Week 97: DD Dragonite
dragonite.gif

Dragonite @ Lum Berry
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Outrage
- Extreme Speed
- Earthquake / Fire Punch

036.gif

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast
- Moonlight
- Heal Bell / Thunder Wave

Unaware Clefable's kinda a hard check / counter to almost every set-up sweeper out there since it ignores stab boosts, especially the likes of Dragonite. Without Iron Tail, Dragonite has absolutely no way of doing much harm to Clefable, as its strongest attack, Outrage, doesn't affect it and its second strongest move, Earthquake, only does upwards of 30%. From there, Clefable can freely set up Calm Minds against it and possibly sweep the opposing team. Clefable doesn't do too much damage through Multiscale though.
252+ Atk Dragonite Extreme Speed vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 86-102 (21.8 - 25.9%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Dragonite Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 107-127 (27.2 - 32.3%) -- 61.3% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

COUNTER: DEFENSIVE TOGEKISS

468.gif

Togekiss @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
- Roost
- Air Slash
- Defog/Thunder Wave/Heal Bell
- Nasty Plot/Aura Sphere/Flamethrower (or Fire Blast)

Sporting quite respectable 85/95/115 bulk, and a solid defensive typing (immunity to Ground and Dragon is quite good) with good coverage, Defensive Togekiss is a great option to counter all Dragonite sets as well as most Garchomp sets as well (as long as they don't carry Poison Jab or Stone Edge). Being weak to Stealth Rocks isn't fun, especially since this set works decently as a Defogger, and also because you can't repeatedly switch in while rocks are up to counter the things you usually counter.

Still, this set has a lot of options depending on what your teams needs (Stallbreaker=use Nasty Plot, Cleric=use Heal Bell, beat Bisharp/Tyranitar on the switch in=use Aura Sphere, beat Ferrothorn and Scizor [latter on switch in]=use Flamethrower or Fire Blast), and it's bulky enough to get the job done. Note that since Dragonite is carrying a Lum Berry, you'll need to Thunder Wave it twice to get your Serene Grace hax going. This means Dragonite can often set up to +2 on you, which should be accounted for in calcs, at least to some degree.

Calcs below.

Defensive:
+2 252+ Atk Dragonite Fire Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Togekiss: 137-162 (36.6 - 43.3%) -- 98.9% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Dragonite Extreme Speed vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Togekiss: 146-172 (39 - 45.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 252+ Atk Dragonite Fire Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Togekiss: 103-122 (27.5 - 32.6%) -- 72.4% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252+ Atk Dragonite Extreme Speed vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Togekiss: 110-130 (29.4 - 34.7%) -- 100% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Dragonite Fire Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Togekiss: 69-82 (18.4 - 21.9%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Dragonite Extreme Speed vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Togekiss: 73-87 (19.5 - 23.2%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery

Offensive:
0 SpA Togekiss Air Slash vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Multiscale Dragonite: 47-56 (14.5 - 17.3%) -- possible 6HKO
0 SpA Togekiss Air Slash vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dragonite: 94-112 (29.1 - 34.6%) -- 8.7% chance to 3HKO

As you can see, even at +2, Dragonite does below 50%, meaning that you can Roost out Extreme Speed if needed, and can wait till parahax kick in. Once Multiscale is broken, you 4HKO Dragonite cleanly.

If Dragonite is unboosted and tries to exploit the fact that you're switching in to check it a lot by spamming Fire Punch or Extremespeed and then switching out to a counter, note that you don't take much damage at all (sub 25%) and can still beat Dragonite 1v1 later on. In addition, Dragonite probably doesn't want to DD up on you even with a Lum Berry, as you still win almost all scenarios (barring hax) and losing the Lum Berry is bad if your opponent wants to try and sweep later on at all.

Kyurem-Black @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Teravolt
EVs: 252 Atk / 32 SpA / 224 Spe
Naive Nature
- Ice Beam
- Outrage
- Fusion Bolt
- Dragon Claw

With choice scarf, Kyurem-b out speeds +1 Dragonite. Teravolt breaks through Multiscale, guaranteeing a KO.

252+ Atk Teravolt Kyurem-B Outrage vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Dragonite: 548-648 (169.6 - 200.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

32 SpA Teravolt Kyurem-B Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dragonite: 468-552 (144.8 - 170.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Teravolt Kyurem-B Dragon Claw vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Dragonite: 366-432 (113.3 - 133.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Kyurem can live anything except Outrage, even at +1.

+1 252+ Atk Dragonite Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Kyurem-B: 183-216 (46.8 - 55.2%) -- 69.5% chance to 2HKO

Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 144 Def / 112 SpD
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Slack Off
- Stone Edge/Whirlwind

Sand Stream breaks Multiscale, of course, while Hippo can come on on even an (+0) Outrage and proceed to Whirlwind it out or smack it with a Stone Edge.

