GENTLEMAN, THIS IS DEMOCRACY MANIFEST
is a Community Contributoris a Tiering Contributoris a Contributor to Smogon
The manager and their assistant are able to purchase themselves for a variable cost that uses the following calculation: 12,000 credits + (1000 x the players' total W/L record across the most recent individual PLs). The PLs considered are AGPL, 1v1PL, NFEPL, and ZUPL. For example, if a player went 5-2 in the most recent ZUPL and 1-2 in the most recent AGPL, their total win/loss record is 6-4, resulting in a positive score of 2, and they would cost 14,000 credits. In the event that a player has maintained a negative record, managers and their assistants will maintain a minimum price of 12,000 credits. The budget of auctions is fixed at 100,000 for a minimum of 10 players.
just going to take a moment to point out that this system has numerous flaws which are not conducive to a good draft. i understand the intent was to 'balance' managers buying themselves (with some managers being considered 'steals' at a more standard price like 15k and others being overpay) but the current system is not fleshed out at all.

tack.png

the determining factors for a manager's price do not accurately represent a manager's skill. using past PLs is understandable, but:
1 - oldgens for some reason affect prices? like tack stated in the screenshot above, they'd be priced at 20k because they had a good record in BW ZU, a tier that has absolutely no relevance to UMPL. if the reasoning for this is "filtering out oldgen games is too much effort" like i've been told, i'd like to point out:
a- there's only 12 players to look into
b- the extra hassle is evidence of the current system being bad

tack is also hardly the only example of this. hys is one of the top current gen nfe players but would cost 12k because he went 3-6 in sm nfe. in contrast, ho3n costs 18k largely because he went 5-2 in oras nfe. neither of these tiers should have any bearing on UMPL but for some reason currently do.
i don't feel any inclination to look at the 1v1/ag/zu standings in great detail but i'd put money on similar results occurring in other tiers.

2 - the PLs being looked at may as well be oldgens; in the finals of ZUPL II, klang and stonjourner were S rank pokemon. at the time of writing this, stonjourner is unranked, and klang's evolution klinklang is sitting comfortably in the c ranks (edit: ston is C+ too, point still stands). the data used to determine prices is wack. this is especially notable in the case of landon, someone who has already signed up as a manager.
to elaborate on this, landon won the most recent ZU open and is currently considered to be one of the best ZU players in current meta, but went 1-3 in the most recent ZUPL and is currently priced at 13,000, just 1000 distant from the minimum possible manager value.

1v1 is in an equally odd situation, because unless the intent is to use a year+ old PL (doubtful) their current PL is still ongoing, meaning any aspiring 1v1 player is not going to know how much they actually cost as a manager/assman until the 10th of april (? actual 1v1 players please correct me if i'm wrong) at the earliest, almost a full week after managers are chosen. this impacts their expected budget and i can only assume (i've never managed before) delays their draft plans.

3 - the current system does not take into account that a manager can only play one tier at any given time. if someone like ho3n (proficient in both zu and nfe) opts to manage and buy himself, he still has to purchase a player for whatever tier he isn't focused on. assuming he chooses to play NFE (just as an example), he's being priced 3K higher than he should be just because he's also capable of flexing into ZU. this is a minor issue compared to the aforementioned problems, largely because of the decision to only charge 1000 credits per win, but it's still an issue. it deters good players from dipping their toes into other tiers and could be far more noticeable next year if this tour inspires UM players to branch out more. using ho3n as an example again, if he were to meet the same record next year and also add a 2-0 record in ag & 1v1 as a sub slot he's jumping from 18k to 22k and he's still only playing one tier at any given time. if oldgens arent included (they shouldn't be) this also impacts pricing because if ho3n commits to only playing oldgens while staying up to date with current meta he's effectively costing nothing for the next umpl because he technically has no records to base his skill off of. including oldgens is not a solution to this because oldgen ability has little to no bearing on current gen ability.

4 - NFE and 1v1's most recent PL went on for two more weeks than ZU & AG. 1v1's current PL also currently has a tiebreak in semis and could possibly have a tiebreak in finals. this means that a top player in NFE or 1v1 is statistically likely to cost upwards of 2000 more than a top player in ZU or AG which just doesn't make sense for player ranking. players should not be punished for playing in longer tours.

potential fixes, in order from worst to best:

3 - fuck it bro let managers play in as many slots they want to make up for the fact they're costing credits for every tier they've played
pros: funny
cons: none at all, definitely.

2 - go the whole hog with the current system; put the work in and use more up to date, accurate data. scrap ZUPL data, use ZU seasonal data. scrap NFEPL data, use NFE Open or OMPL & OMFL data. i have no idea what the most up to date records would be for the other two tiers but hopefully there's something relatively recent to work off.
pros: gives a far better representation of how good a player actually is at their tier, allows hosts to base tiering off most recent current gen results available.
cons: still not going to be accurate, especially when ZU is having likely meta-changing shifts tonight and NFE may or may not be having some pretty sharp meta changes relatively soon. to be blunt there's no good way of trying to balance out prices. which is why fixed pricing is the only reasonable solution in my mind. players who have had a dip in activity and not played in the recent tour (but have still been active in the community) will not have data (this is also a current problem).

