sheer Cold.
- Species Clause: Players cannot have two Pokémon with the same Pokédex number on the same team.
- Gravity Sleep Clause: Sleep moves with below one hundred percent accuracy may not be used in conjunction with Gravity.
Strategy:
Triples will function similarly to Doubles, but the center slot will be incredibly important, as it can hit all 3 of the opposing Pokemon with powerful spread moves such as Eruption or Expanding Force. This is further boosted by mindgames from being able to shift out of an unfortunate position and still being able to attack. Flying types, certain special Fighting Types, special Dark types will get buffed as most of their moves can hit any pokemon, even ones typically out of range, with Flying STAB, Aura Sphere, Dark Pulse, respectively. Wide Guard will be incredibly useful to counteract common spread moves.
FAQs:
What's the list of moves that target any Pokemon on the field, including non-adjacent Pokemon?
Acrobatics, Aerial Ace, Aeroblast, Air Slash, Aura Sphere, Bounce, Brave Bird, Dark Pulse, Dragon Ascent, Dragon Pulse, Drill Peck, Fly, Flying Press, Gust, Heal Bell, Heal Pulse, Hurricane, Magnetic Flux, Peck, Perish Song, Pluck, Sky Attack, Water Pulse, and Wing Attack
Why is Commander legal, and why did it not work when I used it?
Commander is currently not programmed to function in Triples, as Triples doesn't exist in Gen 9.
Do ruin abilities affect nonadjacent Pokemon?
Yes. Yes they do.
What happens when the remaining two Pokemon are nonadjacent?
They automatically shift into the center.
Can you terastallize and shift in the same action?
No.
Why is sleep legal?
The same reasons why sleep is legal in doubles.