Relevant calcs:
252+ Atk Dragonite Outrage vs. 252 HP / 144+ Def Hippowdon: 154-183 (36.6 - 43.5%)
0 Atk Hippowdon Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Dragonite (Multiscale broken): 166-196 (51.3 - 60.6%)

Quick question: if we have a mon that counters DD Dragonite that's running Fire Punch over EQ but only situationally checks the EQ variant, would it count only as a check (or should we say "counters Fire Punch variants, checks EQ variants)?

2. When giving checks, give Pokemon that can switch in on at least one move; naming revenge killers is too easy.

I believe that would fall under this.

landorus-therian.gif

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers / Rocky Helmet
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 8 SpD / 8 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- U-turn

Role: Soft Counter

Defensive Lando-T can hamper Dragonite's offensive presence with Intimidate, and can do some decent damage with Stone Edge once Multiscale is broken. On that topic, Stealth Rock can force the opponent to play more conservatively with Dragonite, as can Rocky Helmet variants, especially when combined, as Stone Edge will always KO Dragonite after Stealth Rock and Rocky Helmet damage. Be careful of coming in after too many Dragon Dances, though, especially if rocks are up on your side.

-1 252+ Atk Dragonite Outrage vs. 252 HP / 240+ Def Landorus-T: 115-136 (30.1 - 35.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Dragonite Outrage vs. 252 HP / 240+ Def Landorus-T: 172-204 (45 - 53.4%) -- 89.8% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Weavile @ Life Orb / Chilan Berry
Ability: Pressure / Pickpocket
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 29 HP
- Ice Shard
- Icicle Crash
- Knock Off
- Swords Dance

Weavile is able to act as a check to Dragonite through its typing. It is able to take a +1 ESpeed of its healthy and KO through Multiscale with Icicle Crash if its LO, but while LO is usually better Weavile is able to stop it more consistently with Chilan Berry because it is able to take the hit from under 50% (which is practical considering that Weavile won't typically be at full health due to SR (and recoil from its attacks if LO) and KO. This is neat because Drag will always ESpeed if its Multiscale is broken due to Ice Shard always killing without Multiscale when the usual LO Weavile set is used, so taking the hit is a big boon.

Bronzong @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Toxic
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock

bronzong can beat eq variants of dragonite fairly easily but it can be overwhelmed by +2 or more dragonite because of its lack of physical defense investment, but once its in dragonite has a very low chance to 2hko with +1 outrage which means that bronzong can take it on pretty well 1v1.

252+ Atk Dragonite Outrage vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Bronzong: 97-114 (28.6 - 33.7%) -- 97.9% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252+ Atk Dragonite Outrage vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Bronzong: 146-172 (43.1 - 50.8%) -- 3.9% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

4 Atk Bronzong Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 76-90 (23.5 - 27.8%) -- 82.4% chance to 4HKO
4 Atk Bronzong Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Dragonite: 153-180 (47.3 - 55.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

not great odds because its actually a lot less reliable than i thought it was, still a nice check though. it can also run a physically defensive set in order to be a counter but becomes less reliable in beating fairies.

Mamoswine @ Life Orb
Ability: Thick Fat

Mamoswine outspeeds Dragonite and can KO through Multiscale with a Life Orb Icicle Crash. If Dragonite has a Dragon Dance up, Mamoswine can survive a +1 Extreme Speed and still KO back. Even Ice Shard can KO Dragonite if Multiscale is broken.

244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 374-445 (115.7 - 137.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Provided that Dragonite has not set up yet, Conk can OHKO through Multiscale with Ice Punch. Conk can also make a decent partner to DNite, who appreciates its wallbreaking power v Fairies, Scizor and Gyarados.

Lopunny
@ Lopunnite
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- High Jump Kick
- Return
- Fake Out
- Ice Punch

Because Dragonite isn't running Jolly, Mega Lopunny is still faster after +1. After finding the chance to come in unscathed, Mega Lopunny is able to break Dragonite's Multiscale with Fake Out, mega evolving safely in the process if it hasn't already. From there, it's able to cleanly KO back with Ice Punch while stomaching a boosted Extreme Speed (56.8 - 67.1%). This all makes the bunny a unique and solid check to DD Dragonite.

Azumarill @ Choice Band
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 172 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Play Rough
- Waterfall

- Superpower

Azumarill can stomach any attack Dragonite can throw at it, with +1 Earthquake only 2HKOing. Play Rough hits incredibly hard and actually has a chance to OHKO through Multiscale, so of course Azumarill can beat it with any prior damage.

+1 252+ Atk Dragonite Earthquake vs. 172 HP / 0 Def Azumarill: 221-260 (57.5 - 67.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252+ Atk Dragonite Extreme Speed vs. 172 HP / 0 Def Azumarill: 177-209 (46 - 54.4%) -- 55.9% chance to 2HKO

Tyranitar @ Tyranitarite
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Stone Edge
- Ice Punch / Crunch
- Superpower / Fire Punch

Sand Stream breaks Multiscale, allowing Tyranitar to OHKO Dragonite with Stone Edge or Ice Punch. As an added bonus, Tyranitar will outspeed Dragonite after Mega Evolving, since it isn't using a Jolly Nature.

