Klefki: Check

Klefki_XY.gif

Klefki @ Leftovers
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Spikes
- Thunder Wave
- Magnet Rise
- Play Rough

Klefki can safely switch in to altaria's return at +1 as it resists its pixillate returns and it is not a 2HKO. It can also switch in to an EQ at +1 but it is not recommended as it is a 2HKO and klefki would take a huge amount of damage.

Here are some scenarios:
  • If altaria running EQ, Klefki can use its prankster magnet rise on the predicted EQ to be immune to it. It can then cripple altaria by paralyzing it and then proceed to set up spikes for its teammates.
  • If altaria is running substitute, klefki can just break its sub with play rough and then paralyze it and set up spikes.
  • If altaria is running heal bell, Klefki can just potentially stall it out of heal bells by thunder waving it as heal bell has lesser PP than thunder wave.
Overall, klefki is a decent answer to altaria although it can 2HKO klefki at +2 but most of the time klefki will win 1v1 against altaria as it is most likely going to either paralyze it, get some damage on it, or set up at least 1 layer of spikes to support its team.

Calcs:
+1 0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Klefki: 125-147 (39.4 - 46.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 0 Atk Mega Altaria Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Klefki: 250-296 (78.8 - 93.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Klefki: 166-196 (52.3 - 61.8%) -- 98.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Klefki Play Rough vs. 248 HP / 136+ Def Mega Altaria: 120-144 (33.9 - 40.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Counter
Scizor@Leftovers
EV's: 248 HP/252 Attack/8 Def
Trait: Technician
Adamant Nature
-Swords Dance
-Bullet Punch
-Knock Off
-Roost

Scizor has an amazing match up against physical attacking DDD M-Altaria. Scizor can switch in on any move and proceed to set up an SD and have a chance to OHKO it 50% of the time, and guaranteed after rocks. The best case scenario for M-Altaria is.....to switch out honestly but if it had to pick a move, I guess DD would be the way to go.

0 Atk Mega Altaria Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Scizor: 78-92 (22.7 - 26.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock
+1 0 Atk Mega Altaria Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Scizor: 116-137 (33.8 - 39.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
+2 0 Atk Mega Altaria Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Scizor: 154-182 (44.8 - 53%) -- 85.9% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
Meanwhile, this is only after Scizor has switched in and gone for an SD AND lived a +2 Bullet Punch:

+2 252+ Atk Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 248 HP / 136+ Def Mega Altaria: 320-378 (90.6 - 107%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO

So the most damage M-Altaria can hope to do is 53% and as an added bonus, unlike Mega Scizor who also does work against Mega Altaria, Scizor does not take up a mega slot!

Scolipede - hard check

545.png

Scolipede @ Life Orb
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 16 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def / 236 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Megahorn
- Earthquake
- Poison Jab
- Protect/ Sword Dance/rock slide

Scolipede is a check imo because he can't come in multiple times but he always wins the 1vs1.
Scolipede can come in every mega altaria's moves and he outspeed altaria even after one dd.
Megahorn is a very powerful STAB move that is capable of hitting a lot of the OU metagame hard. Earthquake gets good neutral coverage alongside Megahorn that hits Heatran and Excadrill for super effective damage. Poison Jab is another STAB move that hits Clefable and other Fairy-types harder than any of Scolipede's other moves
An Adamant nature is chosen because Scolipede gains Speed from Speed Boost anyway, and a Jolly nature does not allow Scolipede to outspeed anything notable; the drop in power is noticeable as well. 236 Speed EVs allow Scolipede to outspeed max Speed Kyurem-B before a boost, and the Attack EVs are to maximize Scolipede's power

252+ Atk Life Orb Scolipede Poison Jab vs. 248 HP / 136+ Def Mega Altaria: 234-276 (66.2 - 78.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Mega Altaria Earthquake vs. 16 HP / 4 Def Scolipede: 86-102 (32.4 - 38.4%) -- 97.9% chance to 3HKO
0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 16 HP / 4 Def Scolipede: 85-101 (32 - 38.1%) -- 96.1% chance to 3HKO
+1 0 Atk Mega Altaria Earthquake vs. 16 HP / 4 Def Scolipede: 129-152 (48.6 - 57.3%) -- 94.1% chance to 2HKO

Jirachi @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Iron Head
- U-turn
- Ice Punch / Fire Punch
- Healing Wish

Scarf Jirachi doesn't care about anything Mega Altaria does (except Earthquake) and 2HKO it with STAB Iron Head. U-Turn is used to gather momentum while Ice Punch is used so that you can hit Landorus-T and other Dragon-types that are 4x weak to Ice. However, Fire Punch is an acceptable alternative to hit Scizor and Ferrothorn. Healing Wish is used in the last slot to provide support for the team.

