Venusaur’s poisonous vines block your way in ZU! Venusaur has recently risen as a defensive staple in ZU thanks to its excellent typing and solid bulk. It comfortably walls physical attackers such as Grass-types like Thwackey and Trevenant and Fighting-types like Poliwrath and Passimian. While its special bulk isn’t outstanding, Venusaur can still check Jolteon, Rotom-Mow, Lanturn, Arboliva, and Clawitzer. Thanks to its durability driven by Synthesis and Leech Seed, Venusaur is also a premier Knock Off user in the metagame, reliably removing items from many Pokémon it switches into including Sneasel-Hisui, Weezing, and Magneton. While Giga Drain is the preferred for reliable recovery, Leech Seed is useful against Pokémon such as Sneasel-Hisui, Weezing, and Muk. However, it struggles against Mesprit, Fire-types like Charizard and Oricorio-base, and Ice-types such as Abomasnow, Beartic, Glastrier, and Sneasel even though none of them can comfortably switch in an incoming Sludge Bomb or Knock Off. Partners like Sableye, Spiritomb, and Orthworm, which can switch into Mesprit and Ice-types and threaten them back, team up excellently with Venusaur. Regirock, Whiscash, and Lanturn also synergize well, handling both Charizard and Oricorio-base and, in the case of the first two, setting hazards to support the team. Because Venusaur relies on Leftovers, it is vulnerable to hazards, making hazard removers like Hitmontop, Sandslash, and Cryogonal valuable teammates.
