Primeape @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- U-turn
- Stone Edge
- Gunk Shot

This has to be the first mon that comes to mind when I think of a check to Pyroar. Knowing that Pyroar is using Specs here allows ScarfApe to come in as a revenge killer and wipe it out with 1 Close Combat.

252 Atk Primeape Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Pyroar: 440-522 (140.5 - 166.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Hitmonchan @ Assault Vest
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 208 HP / 252 Atk / 48 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Ice Punch
- Rapid Spin

Hitmonchan is probably one of the best Pyroar checks in PU. With Assault Vest and Special Defense investment, Hitmonchan always stomachs a hit from Pyroar's moves and easily OHKOs it with Drain Punch while recovering most of the damage done. It also outprioritizes Pyroar with Mach Punch always 2HKOing it after Stealth Rocks.

Regirock @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 56 Def / 200 SpD
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Toxic

Regirock serves as a counter to Pyroar, utilizing it’s great bulk and typing to easily absorb any STAB move and take HP Grass well enough. It can threaten a potential OHKO in return with Stone Edge or an easy 2HKO with Earthquake, and can set stealth rocks on a switch.

Lampent @ Eviolite
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpD / 8 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Flamethrower

RestTalk Lampent
Lampent functions as a counter to all Pyroar sets without Dark Pulse, which is a poor coverage option anyways and isn’t run. It packs immunities/resistances to both of Pyroar’s STABs and resists HP Grass. While Taunt Pyroar does prevent Lampent from setting up, Lampent can still outdamage Pyroar comfortably.

Flash Fire is an option to screw Pyroar over even more, but it’s not needed, and Flame Body is overall better suited for other threats.

0 SpA Lampent Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Pyroar: 65-77 (20.7 - 24.6%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

252 SpA Pyroar Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Lampent: 52-62 (16 - 19.1%) -- possible 6HKO

252 SpA Choice Specs Pyroar Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Lampent: 78-92 (24 - 28.3%) -- 96% chance to 4HKO

Type: Null @ Eviolite
Ability: Battle Armor
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Return
- Swords Dance
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Nominating Type:Null as a Counter. If its Specs then you take Fire Blasts pretty well and can Rest off the damage/fish for misses. If its Taunt then its not doing enough with Fire Blasts to force you to Rest immediately, so you can kill it with Frustrations. Scarf does 0.

252 SpA Choice Specs Pyroar Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Type: Null: 118-141 (29.9 - 35.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Pyroar Inferno Overdrive (185 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Type: Null: 133-157 (33.7 - 39.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

0 Atk Type: Null Return vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Pyroar: 136-162 (43.4 - 51.7%) -- 9% chance to 2HKO

willpower (Kabutops) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Liquidation
- Stone Edge
- Superpower
- Rapid Spin

solid offensive check to pyroar, since you resist both of its stab types, outspeed it, and easily ohko it with 3 of the 4 moves. also, unrelated, but choice scarf kabutops is lowkey decent af. it gives you an automatically solid matchup v rain, fast removal, decent speed tier while still being rather powerful. use it!!!!

Lanturn @ Assault Vest
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 SpA / 72 SpD / 184 Spe
Modest Nature
- Scald / Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Grass]

AV lanturn gets 3hko by Hyper Voice and HP Grass and takes nothing from Fire Blast. Scald is a guaranteed OHKO after rocks and Hydro Pump always OHKOs. Definitely a solid Counter

EDIT: It's not a counter mb.

Carbink @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Rock Slide
- Toxic
- Rest / Protect

Definitely a surefire counter, obviously eating up Pyroar's STABs with ease and even taking miniscule damage from a Choice Specs HP Grass. Unlike most Pokemon on Stall, it doesn't fold to Taunt Pyroar either, threatening it with a Rock Slide.

On a sidenote, this week really made me appreciate how difficult Pyroar is to counter, lol. In the teambuilding stage it's usually easy for me to slap on a Regirock and be done with it, but when this project forces me to expand my view I realized that surefire switch-ins are quite limited; Clefairy hates Taunt; Eelektross and Lanturn are chipped way too easily; others like Throh, Cradily, Carbink, and Type: Null aren't super easy to fit onto teams and, in the case of the latter two, don't eat Pyroar's attacks as well as I'd think.

Checks:

HydraOfLight1255's Primeape

ArtistSmeargle1991's Hitmonchan

allstarapology's Choice Scarf Kabutops

Toy Time King's Lanturn

Jmash324's Regirock

Mango Smoothie's Type: Null

Darkinium's Carbink

Vote for 2 checks, 2 counters, by Friday!

Lanturn @ Leftovers
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 40 HP / 220 Def / 248 SpD
Calm Nature
- Volt Switch
- Scald
- Toxic
- Heal Bell

one of the best available counters to swanna. you take essentially zero from anything it does to you, ohko with volt switch, and have toxic to play around it roosting on your volt switch.

Eelektross @ Assault Vest
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
- Volt Switch
- Giga Drain
- Flamethrower
- Knock Off

Scald only 4HKOs with Rocks, and Volt Switch OHKOs easily, making Eel a hard check/Counter.

And if hypothetically Swanna used Roost to force Eel to switch itself out with Volt Switch, it still kills

252 SpA Swanna Scald vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Eelektross: 81-96 (21.6 - 25.6%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock

252+ SpA Eelektross Volt Switch vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Swanna: 628-744 (215.8 - 255.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Eelektross Volt Switch vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Roosting Swanna: 314-372 (107.9 - 127.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
