Underused Pokemon Matchmaking Phase 2 [Week 29 - Nasty Plot Infernape]

It is close between Eeyore Shiba and DaSpoofy, but I am going to have to go with Shiba, I cant wait for the next core! :)

So this was a close one this week with LetMeShine- winning by 1 vote with a total of 5 votes! Shiba and Pak tied for second with 4 votes. (Really surprised how divided this week was to be honest)

Anyways, this week I decided to do a Mega as I haven't done one in quite awhile. This week is going to be...

abomasnow-mega.gif

This icy forest monster has horrible Speed but great offenses and can do a lot with its great resistances and decent STAB moves while sadly having one of the worst defensive typings in Pokemon history. Good luck, have fun, and see you guys Friday! :)

EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD

Chandelure @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Fire Blast
- Shadow Ball

It's the most common core in hail if i'm not wrong they both defeat her weakness. Chandelure is her to come on a fighting or a fire move and he can defeat some threats for Abomasnow, like Aggron mega, Cobalion (unless stone edge) ect...

Abomasnow is her to defeat the bulky waters, the dragons and the ground type who pressure easily Chandelure, like swampert, suicune, krookodile, hydreigon.

Both faciliate the set up for the other, it's a pretty cool core, but take care to pick a mon with a rock resist to complete the double weakness.

(Take care, Rollout Shuckle do some damages to this core because of the weakness!)

Abomasnow & Tentacruel

The two main reasons why I picked Tentacruel over any of the other mons that could have gone into this spot. 1) Rapid Spin, 2) Toxic Spikes. When it comes to any other water type, yes they can come in on the fire types that threaten abomsnow, but the fire-types can switch out and revenge abomasnow again later. Toxic Spikes help wear down the fire types / fighting types that attempt to revenge ko abomasnow leaving them vulnerable to a +2 ice shard eventually. there isn't any need to explain rapid spin. they also have near perfect type synergy coverage most of each others weaknesses bar psychic for tenta and flying for abomasnow. Tentacruel also helps with the steel types that like to switch in on abomsnow by wearing them down with scald (the burns are always fun too).

Entei and Abomasnow make a devastating core. Abomasnow appreciates Entei's ability to break down bulkier Steel-types, and simply break down opposing walls in general, with absurdly powerful Sacred Fires. On top of this, Sacred Fire's burn rate means wearing down checks left standing will be much easier with the added residual damage. In return, Abomasnow has the ability to break down bulky Water-types, such as Suicune, Vaporeon, and Alomomola with Wood Hammer, as long as there are no Scald burns. However, Entei makes the core a bit weaker to entry hazards, so a Rapid Spin user or Defogger such as Empoleon, who also scares away Rock-types, makes the two companions easier to switch in.

Mega Abomasnow is an excellent Pokemon with 132 / 132 Offensive stats, an excellent movepool, and a pretty solid STAB combination with two high powered moves in its arsenal. Due to its abysmal 30 base Speed, Mega Abomasnow is an excellent wall-breaker in Trick Room, as it is the "fastest" Pokemon in the tier under it. As such, OTR Slowking is the perfect partner to it. Thanks to Regenerator and pretty solid bulk, Slowking can set up Trick Room multiple times during the match. Slowking can also switch into powerful Fighting, Steel, and Fire types, while in return, Mega Abomasnow can easily take on Grass and Electric types.

Infernape @ Life Orb
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 192 Atk / 64 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Close Combat
- Overheat
- Mach Punch/Earthquake/Flare Blitz--- My set is mach punch
- Stone Edge

I chose this core as a wallbreaking core, I had trouble finding some good partners for Abomasnow, because a lot of the people have already taken AMAZING partners (Tenta, Reuniclus, Slowking) I also didn't want to look at smogon for some good partners (Team Options) I wanted to see what I could come up with. I came up with this mixed wallbreaking core. Abomasnow is a great wallbreaker as it has many mixed options and staggering special attack and attack sets, while still packing some nice bulk. However its defensive typing holds this yeti back, as it has MANY common weaknesses, including a 4x times weakness to fire. Blizzard packs a punch and never misses in hail, while giga drain is for sustain, earthquake is for poison and fire types, and ice shard for priority, because the only thing Abomasnow will be outpseeding is Shuckle :).

