Alomomola @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 232 HP / 252 Def / 24 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Knock Off
- Wish
- Protect

Physically defensive alomomola can take all feraligatr attacks without been 2HKO even at +2. Has regenerator to come healthy on gatr almost everytime. With knock off gets rid of the life orb, can burn it with scald and after that stall it with wish protect. You may have to be a little lucky with the burn but since you will have from 2-3 opportunities at the begining of the 1V1 fight you will be able to do it nearly always. Once Feraligatr is burn and has lost the LO it only has 5.9%chance to 2HKO alomomola at +6.

252 Atk Life Orb Feraligatr Superpower vs. 232 HP / 252+ Def Alomomola: 122-144 (23 - 27.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

Intimidate
Spikes

Qwilfish is a good check against Feraligtyr for several reasons. First of all, Intimidate allows Qwilfish to negate a dragon dance boost (assuming Qwilfish is switching in on the same turn Gatyr dragon dances, Qwilfish is able to get in safely). Next, Qwilfish's typing gives it a resistance to Gatyr's STAB, as well as two of its other coverage moves, Superpower and Ice Punch. It's other coverage move, Crunch, only has a minuscule chance to 3HKO at neutral.
In return, Qwilfish can proceed to paralyze Gatyr and set up spikes. Qwilfish also has Pain Split to recover from the damage taken. An alternative choice would be to try to fish for the burn from scald, but it is much more risky.
The reason I think Qwilfish is a hard check rather than a counter is because Qwilfish can do little damage outside of burn. When taking on Gatyr, it's job is usually to paralyze the foe and switch out on something that can take out Gatyr. If Feraligtyr lacks Crunch, however, Qwilfish can efficiently deal with Gatyr with Scald's burn.

Defensive Calcs:

252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Qwilfish: 110-130 (32.9 - 38.9%) -- 11.3% chance to 3HKO after Black Sludge recovery

252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Qwilfish: 82-97 (24.5 - 29%) -- possible 5HKO after Black Sludge recovery

Qwilfish isn't viable in OU.
...I looked at the thread and it didn't have Poliwrath in there .-.
Well, time to prove Qwilfish is viable on Showdown.

Key words: 95% of the time. Poliwrath isn't bottom-of-the-barrel although it kinda sucks, it is actually a great counter to Pokemon such as Feraligatr, choice locked Keldeo (stops it from spamming scald), Bisharp, and Mega Gyarados. As a spikes setter, Qwilfish is outclassed by Ferrothorn, Chesnaught, and Skarmory, and and as a physical wall, it's outclassed by Ferrothorn, Skarmory, Lando-T, etc.

Aragorn the King honestly this has been bugging me for a while.

Someone tried doing Poliwrath a while back for something, and when someone said it wasn't viable, I tagged AM, who I know had used the set, and he said to stick to the mons on the ranking list.
Someone did Mantine after that, and when someone tried to bring up that it wasn't viable (or at least it wasn't listed), they were shot down by a badged user.
Now we have someone who did do Poliwrath without objection, and when someone else did something that's not listed, they were shot down.

I understand that Mantine has been on the list before and that some good players have had success with Poliwrath (neither of which can be said about Qwilfish), but for anyone else who hasn't seen this argument it comes off as a double standard. If nothing else, can we establish a clear line on what's OK to write up and what's not? Right now the line seems blurry and only people who actively read the Viability posts or actively watch high level matches would even know why Mantine and Poliwrath are usable.

I agree: the rule is definitely really blurry right now. The reason why I wasn't worried at all about this at first is that entries of lower-ranked Pokemon rarely if ever make it to the archive, so they're really just for fun. When I select Pokemon for the archive, I'm looking at overall effectiveness and overall viability, so that in and of itself puts a check on Pokemon not considered that great. Personally, I'm not annoyed when I see a Pokemon nominated that's unlisted on the viability thread, as long as it both has something unique about it and aptly counters or checks the victim of the week. However, it obviously clutters the thread if people are constantly nominating useless Pokemon. Additionally, telling others that their entries aren't suitable for the thread further clutters the thread.

Basically, if it's something like Mantine or Poliwrath, I'll let it be, but certainly don't count on it making into the archive, and if it's something like Pachirisu or Bellossom, I'll delete it and tell the writer why the Pokemon in question isn't worth using. I realize this maintains a level of subjectivity, but I'd rather keep it this way. Essentially, nominate something that viably checks or counters the victim of the week, and if there's an issue, I'll deal with it.

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 152 HP / 252 SpA / 104 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Draco Meteor
- Fire Blast
- Roost

Mega Altaria can come in on all moves that Feraligatr has bar Ice Punch, which is the exception, and why it's only a soft check. Otherwise, Mega Altaria can Roost as it switches or to test the waters, or 2HKO 'Gatr. This spread is tailored to outspeed Adamant Tyranitar, the extra bulk allowing for MAltaria to avoid a 2HKO from a +1 Waterfall, although this chance will drop if rocks are up.