1 - easily the best solution and it's not even close; do what every other pl does and use fixed pricing. 15k is my personal shout because it's low enough for realistically any manager (managers tend to be good at at least one of the tiers) to at least consider buying themselves, and high enough to not be an absolute steal for most players, at least when factoring in the fact that the players also have to manage and will likely have to split their efforts across multiple tiers. i've been informed that ubers pl uses 20k which i think is fine too, more punishing for worse-playing managers but still a solid choice if there's concern that certain managers might still be massively underpaid for. zu uses 12.5k which imo is far too low but whatever, it's still better than having one of the best ZU players at 13K and a worse ZU player (no offence intended ho3n ily) costing 5k more based off an oldgen performance.
in truth the price itself doesn't matter so much as the consistency does. there's no fair way of determining the "worth" of a player in the tiers UMPL is going to involve so it's better to just have everyone at the same flat number.
pros: no way for hosts to manipulate prices (i don't think it'd be characteristic of any of the hosts to do this, but preventing even the chance of it is objectively good for the tour), no room for disagreements over individual manager pricing, debatably "fairest" way of pricing.
cons: someone who feels confident managing on their own effectively gets a free pick for 15,000. could fix this by removing ass men but i know people like ass men. could also fix this by raising prices to 20k like ubers does.

to be completely blunt i think any decision that doesn't result in fixed pricing is a bad decision, but i understand there's multiple factors at play and not everyone can be happy with the end result. thank you for reading.

gm so I wanted to showcase my zu credentials here a bit. I know that I haven't played much since last zupl - when Mudbray was like A tier or something - and before that before the SM Shiftry ban - you're welcome, btw - but I still wanted to showcase how in touch I am with the most problematic part of the metagame currently.

As you can see, I've been having a grudge against this broken mon for about a year and a half, and nothing will give me more pleasure than rant after getting 6-0d by it during umpl. Oh, someone might ask, wtf happened on April 14th 2020? Well it's a day after my birthday so initial reaction was I was probably drunk, but fear not, I investigated:

1618464790762.png

So clearly a small moment of delusion, but not that big a deal. Plus Vikavolt is already banned so I still sound smort I swear

NFE PLAYERS PR BY JR

players signed up for nfe: Feaniix, BloodAce, pileosand, JonAmon 25, xbossarux, professor tox, Greybaum, melancholy hills, monsareeasy, Sevelon, megatyler30, Hitmonstars, StitChuu, lph, Raahel, 447323a, risin_glory, Rav3ndan, Dr. Mirbro, tlenit, giove97, CrazyStevy, I'm hate hats, euFeatured, ayedan, ShwiftyShiftry, Hys, pinkdragontamer, Antares, AwakenedGaming, Serene Grace, Straponsolo, S1nn0hC0nfirm3d, Alkione, 85percent, quagsgone, xavgb, Lord Thorx, Maki, Sagisolar, WMAR, King Leo V, velvet, frisoeva, MinoGod54, fraises des bois, Fille, TFCP, OranBerryBlissey10, xbossarux, Ron 50, Bilbooo, czim, Fragments, T+L=The Legend

Im just gonna name the top players from this list that actually play nfe (tournament players and Straponsolo cuz manager excluded)

14 professor tox - one of the newer ss players that has done a ton of rmts and hosted our latest project in nfe. tox has a lot of out-of-the-box ideas and could definitely surprise a lot of players with his building style!

13 pileosand - this player has been on the rise lately, good nfepl, drafted for omwcop and open semis. overall a solid player that should definitely go drafted!

12 Fille - Great lc and nfe player in sm still is doing really well these days in lc. with his creativity I think he will easily adapt to the current meta and get some wins.

11 quagsgone - quags was gone for some time and is getting used to ss right now, he was one of the best sm players and I've already played him in some tests and he can definitely take some games off people in this pool but he isn't at his sm peak again.

10 OranBerryBlissey10 - OBB has sometimes insane ideas trying to make every mon viable when they really arent but he has recently shown great consistency going really far in nfe open until finals

9 85percent - 85 is a bit busier these days but still occasionally builds in ss. He is definitely a good player as well and deserves to be drafted.

8 rav3ndan - besides being a good zu player, rav is also very solid in nfe. He can build very well and has the plays to back it up too. I believe he just falls a little short against the top end of the players but is a very good middle-of-the-pack player.

7 hys - hys was kinda invisible in the nfe community for some time now but has recently shown his name out there again as he won the nfe no titans tournament. hys has great potential to overperform with this ongoing momentum and can be a very interesting player in this tour.

6 Greybaum - council member so he knows the tier very well. he can play very well as well as building himself and should definitely be one of your shortlisted nfe picks-ups.

