Tournament UWL III - Commencement Thread

Thanks for my managers Raph369 Perry and Thor drafting me. I am a 0-3 upl player and I haven't played a personal tour before. I couldn't believe it when I got picked. Probably because i played uwc before and did well?I tried my best in this tour and ended up in 3-1, got my first custom avatar. It's very satisfying to me.
There is many old friends MMII RichardMillePlain Eledyr Aberforth emoxu9 and new friends Milkshook Crossia in skymin which made me really happy in this tour. Especially thanks to MMII and Raph369 which helps me a lot in teambuilding and test. But it costed me two weeks to figure out who Raph369 was:psycry:.
We won this tour with a 7-0 undefeat score. All teammate did a great job, thank you all

Finally Champions!!!

Thank you very much to Thor Perry Raph369 for trusting me and being excellent managers.

Ty my teammates, I got excited when I saw the draft because I saw that there were too many goats together, it was really nice to watch them play, tysm.

Thanks also to el poeta Crossia Yelou it was great to share with you and get to know you, I hope to be your partner in future tournaments

Again thanks to Thor , for always trusting me and giving me opportunities, encouraging me when I was going badly and congratulating me when I played well, perhaps in large part I owe it to you to continue playing ubers and I am very happy that we got the Avy. Also thanks to Perry , it's the third time you're my manager and you're always there to give me teams, help and advice, I appreciate it a lot.

See you at UPL!

PD: If Thor doesn't react with "Love" I'll be officially retired.

This was not a meme, it was a spoiler.

Hello, It’s my time to express some words. I really appreciate all the time we spent in this tournament. I wanna thank especially my co-managers Perry and Raph369 for the excellent job around the teamtour. We made a plan for this auction that ended up shaking some things up, but we made it work until we got a good environment with a competitive team.

I wanna make individual shoutouts, so let's start:

ox04: It's really pleasant to watch someone come back in good shape into these teamtours. Some people might have doubts about how you build your teams and how viable they could be, but you're one of the most dedicated builders in this tier. I really appreciate your hard work. This is my second time teaming with you, and I'm still surprised every time you come up with something new and make it work. Keep going—you're doing well.

RichardMillePlain: To be honest, you were our first surprise of this tour. We planned according to the expectation that you would be super expensive, yet we got you for a very reasonable price. Your support and vibes were very valuable for this team. You played very clean games and were ready to play whatever we needed. This was my first time teaming with you, and I agree—you’re one of the best players nowadays.

Skyiew: The Brazilian Superstar. You were one of our main options, as usual, for SV. You're so dedicated to testing/building teams and helping your teammates that only looking at your wins on the sheet wouldn't show how great of a teammate and player you are. I like players like you who are tryhards. I expect you to keep getting good results.

Hats: Part of Raph's SV core. I didn’t know you until Raph suggested you for our SV core. If you have Raph's trust to be a starter, I figured you were a very good but underrated player, and I guessed right. I heard you didn’t have a good UWC, but you really showed a better record this time with many top moments. I hope to see you around in future tours.

emoxu9: Another surprise for us. We didn’t expect you to be so cheap, and look at what a great season you had—a 100% MVP season, totally deserved from day one. You were one of our most dedicated players, and it really paid off. This was my first time teaming with you, but I can see you’re a great player and person. I know you will get that x-0 season—even if you didn’t get it this time, it was an outstanding performance.

Hrishioo7: Holy gang. This was your first teamtour iirc, and you were one of our priorities. You did perfectly in a gen that Perry and I have struggled with in the past. That’s very impressive, especially considering how creative you were in SS. I hope you had fun in your first teamtour, and I also wanna thank you because you made me enjoy watching SS.

Aberforth: I’m glad to have you on our team, as you’re one of the best Ubers players in both SS and SV. You had some IRL issues that affected your performance, but you were still available for us every week, and I think that’s very valuable. Thanks for giving it your all, even when you weren’t in the best condition to play.

PurpleGatorade: A very good player who also wasn’t in his best condition to play this tournament but still showed up for us and played great games. I’ve known you since UPL, and I know you’re more than capable of having a better record—and you will. Keep going, dude. SM feels very good to watch when you’re playing it.

Melle2402: Another run for us as teammates, but this time we won. You're one of my oldest friends in this game—we’ve known each other since the PO days. A real legend from those ORAS times, and you got a really important win in the finals. Congrats on this well-deserved teamtour win, and also congrats on your family, dude.

susciety: I always wanted to team with you. I thought you were a really good player, and now I’ve confirmed it. Great showings in BW, even if you had some weird moments in your games. You were solid overall in BW, and I think this was your first time playing it in teamtours, so I hope it was a good experience. Even though we don’t share the same vision for BW, you still got great wins. Congrats!

