VGC Team - Heavy Metal

Hello all, my first time posting around here. ^_^

Would appreciate some advice on a team I'm creating for the VGCs this year - I entered last year and got up pretty high, but I'm trying to put more strategy in this year's team. (My last was a mix of physical and special sweepers, and that can only get you so far. Did pretty well though for a team with no support or anything like that though.)

Anyway - onto the still being created team. Thanks all for taking a look by the way. =D I'm still undecided about much of this team... Not too good with picking the perfect held item yet. I haven't trained them all yet either, so I can't practice battle with anyone at the moment. ^^;

Metagross

Metagross.gif

  • Ability: Clear Body
  • Hold Item: Life Orb (?)
  • EV Spread: 252 Attack, 122 Def., 136 Spec. Def., 2 Unused
  • Nature: Adamant or Careful (Depending on the IVs.)
  • Attacks : Explosion, Meteor Mash, Zen Headbutt, Toxic or Protect
  • Strategy : Open with Metagross (And protecting partner/Mismagius) and explode. Simple. In case of Ghost type or suspected Protecting enemies, use attacks other than Explosion until chance opens.
  • Objective: Wipe out opponents first two Pokemon to allow for main strategy to start.
Mismagius

Mismagius.png
  • Ability: Levitate
  • Hold Item: Spell Tag
  • EV Spread: 252 Speed, 128 Spec. Att., 128 Def.
  • Nature: Timid
  • Attacks: Perish Song, Ominous Wind, Icy Wind/Psychic, Thunder Wave
  • Strategy: Goes in with Metagross, uses Ominous Wind to clean up if any enemies are left behind. (Hence the Spell Tag increasing bonus of Ghost-Type moves up 30%.) Then, next turn, use Perish Song on opponent's final two Pokemon, which cannot escape the move unless countered by Soundproof, Protect, etc. Finally, stall 3 turns and keep my team alive.
  • Objective: Namesake of the team, uses Perish Song on two opponents which cannot escape.
Typhlosion

Typhlosion.png
  • Ability: Blaze
  • Hold Item: Choice Specs/Scarf or Charcoal (Hard time deciding..)
  • EV Spread: 252 Spec. Att., 252 Speed
  • Nature: Timid or Modest (Depends on Item.)
  • Attacks: Eruption, Protect, Flamethrower, Focus Blast/Extrasensory
  • Strategy: Effectively goes in and uses Eruption trying to severly injure enemy if Explosion plan is horribly screwed. Just a sweeper in backup cases.
  • Objective: I just really like Typhlosion. I used one last year with Eruption in the VGC's, and it won most, if not all my battles. Eruption is insanely powerful. Its goal: Kill as much as it can before it faints.
Exploud

Exploud.gif

  • Ablility: Soundproof
  • Hold Item: (I can't decide. Help? >_<;)
  • EV Spread: 128 Def, 128 Spec. Def, 128 Attack, 124 Hp. 2 Unused.
  • Nature: Adamant or Brave
  • Attacks: Earthquake, Avalanche, Protect, Secret Power/Endure
  • Strategy: Use when Mismagius is using Perish Song. Will not be affected by the song, therefore gaining a chance to keep it alive when the other Pokemon are fainting thanks to the song. (After all, if a match is ended due to Perish Song, the person who used the move loses...) Since it is slow, bulk up its small defenses and use Avalanche since it will probably be hit before it attacks. Use Earthquake with Mismagius since it Levitates. Use Endure and Protect to guarantee survival.
  • Objective: I'm never used an Exploud before, or trained one. It intrests me due to its ability, and I think the Protect/Endure combo could be useful. Not very strong, but it might work. Fits with the 'Song' theme too.

------------------------------------------

As for the final two members of my team, I'm still deciding them.

I'm either going to use walls to stall, or maybe a sweeper.

I'm thinking of possibly: Skarmory, Blissey, Mewtwo (Best sweeper ever.), Lugia (Best wall ever.), Lapras? (It can use Perish Song too. Fights Dragons.), or another like that.. I'm really in a bind.