What MAltaria can do:

252+ SpA Pixilate Mega Altaria Hyper Voice vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Feraligatr: 217-256 (69.7 - 82.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Mega Altaria Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Feraligatr: 241-285 (77.4 - 91.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

What a Non-Ice Punch 'Gatr can do:
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Waterfall vs. 152 HP / 0 Def Mega Altaria: 131-155 (39.8 - 47.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 152 HP / 0 Def Mega Altaria: 87-103 (26.4 - 31.3%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Feraligatr Superpower vs. 152 HP / 0 Def Mega Altaria: 101-120 (30.6 - 36.4%) -- 55.9% chance to 3HKO

What an Ice Punch 'Gatr can do and that's why you should tread lightly:
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Ice Punch vs. 152 HP / 0 Def Mega Altaria: 330-390 (100.3 - 118.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Toxic

Because of its nice physical bulk, resistance to SR, reliable recovery and Unaware, Quagsire can switch in on Feraligatr many times and will always win 1 vs 1 against Feraligatr by negating its boost(s), taking hits, recovering off the damagevia Recover and cripple with a Scald Burn or Toxic.
252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 96-114 (24.3 - 28.9%) -- 2.6% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 103-121 (26.1 - 30.7%) -- 61% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Life Orb Feraligatr Superpower vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 117-139 (29.6 - 35.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 153-181 (38.8 - 45.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Quagsire Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Feraligatr: 35-42 (11.2 - 13.5%) -- possible 7HKO after Stealth Rock (use it for the burn rate, not for the actual damage lol)

0 Atk Quagsire Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Feraligatr: 94-112 (30.2 - 36%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock (useful after Feraligatr has been Burned/Toxic'd, but will not be used often)
When facing Quagsire (and Unaware Clefable), Feraligatr's Atk and Speed don't drop since Unaware negates both stat boosts and drops. In the end, it doesn't even matter. It doesn't change the fact that Feraligatr can't 2HKO Quagsire in any (common) situation.

Fun fact: Feraligatr's Sheer Force somewhat helps Quagsire in the way that the secondary effect (flinch, freeze and Def drop) of Feraligatr's moves won't ever happen and so, Quagsire (as every other mon, especially bulkier and/or slower ones) won't ever need to deal with these nasty secondary effects.

Tangrowth @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Sleep Powder
- Knock Off / Infestation
- Leech Seed

It's a good counter. It has many things to do, and the only thing you might fear is.... +1 Ice Punch after the switch-in.
So just to say, all the calcs are useless (wfall, crunch and superpower do all below 25%), the matter are the ice punches:

def:
252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 148-177 (36.6 - 43.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recover
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 221-263 (54.7 - 65%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

and off:
0 SpA Tangrowth Leaf Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 356-420 (114.4 - 135%) -- guaranteed OHKO

You counter it because:
2 ice punches will never kill after rocks and leftovers;
+1 ice punch will never kill if you switch into DD;
You always kill
Since the average damage of +0icepunch is 34,2, factoring the leftovers, regenerator most of the times is plenty to recover the damage, if fera decides to switch out like a hit and run.

And tangrowth proves to be useful with Knock Off / Infestation, either removing items or trapping physical attackers and decimating their life with leech seed

EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

Mega Slowbro is a cool Counter to Feraligatr since although Feraligatr can carry the super effective Sheer Force boosted Crunch, it doesn't do that much to Mega Slowbro that it has to worry.

Mega Slowbro basically comes in on any attack or boosting move and then starts boosting with Iron Defense and recovering with Slack Off. This way, Mega Slowbro can turn Feraligatr into a setup bait, since it can freely Calm Mind up without fearing a crit. You don't even have to worry about Defense drops since Sheer Force ignores this for you.

If you've finished setting up (+6) then you can start killing everything with Scald. (Your opponent shouldn't stay in though.)

The second best HA starter is here to hard check one of its brethren (Gatr is obvs the best), Serperior can come in on any of Gatr's moves except for Dragon Dance and proceed to easily OHKO Gatr Back with a nice n' powerful leafstorm. If serp comes in on a DD, it will lose guaranteed if the Gatr has ice punch, and can die to a +1 superpower after rocks as well. But for the most part, Serp comes in on 3/4 of Gatr's moves and will win nearly every time, making it a pretty sturdy check.

Calcs
252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Serperior: 99-117 (34 - 40.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Serperior: 133-157 (45.7 - 53.9%) -- 46.9% chance to 2HKO
Comes in easily on crunch or waterfall

Can stomach an ice punch most of the time, has a big chance of dying after rocks however :(
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Ice Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Serperior: 374-442 (128.5 - 151.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Feraligatr Superpower vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Serperior: 229-270 (78.6 - 92.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (37.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock)
If Gatr has no Ice Punch, you can win guaranteed if rocks aren't down with superpower, but it usually loses if it comes in on a DD
252 SpA Life Orb Serperior Leaf Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 447-530 (143.7 - 170.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
OHKO's back guaranteed, and gets a nice +2 boost in the process.