Calculations:

0 Atk Mega Altaria Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jirachi: 158-186 (46.3 - 54.5%) -- 96.9% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
0 Atk Pixilate Mega Altaria Return vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jirachi: 78-92 (22.8 - 26.9%) -- 98.9% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock

The little bit of HP investment lets it avoid the OHKO from +1 Altaria, but it will die after LO recoil, but it can easily be avoided by running Lum or Blackglasses

+6 0 Atk Pixilate Altaria Return vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Unaware Quagsire: 124-147 (31.4 - 37.3%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Due to unaware M-Altaria can boost up all the way to +6 and still be walled by quag.
Also for reference:
252+ Atk Pixilate Altaria Return vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Unaware Quagsire: 169-201 (42.8 - 51%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
you still sort of wall adamant 252.

Also you can even wall special sets w/o heavy investment:
252 SpA Pixilate Altaria Hyper Voice vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Quagsire: 180-213 (45.6 - 54%) -- 3.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Heal bell only has 8 pp so toxic wins eventually.
Sub/roost sets are annoying and turn into a pp stall, but
0 Atk Quagsire Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 136 Def Altaria: 90-106 (25.4 - 30%)
EQ always breaks subs of this variant so predict the roost and then toxic.

Quag doesn't use up a mega slot, lets you beat other setup sweepers with ease that unaware clefable can't, and just plain is awesome

Week 39:
Thanks for the Altaria checks and counters! Also, congrats to ZANBAKUResh for making it into the hall of fame!

One more thing. I've noticed that there are some Pokemon in the archive whose sets have not changed, but their counters/checks have. For example, Mega Altaria is definitely among the top three checks/counters for both Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y, and yet for obvious reasons is not in the archive. For situations like this, I'm going you guys to recommend you to PM me, in order to avoid clutter here, any ORAS revisions to the archive you'd like to see. After the week is over I'll state whatever changes I made. Don't worry, any entries removed from the archive in favor of superior ones will still count towards a user's standing in the Hall of Fame.

This week we'll do Mega Houndoom

Azumarill can comfortably take any attack from Mega Houndoom and still beat it. Even if the switches in on WoW, it can still deal enough damage to win. The worst case scenario is switching in on the Wisp, then either taking three Fire Blasts or two +2 Fire Blasts. Burned Azumarill 2HKOs with Waterfall, and +2 Fire Blast has no chance to 2HKO after burn damage (potential 2HKO with burn + hazards), at which point Houndoom will be KOed. Azu beats it outright everytime. Rocks and spikes don't impact the matchup either, as Azu isn't worn down enough.

Even with the amazing design, Mega Latios barely borders on usable. The extra bulk is handy in many situations, but if aiming for extra bulk, Mega Latias is the way to go. Not being as weak to Knock Off doesn't help its case, as most Knock Off users, such as Bisharp and Weavile, are able to 1vs1 Mega Latios without resorting to clicking Knock Off. Even then, Knock Off still puts a massive dent in it, if not OHKOing it anyways. The only niche Mega Latios has on a team is hitting slightly harder than Mega Latias. This does come into play, such as 2HKOing Azumarill at neutral, OHKOing Hippowdon with Surf at +1, OHKOing Tornadus-T at +1 with Psyshock, and 2HKOing Chansey at +1, none of which Mega Latias can do. Calm Mind certainly has a surprise factor, but even with the better defenses, for the majority of the time, you're better off using Mega Latias or regular Latios.

- Hidden Power [Fire]

Since you are running hp fire you won't speed tie base 110s, so gave enough speed to outspeed base 108s. If not running hp fire run max speed. Rest goes into SPA and atk.
Have duel stab and coverage.

216 SpA Mega Houndoom Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Diancie: 85-101 (27.9 - 33.2%)
4 Atk Diancie Diamond Storm vs. 40 HP / 4 Def Mega Houndoom: 356-420 (118.2 - 139.5%)

Mega Diancie is one of offensive's best switch ins to Mega Houndoom. It resists both stabs and can reflect wisp and taunts. Also an added bonus is your bulk is higher pre mega. Only a check tho because no reliable recovery and you lose almost a third of your health each time you switch in also you are outsped, so it can only switch in a couple times a battle.

