Umbreon + Gardevoir

Hi all, I was reading about this website on another site, and everyone talked about it as if it were THE website if you're looking for information about Pokemon... so here I am needing some assistance! I hope this is the right area; I didn't think the Rate My Team area was appropriate yet, since I don't even have half a team, nor did I really see anywhere where new people could ask dumb questions. If this is the wrong place, I'm sorry. :(

Anyway, I'm looking to start building a team, but I'm relatively new to the whole competitive aspect of the game and at times there are just so many choices I'm left overwhelmed! I've looked over tier lists and things of that nature, but there are just so many choices....

I'd really like to use Umbreon and Gardevoir in some capacity, but I'm not really sure what would compliment them well. My friend really wants me to use the big fat Hippo, but I'm thinking his sandstorm ability thing would be counterproductive to the other two I really really want to use. Ugh!

So anyway, is it possible I could make a team with both of them effectively? I'm certainly ok sacrificing a little competitiveness for having a team of pokemon I appreciate looking at. I guess my main qualm is just a little help narrowing down this huge list of over 500 pokemon into a smaller groups I could pick from to fill specific roles in the group. What are some good pokemon that would work well with Umbreon and Gardevoir?

Oh, and I can never find an answer to this question, which probably means there is no difference, but is there a difference between males and females when battling? I get the concepts of breeding, but I was just wondering if using a male in a battle would have different characteristics than a female?

Thanks for any help.

Oh and I forgot to add I really like Hitmontop! He's so funny.

You could try Chaosbreon with Yawn (Mean Look/Wish/Baton Pass/Yawn) to trap opponents and put them to sleep, then Baton Pass the Mean Look to a Calm Mind Gardevoir (Calm Mind/Thunderbolt/Psychic/Filler) who can use the sleeping pokemon as a chance to boost her immense Special Attack and Special Defense even further with Calm Mind. The last move for Gardevoir can be either Safeguard, to protect against status, Substitute to withstand one attack, or Hidden Power if you can get an Ice or Fire typed power.

Hello, and welcome to Smogon! You've already made a good impression with me by not being retarded on your first post, so I'll help you out.

The easy answer first: there is no significant difference between males and females in battling. If you battle on shoddy, the default is male, so I find it a good idea to change that to kill the hopes of people who use Attract (it's happened to me). Other than that, there's nothing.

Next, looking at Gardevoir and Umbreon as specific pokemon tends not to be a good idea. What you need to do is think of them as a special sweeper and mixed wall/statuser. Basic team strategy tells us that a solid team needs at least 1 special wall, 1 physical wall, 1 statuser, 1 mixed sweeper, 1 physical sweeper, and 1 special sweeper. It's sort of confusing, but as you practice more and more, you'll be able to more successfully identify these types for what they are. That's just a short answer, and I'm sure someone will give a more in-depth one, but good luck.

You could try hitmontech.
Hitmontop - Leftovers
Adamant, Technician
Aerial Ace/Earthquake
Mach Punch
Bulk Up
Stone Edge

Blissey fits in almost every team. You could give Gardevoir HP fighting as safeguard wouldn't be that useful once you've set up.

I beg to differ; Safeguard will help you more against Blissey than HP Fighting would.

I beg to differ; Mismagius (Who works in a similar fashion) is not walled by Blissey if it carries HP fight. CM in its face, Sub up to avoid status, HP fighting will completely destroy it once you have a couple CMs.

Therefore, I suggest- HP-Fight/ Calm Mind/ Psychic/ Sub

You forget 1 important thing though Lex, Mismagius is immune to Seismic Toss. That means she CAN set up in the face of Blissey and lol at it.

Safeguard is probably preferable I guess, since its a 5 turn anti-status.

A super effective HP fighting is only 5bp more powerful than a STABbd psychic (140 vs. 135). The reason mismagius needs hp fighting is that its stabbed shadow ball is immuned by blissey. But then again, HP fighting is good against steel type and stuff. However, I like HP fire or thunderbolt better.

HP Fighting and Psychic are both a 3HKO against Blissey after a couple of Calm Minds, and Blissey can still Thunderwave or Sing you. Safeguard stops that.

If you need to deal with Steels, use Thunderbolt. If you need to deal with Steelix, use Hidden Power Fire. HP Fighting has no place on a Gardevoir set.

Thanks everyone with their suggestions thus far. I've been working on trying to narrow down a list of other possible additions to the team. I guess that's a great thing about this game, so many choices make so many different possibilities!

I was also thinking about PorygonZ, but it seems to fall in the same category as what Gardevoir would be accomplishing, so I would probably have to decided between the two.

I think I'm going to use Heracross as my physical sweeper. He looks awesome. I just worry about that 4x weakness to flying. 4x weak to anything scares me really.

Could Hitmontop function as a wall? I seem to need a couple of those!

Also, is Leech Seed a decent move when battling? It's amazing against computer AI, but I fear it wouldn't be as successful in a competitive environment.

I have another question regarding the 2v2 option upstairs in the pokecenter. Does this mean I could team up with a friend and we could battle two other people? Or does it just mean it's a double battle where I'd be using two pokemon at a time? If it was teaming up with a friend that would so awesome.

Thanks for the continued help! I'm sure I'll have some more questions as I learn.

Building the team is your job. If you're lost, the analyses forum is a good place to go.
