Tyranitar

Overview
########

With good Attack, Special Attack, and bulk, Tyranitar has a lot going for it. What's more, its ability Sand Stream induces sand upon switching in, which boosts Tyranitar's Special Defense. Sand is seen as a neutral weather, as it neither boosts nor weakens any types offensively; there is also a lack of Pokemon able to take advantage of sand in VGC. Because of this, Tyranitar is often used to take on opposing weather setters, mainly Mega Charizard Y. Tyranitar has an extensive movepool, which, along with its stats, allows it to play multiple roles, including that of a special attacker and a Dragon Dance sweeper. While Tyranitar's Speed may seem lacking when compared to its other stats, it is enough for Tyranitar to effectively use a Choice Scarf. Tyranitar is also blessed with an incredibly powerful Mega Evolution. With a base 164 Attack stat, Mega Tyranitar hits incredibly hard, and with massive 100 / 150 / 120 bulk, it can be very difficult to take down.

It is important to know that most Dragon Dance-lacking Tyranitar should be special attackers due to the many Intimidate and Will-O-Wisp users in the metagame. Tyranitar's Rock / Dark typing leaves it with seven weaknesses, four of which are common. While Tyranitar's movepool gives it a lot of options, to effectively use them, Tyranitar must compromise STAB moves for coverage moves or vice versa, leaving it unable to win certain match-ups it otherwise could. Without a Choice Scarf, Tyranitar is relatively slow, leaving it vulnerable to opposing attackers. Most importantly, Tyranitar is complete setup fodder for Power-Up Punch Mega Kangaskhan.

Special Attacker
########
name: Special Attacker
move 1: Rock Slide / Stone Edge
move 2: Fire Blast / Ice Beam
move 3: Dark Pulse / Ice Beam
move 4: Protect
ability: Sand Stream
item: Life Orb
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Modest

Moves
========

Tyranitar usually opts for Rock Slide over Stone Edge, as it can usually OHKO Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame even with an Attack-lowering nature and it being a spread move. If Tyranitar moves before both foes, Rock Slide also has a 46% chance to get at least one flinch. However, because Rock Slide is a spread move, its damage output is reduced, and Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame can be EVed to survive the hit, so Stone Edge can be used to ensure that they are both OHKOed. Stone Edge has other advantages over Rock Slide; for instance, it can bypass Wide Guard and 2HKO defensive Sitrus Berry Rotom-H. Fire Blast is used to hit Steel-types, such as Ferrothorn and Mega Mawile, both of which would be able to beat Tyranitar otherwise. For Tyranitar's secondary STAB move, Dark Pulse is used, as it threatens Ghost- and Psychic-types and generally has good neutral coverage. Protect is an important move for Tyranitar, though Tyranitar has a high damage output, it is relatively slow and therefore requires its teammates to take down the foes that threaten it; Protect buys a free turn to allow for this to happen. Ice Beam allows Tyranitar to better check Dragon-types and can be used over either Fire Blast or Dark Pulse. Like Fire Blast, Ice Beam hits Grass-types for super effective damage, but Tyranitar loses the ability to deal important damage to Steel-types if Ice Beam is used over Fire Blast, and Tyranitar will lose reliable damage if Ice Beam is used instead of Dark Pulse. Alternatively, Tyranitar could use the moves Dark Pulse / Ice Beam / Fire Blast / Protect, which would allow it to have its desired special coverage, but it would lose its ability to counter Talonflame and Mega Charizard Y.

Set Details
========

While Tyranitar could use a more complex spread, it primarily needs to hit as hard and fast as possible; the given spread achieves this. A Modest nature allows Tyranitar to hit harder; however, a Timid nature allows Tyranitar to outspeed a few other Pokemon, such as uninvested base 100s. Life Orb boosts the power of Tyranitar's attacks so that it can hit harder than it otherwise would. Tyranitar's ability Sand Stream automatically induces sand, which allows Tyranitar to check opposing weather teams. Unnerve has a low scope of use and Sand Stream is one of the main reasons to use Tyranitar.

Usage Tips
========

A lot of Tyranitar's utility is in its ability to shut down opposing weather teams; if the opponent has a weather inducer, it might be worth bringing Tyranitar in when the opponent's weather is set up. Because of Tyranitar's sheer power and coverage, it can be used to KO Pokemon to allow its teammates to have an easier time, making Tyranitar a decent lead option.

Team Options
========

Talonflame is a decent partner for Tyranitar, being able to OHKO most Grass- and Fighting-types, many of Tyranitar's common checks. Talonflame can also be used to deal damage and ensure that Tyranitar can pick up KOs it would otherwise miss out on; for Talonflame to be able to perform this role consistently, it should run Choice Band to have the highest damage output possible. In addition, Talonflame can also set up Tailwind, which bolsters Tyranitar's otherwise mediocre Speed stat to the point where it can outspeed most other Pokemon. Rotom-W supports Tyranitar by being able to check Ground- and Water-types, which give Tyranitar problems, and spread burns with Will-O-Wisp. While Tyranitar can check opposing weather teams, it won't win these match-ups by itself; Rotom-H and Ludicolo can check sun and rain, respectively, while individually supporting Tyranitar. Rotom-H spreads burns with Will-O-Wisp and allows Tyranitar to run Ice Beam without hurting the team's overall coverage by running Overheat. Ludicolo, on the other hand, provides Fake Out support and is able to threaten Water- and Ground-types with its STAB moves. Aegislash beats Mega Kangaskhan and Fighting-types, which both seriously threaten Tyranitar. Aegislash also provides Wide Guard support, which blocks super effective Earthquakes. Trick Room setters, such as Gardevoir and Gourgeist-XL, can be used to support Tyranitar. Gardevoir beats both offensive and defensive Fighting-types and can spread burns. While Gourgeist-XL cannot beat Fighting-types offensively, it works great with Tyranitar because it can spread burns and is immune to Fighting-type moves.

Dragon Dance
########
name: Dragon Dance
move 1: Crunch
move 2: Rock Slide
move 3: Dragon Dance
move 4: Protect
ability: Sand Stream
item: Tyranitarite / Weakness Policy / Lum Berry
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly / Adamant

Moves
========

Few Pokemon resist Tyranitar's STAB combination of Crunch and Rock Slide. Dragon Dance is the main reason to run physical Tyranitar, as it boosts both Tyranitar's Attack and Speed and solves two of Tyranitar's problems: its relatively low Speed and Intimidate's Attack drop. Protect is crucial to this set, as with Dragon Dance boosts, Tyranitar is likely to be double targeted to prevent it from sweeping; Protect blocks these attacks and allows Tyranitar's ally to remove the threat.

Set Details
========

Mega Tyranitar can use a bulkier spread of 180 HP / 12 Atk / 132 Def / 4 SpD / 180 Spe with a Jolly nature, which is never 2HKOed by Garchomp's Earthquake after Mega Evolving or OHKOed by bulky Mega Mawile's Play Rough. After going for Dragon Dance once, Tyranitar will be able to outspeed opposing Choice Scarf Tyranitar, as well as 2HKO Garchomp with Crunch. Tyranitar has the rare combination of enough weaknesses with good enough bulk to make use of Weakness Policy, which boosts Tyranitar's Attack two stages when hit by a super effective move. While Lum Berry gives Tyranitar no offensive advantages like the other two items do, it lets Tyranitar set up on Pokemon such as Rotom-H and Gengar, which would otherwise be able to burn Tyranitar with Will-O-Wisp. On top of that, Lum Berry improves Tyranitar's match-up with Smeargle, which can otherwise outspeed Tyranitar and put it to sleep with Dark Void. Lum Berry can also be used to remove the confusion from Swagger; Tyranitar can take advantage of this by having an ally, such as Meowstic, use Swagger on it, giving it the Attack boosts but not the confusion. A Jolly nature is almost required on non-Mega Tyranitar to allow +1 Tyranitar to outspeed Garchomp, as with an Adamant nature, +1 Tyranitar will only Speed tie with Garchomp.

Usage Tips
========

Tyranitar can be played as a lead with either Amoonguss or Meowstic, as they can both aid Tyranitar with setting up. By leading with both Tyranitar and Amoonguss or Meowstic, there is a decreased risk of switching them in later in the battle. Tyranitar can also be kept in the back until the Pokemon which threaten it have been KOed, allowing it to sweep late-game.

Team Options
========

Amoonguss has access to Rage Powder, which redirects moves away from Tyranitar. This allows Tyranitar to set up without worrying about Will-O-Wisp from the common Rotom formes or super effective moves from Pokemon such as Gardevoir. Meowstic and Klefki can both set up Reflect, Light Screen, and Safeguard with Prankster, allowing Tyranitar to set up without worrying about status moves or taking a large amount of damage. Talonflame can OHKO most Fighting-types, Scrafty being the rare exception, spread Will-O-Wisp to shut down physical attackers, and use Taunt to prevent status moves from affecting Tyranitar. Aegislash is immune to Fighting-type moves and can block spread moves such as Earthquake and Dazzling Gleam with Wide Guard, aiding Tyranitar in setting up.

Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Rock Slide / Stone Edge
move 2: Dark Pulse
move 3: Fire Blast
move 4: Ice Beam
ability: Sand Stream
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Timid

Moves
========

Rock Slide OHKOes Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame even with a Timid nature. Stone Edge is a more powerful option which OHKOes Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame even when Tyranitar is burned; it also bypasses Wide Guard, ensuring that Tyranitar will get the necessary OHKOs. Both of these Rock-type moves threaten Fire-types in general. Dark Pulse is Tyranitar's secondary STAB move, hitting Ghost-types for super effective damage. Fire Blast hits Steel-types for super effective damage, which would otherwise be able to completely wall this set. Ice Beam OHKOes Dragon-types such as Garchomp and Salamence.

Set Details
========

Tyranitar should run max Special Attack and Speed investment to ensure that it hits as hard and fast as possible. With Choice Scarf and a Timid nature, Tyranitar will outspeed max Speed base 115s. Alternatively, running 228 Speed EVs or a Modest nature ensures that Tyranitar is slower than Modest Choice Scarf Politoed, allowing Tyranitar to set up sand after Politoed sets up rain. With 228 Speed EVs and a Timid nature, Tyranitar won't outspeed base 115s Speed, but it will still outspeed Mega Lucario. With a Modest nature, Tyranitar will outspeed Pokemon with base 100 Speed but will only Speed tie with Garchomp.