If Feraligatr hasn't boosted, Skarmory can come in on any of its attack and cripple it with Toxic (if it doesn't come in on Waterfall) or Whirlwind it away. Roost allows Skarmory to keep itself healthy while Counter can hit Feraligatr hard if it attacks. Cofagrigus' niche in OU is to screw up physical attackers and sweepers with the annoying combination of Mummy + Haze + Will-o-Wisp (and being a cool TR sweeper, but I'll focus on the defensive set) and its great physical bulk. It can come in on almost any of Feraligatr's moves, fearing only Crunch variants (but then, Feraligatr will still be badly crippled), before proceeding to burn it, cancelling its boosts and KOing Feraligatr by wearing it down via burn, LO recoil (Feraligatr will lose Sheer Force after its first damaging move), a Pain Split somewhere to stay somewhat healthy and maybe one or two Shadow Balls.

0 SpA Cofagrigus Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Feraligatr: 96-114 (30.8 - 36.6%) -- 61.4% chance to 3HKO (with burn damage and LO recoil which roughly takes 22% of Feraligatr's HP every turn, it become a guaranteed 2HKO)
Cofagrigus will have to be wary of secondary effects from Feraligatr's moves due to the loss of Sheer Force via Mummy. The coffin mon doesn't like to flinch and even less so to have its Def dropped.

Jernmax if it's ok with you, I'll write your nomination for Keldeo.

Keldeo as a shaky Check

Keldeo @ Choice Specs
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Secret Sword
- Scald
- Icy Wind

Specs Keldeo is kind of a tricky Feraligatr check: if it comes on a Superpower, Keldeo outspeeds and OHKOes Feraligatr with Secret Sword. If it comes on any other damaging move, it 2HKOes Feraligatr and avoids being 2HKOed in return (only if Feraligatr doesn't also have Superpower). If it switches in on a DD, Feraligatr 2HKOes after SR. Therefore, it's imperative that Keldeo switches in on anything but DD to effectively check Superpower-less Feraligatr and on Superpower only to check Superpower variants.
252 Atk Life Orb Feraligatr Superpower vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Keldeo: 161-190 (49.8 - 58.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Secret Sword vs. -1 0 HP / 0 Def Feraligatr: 312-367 (100.3 - 118%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Ice Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Keldeo: 65-77 (20.1 - 23.8%) -- 0.1% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock

252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Keldeo: 69-82 (21.3 - 25.3%) -- 40.1% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock

It really doesnt matter what set you run, Keldeo isnt 2HKOed by any of Weavile's moves outside of Aerial Ace (lol) and OHKOs with Secret Sword.

252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Icicle Crash vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Keldeo: 94-109 (29.1 - 33.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Low Kick (60 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Keldeo: 88-104 (27.2 - 32.1%) -- 98.2% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Mega Slowbro as a hard check
slowbro-mega.gif

Pink Blob 2.0 (Slowbro) @ Slowbroite
Ability: Oblivious / Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Rest / Slack Off
- Psyshock / Sleep Talk
- Scald

Mega Slowbro is basically a check to every physical attacker. With an insane defensive stat and an item that can't be removed makes Mega Slowbro a decent switch in to Weavile. Scald is a guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock or a round of Life Orb damage, while the only attack Weavile can do back is Knock Off, which has a slight change to 3HKO. Not to mention, if Scald Burns on the first try, Mega Slowbro can just Slack Off until Weavile dies of Life Orb recoil and Burn damage.

252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Knock Off vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Slowbro: 125-148 (31.7 - 37.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Ice Shard vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Slowbro: 19-23 (4.8 - 5.8%) -- possibly the worst move ever

252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Slowbro: 35-43 (8.8 - 10.9%) -- possible 9HKO after Stealth Rock

252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Low Kick (100 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Slowbro: 31-38 (7.8 - 9.6%) -- possibly the worst move ever
4 SpA Mega Slowbro Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Weavile: 124-147 (44.1 - 52.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Mega Scizor
Counter

Scizor @ Scizorite
Ability: Light Metal
EVs: 248 HP / 84 Atk / 176 SpD
Impish Nature
- Swords Dance
- Roost
- Bullet Punch
- Knock Off

Mega Scizor is a great counter to Weavile, taking little damage from Knock Off and Low Kick, while resisting both Icicle Crash and Ice Shard. Scizor can also OHKO back with Bullet Punch, after one round of Life Orb Recoil. Scizor also has Roost to heal it, and can use Weavile as set up fodder for Swords Dance.

84 Atk Technician Mega Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Weavile: 276-326 (98.2 - 116%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Icicle Crash vs. 248 HP / 0+ Def Mega Scizor: 58-69 (16.9 - 20.1%) -- possible 5HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Knock Off vs. 248 HP / 0+ Def Mega Scizor: 90-107 (26.2 - 31.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Low Kick (100 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0+ Def Mega Scizor: 92-109 (26.8 - 31.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 Atk Life Orb Weavile Ice Shard vs. 248 HP / 0+ Def Mega Scizor: 27-32 (7.8 - 9.3%) -- possibly the worst move ever