The types of teams I think mine might be countered by are:
Trick Room teams that survive Explosion.
  • I may be able to counter a Pokemon like Bronzong by teaching my Mismagius Heat Wave. Ghosts can be taken down by Ominous Wind, but if a Trick Room team gets its move up, I maybe should place some slow Pokemon on my team.. (Another point for Exploud.)
Other Pokemon with Soundproof.
  • The only other Pokemon with Soundproof are Electrode and Mr.Mime. I don't think they'll be a big threat but.. you never know.

I can't really think of any other gigantic counters right now, but if you notice a major flaw or something, please tell me. I'm really afraid of Trick Room teams. That's what I lost to last year... Bad plan having an entire team speedy except for a lone Swampert. (Although my Swampert did save me from losing against Trick Room twice. XD)

But yeah, please take a look and thank you all for the help. ^_^

ill start out with my opinion of your strategy as a whole. First off you rely on explosion too much to take out the first two, everyone knows explosion is going to be on about every team and i can almost garuntee they will all have protect or a ghost switch in the deal with it. And just as a little note on your leads, Giratina walks all over them. Cant be hit by explosion and can easily take out mismagius. Also (as im sure you already know) you can only have 4 out at a time, so instead of Lugia being one of your backups he should definately be in your actual team, not specifically Lugai but any 2 ubers for that matter.

@metagross- definately protect over toxic, VGC is too fast paced for toxic to work effectively. Replace Zen for hammer arm so you can hit dialga eally hard, and plus alooooott of stuff resists zen headbut. I might be able to see life orb on metagross.

@mismagius- I really do like the perish song idea, but i dont think you can take out the opponents first two guys while keeping mismagius alive long enough to perish song. Move someone else to the lead that can get the kills in then you can send mismagius in afterwards to get the parish song off. Spell tag, dont like so much, you can definately utilize a different item for alot better results. OK moveset, Twave over psychic if anything.

@typhlosion- Scarf is really good, especially with eruption. but then that brings to mind the questions of will he kill the other two or what happens if their last two guys resist fire. I mean, its a good concept but just be careful. I could see a groudon being a good partner. If you do end up going with a scarf, no need for protect. at all.

@exploud- if you run endure give it a salac berry or something. Try hyper voice, if i remember right it hits both opposing enemies (plus it gets STAB from him) and run him as a mixed sweeper of some sort.

overall you kinda do need to remake team to fit in some ubers. just a rough guess of a team..

Metagross, Lugia, Mismagius, Groudon.

have one protect while mismagius uses parish song then stall to death (lugia is good at that) and that way you dont have to use exploud souly for soundproof.

I like the idea of a perish song team with exploud (honestly because I had one planned recently but nixed it for the team i have now). There are a few flaws you need to look at. First what if someone protects the explosion. Second what if someone protects the perish song. Third, and this goes with what Parallel said, you cant wall very well. These problems are easily fixable with the pokemon you have now if you dont want to change your team.

@ Mismageous- Teach Mismageous impression, protect, ominous wind, and perish song. Start battle with impression eliminating any use of protect. Then go on to the explosion plan after that.

@ Metagross- protect first turn then use explosion

@ Exploud- too many attack moves. If you get your perish song out then you don't have to worry about killing them. To survive give him protect, endure, rest (hold a lum berry), and earthquake (in case of taunt). This sould ensure you stay alive for a couple of turns.

@ Typhlosion- first i wouldn't give him a choice item just so you have the ability to use different attack. Typhlosion would only really be needed as backup in case perish song fails or in case exploud and mismagous die fast. The moves that he has are fine I would give him extrasensory because focus blast has less accuracy and you cant afford to miss if things come down to needing typhlosion as back up.

The biggest thing you have to worry about is someone with a trick room team. You could give mismageous trick room instead of ominous wind but then you have to worry about someone starting with a ghost lead. Its up to you to which is the lesser of two evils, in my opinion i would rather face a trick room team if you are going for perish song and walling them since protect has priority. You dont have to follow any of this, its just my advice. good luck =D

Alright. Thanks for the quick responses guys!

I guess you're reight about Explosion being common. I only saw it once last year, so I didn't really think of it being a common strategy. ^^;

I was considering Hammer Arm for Metagross at one point, so thanks for the suggestion. I'll definitely replace Toxic with Protect too.
Hm.. Yeah. Maybe I'll switch out a different partner for Metagross. I don't want to rely on Explosion too heavily, I remember the first battle I was in last year had an Exploding Azelf and I was able to withstand it pretty well.