Usage Tips
========

Choice Scarf Tyranitar plays well as a lead to pick up a surprise KO at the start of a game, often ending up acting as a hit-and-run Pokemon. It plays well late-game, as it can easily pick off weakened Pokemon with its strong coverage moves.

Team Options
========

Choice Scarf Tyranitar requires more offensive support than other sets due to its lack of Protect. Talonflame can easily pick off Fighting- and Steel-types with Brave Bird and Flare Blitz, respectively; because Tyranitar can perform the latter role with Fire Blast, having Talonflame support means that Tyranitar can choose to be locked into a different move. Rotom-W can spread burns with Will-O-Wisp and generally threaten Water-types with Thunderbolt. Rotom-H and Ludicolo help Tyranitar beat opposing sun and rain setters, respectively. Aegislash and other Ghost-types are immune to Fighting-type moves and generally enjoy Tyranitar's coverage.

Other Options
########

Tyranitar has a significant number of other options. Assault Vest can boost Tyranitar's Special Defense to the point where it is capable of taking Mega Lucario's Aura Sphere in sand. The additional Special Defense also lets Tyranitar better check weather, especially rain. Assault Vest Tyranitar requires slightly more team support, however, as it is unable to run Protect. Because of Tyranitar's low base Speed stat, it can perform well in Trick Room; if you want to run Tyranitar on a Trick Room team, simply opt for max HP instead of Speed investment and a Quiet nature. Go for Protect on the turn that Trick Room is set up, ensuring that Tyranitar will be able to make use of Trick Room. Flamethrower is a weaker but more accurate version of Fire Blast; it should only be used for this consistency, as the loss in power is noticeable. Tyranitar can make use of Choice Specs, which allows it to hit significantly harder than it could with Life Orb and make better use of a more reliable move such as Flamethrower, but it loses the ability to switch moves. Ancient Power is a very weak special Rock-type move which should primarily be used on Choice Specs sets, as it is unaffected by Intimidate and burns, so Tyranitar will be able to consistently OHKO Talonflame and Mega Charizard Y.

Both Choice Scarf and Choice Specs sets can make use of Sleep Talk to allow Tyranitar to act as a sleep absorber and continue being useful even if it is put to sleep. Tyranitar can make use of certain Berries, most notably Roseli, Chople, and Shuca Berries, which weaken Fairy-, Fighting-, and Ground-type moves respectively. While these Berries mean that Tyranitar can't make use of other potentially more useful items, they ensure that Tyranitar will be able to use at least one attack. A slow, bulky special attacking set with an EV spread of 252 HP / 148 Def / 108 SpA and a Quiet nature and Leftovers is possible, using the same moves as the special attacking set. However, this set is somewhat inferior to the Assault Vest set in its ability to take hits, though if used correctly, it can have better longevity. Tyranitar has access to Taunt, which can be used to shut down Pokemon that are reliant on non-damaging moves, such as Aegislash. Taunt can be hard to fit into sets, however, as Tyranitar is fairly reliant on its coverage moves. Tyranitar has access to Thunder Wave and Rock Tomb, two forms of speed control. Thunder Wave quarters the foe's Speed and has a chance to paralyze the foe and potentially prevent it from moving. Rock Tomb is a single-target damaging Rock-type move that lowers the foe's Speed stat by one stage, but this drop is lost after switching out. Snarl is a Dark-type spread move which lowers the foes' Special Attack stat by one stage. Snarl should be used for its support value rather than as a primary attack, as it is far weaker than other Dark-type moves, so it should only be opted for on bulky sets, like the Assault Vest set, which can afford the drop in power.

Checks & Counters
########

**Water-types**: Politoed induces rain. Though Tyranitar is normally slower than Politoed, Rain Dance is a common move on Politoed and ensures that the rain is set up against Tyranitar. Kingdra, a Pokemon that is common on rain teams, is capable of OHKOing Tyranitar in the rain. Rotom-W is able to burn Tyranitar, crippling physically offensive variants, and Hydro Pump does decent damage to non-Mega Tyranitar.

**Fairy-types**: Fairy-types, Azumarill in particular, can check Tyranitar. Azumarill can take any hit from Tyranitar and either retaliate with a Play Rough or set up Belly Drum. Gardevoir is capable of 2HKOing Tyranitar in the sand with Moonblast and can also potentially burn physical sets. Mega Mawile fears Fire Blast from Tyranitar, but won't OHKO it unless Tyranitar is a Choice Specs variant, and Mawile can OHKO back with Play Rough.

**Ground-types**: Ground-types, such as Mamoswine and Garchomp, threaten Tyranitar with their powerful STAB Earthquake. Garchomp, however, must be wary of Tyranitar that invest enough in bulk to survive an Earthquake, as Ice Beam will OHKO it in return.

**Grass-types**: Mega Venusaur can take any hit from special Tyranitar, and between Leech Seed, Synthesis, and Giga Drain, Mega Venusaur is capable of healing off any damage. Similarly, Assault Vest Ludicolo deals with the special sets, being able to recover health with Giga Drain or hit Tyranitar hard with Hydro Pump. Both of these Pokemon don't fare so well against Dragon Dance Tyranitar, however. Ferrothorn beats Dragon Dance Tyranitar, as it can OHKO non-Mega variants with Power Whip and OHKO +1 Mega Tyranitar with Gyro Ball. Ferrothorn also deals with Choice Scarf Tyranitar not locked into Fire Blast.

**Fighting-types and Fighting-type Coverage Moves**: Most physical Fighting-type moves can easily OHKO Tyranitar. Mega Lucario resists Tyranitar's dual STAB combination and can OHKO Tyranitar with either Close Combat or Aura Sphere. Similarly, Scrafty resists Tyranitar's STAB moves and can OHKO Tyranitar with Drain Punch, simultaneously healing off any damage it has taken in the process. Fighting-type coverage moves, such as Power-Up Punch or Hammer Arm from Mega Kangaskhan and the rare Sacred Sword from Aegislash will quickly dispatch Tyranitar.

**Status Conditions**: Status conditions cripple certain sets, for instance the Dragon Dance set will have a hard time sweeping if it is burned. The Choice Scarf set, and to a lesser extent the Dragon Dance set, are rendered near useless if paralyzed, as they are hugely focused towards Speed.

[Pros]
  • Good Attack and Special Attack.
  • Good bulk Special Defense boosted by sand.
  • Starts sand automatically, sand is seen as a neutral weather.
  • Good Movepool.
  • Choice Scarf is good with its coverage and alright Speed.
  • Mega Evolution boosts bulk, Attack, and Speed higher. Base 164 Attack and 100 HP / 150 Def / 120 SpD.
  • Good enough bulk to use Dragon Dance effectively.
  • Hard checks Mega Charizard Y, counters if Mega Tyranitar.
[Cons]
  • Seven weaknesses, four of which are common.
  • Compromises STAB for coverage, or vice versa.
  • Relatively slow without a Choice Scarf.
  • Complete set up fodder for Mega Kangaskhan

Special Attacker
########
name: Special Attacker
move 1: Rock Slide / Stone Edge
move 2: Fire Blast / Ice Beam
move 3: Dark Pulse / Ice Beam
move 4: Protect
ability: Sand Stream
item: Life Orb
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Modest

Moves
========
  • Rock Slide OHKOes Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame, even with a negative nature. Generally threatens Fire-types.
  • Stone Edge can be used over Rock Slide to OHKO Talonflame and Mega Charizard Y even if burned, it will also hit Rotom-H significantly harder than Rock Slide.
  • Fire Blast hits Steal-types like Mega Mawile and Ferrothorn.
  • Dark Pulse is a secondary STAB move hits Ghost- and Psychic-types and has good Neutral coverage.
  • Ice Beam could be run over Fire Blast or Dark Pulse. Ice Beam hits Grass-types like Fire Blast, but it hits Dragon-types unlike Fire Blast but loses out on hitting Steal-types. It could also be used over Dark Pulse.
  • Protect
  • Dark Pulse / Ice Beam / Fire Blast / Protect set works as well.
Set Details
========
  • Standard 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe spread with a Life Orb is possible.
  • Modest nature allows Tyranitar to hit as hard as possible.
  • Timid nature lets Tyranitar be faster.
  • Life Orb boosts the power of Tyranitar's attacks.
Usage Tips
========
  • If the opposing team has a their own weather inducer it might be wise to have Tyranitar in the back to remove their weather.
  • Because of its coverage and power Tyranitar it can be used to clear the way for other Pokemon.
  • Tyranitar is can be used as a lead to threaten the opponent offensively from turn one.
Team Options
========
  • Talonflame can threatens Fighting-types.
  • Rotom-W spreads burns and threatens Water-types with Thunderbolt.
  • Rotom-H and Ludicolo threaten sun and rain respectively which can aid Tyranitar in shutting down opposing weather.
  • Aegislash is immune to Fighting-type moves and enjoys Tyranitar's coverage.
  • Trick Room setters like Gardevoir and Gourgeist can be used to support Tyranitar, although these are by no means a must.
Dragon Dance
########
name: Dragon Dance
move 1: Crunch
move 2: Rock Slide
move 3: Dragon Dance
move 4: Protect
ability: Sand Stream
item: Tyranitarite / Weakness Policy / Lum Berry
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly / Adamant

