Umbreon Discussion

The only thread on Umbreon was started last year.

http://serebii.net/pokedex-dp/197.shtml

In the previous generation, Umbreon had only 1 purpose: to pass Mean Look. It still only has that purpose.

Support Moves:
Baton Pass
Mean Look
Moonlight
Sand Attack
Confuse Ray
Screech
Charm
Yawn
Wish*
Tickle
Fake Tears
Helping Hand

If you really need a damaging move on Umbreon, I suppose Dark Pluse would be ok. It really depends on what you want to do. Hidden Power Fighting for a chance with Tyranitar!

Movesets:
@Focus Strip
- Mean Look
- Baton Pass
- Charm
- Taunt

This one specifically made to surprise Heracross, but it's very gimmcky and it only works if Heracross were to switch in. The ideal situation would be:

Umbreon and a Pokemon that is scared of Umbreon is on the field
Opponent withdraws Pokemon; sends out Heracross!
Umbreon uses Mean Look!
Opponent uses Infight/Megahorn!
Focus Strip activates; Umbreon uses Baton Pass!

And then you are off to something that can set up on Heracross, and hopefully sweep an entire team. I'm guessing that Gyarados might be a good choice, as it MAY be able to set up on Skarmory too (hence Taunt on Umbreon). As with all setups, Gyarados has to be aware of the inevitable critical hits. Also, I'm assuming that Heracross will have Choice Band (or Adherence Scarf), which may not be the case.

edit: fixed some grammar mistakes and elaborated on some ideas

edit 2: ack, I don't think this will work at all; Umbreon has to be hit on the first turn for Focus Strip to activate, and this requires it to be hit on the second turn. :(

edit 3: nevermind, Focus Band still activates even during the second turn, as long as your HP is full. I'll do some more testing on the HP issue.

...at which point you would KO hera in return for umbreon being somewhere between useless and dead if it switches in, depending on whether your opponent has spikes/stealth rock out.

I can do that with Dugtrio, and have it be far more versatile besides.

Mean Look/Yawn/Protect/BP might be fun.

no egg move is illegal since eevee belongs in the ground egg group smeagle can give it any of its egg moves

Umbreon is next to useless afterwards, but if it were to pull it off, it would have served its purpose.

I chose the moves with Surgo's team building basics in mind; seeing how you can't counter everything, you have to take a chance with a suprising stradegy to overcome your opponent. With Umbreon, an analogy I have is playing volleyball; your teammates will set up the ball for you to spike - if the spike is succesful, you get a point; if not, then your opponent has the upperhand and had a chance to spike the ball back to your side, which hopefully you can save. Likewise, Umbreon is the one setting the ball up for another Pokemon to plow through (Gyarados, Salamence, Mismagius?!?!). Hopefully it was successful. Hopefully it was fierce (Tyra Banks style). But if wasn't, then yeah, it will definitely be hard to recover.

I'm going to take advantage of the Heracross ubiquity on Wifi and breed an Eevee to try this out; there are probably a lot more flaws then I thought. I'll get back to yall.

off topic: does anyone know all the funky methods you can modify your text with? Being computer illiterate, I only know how to bold, italize and alter text size. I also wanted to put a picture up there to make the thread more friendly, but have no clue how to do so.

Umbreon has far more problems competing now. Somersaulters screw up his attempts to Mean Look and he's basically a free switch-in for many of deadly sweepers and CBers. Every other wall has a way of causing acceptable damage, while Umbreon is stuck with Dark Pulse from his rather poor special attack.

I'd probably run something like this :

- Wish
- Protect
- Tickle
- Pursuit

Tickle to soften up the inevitable Heracross hit for your next Pokemon and make it easier to finish off the bug. Protect to scout what Hera is going to do and heal after a Wish. Pursuit won't do much but could work ok if you get in on a CG Alakazam Psychic and such. Honestly I wouldn't use him, but that's because I tend to shy away from any Pokemon that can't attack too well - even defensive ones.

Fake Tears/Dark Pulse/Wish/Protect if you want a rather unorthodox Azelf counter.

I'm really like this set:

Wish/Pusuit/Screech/filler with Stealth Rock/Spike support, gives a good Wish support while doing some decent damage on switches.

I don't really like the looks of Umbreon this generation, as Taunt now lasts from 2-4 turns, so Umbreon will be disabled for a long time if it gets Taunted, and there are just too many things capable of statting up and 2HKOing or just a sheer 2HKO/OHKO in the case of things like Heracross.

Umbreon also benefits from the better Taunt, though.

Heracross, CBtar, and Taunt Gyarados are Umbreon's biggest counters, and at the moment all of those are being used on around 90% of teams. If the metagame shifts, Umbreon could be good, but at the moment it's a little useless. It might still be good for Wish support, though.

You know, I think it is pretty shortsighted to start an analysis by saying Umbreon "still only has one purpose" and not botherwing to post anything other than a support movepool.