However, Tyranitar can only switch in on ExtremeSpeed, Fire Punch, or Dragon Dance (at +0), and doesn't get many opportunities to set up.

Offensive:
252 Atk Mega Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Dragonite: 408-480 (126.3 - 148.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Garchomp @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature

Scarf Garchomp is a fairly solid check to Dragonite, outspeeding it at +1 and KOing with Outrage or Dragon Claw after Multiscale is broken. Stealth Rock will be required to KO Dnite with dragon claw, but Outrage can KO when Dnite loses even 1 HP, so Sandstorm or Hail can help here if Dnite hasn't been attacked previously.

252 Atk Garchomp Dragon Claw vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Dragonite: 272-324 (84.2 - 100.3%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

Reserving Air Balloon Physically Defensive Cobalion as a counter

Cobalion
@ Air Balloon
Ability: Justified
EVs : 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Taunt
- Close Combat
- Iron Head
- Volt Switch
This is a weird variation of Cobalion that can take physical attacks really well thank to an amazing 128 Defense. He's immune to EQ with the Air Balloon and take pittance from its other attacks (Fire Punch only 3HKOes without a boost). You will say "Dragonite can just pop the balloon with Extreme Speed!" Yeah but : +1 252+ Atk Dragonite Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Cobalion: 222-262 (57.5 - 67.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
So Physically Defensive Cobalion is a great counter to any physical attacker.

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Toxic / Curse

COUNTER: Quagsire is a mon with incredible bulk that is consistantly able to switch into almost every physically offensive Pokemon with this set. What also makes it particularly good versus the Pokemon in question is its Unaware ability. Quagsire can come in, soak up 1 or 2 Outrages (only do around 48% after lefties, regardless of any boosts) and proceed to burn/poison Dragonite after its Lum Berry is consumed. An additional set that can easily set up on DD Dragonite is Curse Quag, which just widdles Dragonite with Scald and can proceed to tear through the remainder of the opponents team.

Aggron @ Aggronite
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Heavy Slam / Iron Head
- Earthquake
- Avalanche
- Rock Slide / Stealth Rock

Mega Aggron can take either 3 unboosted EQs or 2 +1 EQs and is almost guaranteed to OHKO back with Avalanche, making it a counter. Even if Dragonite decided to DD twice to eat up said Avalanche, it can't OHKO Mega Aggron back. Ice Punch still technically beats Dragonite since all it needs to do is 2HKO it which Ice Punch does, but it doesn't beat it nearly as convincingly. No 100% sure I can call this a counter since it nees to mega to be able to switch in on EQ, and mega evolving necessarily implies taking extra damage beforehand, but eh, let's assume you manage to do that while forcing a switch.

(And yes, Avalanche is generally better than Ice Punch on offensive Mega Aggron, partly because that particular set's job is to sit there, take hits, and hit back harder, partly because it's not outspeeding anything anyway, and partly becuase the damage drop from Ice Punch isn't too noticeable against its specific targets compared to what you gain with a boosted Avalanche. Still somehow a contact move though, so unfortunately, you can't bypass recoil from Garchomp)

252+ Atk Dragonite Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Filter Mega Aggron: 88-105 (25.5 - 30.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock

+2 252+ Atk Dragonite Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Audino: 150-177 (36.5 - 43.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
0 SpA Mega Audino Dazzling Gleam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Multiscale Dragonite: 72-85 (22.2 - 26.3%) -- 11.5% chance to 4HKO
0 SpA Mega Audino Dazzling Gleam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dragonite: 144-170 (44.5 - 52.6%) -- 18.8% chance to 2HKO
+1 0 SpA Mega Audino Dazzling Gleam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dragonite: 216-254 (66.8 - 78.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 0 SpA Mega Audino Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dragonite: 324-384 (100.3 - 118.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Mega Audino is a ridiculously bulky counter to any non iron tail forms of Dragonite, with its absurd bulk enabling it to take 2 +2 Earthquakes from adamant DNite. Fire Punch and extremespeed do absolutely pitiful damage and of course, if already mega evolved, Mega Audino can freely come in on an outrage.

Remarkably, DD Nite is actually set up fodder for Audino, with the ability to freely set up wishes for itself and take hits, Audino can choose to instantly hit back, or begin to freely set up calm minds. This mon's movepool is pretty absurd and half of its moves can be put into the second slot to give you a great matchup versus Dragonite. While your standard CM set is probably your best way to go due to it arguably being its best set, any of the aforementioned slashed alternatives can be used. Encore is quite a neat option, being able to lock Dragonite into Outrage or Dragon Dance, allowing you to take advantage of that freely, while +1 Ice Beam guarantees the KO on Dnite after multiscale is broken as well as giving it options versus bulky grass types in the tier. It can also play as a bulkier Clefable with TWave, a move which can neutralise many switch ins to Audino, while also completely slowing down Dragonite.