Moves
========
  • Dual STAB.
  • Dragon Dance boosts Attack and Speed allowing it to be very threatening.
  • With Tyranitar's Boosts it will be a big target for the opponent making Protect a must on this set.
Set Details
========
  • Bulkier spread for Mega Tyranitar, 180 HP / 12 Atk / 132 Def / 4 SpD / 180 Spe with a Jolly Nature this spread is never 2HKOed by Jolly Garchomp, or OHKOed by bulky Mega Mawile whilst 252 Adamant has a 3/16 chance to OHKO with Iron Head. At Plus one you outspeed Choice Scarf Tyranitars, and 2HKO Garchomp with Crunch.
  • Tyranitar has good enough bulk to use Weakness Policy and enough common weaknesses to not have to worry about the item being wasted.
  • Jolly nature is almost required on non Mega Tyranitar, however, with an Adamant you will just outspeed positive natured base 100s but speedtie with Garchomp.
  • A Lum Berry will allow Tyranitar to set up on Pokemon like Rotom-H which would otherwise be able to burn it and cripple Tyranitar. It also allows Tyranitar to be less scared of Dark Void Smeargle. Swagger + Lum Berry.
Usage Tips
========
  • Tyranitar can be lead off with Amoonguss or Meowstic as they both aid Tyranitar with setting up. By leading with them you don't have to bring them later in the game.
  • Tyranitar can also be kept in the back till the Pokemon which can beat it have been take care of, and then brought in for a late game sweep.
Team Options
========
  • Amoonguss has Rage Powder to redirect moves targeting Tyranitar, this allows it to either set up safely or take out the threat.
  • Meowstic and Klefki can set up Reflect, Light Screen, and Safeguard allowing Tyranitar to Dragon Dance without having to worry about having to take large amounts of damage.
  • As above.
Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Dark Pulse
move 2: Rock Slide / Stone Edge
move 3: Fire Blast
move 4: Ice Beam
ability: Sand Stream
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Timid

Moves
========
  • Ice Beam OHKOes Dragon-types like Garchomp and Salamence.
Set Details
========
  • Max Speed and Special Attack.
  • With a Choice Scarf Timid nature lets you outspeed max Speed base 115s.
  • A Modest nature lets you outspeed max Speed base 100s but you will speedtie with Garchomp.
Usage Tips
========
  • Choice Scarf Tyranitar can be used as a lead to pick up a surprise KO at the start of the game with its coverage.
  • Hit and run, outspeed a threat and pick up a KO and switch out.
  • With a Choice Scarf Tyranitar can come in late game and outspeed common Pokemon and clean up with an appropriate coverage moves.
Team Options
========
  • Talonflame can threatens Fighting-types.
  • Rotom-W spreads burns and threatens Water-types with Thunderbolt.
  • Pokemon which can beat weather like Rotom-H and Ludicolo threaten sun and rain respectively which can aid Tyranitar in shutting down opposing weather.
  • Aegislash and Ghost-types in general are immune to Fighting-type moves and enjoys Tyranitar's coverage.

Other Options
########
  • Assault Vest.
  • Flamethrower is more accurate but weaker than Fire Blast
  • Choice Specs significantly more powerful than Life Orb but can't switch moves.
  • Ancient Power weaker special option unaffected by Intimidate or Burn.
  • Choiced sets can use Sleep Talk to allow for some functionality even after being put to sleep.
  • Roseli and Chople Berry reduce damage from Fairy- and Fighting-type moves respectively.
  • Slow bulky Special Attacking set with an EV spread of with a 252 HP / 148 Def / 108 SpA with a Quiet nature with Leftovers, this set should use the same moves as the special attacking set.
  • Taunt could be used to shutdown certain Pokemon.
  • Thunder Wave Speed control.
  • Rock Tomb single target Rock-type move which lowers the opponents Speed one stage. Speed drop lost after switching out.
  • Snarl is a Dark-type spread move which lowers the opponent's Pokemon's Special Attack stat by one stage. Snarl should be used for its support value rather than as a primary attack as it is far weaker than other Dark-type moves, this means it should be opted for on bulky sets which can afford the drop in power.
Checks & Counters
########
  • Water-types can threaten Tyranitar, A well played Politoed will be able to get up its rain against Tyranitar, Kingdra greatly enjoys having the rain up against Tyranitar as it can outspeed and OHKO with it Hydro Pump in rain. Rotom-W can burn physical sets and threaten Tyranitar with Hydro Pump.
  • Fairy-types, Azumarill in particular, can check Tyranitar with Play Roughs and Moon Blasts. Azumarill can set up a Belly Drum against Tyranitar. Gardevoir can 2HKO with Moon Blast (not Dazzling Gleam, unless max Special Attack Choice Specs) but must fear Stone Edge. Mega Mawile similarly is scared of Fire Blast, but can OHKO with Play Rough.
  • Ground-types check Tyranitar with their STAB Earthquake, must be wary of not OHKO and Ice Beam from the bulky or Choice Scarf set.
  • Grass-types, Mega Venusaur can take hits from the special sets, doesn't enjoy +1 Crunch, can't OHKO bulky or Mega Tyranitar. Ferrothorn checks Dragon Dance being able to OHKO it with Gyro Ball, this goes for the Choice Scarf being locked into anything other than Fire Blast.
  • Fighting-types and coverage moves all check Tyranitar. Mega Lucario outspeed can OHKO with either Close Combat or Aura Sphere. Scrafty can take on any set as it resists Tyranitars dual STAB and has good enough bulk to take any coverage move. Intimidate helps against Dragon Dance. Power-Up Punch or Hammer Arm from Mega Kangaskhan can either be used to boost your attack while 2HKO or straight up OHKO Tyranitar respectively. The rare Sacred Sword from Aegislash can OHKO.
  • Status. The Dragon Dance set is hugely crippled by Will-O-Wisp. Dragon Dance and Choice Scarf are hindered greatly by Thunder Wave.

Add the mixed set to the top, unslash Dark Pulse from the special set (it is only needed on the scarf set) and change the DD set to a mega set like this:

Mega Tyranitar
########
name: Mega Tyranitar
move 1: Crunch
move 2: Rock Slide
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Dragon Dance / Protect
ability: Sand Stream / Unnerve
item: Tyranitarite
evs: 252 Atk / 108 Def / 20 SpD / 128 Spe
nature: Adamant

Set Details
========
Weakness Policy

It needs this spread to take some hits. Furthermore, Mega Tyranitar absolutely needs Earthquake to get a safe hit on Aegislash and avoid the attack drop from King's Shield. Weakness Policy is too unreliable to be recommended.

Those were the main changes I was going to make before I gave the thread to you.

Dark Pulse is very useful arguably more useful than Crunch with all the Intimidate and Will-O-Wisp running around. "Mega Tyranitar absolutely needs Earthquake to get a safe hit on Aegislash" Yeah, no. I can't think of a single successful team which used Earthquake Mega Tyranitar. There is little point to run Mega Tyranitar if not for Dragon Dance and honestly Protect is far more useful than Earthquake. Honestly I might move Weakness Policy but I'm going to need more persuasion than this.

Also why don't you wait until I finish anything to start commenting?
I was just going through the changes I was going to make myself before giving it to you. It is still down to you what you keep and what you don't keep.

Not sure about a scarf set, can you provide some calcs to mons like Garchomp, and other things its designed for to prove it should have its own set? The 2nd set looks good I think Edge Quake has near unbeatable coverage in VGC so I might slash that with Crunch (Earthquake). I'm going to talk to some other VGC people about the slashes on the first set as well.

i like this!!!!!!!

in the intro, mention how it shits on zard-y to the point of being a full counter to it if you can get sand stream up after it mega evolves (megatar has an easier time of this) and while fighting weakness isn't /as/ relevant nowadays, mega kang can basically use ttar as setup fodder, as it's by far the most common user of a fighting move. the other weaknesses are manageable given its bulk imo.

the sets look fine, though i think stone edge should be slashed in the scarf/special set just to do more damage to rotom-h and ohko zard more often (i'm talking bulky sets+intimidates here) and let's be real here, rock slide on specialtar is piss weak against anything not named charizard or talonlame. i think a bulky spread with leftovers or something is a good idea for the special set now. something like 252 HP / 108 SpA / rest in defense with a + spa nature (preferably quiet imo). i've been using a bulky specialtar for a while now, and it never ceases to amaze me how much ttar can live nowadays. it's clutched out games for me by taking rock slides and solarbeams simultaneously while taking advantage of common mons's 4x weaknesses. lefties helps bulky tar check zard-y more efficiently since it often sticks around for more than 4 turns and lets it bounce back from a solarbeam/eq to the face. i think such a spread should be given a paragraph in AC, since it's basically a slower, bulkier version of regular specialtar (but better imo!!) similar to the bulky spread you mention in the DD's AC. also, it functions better in tr :D

i think lum should be slashed in the DD set, b/c 1) it helps check smeargle because fuck that seriously, 2) it lets you set up on rotom-h (and sometimes -w), 3), you can swagger your own ttar because cool and 4), it's sort of a safeguard against hax (looking at you, untimely tbolt paras).

in OO, remove the fighting moves since they're really only good for other ttar (against kang your stab moves deal about the same damage) and low kick isn't legal. also remove iron ball+fling (dumb strat), unnerve (dumb ability), smack down, earthquake, and iron head (dumb moves). as a general rule of thumb, if it isn't a ground-type or has mold breaker, it's not a good EQ user. i think rock tomb could be mentioned in a similar vein to twave for speed control without having to sacrifice your rock move, although it DOES only hit one opponent and can be negated by switching out...

  • Offensively threatened by Ground-, Fairy-, Fighting-, Water-, and Grass-type moves all relatively common.
fighting coverage is pretty much nonexistant outside of kang, scrafty, <3 megaluke <3 and the occasional sacred sword aegislash, and most of the time these are easy to see coming. grass is also pretty much relegated to (mega) venu and ferrothorn, the ladder of which isn't very common. so, remove the mention of these moves being common and instead give blurbs of what specific mons can hit upon these weaknesses. actually, you should probably do this for each of these... lol
  • Rotom-W stops both Special sets being able to take hits and the Dragon Dance with Will-O-Wisp, while threatening both with Hydro Pump.
  • Opposing weather, Politoed particularly, Mega Charizard Y threatens Tyranitar with Solar Beam and Venusaur is a common partner.
while rotom-w does ok against ttar, it still can't ohko ttar in sand and burn doesn't help vs. specialtar or lum ddtar. it can PROBABLY win against ttar, but it does so slowly. same with politoed if it's in sand, so put both politoed and rotom-w in their own little section about waters, along with kingdra and ludi. zard-y probably shouldn't be in checks/counters since it doesn't threaten ttar a lot of the time. ttar doesn't really mind opposing weather aside from obvious rain that spams water moves in its face.

also, don't add a bulky physical set since specialtar pretty much outclasses non-ddtar in today's meta. it sucking so bad made people switch to specialtar in the first place lol.

