How often should we declare a UPOW winner?

  • Every week! (higher odds of winning, but potentially less exciting winners)

  • Every other week! (High quality replays every post, but lower odds of winning)

Alright! Great first cycle, folks, love the amount of participation!

Given the number of submissions and the two-week period of this cycle, we're announcing a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place that will all go in the hall of fame and obtain tour tokens! Feel free to redeem those with a room staff member anytime.

This battle is simple and quick, but densely packed with such odds that we can't even really calculate them. Not only does the luck result in an immediate loss from two self-KO moves, the opponent's Metronome even picked perhaps the most insulting move to use in return as well. There's no way this doesn't take the cake.

We did the math on this one: in a consecutive span of turns with no break, missing six focus blasts and then getting fully paralyzed twice results in a ~0.0045% chance of occurring! That's astoundingly unlucky, right there.

While there are some other submissions with lower odds than this, we take context into account, not just pure math. Watching Dire Claw put three consecutive Pokemon to sleep in a row made both of our jaws drop! For the sheer impact alone, this one takes our bronze.

I don't know about everyone else but freeze feels like the unluckiest of status conditions to catch off a secondary effect so having it happen three times in quick succession was incredibly tilting. I basically had to play the game 4 v 6 plus some. I was able to unthaw the Arcanine with Flare Blitz but getting frozen forced me to lose a turn switching as it was choice-locked.

Potentially the unluckiest part of this battle was actually missing a Ruination on turn 2 that would have prevented two of the freezes from even happening in the first place.

Turn 1 vs Shell smash blastoise, tried to set up to counter, works, until it landed 5/5 hydro pumps and the 5th critted me, then next turn yes my mon would die anyway to ice beam but another crit, finally blastoise is gone, and comes qdance venomoth who lands a sleep powder, then eventually I kicked it out.. Into swords dance scale shot haxorus, I was scrambling and then comes turn 29 when my ____ did one of the most disasterclass of all time, 11 play roughs used, 0 crits, 5 misses, ending my suffering
Edit: my opp's 4th and final revealed mon in the game is calm mind strength sap driftblim.. Absolutely cinematic matchup and even better luck on my first randbats game after like 2 months

Gen 9 Randoms, missed some attacks/damage RNG that absolutely would've turned the tides of the game.

Turn 6: Swords Dance-Earthquake into Empoleon, no OHKO, Empoleon left at 1%.
Turn 23: Missed Leech Seed on Roaring Moon, cost me a stall turn.
Turn 33: Missed a Play Rough on a 6% Rotom-Mow, only other moves in my randbats Granbull's arsenal was Earthquake, Roar, and Thunderwave. Rotom-Mow was last mon, and has levitate. Play Rough cost me the game and I lose.

Starting on turn 3 I get sludge bomb poisoned first try, he then swaps to ninetails to burn me first try, then swaps to leafeon just to crit me.

Turn 27 I tera kyogre to ensure i tank the leaf blade just to get crit and lose my kyogre. To respond I send out ampharos to focus blast as he teras dark only for him to dodge it.

To top it off the final turn ends with me missing my tail slap.

This battle was over before it even started when our unfortunate winner missed a wopping five gunk shots in a row, which had a mere 0,032% chance of happening! This let his opponent set up three layers of spikes that would haunt him for the rest of the game.. As a cherry on top, the match ended with a lost speed tie coin flip. I'm sure I'd need to take a break after a game like that.

To make things a little clearer for everyone, every winner of UPOW is entitled to one tour token, an intangible 'voucher' which will let you choose the next tour in the Random Battles room on Pokemon Showdown. Keeping track of and using these tokens is your responsibility, so if you win don't forget to claim your prize over on Showdown!