Infernape now is a partner I came up with for Abomasnow. It handles all of Abomasnows weaknesses well, as it resists FIRE and bug, while providing nuetral damage for rock and many of the other weaknesses. Infernape also provides the faster wallbreaking prowess, with less bulk. I am packing life orb for that extra power, and a mixed set of Overheat, for the special coverage and amazinig stab, while providing the mostly physical side of Close Combat and Stone Edge, as well as mach punch for priority.

I think these two can pair quite well, and give Abomasnow some good chances on teams even without Trick Room or entry hazards, a defogger or spinner would go great as another part of this core, such as Crobat or Tentacruel.

Have a nice day! ~LittleRunnerXC

Hey friend-- might want to get rid of the 180 speed EVs if you've already got the speed IV and nature at negative. Put the EV in attack maybe? Don't want you skimpt on the voting because of something like that :]

Let's play mind games

Abomasnow @ Abomasite
Ability: Soundproof
EVs: 76 HP / 252 Atk / 180 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Substitute
- Wood Hammer
- Ice Shard
- Earthquake

I know this set is usually SD, but Abomasnow's terrible weaknesses means that it suffers from the same problems as Mega Sceptile, namely survivability. So Substitute is the way to go if you want Aboma to be more than a 1 shot teamslot. Being behind a Subsitute allows you to effectively wallbreak with amazing dual STAB. Good Switches into Abomasnow include

Choice Scarf Hoopa? Eeyore, I know your name is a joke, but are your sets jokes now? Well, sorta. See, at +1, Hoopa sits at 393 speed, which may be lower than most other Scarf abusers, but still outspeeds non-max speed

Chandy, Max Speed
229-mega.png
Houndoom-Mega and

Azelf, and

Cobalion. All of these mons are threats to TR Hoop/Snow, but as TR Hoopa is the only one on SmogDex, everyone will just assume you're TR, especially if you add
233MS.png
porygon2
but being able to play with that expectation really gives you momentum. Especially with Destiny Bond, though that can be changed with Thunder Wave, as either are last ditch efforts if Hoopa is going to go down no matter what, to try and save the match.

Beware of
142-mega.png
Mega Aerodactyl, as it can outspeed Aboma and Hoopa. Ice Shard is a 2HKO, so unless Aboma is behind Sub, it can be a huge problem. Max Speed
169.png
Crobat creates a similar issue with access to Brave Bird and decent bulk, though Hoopa can take down non-max speed ones with a well placed Hyperspace Hole. Besides that, most scarfers tend to be a problem, namely
635.png
Hydreigon,
553.png
Krook and
034.png
Nidoking.
680MS.png
Doublade also has an easy time with this core, as Hoopa's paper defenses mean even an unboosted Shadow Sneak is an OHKO at any more than 266 Attack (that's 40 EV without a boosting nature, or 160 if you made your Doublade Modest for some trolly reason. Any Plus Nature brings it over that without any EV's at all) and Iron Head hits hard, without Abomasnow being able to answer with anything that could hit for more than 40%.

Also, as http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/oras-uu-teambuilding-compendium-updated-post-stage-4.3532022/ makes very clear, Hoopa is
553.png
pursuit
553.png
bait
553.png
553.png
553.png
. Make sure you have a partner who can take on dark types.
671MS.png
Florges,
547.png
Whimsicott, Scarf
620.png
Mienshao and
392.png
Infernape make especially good choices with their speed or bulk.

[[pretty pictures]]
EDIT: You don't see much of Hoopa in this match until the end, but had the Fire Blast connected turn 19, and pory2 gone down, Hoopa would have done the same thing.
forgive the mediocre playing, I decided not to do any fancy predicts, especially when I EQed when Mence came out, because I knew I'd be fine regardless.

