I've had this debate with my brother's girl before, who is a strict vegetarian. If your a vegetarian due to animal cruelty, isn't that a bit none sensical? Just because plants are unable to communicate does not mean that they suffer when thet're farmed and cooked. How is boiling a carrot any less cruel then boiling a lobster? But on a more serious note, in order for us to survive we have to eat other living things, whether they be plant or animal.
While I don't agree with vegans -I'm about as far from one in terms of eating habits as you can get (and yes, I acknowledge I will die in my 40s from something heart related)- and do believe that something has to be done about the quality of life for these animals. The problem is that animal raising has become less about farming and more about big business. It's not how the animal is raised, but how many are produced. Farm animals today are treated like goods more then animals. They are born, raised, and slaughtered in ways that are most efficient for the company, with no regards for the creatures well-being.
And with cruelty aside, this big-business aproach to farming impacts as on a health level as well. Did you know that cows are beefed up with steroids and groth hormones?