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 Attac / 252 Speed / 4 Sp Def
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Return
- Heal Bell
- Roost

Mega Altaria with its Defensive Dragon Dance set allows it to use Mega Doom as set up fodder with the combination of Heal Bell and Roost allowing it to absorb a burn, boost, and heal only to take it out after a bit. While this could be dangerous as Doom could be boosting alongside you, it would take a bit before it can get some real pressure on you.

+2 252 SpA Mega Houndoom Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Altaria: 182-214 (62.5 - 73.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

This can be seen as problematic yes, but Altaria, even while burned, is able to get a guaranteed 3hko on Doom while burned, and is able to secure a 2hko on doom after single dance. Now you may ask why its the offensive Alt set and ot the DDD one used like the last victim? Well its mainly due to the fact that you are unable to secure signifigant damage on the Doom while burned as an impish return is only 3hko and after one dance, doom will still outspeed you.

Overall its more of a blanket check as there are cases Altaria is able to lose (Switching in as normal alt as he boosts, they burn next turn, and fire blast) so that's why I have it labeled as a check and not counter here (even while it carries Heal Bell).

Tyranitar @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Pursuit

I'm classifying Choice Scarf Tyranitar as a counter. It is able to switch in on both of it's STAB moves, while also setting up sand to boost it's special defense. A choice scarf enables it to outspeed Mega Houndoom, allowing it to revenge kill it with Stone Edge (as long as it hits lol). Even if Houndoom is running Will-O-Wisp, it doesn't matter since Tyranitar still 2HKOs with Stone Edge.

Here are some scenarios (they're all quite simple)
  • Tyranitar switches in on Dark Pulse, outspeeds, and OHKOs with Stone Edge
  • Tyranitar switches in on Fire Blast, outspeeds, and OHKOs with Stone Edge
  • Tyranitar switches in on Nasty Plot, outspeeds and OHKOs with Stone Edge
  • Tyranitar switches in on Taunt, outspeeds and OHKOs with Stone Edge
  • Tyranitar switches in on Will-O-Wisp, 2HKOs with Stone Edge
Time for calcs:
252 SpA Mega Houndoom Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 63-75 (18.4 - 21.9%) -- possible 5HKO
252 SpA Mega Houndoom Dark Pulse vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 46-54 (13.4 - 15.8%) -- possible 7HKO
252 Atk Tyranitar Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Houndoom: 244-288 (83.8 - 98.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after sandstorm damage (Earthquake lets you OHKO after some prior damage, and is also more reliable than Stone Edge, but if Houndoom has taken no prior damage, you can't OHKO)
252 Atk Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Houndoom: 366-432 (125.7 - 148.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk burned Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Houndoom: 183-216 (62.8 - 74.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after sandstorm damage

Due to its natural special bulk, Heatran is able to check Mega Houndoom effectively. Heatran can come in on any one of Mega Doom's moves, whether it be the offensive moves, such as Fire Blast, which is absorbed due to Flash Fire, or Dark Pulse, which does ~40%. Even if the Houndoom predicts a switch and sets up a Nasty Plot, Heatran can outspeed it the next turn and 2HKO it with Earth Power, while being able to survive a +2 Dark Pulse.

Defensive Calc:

I'm not sure which spread is more common on Conkeldurr, considering the calc lists the SpDef-invested set and not the HP one. I prefer mixed bulk from HP investment. Anyways, Conkeldurr is a decent switch-in and excellent revenge killer to Mega Houndoom. At full, it can switch into any of Houndoom's moves allowing Conkeldurr to threaten a KO with Drain Punch. Mach Punch does decent damage and almost OHKOs if Guts is activated.

Reserving Mega Gyarados

Name : Gyarados
Status: Check

Gyarados @ Gyaradosite
Ability: Intimidate
EV: 252 Atk / 8 SpD / 248 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Crunch
- Substitute / Taunt

If Mega Houndoom lacks Will-O-Wisp, Mega Gyarados can come in freely and OHKO it with Waterfall or if you predict a switch, set up a Dragon Dance or Substitute. Crunch is a secondary STAB move for Mega Gyarados and can be used to bypass Slowbro, Celebi and the Lati@s. Substitute is used to block status and provide safety against revenge killers (and Scald burns!) while Taunt allows you to shit on Stall teams. 248 Spe and Jolly nature allows you to outspeed Timid Mega Sceptile and Jolly Mega Beedrill after a Dragon Dance while the rest is used for bulk.

Calculations:
252 Atk Mold Breaker Mega Gyarados Waterfall vs. 40 HP / 0 Def Mega Houndoom: 326-386 (108.3 - 128.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
216 SpA Mega Houndoom Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 8 SpD Mega Gyarados: 73-87 (22 - 26.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock
