Vaporeon greatly benefits from recent metagame shifts, with its best counter, Toxicroak, rising to RU, giving it more room to flourish. As a result of Toxicroak leaving, Scald has become much more spammable, with the move's few drawbacks and Vaporeon's high Special Attack making it even more reliable. Scald is capable of dealing good damage to checks like Rotom, as well as frail Grass-types such as Whimsicott and Sceptile, which don't appreciate being burned or taking chip damage. Vaporeon's pure Water typing, fantastic bulk, and access to the combination of Wish + Protect allows it to check NU's most prominent threats, namely Incineroar, Slowbro, and Diancie. Additionally, its immense bulk helps it check other common Pokemon like Passimian, Sneasel, and non-Electrium Z Klinklang. Toxic puts foes like Slowbro, Decidueye, and Guzzlord on a timer, which is complemented by Wish + Protect, whereas Heal Bell further cements Vaporeon's defensive capabilities by healing status ailments that could otherwise cripple it.