A little unorthodox as they share a common weakness but trust me, these two work together to break down each other's checks with the right support

Abomasnow @ Abomasite
Ability: Soundproof
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Ice Shard
- Seed Bomb
- Earthquake

SD Abomasnow is a monster if it can get up an attack boost, being able to OHKO a lot of the tier's biggest threats with good coverage and a priority move including Mega Aero and Hydreigon and Mega Beedrill and soooooo much more! Earthquake is vital to catch Fire types on the switch like Entei or Chandelure. Soundproof is also the best ability pre-mega evolution because it becomes immune to sound based moves like bug buzz from Galvantula allowing you to SD for free. I also like to run it bulky as it gives it a chance to live some super effective coverage moves like an aura sphere from a Mega Blastoise if need be. He supports the next mon by hopefully catching Chandelure on a switch and eliminating fighting types with Ice shard after getting bopped by a body slam...

Snorlax @ Chople Berry
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 144 HP / 188 Def / 176 SpD
Careful Nature
- Curse
- Body Slam
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Curse Lax is more of the supporter of the pair, being able to reliably tank the incoming fire attacks without fear of burn and using said fire types as set up fodder. He also puts pressure on fighting types by using body slam on the switch and whittling mons like Mienshao and Heracross and Machamp down...and hopefully catching a para. Chople Berry is used to give him an extra chance against a fighting type if need be. Obvious problems with this pair are Cobalion and Lucario as well as other steel types, but that's where the rest of the team comes in to help. Good team members include Fighting resists like Weezing (fire attacking coverage is helpful to eliminate steels), Fairies like Granbull or Aromatisse, and Salamence as well as a bulky water like Empoleon/Tentacruel to get rid of/pressure Chandelure with water attacks or hazards. At one point these two were the sweepers/win cons on a team I used to peak top 15 so I know how effective they can be together, they might take support but they work effectively to break down each other's checks.

My nomination for this week is Mega Abomasnow and Nidoqueen!

460-mega.gif

Abomasnow @ Abomasite
Ability: Soundproof --> Snow Warning
EVs: 76 Att / 252 SpA / 180 Spe
Mild Nature
- Ice Shard
- Blizzard
- Giga Drain / Seed Bomb
- Earthquake / Focus Blast

031.gif

Nidoqueen @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 180 Hp / 252 Spa / 76 Spe
Modest Nature
- Sludge Wave
- Earth Power
- Ice Beam
- Stealth Rock / Fire Blast / Flamethrower

Due to Abomasnow's typing, it suffers from 7 different type weaknesses. However, Nidoqueen's access to a plethora of different types of moves help cover 6 of these weaknesses (Fire, Flying, Bug, Rock, Steel and Poison) Abomasnow has. Meanwhile, Abomasnow also accounts for some of Nidoqueen's main weaknesses which include Water, Ice and Ground.

Abomasnow's set focuses on being able to damage targets with STAB Blizzards while having physical attacks to deal with the special walls that Nidoqueen does not like. Ice Shard allow Abomasnow to finish off low health targets or to severely damage frail targets who are weak to Ice. Blizzard is Abomasnow's main attacking move as it has a 100% accuracy in the hail, and not many Pokemon would want to switch into a Blizzard that will never miss. Giga Drain is there to give Abomasnow a form of recovery and hits any Water or Ground types that threaten Nidoqueen; while Seed Bomb is a STAB move that is used as a way to chunk the special walls (Blissey, Florges, Vaporeon) that Nidoqueen does not like. Focus Blast takes advantage of the high Special Attack stat to damage low special defense Steel types (Mega Aggron) while Earthquake hits both Fire and Steel types (doesn't do much to most Steel types as they are very physically defensive) that switch in to resist Abomasnow's stab moves. Lastly, the 180 EV investment in Speed allow Abomasnow to outspeed Pokemon such as Swampert and Mega-Ampharos.