I'll make these changes in the morning, I'll have to test bulky special ttar but it sounds pretty good.

252 SpA Tyranitar Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 192-228 (104.9 - 124.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Looks okay but I have some edits.

Whats the point of having Ice Beam OHKO Garchomp? Garchomp is faster and has Earthquake. Use the set found in here, this current Tyranitar is way to slow. It's more than often going to be dead weight.

http://nuggetbridge.com/reports/vacation-gourgeist-island-first-place-florida-regionals/

Tyranitar @ Life Orb
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Modest Nature
- Rock Slide
- Fire Blast
- Ice Beam
- Protect

Theres also a more specific mega tyranitar spread I saw on Eggy's emporium, I'll link that thread here in a second, it might help you with your write up (just fix the EVs) the article explains them

here: http://eggyemporium.blogspot.com/2014/01/offensive-combinations-mega-tyranitar.html

Tyranitar @ Tyranitarite
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 132 Def / 180 Spd / 180 HP / 4 SDef / 12 Atk
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Protect
- Crunch
- Rock Slide

Get rid of Leftovers on the first set for Life Orb. Special Attacker is made to surprise opponents and kill things not really have longevity. It's not going to survive two super effective physical hits anyways if you really want to use Leftovers that bad use Assault Vest imo.

Assault Vest really helps with the rain matchup, and just completely tanking stuff like Flash Cannon from Aegislash and can live like Specs Draco Meteor from Hydreigon. Dingram used it in US Nats and it did well. It functions different than the other Tyranitars, and it's certainly viable. I'd emphasize it strongly in OO.

Choice Scarf Timid the EV spread I have listed outspeeds Garchomp.

I have made some of the changes to the Special Attacker, reverting it to the faster variant, I would like another opinion on the slashes of that set though. I have given the slower set a mention in other options, I will mention that it is largely outclassed by AV. The only reason I have not made changes with Dragon Dance set is that both Weakness Policy and Lum Berry are incredibly useful and that spread isn't optimized for non-mega, I already have that exact bulkier spread listed in set details.

Chenkovsky from the looks of things enough flaws have been ironed out for a stamp. just one thing though. since Laurel said he wanted a stronger AV mention, please move assault vest towards the top of the OO list, so it's the first thing people read about in potential options. In general the OO lists should be organized in order of viability but for longer lists like this just putting the best OO ideas at the top is sufficient too

Overview
########

Tyranitar has a lot going for it,; (semicolon to comma) with good Attack, Special Attack, and mixed bulk. On top of that, its Tyranitar's ability, Sand Stream, automatically starts sand, which boosts Tyranitar's Special Defense. Sand is seen as a neutral weather, as it neither boosts nor weakens any types offensively; (comma to semicolon) there is also a this is coupled with the lack of Pokemon able to take advantage of sand in VGC the format. Because of this, (comma) Tyranitar is often used to take on opposing teams' weather setters, Mega Charizard Y in particularly. Tyranitar has a very expansive movepool, which along with its stats, allows it to play multiple roles, most commonly seen as a special attacker or a Dragon Dance sweeper. While Tyranitar's Speed may seem lacking, (remove comma) compared to its other stats, it is enough for Tyranitar to effectively use a Choice Scarf. Tyranitar is also blessed with an incredibly powerful Mega Evolution. (comma to period) With a base 164 Attack stat, Mega Tyranitar it hits incredibly hard, and with massive 100 / 150 / 120 bulk it can be incredibly hard to take down.

It is important that most non-Dragon Dance Tyranitars should be special attackers due to the large amount of Intimidate and Will-O-Wisp in the metagame. Tyranitar's Rock / Dark Rock- and Dark-typing leaves it with seven weaknesses, four of which are common. While Tyranitar's movepool gives it a lot of options, to of effectively use them Tyranitar must compromise STAB for coverage, (remove comma) or vice versa, this leaves Tyranitar leaving it unable to win certain match-ups it otherwise would. Without a Choice Scarf Tyranitar is relatively slow, (comma) leaving it vulnerable to opposing attackers. (comma to period) Most importantly, (comma) Tyranitar is complete setup fodder for Power-Up Punch Mega Kangaskhan.

Special Attacker
########
name: Special Attacker
move 1: Rock Slide / Stone Edge
move 2: Fire Blast / Ice Beam
move 3: Dark Pulse / Ice Beam
move 4: Protect
ability: Sand Stream
item: Life Orb
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Modest

Moves
========

Tyranitar usually opts for Rock Slide over Stone Edge as it can OHKO Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame even with an Attack-lowering negative nature. If Tyranitar moves before both other Pokemon, (comma) Rock Slide also has a 46% 54% (it doesn't have a 54% chance - ((.3*.7)*2 + .3*.3)*.9 = .459) chance to get at least one flinch. However, due to the fact that Rock Slide is a spread moves its damage is reduced, (comma) and Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame can be EVed to survive the hit, so Stone Edge can be used to ensure that they are both OHKOed. Stone Edge has other advantages over Rock Slide; (comma to semicolon) for instance, (comma) it can bypass Wide Guard, (remove comma) as well as being able to 2HKO defensive Rotom-H through its Sitrus Berry. Fire Blast is used to hit Steel-types, (remove comma) like Ferrothorn and Mega Mawile, (comma) both of which would be able to beat Tyranitar otherwise. For Tyranitar's secondary STAB move, (comma) Dark Pulse is used, (comma) as it threatens Ghost- and Psychic-types and generally has good neutral coverage. (%) Ice Beam allows Tyranitar to better check Dragon-types and can be used over either Fire Blast or Dark Pulse. Ice Beam allows Tyranitar to better check Dragon-types. Similarly to Fire Blast, Ice Beam hits Grass-types for super effective damage, but Tyranitar loses the ability to deal important damage to Steel-types if Ice Beam is used over Fire Blast, and Tyranitar will lose Dark Pulse's reliable form of damage in Dark Pulse if Ice Beam is used instead of it. Alternatively, (comma) Tyranitar could use the moves Dark Pulse / Ice Beam / Fire Blast / Protect, this which would allow Tyranitar to have its desired special coverage, (remove comma) but loses its ability to counter Talonflame and Mega Charizard Y. Protect is an important move for Tyranitar, (comma) as though Tyranitar deals a large amount of damage it and is relatively slow, this means that so it requires some its teammates support to take down the Pokemon that threaten it; (comma to semicolon) Protect buys a free turn to allow for this to happen. (move sentences to %)

Set Details
========

Tyranitar uses a spread of 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe, While Tyranitar could use a more complex spread, (comma) it primarily needs to hit as hard and as fast possible; (comma to semicolon) this is achieved with this spread. A Modest nature is used to allow Tyranitar to hit harder; (comma to semicolon) however, a Timid nature could be used to allow you Tyranitar to outspeed a few other Pokemon, like zero Speed uninvested base 100s. A Life Orb is used to boost the power of Tyranitar's attacks, (remove comma) so that it can hit harder than it otherwise would. Tyranitar's ability, Sand Stream, automatically induces sand, which allows Tyranitar to check opposing weather teams. Because of Tyranitar's low base Speed stat it can perform well in Trick Room; (comma to semicolon) if you want to run Tyranitar on a Trick Room team, simply opt for max HP instead of Speed investment and a Quiet nature instead of max Speed.

Usage Tips
========

A lot of Tyranitar's utility is in its ability to shut down opposing weather teams; if the opponent has a weather inducer, (comma)s it may be worth keeping Tyranitar in the back to be able to come ininduce the sand on the turn that when the opponent's weather is set up. Because of Tyranitar's sheer power and coverage, (comma) it can be used to KO Pokemon to allow for its teammates opposing Pokemon to have an easier time, this makeso Tyranitar makes for a decent lead option. If you are running Tyranitar on a Trick Room team, you should go for Protect on the turn that Trick Room is set up, ensuring that this insures Tyranitar will be able to make use of Trick Room.

Team Options
========

Talonflame makes a decent partner for Tyranitar, (comma) being able to OHKO most Grass- and Fighting-types, this allows and thus allowing Tyranitar to be more consistently useful, as many of its common checks will no longer threaten it. Talonflame can also be used to deal damage to ensure that Tyranitar can pick up KOs it would otherwise miss out on; (comma to semicolon) for Talonflame to be able to perform this role consistently, (comma) it should use a run Choice Band so that it can have the highest damage output possible. However, Talonflame can also set up Tailwind, (comma) which bolsters Tyranitar's otherwise mediocre Speed stat to the point where it can outspeed most other Pokemon. Rotom-W supports Tyranitar by being able to check Ground- and Water-types, (comma) which give Tyranitar problems, and It can check these Pokemon with it dual STAB, Hydro Pump and Thunderbolt, as well as being able to spread burns through Will-O-Wisp. While thanks to its ability Tyranitar can check opposing weather teams, (comma) it won't win these match-ups by itself; (comma to semicolon) Rotom-H and Ludicolo can respectively check sun and rain, while individually supporting Tyranitar. Rotom-H spreads burns with Will-O-Wisp, (remove comma) and with Overheat can allows Tyranitar to run Ice Beam without hurting the team's overall coverage by running Overheat. Ludicolo, on the other hand, provides Fake Out support and is able to threaten Water- and Ground-types with its STAB moves. Aegislash beats Mega Kangaskhan as well as Fighting-types, (comma) which both of which seriously threaten Tyranitar. Aegislash also provides Wide Guard support, (comma) which blocks super effective Earthquakes. Trick Room setters like Gardevoir and Gourgeist-XL Super can be used to support Tyranitar. Gardevoir beats Fighting-types both offensively and defensively, and is capable of spreading burns. While Gourgeist-XL Super cannot beat Fighting-types offensively, (comma) it can spread burns and is immune to Fighting-type moves. As a whole, (comma) Gourgeist's and Tyranitar's typings complements each other's overs, with one resisting the others weaknesses almost perfectly, with only Gourgeist's Ice-type weakness not being is the only one not resisted, however, and Ice-types lose to Tyranitar Rock-type STAB moves.