5 S1nn0hC0nfirm3d - With his weird ho builds and great playing ability s1nn0h should be one of the better players in this pool. what separates him from the top 3 for me is his teambuilding style which can be exploited with some good prep. lol he is manager

4 King Leo V (playoffs) - I just decided to rank leo for what he is at his best since I have no fucking clue how I would rank him if he isn't trying his best. I don't think there is much for me to say about leo since his sign-up post already says enough.

3 tlenit - Has recently had a great nfe open run where he just lost in finals, tlenit looks to be one of the players to beat in this nfe pool. Every manager should know him for his great playing ability and he can build some of his own teams as well even though I'm not sure if he will in this tournament.

2 frisoeva - frisoeva is probably the best player playing-wise in this pool. I do think his teams can have some weaknesses at times so he is not the number 1 player in the entire pool.

1 xavgb - the undisputed number 1 imo. stresh has great talent playing and building wise and is a great authority when it comes to nfe. I'm expecting managers to break the bank to get stresh as he would rarely lose.

1v1 has good builders and good clickers - drafting a mix of both will make for a successful team. A lot of 1v1 mains don't play many other tiers, so they'll most be building as a small group. These slots are just as important as any 6v6 slot, so be wise with who you choose for players and support.

:conkeldurr:Builders:conkeldurr:
1v1 battles are often won and lost with prep decisions - having one or two good builders on board will help greatly. These players will be sure to build good teams, some are just much better at it than others

Tournament Banned
lots of ag players signed up for this tour so gonna make a personal player vr cause judging players is what I love to do!! since there are too many to name, I'm only gonna go with the top 16 with a couple honorable mentions (I'm not gonna include managers who are self buying)

{{i didnt realize draft is tomorrow, most of u probably already have a plan rip}}

1. Fc - coming off with the recent ssnl win from winners without dropping a set, its hard to give this spot to anyone else. one of the few players who are more up to date with current trends in the meta, with cool plays and excellent teams. cant go wrong with him.

2. Wsun1 - this was a really tuff choice since there isn't much difference between most of the top 10. wsun got #2 spot for me cause he can play at a high level while still being able to build teams independently + his recent deep run in ssnl.

3. xavgb - not sure if most will agree with this but i was able to see some of his most recent builds a week ago. despite not playing galar ag since snake, he still seems up to do with most of the current trends as far as his builds go and he is a very quick learner so by week 1 he should be able to pick things up easy. his plays are also top-notch as usual. he might be playing nfe tho rip

4. Bread Sandwich - teams are a bit more important in galar ag than actual plays so im putting agl at #4. not saying he isn't a good player, but not necessarily as solid as people like stresh or wsun. despite that, no one can deny his heat builds which I'm sure will bring him a lot of Ws this tour if he gets the chance

5. Geyser - imo still an underrated player within the community. his recent team tour + indi tour results speak for itself. solid builder and player and im sure he is going into this with a fair amount of motivation. can't really go wrong with this guy.

6. Royal1604 - really solid uber players who i have had the pleasure of teaming up with last ag snake. as far as playing-wise goes, he is easily top 3, but might need some slight team support, but i know he can build some heats himself.

7. PinkDragonTamer - very solid player and has played in the last ag snake. he only played natdex in that tour but i know for a fact he helped their galar slot a fair amount. only putting him at 7 because i haven't personally seen him play the meta yet aside from a couple games 3-4 months ago, but just like stresh, he is a super quick learner, and i wouldn't be surprised if he picks up the meta in a week and starts claiming Ws.

8. Pannuracotta - nice player, and super solid teams. he picked up galar in one day and started producing dope teams right away last snake so i'm sure he will do it again this time. can never go wrong with him.

9. lotiasite - long time ag main and solid player. dabbles in galar but have not seen many teams from him. based on past results tho in team tours, he picks up metas fast and can build solid teams in em as well

10. jerryl309 - up and coming ag player who has already proved himself to be a reliable and solid player. going 3-0 last snake in galar, i'm sure he will do just as good this time. really solid pick for any team

11. Shivam3299 - long time ag main and solid galar player. might need help with builds, but with a helper, he'll do very good.

12. Rotten - a very solid ag main with good teams and also plays well. managed to 2-0 the favorite of last ssnl. excellent choice for any manager

13. 64 Squares - very solid player but will need help with teams, only reason he is so low. with a good builder next to him, he will do great.

14. Frozoid - another up-and-coming ag player. done well in ladder and ik he is motivated to do well in this tour. solid player and he can build for himself as well which is a big asset.

15. Sevelon - doesn't really play ag but he has played a few games last snake in it and did super well. i also heard he built his own teams, which makes it even more impressing. overall super solid player. with a builder next to him for help, i'm sure he'll do really good

16. Jojos - very lowkey pick, dont know much about him but from my couple games with him, seems very solid

honorable mentions: Frito135, Yami, NB402141, I Eat Snoms, Paino, Some Bob, Maxomega, StitChuu, agentkeval01, velvet, Lithe Haze(very solid pick), Aquarius Ghost, NomNom414