Milkshook: I didn’t know about you before, but I’m sure I won’t forget you—and you won’t be under the radar anymore. You were really active and a true tryhard DPP player. I didn’t even have to check your channel since you were handling everything already, and I’m glad we had you. Hope to see you around!

rookierobbie: The Food Channel manager, a huge medium-rare steak fan, and one of the players I enjoyed watching the most this tour. You won against very strong opponents in this tier. I was convinced by your team picks, so I didn’t have to worry—you had everything covered. I hope to team with you again in the future.

MMII: The ADV guru. I don’t think there’s a single person who tryhards harder than you in this tier. You prepare a lot of great ideas and execute them perfectly. It’s great to finally win a teamtour with you—you truly deserve this trophy. We knew from the beginning that if we drafted you, you could carry both slots with your insane prep. Thank you so much!

gostop: Pairing someone as active as MMII in this tier was a great move, and it showed really good results. You played very clean games throughout the tour, and despite the language barrier, you were one of our most active players. MMII and you made a really strong combo. I hope to see you around in future teamtours.

vani: You’re a strong player overall in GSC, and this tour wasn't the exception. You played very well, but luck wasn’t on your side in some games. The results don’t fully reflect how consistent you were. I hope to team with you again, and hopefully next time, luck will be on your side.

coco: Just like Vani, you had a lot of great performances in this tour, but luck wasn’t in your favor. I hope you give the tier another chance in the future because I’m pretty sure you’ll have a solid record next time. Congrats on this win—you didn’t get the best in-game outcomes, but at least you got the teamtour victory, which is even better.

Eledyr: Our second time teaming since our first UPL as Drizzlers, and yeah, it’s good to get a win this time. You started really strong, and I’m glad we had you as part of our RBY core. You’re a very motivated and solid player. Some moments in the tier didn’t allow you to show everything you had, but we broke the undefeated curse from your RBYPL team, so congrats hahaha.

AM: You probably didn’t get the RBY season you expected, but you contributed to the team in many other ways, so it’s alright. You were one of the main reasons for our ORAS success, so I’m more than happy that you were with us and tryharded in both gens. You really deserve this win—congrats.

Trade: I wanted to team with you again for a while now. I remember when I debuted in BW here—you kicked my ass several times in tests and helped me have a great season in the first UWTT. Now, we win this winter teamtour together, so it feels great to share this with you. You’re such a creative player and a solid pilot, so I was confident having you in this slot.

64 Squares: Probably our most controversial pick during planning. I was worried about you not giving enough attention to this tour, but you made it very clear that you were ready to play any tier we needed you for. You also had a better presence in team chat than I remembered from the past. I’m glad we share this trophy, especially since we were teammates in the first UWTT and made it to the finals back then. Now, we got the job done. Congrats, bro. It’s clear that you might not be as motivated as before, but you love winning more than anyone (dude takes two minutes to pick a lead on turn 1, lmao), so it’s always safe to watch you play.

Zcarlett: Another part of our ADV core and also our SV player slayer. Very good chat presence and a huge help in our victory. I didn’t know too much about you before this tour, but you definitely deserve to be around in future tours. I know you’ll be a solid player in either SV or ADV.

Cam: This was my first time teaming with you, and I gotta say—you were a great addition to our team. A very active player who never let our general chat die, always ready with an otter for the chat, and prepared for everything we needed. Congrats on this win—you were really important.

A Welcome Guest: We didn’t talk much, but you got a nice win in ADV, and I know you’re a good person. I hope to see you around more—congrats on the win.

Mysterious M: My bro, we’ve known each other since the PO days, just like Melle. We’ve been teammates in a lot of teamtours, but this is the first time we win something together, so it’s special to me. You weren’t too motivated this time, but you were always ready if needed, and I really appreciate that. Thanks, Misterioso M.

SiTuM abriel you guys didn't talk too much but good luck in future tours and gratz on the avy.

Perry: My co-pilot. We've been teammates since you drafted me in UPL for Drizzlers. I really disliked that at the time because you were the ONLY team I didn’t like at all. But as time passed, I ended up managing Drizzlers alongside you, and now we’re managing this tour and winning it all. We finally made it to this moment. You're the best manager ever, and we have understood each other very well since my first season as part of the Drizzlers gang. Now, let’s go for your second UPL trophy.

Raph369: Perry trusted you with our SV core plans, and you didn’t disappoint in your first season ever as a manager. You did a great job getting a lot of under-the-radar players (holy gang) and making our lives easier by testing and helping our SV core. Even if you say you didn’t have to do much, I’m sure everyone was glad to be part of this team because of your presence. Very well-deserved win as both a player and manager.