Dragon Dance
########
name: Dragon Dance
move 1: Crunch
move 2: Rock Slide
move 3: Dragon Dance
move 4: Protect
ability: Sand Stream
item: Tyranitarite / Weakness Policy / Lum Berry
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly / Adamant

Moves
========

Tyranitar has good coverage with its dual STAB combination, with very little resisting both Crunch and Rock Slide. Dragon Dance is the main the reason to run a physical Tyranitar, boosting. Dragon Dance boosts both Tyranitar's Attack and Speed, this solves and solving two of Tyranitar's problems: (comma to colon) first its relatively low Speed, (remove comma) and second the Attack drop from boost removes the effects of Intimidate. Protect is crucial to this set, as with the Dragon Dance boosts Tyranitar is likely to be double targeted to prevent it from sweeping; (comma to semicolon) Protect blocks these attacks and allows Tyranitar's partner to remove the threat.

Set Details
========

Mega Tyranitar can use a bulkier a spread of 180 HP / 12 Atk / 132 Def / 4 SpD / 180 Spe with a Jolly nature, this spread which is never 2HKOed by Garchomp's Earthquake after Mega Evolving, nor will it be or OHKOed by bulky Mega Mawile's Play Rough. After going for Dragon Dance once , (comma) Tyranitar will be able to outspeed opposing Choice Scarf Tyranitars, and as well as 2HKO Garchomp with Crunch. Tyranitar has the rare combination of enough weaknesses with good enough bulk to make use of the Weakness Policy, which boosts Tyranitar's Attack two stages when hit by a super effective move. While a Lum Berry gives Tyranitar no offensive advantages like the other two items do, it does however lets Tyranitar to set up on Pokemon like Rotom-H and Gengar which would otherwise be able to burn Tyranitar with Will-O-Wisp. (comma to period) On top of that, (comma) Lum Berry improves it helps Tyranitar's match-up with Smeargle, (comma) which can otherwise outspeed Tyranitar and put it Tyranitar to sleep with Dark Void. A Lum Berry can also be used to remove the confusion from Swagger, as a partner Pokemon like Meowstic can use Swagger on Tyranitar, (comma) giving it the Attack boosts but not the confusion. A Jolly nature is almost required on non-Mega Tyranitar to allow +1 Tyranitar to outspeed Garchomp at plus one Speed, as with an Adamant nature and max Speed, (comma) at plus one Speed +1 Tyranitar will Speed tie with Garchomp.

Usage Tips
========

Tyranitar can be played as a lead with either Amoonguss or Meowstic, (comma) as they can both aid Tyranitar with setting up. By leading with both Tyranitar and Amoonguss or Meowstic there is no risk of switching them in later in the battle. Tyranitar can also be kept in the back until the Pokemon which threaten it have been KOed, allowing it to get a sweep late-game sweep.

Team Options
========

Amoonguss has access to Rage Powder, which redirects moves away from Tyranitar. This allows Tyranitar to be able to set up without worrying about Will-O-Wisp from the common Rotom formes or super effective moves from Pokemon like Gardevoir. Meowstic and Klefki can both set up Reflect, Light Screen, and Safeguard, these moves allowing Tyranitar to set up Dragon Dances without worrying about status moves or taking a large amount of damage or status moves. Talonflame can OHKO most Fighting-types, Scrafty being the rare exception, (period to comma) Talonflame can also spread Will-O-Wisp to shut down physical attackers, and use Taunt to prevent status moves from affecting Tyranitar. Aegislash is immune to Fighting-type moves, (remove comma) and can block spread moves like Earthquake and Dazzling Gleam with Wide Guard, aiding Tyranitar in setting up with Wide Guard blocking spread moves like Earthquake and Dazzling Gleam.

Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Rock Slide / Stone Edge
move 2: Dark Pulse
move 3: Fire Blast
move 4: Ice Beam
ability: Sand Stream
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Timid

Moves
========

Rock Slide OHKOes Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame, even with a Timid nature. Stone Edge is a more powerful option which will OHKO Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame even when Tyranitar is burned, on top of that it bypasses as well as bypassing Wide Guard, (comma) ensuring that Tyranitar will get the necessary OHKOs. Both of these Rock-type moves threaten Fire-types moves in general. Dark Pulse is Tyranitar's secondary STAB move, hitting Ghost-types for super effective damage. Fire Blast hits Steel-types, which would otherwise be able to completely wall this set, for super effective damage, Steel-types would otherwise be able to completely wall this set. Ice Beam OHKOes Dragon-types (remove comma) such as Garchomp and Salamence.

Set Details
========

Tyranitar should runs max Special Attack and Speed investment to ensure that it, this will insure Tyranitar hits as hard and as fast as possible. With the Choice Scarf and a Timid nature Tyranitar will outspeed max Speedimum investment base 115s. 228 Speed EVs or a Modest nature will ensure that Tyranitar is slower than Modest natured Choice Scarf Politoed, this will insure so that Tyranitar gets sand up against Polioted, giving Tyranitar the advantage in this match-up. With 228 Speed EVs and a Timid nature Tyranitar loses out on outspeeding Pokemon with 115 base Speed, however, Tyranitar but will still outspeed Mega Lucario. With a Modest nature Tyranitar will outspeed Pokemon with 100 base Speed, however, Tyranitar but will Speed tie with Garchomp.

Usage Tips
========

Choice Scarf Tyranitar plays well as a lead to pick up a surprise KO at the start of a game. Because of this Choice Scarf, Tyranitar will often end up acting as a hit-and-run Pokemon, as due to its Choice Scarf Tyranitar will be locked into one move. Similarly with a Choice Scarf Tyranitar plays similarly well late-game as it can easily pick off weakened Pokemon with its strong coverage moves.

Team Options
========

Choice Scarf Tyranitar requires more offensive support than other sets Tyranitars due to the its lack of Protect. (semicolon to period) Talonflame can easily pick off Fighting-types with Brave Bird and Steel-types with Flare Blitz; (comma to semicolon) while Tyranitar can perform the latter role with Fire Blast, it means that with Talonflame support Tyranitar can pick an alternative move to be locked into. Rotom-W can spread burns with Will-O-Wisp and generally threatens Water-types with Thunderbolt. Rotom-H and Ludicolo both help Tyranitar beat opposing weather setters, sun and rain respectively. Aegislash and other Ghost-types are immune to Fighting-type moves and generally enjoys Tyranitar's coverage.

Other Options
########

Tyranitar has a significant number of other options. The item Assault Vest can boost Tyranitar's Special Defense to the point where in the sand Tyranitar is capable of taking Mega Lucario's Aura Sphere. The additional Special Defense lets Tyranitar better check weather, especially rain especially. Assault Vest Tyranitar requires slightly more team support, however, as it is unable to run Protect. Flamethrower is a weaker but more accurate version of Fire Blast; (comma to semicolon) it should only be used for this consistency, (comma) as the loss in power is noticeable. Tyranitar can make use of Choice Specs, (comma) which allows it to hits significantly harder than Life Orb, but it will however you lose the ability to switch moves. Due to the higher damage output, (comma) Choice Specs Tyranitar can make better use of more consistent moves like Flamethrower. Ancient Power is a far very weaker special Rock-type move which should primarily be used on the Choice Specs sets, as it is unaffected by Intimidate and burns, so Tyranitar will thereby be able to consistently OHKO Talonflame and Mega Charizard Y. Both Choice Scarf and Choice Specs sets can make use of Sleep Talk to allow Tyranitar to act as a sleep absorber and continue being useful insure its usefulness even if it is put to sleep. Tyranitar can make use of the weakness certain Berries, most notably Roseli, Chople, and Shuca Berries, which weaken Fairy-, Fighting- (dash), and Ground-type moves respectively. While these berries mean that Tyranitar can't make use of other potentially more useful items, however, they do ensure that Tyranitar will be able to get off one attack. A slow bulky special attacking set with an EV spread of with a 252 HP / 148 Def / 108 SpA with a Quiet nature and Leftovers is possible, this set should use using the same moves as the special attacking set. This set is somewhat inferior to the Assault Vest set in its ability to take hits, however, though if used correctly it can have better longevity. Tyranitar has access to Taunt, this which can be used to shut down Pokemon like Aegislash, (remove comma) which are reliant on on non-damaging moves. Taunt can be hard to fit into sets, however, as Tyranitar is fairly reliant on its coverage moves. Tyranitar has access to Thunder Wave and Rock Tomb, (comma) two forms of speed control. Thunder Wave reduces quarters the opponents foe's Speed to one quarter of its original and has a chance to prevent action the opponent for going for a move. Rock Tomb is a single-target damaging Rock-type move, it that lowers the foe's opponents Speed stat by one stage, but this drop is lost after switching out. Snarl is a Dark-type spread move which lowers the opponent's Pokemon's Special Attack stats by one stage. Snarl should be used for its support value rather than as a primary attack, (comma) as it is far weaker than other Dark-type moves, this means so it should only be opted for on bulky sets, like the Assault Vest set, which can afford the drop in power.

Checks & Counters

**Water-types**: Politoed induces the rain. (semicolon to period) Though Tyranitar is normally slower than Politoed, however, Rain Dance is a common move on Politoed which will insure which ensures that the rain is set up against Tyranitar. Kingdra, a Pokemon common on rain teams, is capable of OHKOing Tyranitar in the rain. Rotom-W is able to burn physically attacking Tyranitar's, crippling physically offensive variants, and Hydro Pump does decent damage to non-Mega Tyranitar.

**Fairy-types**: Fairy-types, Azumarill in particularly, can check Tyranitar. Azumarill is capable of taking any hit from Tyranitar and either retaliatinge with a Play Rough or set-up a setting up Belly Drum against it. Gardevoir is capable of 2HKOing Tyranitar in the sand with Moonblast and can also potentially burning physical sets. Mega Mawile only fears the Fire Blast, which won't OHKO it unless Tyranitar is a Choice Specs variant Tyranitar, and can Mawile can OHKO back with Play Rough.

**Ground-types**: Ground-types, such as Mamoswine and Garchomp, threaten Tyranitar with their powerful STAB Earthquakes. Garchomp, however, in particular, must be wary of Tyranitar's carrying running enough bulk to survive an Earthquake, (comma) as Ice Beam will OHKO it.