Nidoqueen's set focuses on being able to take down or chunk the Pokemon that Abomasnow is weak against. Sludge Wave is Nidoqueen's stab move to damage threats to Abomasnow such as Rotom-H in particular (as it resists Earth Power). Earth Power is Nidoqueen's primary stab move as it is able to damage any Steel, Rock, Poison or Fire types that threaten out Abomasnow since most are able to outspeed it so, Nidoqueen's natural bulk and resistance to these types of moves allow her to take hits from them while being able OHKO most of them afterwards (like Infernape and Chandelure). Ice Beam helps against the Flying types and also threatens out potential Stealth Rock and Defog users (in conjunction with Earth Power) such as Gligar, Empoleon, Cobalion and Crobat. Lastly, Stealth Rocks can be used to whittle down opponents if they choose to switch out a lot, and it puts many Pokemon in range to be taken down by 1-2 Ice Shards from Abomasnow after Hail damage. Flamethrower and Fire Blast could be used if you need a way to take down any Bug types that threaten Abomasnow (Mega-Beedrill, Forretress, Galvantula) and also Bronzong since it resists Earth Power, but it all depends on how risky you are as Fire Blast has a chance to miss. The 76 EV investment to speed allow Nidoqueen to outspeed Pokemon such as neutral Rotom-H, Aggron and Doublade.

Overall, this set doesn't account for any Fighting types (except Infernape) that threaten Abomasnow and also Psychic types that threaten Nidoqueen. This core also lacks Rapid Spin/Defog support as Abomasnow does not like the rocks.

What's up guys, got a cool little core here with Mega Abomasnow and Suicune. It's pretty simple, Abomasnow and Suicune have pretty much perfect defensive synergy, Abomasnow being able to take any Electric- or Grass-Type moves that would hit Suicune and Suicune being able to take any Fire- and Flying-Type moves or Scalds aimed at Abomasnow. Suicune can also act as a phazer or scald repeatedly for burns to help wear down some Pokemon for a Mega Abomasnow late-game sweep, which happens quite often actually, due to the sheer power of Abomasnow after 1 Swords Dance. But yeah, this is a really nice core that fits on a lot of teams :]

So this core basically revolves around Tyrantrum's wallbreaking ability for Aboma to sweep late game. Tyrantrum can wear down Steels with repeated EQs , as for Flying and Fire types that Aboma fears by forcing them out and taking SR damage. Superpower could be used over EQ so you can have have an easier time taking out Shuca steels (Head Smash damage wears down Doublade enough to the point where EQ from Aboma can kill)

Qwilfish @ Black Sludge
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Impish Nature
- Spikes
- Waterfall
- Taunt
- Thunder Wave

Qwilfish is such an amazing partner for Abomasnow. First of all, they have very good type synergy: they share no weakness, and Qwilfish can check the fighting, fire, steel, poison, and strong physical attacks in general that Abomasnow cannot take, thanks to its good typing, bulk and broken ability. Abomasnow is not really meant to switch into special attacks that Qwilfish fear, but it can somewhat help in critical situations by switching into (not too powerful) ground, electric and grass attacks.

But why would someone use Qwilfish over Tentacruel which have an overall better bulk and a stronger scald ? Well, Qwilfish has many options over Tentacruel that makes it a valuable partner for Aboma. Spikes is very good when playing Aboma: the core forces many switches, which also give many opportunities to set up SD or set Spikes. Spikes also deal good damage to common Aboma switch-ins that take little damage from SR, such as Doublade, Mega-Aggron, Cobalion... to the point when Aboma can just finish them with a +2 EQ. Thunder wave is also very useful, as Abomasnow is horribly slow, and has to use everything it can to outspeed and K.O. its opponent.

This core, while effective, is not self-sufficient, it needs some support to work well. Entry hazard control is very important, as both these guys have no way of recovery and Aboma is weak to SR. A cleric which can take strong special attacks and pass Wishes is very needed: Blissey and Florges are the best for this role.

Note that I use Seed Bomb over Wood Hammer on Abomasnow, as the recoil can be problematic in many situations.