Scarfed Typhlosion + Groudon would be a really cool combo. Thatcould seriously do some damage.

The reason I didn't immediately add ubers is because I personally think they shouldn't be allowed in the tournament. I liked it last year when they were banned. XD; I will definitely make Lugia a main member of my team though. Sort of a pride thing for me I guess... Shouldn't get in the way of strategy though.

In response to my Typhlosion use, he's one of my favorite Pokemon and I just enjoy using him, I know he's not the best Eruption user, but I love using him. Like a good luck charm I guess.

Hm.. I'll go look up some more movesets and edit my post when I figure out some more 'final' strategies..

(Quoting due to the fact that I didn't notice this post when I posted... ^^;)

The Imprison tactic on Mismagius sound really awesome! That could work really well. =D Thanks!

Yeah, I tend to avoid Choice items, I always fear that I'm going to be faced with an enemy I could kill with another move in the set but then can't kill because I'm locked into the one move. Especially with Eruption, which is based on HP.
The Exploud strategy sounds really good too, I may or may not keep him, but yeah. I have a bad tendency to try and attack rather than stall... even if the strategy is stall. ^^:

I think I will try and face a Trick Room team, if only because of the fact that if I do place Lugia in there, he'll be alright, I'll just have to balance the Speeds of my Pokemon.

Is this a VGC 2009 team? Remember, this year you are permitted two uber Pokemon in your team, so it is advisable to try work one of them into your team.

If you are able to obtain a legitimate one from Gen III, I would recommend Mewtwo with Self Destruct as a Lead, Hasty natured and holding Life Orb, if you intend to explode straight off. A Metagross immediately signals explode, especially with a Mismagius as a partner. Mewtwo offers more versatility, it can taunt other Pokemon trying to taunt Mismagius, and use powerful special attacks.

Replace exploud with anything. Its NU for a reason. Both Electrode and Mr Mime outclass it, and I recommend using a second uber over a soundproof Pokemon, because they are more likely to be able to stall out perish song. Remember, Exploud has to last 3 turns Lugia and Giritina are your two best defensive options.

Ha, seems very like the only doubles team I have; Mismagius with Protect/Imprison/Perish Song/Shadow Ball, Lickilicky with Explosion (because he's cool!), Gengar with Explosion and attacking moves as back up, then a Soundproof Mr. Mime with Teeter Dance and T Wave for stalling. I find that most of the Pokémon are too frail, Dark Void Smeargle destroys it, and basically anything with decent attack and speed can destroy the strategy... Especially when the opponent will have ubers.

And several people seem to be forgetting that Perish Song hits through Protect...

And several people seem to be forgetting that Perish Song hits through Protect...

I thought it did! I couldn't remember if that was truly the case or not. I was looking it up the other night and I remember looking for Exploud because of it...

Dark Void Smeragle sounds frightening. o_o; I hate that move with a passion.

@Alexa888
- No this is a basic team plan for this year, like I said in an earlier post, I don't want to rely too much on ubers to win for me. Its a pride thing. I am probably going to use Lugia though. (Because Lugia + Typhlosion = Nostalgia for me. Ah... Silver.)

I still don't really know which I'm direction I'm going in with this, I still would like to keep the Perish Song strategy though. I've never personally seen it used before, and I know if it was used against me, I probably would be scrambling a bit to defeat the strategy.

But then again, its usefulness all depends on the types of people I battle. Last year I faced a couple people who got in, no EV training/strategy, and beat them. Year before that I faced people who didn't have strategy but EV trained, and I lost.

Heck, last year I lent a couple random Pokemon I EV trained to a friend of mine so he could participate and he managed to win two rounds! XD;
(I think they were Flygon, Ninetales, Togekiss, and something else.. They didn't really have any sort of keen tactic in their sets though.) I was stunned.

I think there's always a luck factor with teams in tournaments like this, so we can't always assume that a team will be definitely going against someone who's able to use a counter or strategy perfectly to counter your team. Although, I do expect to see uber spamming in this tournament. I have beaten OU teams with UU teams over PBR before though. I dunno. ^^;