**Grass-types**: Mega Venusaur is capable of taking any hit from the special Tyranitar, and between Leech Seed, Synthesis, and Giga Drain Mega Venusaur is capable of healing off any damage. Similarly, (comma) Assault Vest Ludicolo deals with the special sets being able to Giga Drain off damage recover health with Giga Drain or hit Tyranitar hard with Hydro Pump. Both of these Pokemon don't fare so well against Dragon Dance Tyranitar, however. Ferrothorn beats Dragon Dance Tyranitar, (comma) as it can OHKO non-Mega Variants with Power Whip, (remove comma) and OHKO +1 Mega Tyranitar after one Dragon Dance with Gyro Ball. Ferrothorn also deals with Choice Scarf Tyranitar not locked into Fire Blast.

**Fighting-types (remove comma) and Fighting-type Coverage Moves**: Tyranitar, being 4x four times weak to Fighting-type moves, (comma) can be easily OHKOed by them in most cases. Mega Lucario resists Tyranitar's dual STAB combination (remove comma) and can OHKO Tyranitar with either Close Combat or Aura Sphere. Similarly, (comma) Scrafty resists Tyranitar's STAB moves, (remove comma) and is capable of OHKOing Tyranitar with Drain Punch, simultaneously healing off any damage done to it in the process. Fighting-type coverage moves, such as Power-Up Punch or Hammer Arm from Mega Kangaskhan, will quickly dispatch of Tyranitar. While uncommon, Tyranitar must also fear the rare Sacred Sword from Aegislash.

**Status Conditions**: While not the most direct way of dealing with Tyranitar, status conditions will cripple certain sets. For instance, (comma) the Dragon Dance set will have a far harder time sweeping once burned. Equally The Choice Scarf set, (remove comma) and to a lesser extent the Dragon Dance set to a lesser extent, are rendered near useless if paralyzed, (comma) as they are hugely focused towards Speed.

Word of warning to the next GP checker, in moving the check from word back to smogon some of the spacing got messed I have corrected most of it but some might of got through.

Overview
########

Tyranitar has a lot going for it,; (comma to semicolon) with good Attack, Special Attack, and mixed bulk. On top of that, its ability, (RC) Sand Stream, (RC) induces sand upon switching in automatically starts sand, which boosts Tyranitar's Special Defense. Sand is seen as a neutral weather, as it neither boosts nor weakens any types offensively; there is also alack a lack of Pokemon able to take advantage of sand in VGC. Because of this,(add space) Tyranitar is often used to take on opposing teams' weather setters, mainly Mega Charizard Y in particular. Tyranitar has an very expansive extensive movepool, which, (AC) along with its stats, allows it to play multiple roles, including that of a special attacker or a and Dragon Dance sweeper. (you say that Tyranitar has such a wide movepool with multiple sets...and you list two roles it can play. While two is multiple, you imply that Tyranitar is so much more than it really is.) While Tyranitar's Speed may seem lacking when compared to its other stats, it is enough for Tyranitar to effectively use a Choice Scarf. Tyranitar is also blessed with an incredibly powerful Mega Evolution. (add space)With a base 164 Attack stat, Mega Tyranitar hits incredibly hard, and with massive 100 / 150 / 120 bulk, (AC) it can be incredibly hard to take down.

It is important that most non-Dragon Dance-lacking Tyranitars should be special attackers due to the large amount of many Intimidate and Will-O-Wisp users in the metagame. Tyranitar's Rock / Dark typing leaves it with seven weaknesses, four of which are common. While Tyranitar's movepool gives it a lot of options, to effectively use them, (AC) Tyranitar must compromise STAB moves for coverage moves or vice versa, leaving it unable to win certain match-ups it otherwise wcould. Without a Choice Scarf, (AC) Tyranitar is relatively slow, leaving it vulnerable to opposing attackers. Most importantly, (add space) Tyranitar is complete setup fodder for Power-Up Punch Mega Kangaskhan.

Special Attacker
########
name: Special Attacker
move 1: Rock Slide / Stone Edge
move 2: Fire Blast / Ice Beam
move 3: Dark Pulse / Ice Beam
move 4: Protect
ability: Sand Stream
item: Life Orb
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Modest

Moves
========

Tyranitar usually opts for Rock Slide over Stone Edge, (AC) as it can usually OHKO Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame even with an Attack-lowering nature and is a spread move. If Tyranitar moves before both other Pokemon foes, Rock Slide also has a 46% chance to get at least one flinch. However, due to the fact that because Rock Slide is a spread move, (AC) its damage output is reduced, and Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame can be EVed to survive the hit, so Stone Edge can be used to ensure that they are both OHKOed. Stone Edge has other advantages over Rock Slide; for instance, it can bypass Wide Guard as well as and 2HKO defensive Sitrus Berry Rotom-H through its Sitrus Berry. Fire Blast is used to hit Steel-types, such as like Ferrothorn and Mega Mawile, both of which would be able to beat Tyranitar otherwise. For Tyranitar's secondary STAB move, Dark Pulse is used, as it threatens Ghost- and Psychic-types and generally has good neutral coverage. Protect is an important move for Tyranitar, as though Tyranitar has a high damage output deals a large amount of damage, (AC) it is relatively slow,so it and therefore requires its team mates teammates to take down the Pokemon that threaten foes that threaten it; Protect buys a free turn to allow for this to happen. Ice Beam allows Tyranitar to better check Dragon-types and can be used over either Fire Blast or Dark Pulse. Similarly to Like Fire Blast, Ice Beam hits Grass-types for super effective damage, but Tyranitar loses the ability to deal important damage to Steel-types if Ice Beam is used over Fire Blast, and Tyranitar will lose Dark Pulse's reliable damage if Ice Beam is used instead of it Dark Pulse. Alternatively, Tyranitar could use the moves Dark Pulse / Ice Beam / Fire Blast / Protect, which would allow Tyranitar to have its desired special coverage, (AC) but it would lose its ability to counter Talonflame and Mega Charizard Y.

Set Details

(add space)
While Tyranitar could use a more complex spread, it primarily needs to hit as hard and as fast possible; this is achieved with this the given spread achieves this. A Modest nature is used to allows Tyranitar to hit harder; however, a Timid nature could be used to allows Tyranitar to outspeed a few other Pokemon, like such as uninvested base 100s. A Life Orb is used to boosts the power of Tyranitar's attacks so that it can hit harder than it otherwise would. Tyranitar's ability, (RC) Sand Stream, automatically induces sand, which allows Tyranitar to check opposing weather teams. (**)Because of Tyranitar's low base Speed stat, (AC) it can perform well in Trick Room; if you want to run Tyranitar on a Trick Room team, simply opt for max HP instead of Speed investment and a Quiet nature.(**) (Move (**)(**) text to Other Options.)

Usage Tips
========

A lot of Tyranitar's utility is in its ability to shut down opposing weather teams; if the opponent has a weather inducer, it mayight be worth keeping bringing Tyranitar in the back to be able to come in when the opponent's weather is set up. Because of Tyranitar's sheer power and coverage, (add space)it can be used to KO Pokemon to allow its teammates to have an easier time, making Tyranitar makes for a decent lead option. (**)If you are running Tyranitar on a Trick Room team, you should go for Protect on the turn that Trick Room is set up, ensuring that Tyranitar will be able to make use of Trick Room.(**) reword and put into Other Options; don't make it too wordy along with the other sentences about Trick Room

Team Options
========

Talonflame makes is a decent partner for Tyranitar, (add space) being able to OHKO most Grass- and Fighting-types, many of Tyranitat's common checks and thus allowing Tyranitar to be more consistently useful, as many of its common checks will no longer threaten it. Talonflame can also be used to deal damage to ensure that Tyranitar can pick up KOs it would otherwise miss out on; for Talonflame to be able to perform this role consistently, it should run Choice Band so that it can have the highest damage output possible. However, Talonflame can also set up Tailwind, which bolsters Tyranitar's otherwise mediocre Speed stat to the point where it can outspeed most other Pokemon. Rotom-W supports Tyranitar by being able to check Ground- and Water-types, which give Tyranitar problems, and spread burns through with Will-O-Wisp. While thanks to its ability Tyranitar can check opposing weather teams, (add space) it won't win these match-ups by itself; Rotom-H and Ludicolo can respectively check sun and rain, respectively, (AC) while individually supporting Tyranitar. Aegislash beats Mega Kangaskhan as well as Fighting-types,(add space) which both seriously threaten Tyranitar. Aegislash also provides Wide Guard support, (add space) which blocks super effective Earthquakes. Trick Room setters like, (AC) such as Gardevoir and Gourgeist-XL, (AC) can be used to support Tyranitar. Gardevoir beats Fighting-types both offensively and defensively, and is capable of can spreading burns. While Gourgeist-XL cannot beat Fighting-types offensively, it can spread burns and is immune to Fighting-type moves. As a whole,Gourgeist's and Tyranitar's typings complement each other's with only Gourgeist's Ice-type weakness not being resisted, and Ice-types lose to Tyranitar Rock-type STAB moves. Thanks to their synergy, Gourgeist-XL and Tyranitar are great paire

Dragon Dance
########
name: Dragon Dance
move 1: Crunch
move 2: Rock Slide
move 3: Dragon Dance
move 4: Protect
ability: Sand Stream
item: Tyranitarite / Weakness Policy / Lum Berry
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly / Adamant

Moves
========

Tyranitar has a good coverage with its dual STAB combination, with very little resisting both Crunch and Rock Slide. Dragon Dance is the main reason to run a physical Tyranitar, boosting both Tyranitar's Attack and Speed and solving two of Tyranitar's problems: its relatively low Speed and the Intimidate's Attack drop from Intimidate. Protect is crucial to this set, as with Dragon Dance boosts, (AC) Tyranitar is likely to be double targeted to prevent it from sweeping; Protect blocks these attacks and allows Tyranitar's partner ally to remove the threat.