GeniusFromHoenn: You’re probably still busy with some exams, but you helped us a lot at the beginning of the tour and in draft plans as a fourth manager. I hope you see this when you come back and feel as happy as we are for the win.

@helpers: Great job, everyone! You were part of our success in this tour. It was really great to have you all around, helping in the tiers where we needed it.

Blim: Come back for UPL, please!

And that's everything, was a pleasure to be your manager in this teamtour, have fun fellas, we're the champions!

WE FUCKING WON LOOOL I still can't believe it, but at the same time, deep down I always knew we had it in the bag... like come on, our team was just spectacular and we had just the best team environment for a tournament I have managed. I have a lot of people to thank, but above all, I have to thank Thor and Raph369, my friends, who did way more than I did and are mostly responsible for this win. Thank you, I really do like you two.

I am not very good with words, but I just want to reiterate how proud I am of everyone who played for us, and how thankful I am for everyone who joined us to help. The biggest thing I'm looking when planning my draft is "how much will I enjoy being at my teamchat?", and really, I could not have asked for a better team - you guys are all GOATs and I expect to see you all in the summer with UPL.

We flew big, everyone. Thank you!

Idk if there’s ever going to be a recap /set dump thread for this (I assume no by this point) so I’m just gonna ramble here, instead.

Overall, I very much enjoyed this tournament. It probably helped that I was on a strong team that won, though. I do think that even beyond that fact, having double slots and a giant army is really cool. Again, perry/thor/raph did well in draft but it was nice to see so much activity in every gen. It didn’t really matter the skill levels, as long as the players were active then they’d have a cool dynamic with their generation partner that you rarely get to see in UPL. The team’s being so large also meant that it was more frequent that you’d get a bit of cross gen support from the folks that know multiple formats. AM sticks out to me as the biggest example of this. His rby score wasn’t what he wanted but he was still frequently working with eledyr and stunner for rby prep but especially carried the oras prep in a way that doesn’t get reflected on the sheet.

The other big benefit to giant teams is that individual games don’t matter as much towards the final result. A robbed win or awful mu doesn’t have as big as an impact and the likelyhood of an « unfair » week is reduced in general due the expanded sample size. Having a weaker slot isn’t as much as a handicap as it is in UPL since you can have more strong slots to compensate and still have a decent hax margin.

The downsides to the tournament for me, were the repeat weeks. It seemed like a reasonable idea on paper but, in practice, the two best teams are basically known by week 3 already. The only room for doubt was a potential gambits comeback but that was squashed by the end of week 4. Doing single weeks does make the team tournament unusually short but I think that’s better than dragging it out with fluff weeks. (smogon tournaments drag out too long to begin with)

The logistics of sign ups aside, four teams is too few for a team tournament. Looking at UPL, there’s p much always a clear best and a clear worst. That means there’s only really a contest between 2nd and 3rd until the finals week. The increased week stability kinda functions as a double-edged sword here, too.

I’m not sure yet what I think of draft relative to UPL. Like I mentioned before, individually weaker slots are not as impactful due to the greater teamsize. Double slots also makes it easier to draft a « weaker » player since they get to have a « stronger » player supporting them in the second slot. Two « mid » players can also work well eachother a deliver a solid W:L for the gen overall. These reasons make me feel like there’s more leeway to succeed in draft and less emphasis single star players to carry the team. On the other hand, if the managers fuck up and don’t invest as they should into the gens than they get punished double. A ship of 30+ players sinks hard af on a flubbed draft and that’s a lot of players to be letting down. This puts a lot of weight on the managers shoulders and the lack of overall teams means it’s pretty important for the tournament experience itself. The nature of draft also usually means that the players an underpowered team fails to pick up will instead go to supercharging an overpowered team.

Overall, I would like to see this format come back next year. It was an unique and enjoyable experience for me. However, changes will likely need to be made to make it a better experience for all the players in the tournament. I think single weeks is a given but I’d also hope we could try and push the signs up some and try 6 teams. This would probs require us to cut the bo3 slots so that there’s more talent for the dedicated old gen pools. There’s already enough reward for drafting multigen talent baked into the format itself as is.

We might also need to downsize the sv slots down to 4 as well. This would break the current gen to old gen ratio that works in UPL but it’d at least give more room to stick the multi gen players into the old gens instead of current gen. Even with all these changes, there might probably still be issues with drafting some of the drier old gens as well as just the overall lack of ubers players to feed 120 starter slots.

Ultimately, I understand thar the decision and details will be determined next year when the time comes. I wanted to throw out a bit of feedback, regardless, since I really did enjoy this tournament and feel like we are pretty close to something that doesn’t need to be tossed out for another new thing every year.

Thanks to my managers, teammates, and tournament hosts for a wonderful time!