Here is my thought:

Umbreon @ Leftovers
Careful (+SD, -SA)
EVS: 216 HP/40 Atk/252 SD
~ Curse
~ Quick Revenge
~ Wish
~ Taunt/Baton Pass

Now that Umbreon gets some STAB on physical moves, Umbreon can not only pass Curse, but also use it to its fullest extent. This set utilizes that ability, keeping Umbreon as a fat POS that does not die to special attacks while pumping up defense and attack. Pseudo-Hazer comes in? Sorry Skarm, gon have to Taunt you before you WW. Otherwise, Curse gets you bulkier and bulkier, and Quick Revenge means anything that hits you first (say, something that got Taunted?) Gets to eat a 100 BP STAB Dark attack. Wish keeps Umby alive and allows it to remain in the team suppport role, and the alternative to Taunt is Baton Pass. This doesn't help much against P-hazers unless you have physical Cradily waiting in the wings.

Most things that switch into Umbreon (Tyranitar, Heracross, Infernape, etc) have dark resist though, so Quick Revenge won't hurt much. Around 56 hit points to Heracross. It survives In Fight after a Curse with a little HP left though, which then you can pass 1 Curse. Yeah, I was being a little ignorant when I said that Umbreon only has one purpose. :(

Umbreon: Leftovers
Bold
128 def, 128 sp def, 4 evs hp.

Mean Look
Yawn
Baton Pass
Wish/Taunt/Curse

Sleep Trapper. (The only one, other than Smeargle). You can be risky without Wish and use Taunt, but Wish or perhaps Curse is probably best.

Look, no one here has discussed the one move which Umbreon was really built for: Snatch! It has the defences to survive a mispredicted hit and BP to put what it snatches to good use. If you use it right, Umbreon will give you one of the following:

A) A blissey, dead from toxic and all the AT/Softboiled snatching.

B) Some nice snatched speed from a DDmence if you open with Umbreon
and also some nice snatched attack from a DDtar, which canbe BPd to
your own sweeper.

C) A screwed over Ninjask! Lol, its no fun when you can only BP speed
boost and not a couple of SDs or a Sub.

D) A darn good wall, with 130 Base Sp.Def & 110 Base Def.

Iknow so many people who think that snatch is just too hard to use right.

Oh yeah, a moveset.

Umbreon@Focus Strip
Bold(+Def/-Atk)
252 HP/128 Def/128 Sp.Def
Toxic
BP
Snatch
Moonlight/Wish(depends on how good your prediction is.)

Umbreon is my favourite pokemon!!

i don't think so at least it never did in 2v2 in advance if you wisp/toxic a sync pokemon with your partner

I think Sychronize only works if your opponent hits you with a status attack. So Lopunny Sneaking a Flame Orb on to Umbreon would probably not activate.

If I'd use Umbreon, I'd use Charm. Heracross will have to watch his mouth before coming in, and he makes an okay Curselax stopper with that as well, if that's ever going to be used again.

In the previous generation, Umbreon had only 1 purpose: to pass Mean Look. It still only has that purpose.

I beg to differ. My favourite set for Umbreon in Advance is just using fourfrom
- Wish / Moonlight
- Pursuit
- Protect
- Charm
- Toxic
- Baton Pass

Simply because Umbreon can switch in on about anything, especially Gengar, and help the team with Wish, while taking care of Snorlax or even Salamence in a pinch with Charm.

I do like your avatar though.

I dont' use Toxic much anymore.... I think confuse ray is better since it can get steel pokemon as well... and usually forces a switch... bulky sweepers like metagross or like blissey will just stay even if you toxic... or pokemon on haracross would even activate guts >_> I guess you could run BOTH on Umbreon...

So for a movesets it could be

Umbreon @ Leftovers
Bold Nature
252HP/128def/128sdef

Confuse Ray
Toxic
Baton Pass
Mean Look

I also beginning to like the CurseBreon ... btw does Curses' -spd affect gets passed on as well??? that kind of limits to the pokemon you can pass it to o_O

Umbreon @ Left Overs
Bold Nature
252HP/252SDEF/4DEF

Confuse Ray/Toxic/Yawn (choose 2, but not Toxic AND Yawn)
Curse
Baton Pass

Or you could run a more standard variant like

Umbreon @ Left Over
252HP/128SDEF/128DEF

Charm
Baton Pass
Mean Look
Moon Light/Yawn
-or-
Charm
Confuse Ray/Yawn/Toxic
Wish
-or-
Switch all 252DEF to 252SDEF
Charm
Baton Pass
Curse
Moon Light

You shouldn't run a mean look set without moon light... wish is probably not fast enough to give you the needed heal. If you want Wish, use Confuse Ray or Yawn, and Mean Look with Moonlight or Yawn.

I'm running...

Umbreon@Leftovers
Calm
252HP / 252SpDef
-Protect
-Wish
-Dark Pulse
-Yawn

...right now for the sole purpose of dark resist. Wish support is cool though. 51-60% from CSmence metoric swarm. Pretty good special wall.

I really wanted to use this set that I thought up of:

Umbreon @ Leftovers
HP 252/Defense 252/Attack 6
~Assurance
~Swagger
~Psych up
~Toxic/Protect

More of a hax set if anything but this is a pretty fun set to use. Esspecially if heracross gets hit by this. Swagger Hera then hope it hits itself. It dies in one hit usually.

im gonna go with
umbreon @ leftovers
252 def/252 sp def/4something
-curse
-baton pass
-sub
-[insert move here]

bping to a white herb ninjask. unfortunately, this leaves me very afraid of jolteon.