Set Details
========

Mega Tyranitar can use a bulkier spread of 180 HP / 12 Atk / 132 Def / 4 SpD / 180 Spe with a Jolly nature, (add space)which is never 2HKOed by Garchomp's Earthquake after Mega Evolving or OHKOed by bulky Mega Mawile's Play Rough. After going for Dragon Dance once, Tyranitar will be able to outspeed opposing Choice Scarf Tyranitar as well as 2HKO Garchomp with Crunch. Tyranitar has the rare combination of enough weaknesses with good enough bulk to make use of the Weakness Policy, which boosts Tyranitar's Attack two stages when hit by a super effective move. While Lum Berry gives Tyranitar no offensive advantages like the other two items do, it lets Tyranitar set up on Pokemon like such as Rotom-H and Gengar, (AC) which would otherwise be able to burn Tyranitar with Will-O-Wisp. On top of that, Lum Berry improves Tyranitar's match-up with Smeargle, which can otherwise outspeed Tyranitar and put it to sleep with Dark Void. Lum Berry can also be used to remove the confusion from Swagger,; Tyranitar can take advantage of this by having an ally, such as Meowstic, use Swagger on it as a partner Pokemon like Meowstic can use Swagger on Tyranitar, giving it the Attack boosts but not the confusion. A Jolly nature is almost required on non-Mega Tyranitar to allow +1 Tyranitar to outspeed Garchomp, as with an Adamant nature, +1 Tyranitar will Speedtie Speed tie with Garchomp.

Usage Tips
========

Tyranitar can be played as a lead along with either Amoonguss or Meowstic, (add space) as they can both aid Tyranitar with setting up. By leading with both Tyranitar and Amoonguss or Meowstic, (AC) there is no a decreased risk of switching them in later in the battle. Tyranitar can also be kept in the back until the Pokemon which threaten it have been KOed, allowing it to sweep late-game.

Team Options
========

Amoonguss has access to Rage Powder, which redirects moves away from Tyranitar. This allows Tyranitar to set up without worrying about Will-O-Wisp from the common Rotom formes or super effective moves from Pokemon like such as Gardevoir. Meowstic and Klefki can both set up Reflect, Light Screen, and Safeguard with Pranskter, allowing Tyranitar to set without worrying about status moves or taking a large amount of damage. Talonflame can OHKO most Fighting-types, Scrafty being the rare exception, spread Will-O-Wisp to shutdown shut down physical attackers, and use Taunt to prevent status moves from affecting Tyranitar. Aegislash is immune to Fighting-type moves and can block spread moves, such as like Earthquake and Dazzling Gleam, (AC) with Wide Guard, aiding Tyranitar in setting up.

Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Rock Slide / Stone Edge
move 2: Dark Pulse
move 3: Fire Blast
move 4: Ice Beam
ability: Sand Stream
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Timid

Moves
========

Rock Slide OHKOes Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame, even with a Timid nature. Stone Edge is a more powerful option which will OHKOes Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame even when Tyranitar is burned; it also bypasses as well as by passing Wide Guard, ensuring that Tyranitar will get the necessary OHKOs. Both of these Rock-type moves threaten Fire-types in general. Dark Pulse is Tyranitar's secondary STAB move, hitting Ghost-types for super effective damage. Fire Blast hits Steel-types, which would otherwise be able to completely wall this set, for super effective damage. Ice Beam OHKOes Dragon-types such as Garchomp and Salamence.

Set Details
========

Tyranitar should run max Special Attack and Speed investment to ensure that it hits as hard and fast as possible. With Choice Scarf and a Timid nature, (AC) Tyranitar will outspeed max Speed base 115s. 228 Speed EVs or a Modest nature ensures that Tyranitar is slower than Modest Choice Scarf Politoed so that Tyranitar gets up sand up against Polioted, giving Tyranitar the advantage. With 228 Speed EVs and a Timid nature, (AC) Tyranitar loses out on cannot outspeeding Pokemon with 115 base 115s Speed but will still outspeeds Mega Lucario. With a Modest nature, (AC) Tyranitar will outspeeds Pokemon with 100 base 100s Speed but will Speedtie Speed ties with Garchomp.

Usage Tips
========

Choice Scarf Tyranitar plays well as a lead to pick up a surprise KO at the start of a game. Because of Choice Scarf, means Tyranitar will often ends up acting as a hit-and-run Pokemon. Choice Scarf Tyranitar plays similarly well late-game, (AC) as it can easily pick off weakened Pokemon with its strong coverage moves.

Team Options
========

Choice Scarf Tyranitar requires more offensive support than other sets due to its lack of Protect. Talonflame can easily pick off Fighting-types with Brave Bird and Steel-types with Brave Bird and Flare Blitz, respectively; while Tyranitar can perform the latter role with Fire Blast, (AC) it can with Talonflame support Tyranitar can pick an alternative move to be locked into with Talonflame support. Rotom-W can spread burns with Will-O-Wisp and generally threatens Water-types with Thunderbolt. Rotom-H and Ludicolo help Tyranitar beat opposing weather setters, sun and rain setters, (AC) respectively. Aegislash and other Ghost-types are immune to Fighting-type moves and generally enjoy Tyranitar's coverage.

Other Options
########

Tyranitar has a significant number of other options. Assault Vest can boost Tyranitar's Special Defense to the point where in the sand Tyranitar is capable of taking Mega Lucario's Aura Sphere in sand. The additional Special Defense lets Tyranitar better check weather, especially rain. Assault Vest Tyranitar requires slightly more team support, however, as it is unable to run Protect. Flamethrower is a weaker but more accurate version of Fire Blast; it should only be used for this consistency, as the loss in power is noticeable. Tyranitar can make use of Choice Specs, which allows it to hit significantly harder than it could with Life Orb, (add space)but it will loses the ability to switch moves. Due to the its higher damage output, (add space)Choice Specs Tyranitar can make better use of more consistent moves like such as Flamethrower. While these berries mean that Tyranitar can't make use of other potentially more useful items, they do ensure that Tyranitar will be able to get off one attack. A slow, (AC) bulky special attacking set with an EV spread of 252 HP / 148 Def / 108 SpA with and a Quiet nature and Leftovers is possible, using the same moves as the special attacking set. This set is somewhat inferior to the Assault Vest set in its ability to take hits, however, though if used correctly, (AC) it can have better longevity. Tyranitar has access to Taunt, which can be used to shut down Pokemon like Aegislash which that are reliant on on non-damaging moves, such as Aegislash. Taunt can be hard to fit into sets, however, (add space) as Tyranitar is fairly reliant on its coverage moves. Tyranitar has access to Thunder Wave and Rock Tomb, two forms of speed control. Thunder Wave quarters halves the foe's Speed and has a chance to paralyze and prevent the foe from moving prevent action. Rock Tomb is a single-target damaging Rock-type move that lowers the foe's Speed stat by one stage,(add space) but this drop is lost after switching out. Snarl is a Dark-type spread move which lowers the opponent's Pokemon's foes' Special Attack stats by one stage.

Though Tyranitar is normally slower than Politoed, (add space) Rain Dance is a common move on Politoed which ensures that the rain is set up against Tyranitar. Kingdra, a Pokemon common on rain teams, is capable of OHKOing Tyranitar in the rain. Rotom-W is able to burn Tyranitar, (add space)crippling physically offensive variants, and Hydro Pump does decent damage to non-Mega Tyranitar.

**Fairy-types**: Fairy-types, Azumarill in particular, can check Tyranitar. Azumarill is capable of taking can take any hit from Tyranitar and can either retaliatinge with a Play Rough or setting up with Belly Drum. Gardevoir is capable of 2HKOing Tyranitar in the sand with Moon blast Moonblast and can also potentially burn physical sets. Mega Mawile only fears only Fire Blast from Tyranitar, which won't OHKO it unless Tyranitar is a Choice Specs variant, and Mawile can OHKO back with Play Rough.

**Ground-types**: Ground-types, such as Mamoswine and Garchomp, threaten Tyranitar with their powerful STAB Earthquakes. Garchomp, however, must be wary of Tyranitar's running enough bulk to survive an Earthquake, as Ice Beam will OHKO it.

**Grass-types**: Mega Venusaur is capable of taking can take any hit from special Tyranitar, and between Leech Seed, Synthesis, and Giga Drain, (AC) Mega Venusaur is capable of healing off any damage. Similarly, Assault Vest Ludicolo deals with the special sets, (AC) being able to recover health with Giga Drain or hit Tyranitar hard with Hydro Pump. Both of these Pokemon don't fare so well against Dragon Dance Tyranitar, however. Ferrothorn beats Dragon Dance Tyranitar, (add space)as it can OHKO non-Mega variants with Power Whip and OHKO +1 Mega Tyranitar with Gyro Ball. Ferrothorn also deals with Choice Scarf Tyranitar not locked into Fire Blast.

**Fighting-types and Fighting-type Coverage Moves**: Tyranitar, being 4x weak to Fighting-type moves, (RC) can be easily OHKOed Tyranitar, which is 4x weak to Fighting by them in most cases. Mega Lucario resists Tyranitar's dual STAB combination and can OHKO Tyranitar with either Close Combat or Aura Sphere. Similarly, Scrafty resists Tyranitar's STAB moves and is capable of OHKOing can OHKO Tyranitar with Drain Punch, simultaneously healing off any damage it has taken done to it in the process. Fighting-type coverage moves, such as Power-Up Punch or Hammer Arm from Mega Kangaskhan, will quickly dispatch of Tyranitar. Tyranitar must also fear the rare Sacred Sword from Aegislash.

**Status Conditions**: While not the most direct way of dealing with Tyranitar, status conditions cripple certain sets. For instance, the Dragon Dance set will have a far harder time sweeping once burned. The Choice Scarf set and, (AC) to a lesser extent, (AC) the Dragon Dance set are rendered near useless if paralyzed, (add space) as they are hugely focused towards Speed.

Tyranitar has a lot going for it; With good Attack, Special Attack, and mixed bulk., (period -> comma) Tyranitar has a lot going for it. On top of that, (AC) its ability, Sand Stream, (AC) induces sand upon switching in, which boosts Tyranitar's Special Defense. Sand is seen as a neutral weather, as it neither boosts nor weakens any types offensively; there is also a lack of Pokemon able to take advantage of sand in VGC. Because of this, Tyranitar is often used to take on opposing weather setters, mainly Mega Charizard Y. Tyranitar has an extensive movepool, which, (AC) along with its stats, allows it to play multiple roles, including that of a special attacker or a Dragon Dance sweeper. While Tyranitar's Speed may seem lacking when compared to its other stats, it is enough for Tyranitar to effectively use a Choice Scarf. Tyranitar is also blessed with an incredibly powerful Mega Evolution. With a base 164 Attack stat, Mega Tyranitar hits incredibly hard, and with massive 100 / 150 / 120 bulk, it can be incredibly hard very difficult (consider this for variety, you used "incredibly hard" in the first part of the sentence) to take down.

It is important that most Dragon Dance-lacking Tyranitars should be special attackers due to the many Intimidate and Will-O-Wisp users in the metagame. Tyranitar's Rock / Dark typing leaves it with seven weaknesses, four of which are common. Moves

Tyranitar usually opts for Rock Slide over Stone Edge, (AC) as it can usually OHKO Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame even with an Attack-lowering nature and is a spread move. Protect is an important move for Tyranitar, as though Tyranitar has a high damage output, it is relatively slow and therefore requires its teammates to take down the foes that threaten it; Protect buys a free turn to allow for this to happen. Alternatively, Tyranitar could use the moves Dark Pulse / Ice Beam / Fire Blast / Protect, which would allow Tyranitar to have its desired special coverage, but it would lose its ability to counter Talonflame and Mega Charizard Y.

Set Details

While Tyranitar could use a more complex spread, it primarily needs to hit as hard and as fast possible; the given spread achieves this. A Modest nature allows Tyranitar to hit harder; however, a Timid nature to allows Tyranitar to outspeed a few other Pokemon, such as uninvested base 100s. Life Orb boosts the power of Tyranitar's attacks so that it can hit harder than it otherwise would. Tyranitar's ability Sand Stream automatically induces sand, which allows Tyranitar to check opposing weather teams.

Usage Tips
========

A lot of Tyranitar's utility is in its ability to shut down opposing weather teams; if the opponent has a weather inducer, it might be worth bringing Tyranitar to be able to come in when the opponent's weather is set up. Because of Tyranitar's sheer power and coverage, it can be used to KO Pokemon to allow its teammates to have an easier time, making Tyranitar a decent lead option.

Team Options
========

Talonflame is a decent partner for Tyranitar, being able to OHKO most Grass- and Fighting-types, many of Tyranitar's common checks. Talonflame can also be used to deal damage to and ensure that Tyranitar can pick up KOs it would otherwise miss out on; for Talonflame to be able to perform this role consistently, it should run Choice Band so that it can to have the highest damage output possible. However In addition, Talonflame can also set up Tailwind, which bolsters Tyranitar's otherwise mediocre Speed stat to the point where it can outspeed most other Pokemon. Aegislash beats Mega Kangaskhan as well as and Fighting-types, which both seriously threaten Tyranitar. Aegislash also provides Wide Guard support, which blocks super effective Earthquakes. Trick Room setters, such as Gardevoir and Gourgeist-XL (<- this is bolded for some reason when it shouldn't be), can be used to support Tyranitar. Gardevoir beats Fighting-types both offensively and defensively, (RC) and is can spread burns. While Gourgeist-XL cannot beat Fighting-types offensively, it works great with Tyranitar because it can spread burns and is immune to Fighting-type moves. Thanks to their synergy Gourgeist-XL and Tyranitar are a great pair.

Few Pokemon resist Tyranitar's has a STAB combination, (RC) with very little resisting both of Crunch and Rock Slide. Dragon Dance is the main reason to run physical Tyranitar, as it boostings both Tyranitar's Attack and Speed and solvings two of Tyranitar's problems: its relatively low Speed and the Intimidate's Attack drop. Protect is crucial to this set, as with Dragon Dance boosts, Tyranitar is likely to be double targeted to prevent it from sweeping; Protect blocks these attacks and allows Tyranitar's ally to remove the threat.

After going for Dragon Dance once, Tyranitar will be able to outspeed opposing Choice Scarf Tyranitar, (AC) as well as 2HKO Garchomp with Crunch. A Jolly nature is almost required on non-Mega Tyranitar to allow +1 Tyranitar to outspeed Garchomp, as with an Adamant nature, +1 Tyranitar will Speed tie with Garchomp.

Aegislash is immune to Fighting-type moves and can block spread moves such as Earthquake and Dazzling Gleam, (RC) with Wide Guard, aiding Tyranitar in setting up.

Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Rock Slide / Stone Edge
move 2: Dark Pulse
move 3: Fire Blast
move 4: Ice Beam
ability: Sand Stream
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Timid

Moves
========

Rock Slide OHKOes Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame, (RC) even with a Timid nature. Fire Blast hits Steel-types, which would otherwise be able to completely wall this set, for super effective damage. Ice Beam OHKOes Dragon-types such as Garchomp and Salamence.

Set Details
========

Tyranitar should run max Special Attack and Speed investment to ensure that it hits as hard and fast as possible. With Choice Scarf and a Timid nature, Tyranitar will outspeed max Speed base 115s. Alternatively, (AC) running 228 Speed EVs or a Modest nature ensures that Tyranitar is slower than Modest Choice Scarf Politoed, allowing Tyranitar to set up sand before Politoed can set up rain so that Tyranitar gets up sand against Polioted, giving Tyranitar the advantage. With 228 Speed EVs and a Timid nature, Tyranitar can not won't outspeed base 115s Speed, (AC) but it will still outspeeds Mega Lucario. With a Modest nature, Tyranitar will outspeeds Pokemon with base 100s Speed but will Speed tie with Garchomp.

Usage Tips
========

Choice Scarf Tyranitar plays well as a lead to pick up a surprise KO at the start of a game., (period -> comma) Choice Scarf, Tyranitar often endsing up acting as a hit-and-run Pokemon. Choice Scarf Tyranitar It plays well late-game, as it can easily pick off weakened Pokemon with its strong coverage moves.

Team Options
========

Choice Scarf Tyranitar requires more offensive support than other sets due to its lack of Protect. Talonflame can easily pick off Fighting-types and Steel-types with Brave Bird and Flare Blitz, respectively; while because Tyranitar can perform the latter role with Fire Blast, it can means Tyranitar can pick an alternative move to be locked into with having Talonflame support means that Tyranitar can choose to be locked into a different move.

Assault Vest can boost Tyranitar's Special Defense to the point where Tyranitar it is capable of taking Mega Lucario's Aura Sphere in sand. Tyranitar on a Trick Room team, should Go for Protect on the turn that Trick Room is set up, ensuring that Tyranitar will be able to make use of Trick Room. Flamethrower is a weaker but more accurate version of Fire Blast; it should only be used for this consistency, as the loss in power is noticeable. Tyranitar can make use of Choice Specs, which allows it to hit significantly harder than it could with Life Orb and make better use of more reliable moves such as Flamethrower, but it loses the ability to switch moves. Due to the higher damage output, Choice Specs Tyranitar can make better use of more consistent moves such as Flamethrower. Tyranitar can make use of certain Berries, most notably Roseli, Chople, and Shuca Berries, which weaken Fairy-, Fighting-, (the hyphen is bolded when it shouldn't be) and Ground-type moves respectively. While these berries mean that Tyranitar can't make use of other potentially more useful items, they ensure that Tyranitar will be able to get off use at least one attack. A slow, bulky special attacking set with an EV spread of 252 HP / 148 Def / 108 SpA and a Quiet nature and Leftovers is possible, using the same moves as the special attacking set. However, (AC) this set is somewhat inferior to the Assault Vest set in its ability to take hits, however, (RC) though if used correctly, it can have better longevity. Tyranitar has access to Taunt, which can be used to shut down Pokemon which that are reliant on on non-damaging moves, such as Aegislash. Taunt can be hard to fit into sets, however, as Tyranitar is fairly reliant on its coverage moves. Tyranitar has access to Thunder Wave and Rock Tomb, two forms of speed control. Thunder Wave quarters the foe's Speed and has a chance to paralyze the prevent the foe and potentially prevent it from moving. Rock Tomb is a single-target damaging Rock-type move that lowers the foe's Speed stat by one stage, but this drop is lost after switching out. Snarl is a Dark-type spread move which lowers the foes' Special Attack stats by one stage.

Though Tyranitar is normally slower than Politoed, Rain Dance is a common move on Politoed which and ensures that the rain is set up against Tyranitar.

Azumarill is cam can take any hit from Tyranitar and can either retaliate with a Play Rough or set up Belly Drum. Gardevoir is capable of 2HKOing Tyranitar in the sand with Moonblast and can also potentially burn physical sets. Mega Mawile fears Fire Blast from Tyranitar, which won't OHKO it unless Tyranitar is a Choice Specs variant, and Mawile can OHKO back with Play Rough.

**Ground-types**: Ground-types, such as Mamoswine and Garchomp, threaten Tyranitar with their powerful STAB Earthquake. Garchomp, however, must be wary of Tyranitar's running that invest enough in bulk to survive an Earthquake, as Ice Beam will OHKO it.

**Grass-types**: Mega Venusaur is can take any hit from special Tyranitar, and between Leech Seed, Synthesis, and Giga Drain, Mega Venusaur is capable of healing off any damage.

**Fighting-types and Fighting-type Coverage Moves**: Fighting-type moves can be easily OHKO Tyranitar, which is 4x weake to Fighting. Mega Lucario resists Tyranitar's dual STAB combination and can OHKO Tyranitar with either Close Combat or Aura Sphere. Similarly, Scrafty resists Tyranitar's STAB moves and is can OHKO Tyranitar with Drain Punch, simultaneously healing off any damage it has taken in the process. Fighting-type coverage moves, such as Power-Up Punch or Hammer Arm from Mega Kangaskhan and the rare Sacred Sword from Aegislash, will quickly dispatch Tyranitar. Tyranitar must also fear the rare Sacred Sword from Aegislash.

**Status Conditions**: While not the most direct way of dealing with Tyranitar, Status conditions cripple certain sets., (period -> comma) for instance, the Dragon Dance set will have a far harder time sweeping once if it is burned. The Choice Scarf set, and to a lesser extent the Dragon Dance set, are rendered near useless if paralyzed, as they are hugely focused towards Speed.

On top of that its ability, (RC) Sand Stream, (RC) induces sand upon switching in, which boosts Tyranitar's Special Defense.
I made that change because it's correct. Don't add commas around "Sand Stream."

Status conditions cripple certain sets,; for instance, the Dragon Dance set will have a hard time sweeping if it is burned.
Replace that comma with a semicolon.
